Jack couldn't help but laugh at me. It annoyed me so much how he couldn't take me seriously.
"Dude, what are you trying to do..." he said in between breaths while he laughed "...wake up the whole neighborhood?" he stood up.
I just remembered how late it was..
"Oh shoot!" I said running to my door and looking out to see if there were any signs that my mom was awake.
"Don't worry about your mom. She's sound asleep."
"But you said..."
"Oh I lied, she wouldn't be able to hear you if you went up to her room and screamed your head off...sorry." he said shrugging his shoulders.
"You're an ass." I say with a glare as I slam my door.
He chuckled "As you've told me...several times."
Honestly, it was pretty hard to believe I was having this conversation with him right now. I mean, I was actually starting to get used to him not being there. Now here he was cracking jokes. I made my way to my bed, Jack pulled up a chair in front of me and decided not to sit in the seat of the chair, like a normal person, but to balance himself on top of the chair. I raised an eyebrow.
"Is that safe?" I said, but then feeling like that was a dumb question to ask.
"Psh, yea 100%" he said blowing me off with a smile. He continued to balance with ease.
I sighed and couldn't help but smile.
"So, you were gonna tell me what's going on.."
"Oh that's right. I was going to..until you decided to rage out on me!" He said throwing his arms in the air. I laughed.
"I'm sorry..okay? Now you gotta tell me." I said.
Jack sighed.
"Hmm...where should I start?" He said putting his hand on his chin.
"Like what happened to you? At the lake?" I asked. This was something I've been wanting to know for almost a year. How he felt those last moments of his life.
"Wow...okay. Well..."
As soon as I fell through the ice, I knew I was going to die.
"This is it, I'm going to freeze to death."I thought.
It's weird because you would think that I would try to fight my way to the top of the surface, but no. I knew. The last thing I thought before I closed my eyes was Jane screaming my name.
"Jack? Jack!"
"Wow, I just saved my sister's life..." I thought.
After that, I got really tired. I closed for my eyes and it seemed like a few moments later, the water wasn't freezing, but was warm. I opened my eyes and saw the moon. It was dark outside and the moon was shining brightly. For some reason, this wasn't the same moon that I had known before. This moon was bigger, brighter, and more wise.
I know that doesn't make any sense, but there isn't any other way I can explain it.
Looking at the moon, I suddenly didn't feel tired, or cold, or afraid.
I felt at peace.
Slowly, I felt myself rise out of the water. I felt like I was a whole new person. As I gasped for breath, I looked around me and looked down and saw I was floating in mid air. I laughed out loud. This was something I had only dreamt about. Honestly, I thought I was dreaming.
Anyways, when I was able to finally settle down on the ground, I noticed that my feet weren't freezing. Mind you, I don't wear socks or shoes when I go ice skating.
I looked down on the ground and saw the staff I had used to save Jane's life. I bent down to pick it up and the moment my fingertips touched it, ice began to form on it. I jumped and backed away from it in shock. I then looked up and saw her.
Saying she was beautiful would be an insult. Words couldn't even describe her beauty. She wore an white ball gown with an elevated collar with was filled with feathers and sparkled with diamonds. Her bronze skin glowed as she walked toward me. It seemed like she came straight from a fairy tale. She seemed older, like around 40 , but she could easily pass for younger.
We said no words as we walked towards each other. As we were a few feet in front of each other I noticed her eyes were ice blue. She gave off a warm smile as if she knew more than I did.
"Hello Jack.." she said. I jumped slightly since I was so used to the silence.
For the first time in my life, I was speechless. She rose an eyebrow..
"Jack..." she said in a warning tone.
"Don't be rude. I know you weren't raised as such."
I swallowed the hard lump in my throat. I didn't know why I was so intimidated by her.
I waved.
"Hi?"
She laughed "That's better.."
"Who- who are you?" I asked.
"I'm Mother Nature." she said.
"Wha- what? Mother Nature?" I said confused. "But, that's crazy...no offense...but she's only in fairy tales."
She laughed, which made me a little bit nervous. I now realized that this was pretty odd. How she was dressed, how she came out of thin air, how she knew my name..
"Jack your going to have to throw everything you knew in your past life out the window sweetheart."
"Past life? What do you mean?" I said. Starting to panic I started backing away from her slowly.
"You don't think you survived your little fall did you? Oh speaking of which.." She walked to the hole I fell through, which was between us.
"Don't want anyone else having any accidents do we?" she knelled to the hole and put her hand on the edge. For a few seconds, I thought I was going crazy. But I saw the hole starting to repair itself. Within a few seconds there was no longer a hole. Also I heard the sound of ice frosting throughout the whole pond.
My jaw fell open. I stood in shock as she stood up and walked with grace toward me. When she stood a few feet from me I said.
"Mother Nature?"
She nodded.
"So, are you trying to tell me...I'm dead?"
"Yes Jack, I am. And I'm very sorry.." she said with a genuine tone.
I honestly didn't know how to respond at first. I mean, what if someone told you, you died a few hours ago. I turned my back to her and put my hands on my face.
"So, what does that mean? Where am I? In limbo or something?"
"Oh no, not at all..." Mother Nature said as she walked behind me.
"Your actually one of the spirits of childhood.." she said with sound of pride.
I turn around in confusion and frustration.
"What?! What are you talking about?"
She sighed. I could tell I was giving her a hard time and I felt bad.
"I'm sorry..it's just- this is a lot to take in ya know?" I said.
"Yes, I understand completely Jack. We all went through the same thing."
"We?"
"The other spirits of course. The Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, Father Time...they are all real Jack." She said with honesty in her eyes.
"So, so..." I said trying to wrap my mind around that all the creatures that I believed in as a kid were actually real. I started to pace.
"I know this is hard to take in-"
"What am I?" I said abruptly turning around.
"Excuse me?" she said not comprehending.
"Then who am I? I mean, if your Mother Nature and the Easter Bunny is hopping around somewhere, who am I?"
She smiled. Her teeth were the brightest I had ever seen.
She grabbed my hand and guided me to the end of the pond where there was a wooded area. She walked me over to one of the trees and stopped.
I looked at her in confusion. She simply grabbed my hand and put it on the tree trunk. Frost began to form on the tree.
"Your Jack Frost hun." She said with a smile.
My jaw fell open.
"Wow.." I said backing away and looking at my hands.
"but...why me?" I ask.
"Well, the Man on the Moon makes all of those decisions." she said looking up at the Moon.
"What? It- I mean, he talks to you?" I say looking up. I knew there was something different about the moon that I hadn't noticed before.
"Yes, over time he will find a way to communicate with you. Just be patient. But be warned, he's not one for answering questions."
"You might wanna grab that staff over there.." she said.
"Huh?"
"Without it you won't be able to fly."
"F-fly?" I said.
"Like actually fly? On my own?"
Mother laughed.
"Why of course! Now go grab it. We're gonna go on a little trip." she said gently pushing me from behind almost causing me to almost slip on the lake.
As I walked to my staff I look at my hands. I snap my fingers and a snap of ice forms. I smirk.
"Jack Frost..." I say to myself. I then thought of something and then turned quickly around.
"Hey, what happened to Jack Frost. I mean, the one before me?!" I yelled over to Mother.
"I'll explain everything on our trip Jack!" she said.
I turned back around and saw I was exactly in the place where the hole in the ice was before. It was pretty weird being in the same place where you died. I saw my staff and bent down to pick it up. It began to frost up in my hand. I began to grin.
"So...you basically were with Mother Nature all that time?" I said to Jack who had moved to my bed. He had moved next to me while he was telling his story.
"Yep...basically." He said nodding his head with a chuckle.
"Wow, that's awesome! Will I ever get to meet her?" I ask
"Hmm, maybe..but she's super busy. Ya know, makin' sure the animals and forests are in harmony, that type of thing.." he said jokingly.
I laughed.
"Well, what did you guys do for a whole year?"
"Well technically, we weren't together for a year. She just trained me on how to use my powers correctly and to keep from hurting anyone. Like we went to London and Canada and she taught me some awesome tricks there. And after 6 months, she left me off on my own to work on snow in other countries.." he explained
"Well why couldn't you just come here after you were done training?" I asked.
"Well, after I trained, it was June. And there isn't snow in Jersey in June Kat, obviously.." he said sarcastically with a smirk.
"Shut up.." I said.
He laughed.
"I'm just saying. I had to go to other places that needed my work the most. I went to Russia first, that was awesome..." he said with a smile looking at me. He seemed happy. Though I still couldn't get used to his eyes and hair.
"So, what's up with your eyes and hair?" I said scuffing up his hair. He pushed my hands away laughing.
"It comes with the job I guess."
"Hmm...I don't know if I can get used to it." I say jokingly putting my hand on my chin examining him.
"Oh really?" he said slyly raising an eyebrow.
I leaned away from him. I've seen that look before and I didn't like it.
"Jack? Why are you looking at me like that?" I scooted away from him. He scooted to lessen the space between us. This continued until I was on the edge of my bed.
"What!?" I said laughing. It was so awkward.
Faster than I could react, Jack tackled me to the ground. He pinned me down holding my arms in place. I then felt my wrists getting cold. I looked over my neck and saw ice rings holding my arms to the ground.
"Jack what are you doing! Let me up!" I commanded. He always loved torturing me.
Jack sat balanced on the foot board of my bed. He formed a snowball in his hands and began tossing it in the air.
"Meh, not until you say you love my hair."
"What?! That's so stupid! Let me up!" I struggle to get my wrists free.
"Actually, I've got a better idea." He said with a snap of a finger. He flew above me and stayed in mid air. One of his eyebrows lifted again and I was once again nervous.
"What?" I said afraid of what the answer was.
Jack suddenly began to tickle me. I hated being tickled, but I couldn't help but laugh.
"Jack...stop...please!" I said in between laughs. I tried kicking him but he would dodge them cleverly.
"Not...until you say it." He said laughing himself.
"Okay, I like your hair!" I yelled.
"That's not good enough." he said in a sing song voice tickling my feet.
"OKAY OKAY! I LOVE YOUR HAIR AND YOUR EYES! Okay!?"
After I had said that, he stopped tickling me. I felt the ice dissolve from my wrists and sat up, panting. Jack chuckled.
"Why thank you Kat, I'm flattered."
"Oh shut up!" I said standing up.
"Don't you have a blizzard to make somewhere or something?!" I said motioning toward my window.
"Haha, yea I do actually." he said bringing himself back down to the ground. He started to walk toward his staff. I suddenly started to get sad. I wasn't being serious. I didn't want him to leave. He had left for 8 months and I was starting to get used to have him around. When Jack picked up his staff from the ground and turned around he saw my frown.
He chuckled "What, you wanna come with me?" he asked.
"What? Like can I? Is that possible?"
He laughed "Yea of course..."
"Well, sure!" I said with a smile and excitement in my voice.
He then put his hood on and smiled.
"Okay, well go grab a jacket.."
