Celia sat down on the bench at Palm Woods Park with a sigh. It had been almost one year since that night at the hospital when the truth had come out about Calvin. Calvin had been charged with child abuse among other charges. He was offered a plea deal of five years in prison and termination of his parental rights to Maddie; however Calvin refused the plea deal. The case ended up going to trial.
It was a long process and very had but Celia knew that she had to go through with it, if not for herself then for her mom and sister. In the end Calvin was found guilty his sentencing hearing was in two weeks he was facing up to twenty years in jail and termination of all parental rights to Maddie.
Celia herself was starting to do better. She and her mom and sister moved in with her Uncle and both Celia and Maddie had started new schools. Celia loved her last year of High School, she was finally able to be herself and she actually made some really good friends. Celia had just finished her last day of school and her graduation was the following day and her eighteenth birthday was in one week.
As for Kendall, they were still going strong. He stood by her during the trial and he was her rock when she thought that she could not go on. Sometimes she still wondered what he saw in her. With all that she was going through and forced Kendall going through she still sometimes expected him to dump her and flee as fast he could. She was in love with him and glad he stayed with her, however their relationship was about to get a little tougher. Kendall and they guys were about to go on a yearlong worldwide tour in two days. She and Kendall were spending as much time as possible together until he leaves.
"Sorry I am late" said Kendall sitting down beside her and giving her quick kiss.
"No problem" said Celia smiling.
"I was thinking that we could go to the beach" said Kendall taking her hand and pulling her up with him.
"Sounds good" said Celia.
They walked along the beach until they found a private spot. They sat in comfortable silence watching the sunset. However Celia could tell something was on Kendall's mind.
"Okay what's up" she said turning to face Kendall.
"What do you mean?" he asked not meeting her eyes.
"I mean I can tell something is on your mind" she said with a small smile. "Are you nervous about tomorrow night?" she asked a small lump forming in her throat. She still found it hard to believe that tomorrow night was their first concert of a yearlong tour; that she would not see him for a year. The bright side was that the first concert was nearby so she would be able to see it.
"Sort of" he finally said turning to face her, he still looked upset. "I am going to be gone for a year" he finally said.
"I know" Celia said sadly. "I know you are going to miss Katie, your mom and hopefully me" she joked. "But you love performing and you are going to have an amazing time performing all over the world" she finished with a small smile.
"I know and of course I am going to miss you, I am probably going to miss you most of all" he said before letting out a sigh. "I just don't want to hold you back" he said not meeting her eyes.
"Kendall what are you saying?" Celia asked her heart speeding up.
"I mean a year is a long time to be away from someone. You're starting college and you are going to be meeting new people. I would understand if you met someone else and wanted to date them" he finished.
"Are you saying you want to break-up?" she asked tears running down her face.
"No" he said squeezing her hands and finally meeting her eyes. "I am saying that I do not want you to feel you have to wait around for me. I am going to be gone for a year and that you deserve the chance to meet new people and not feel tied down. That I don't want you feeling guilty if you meet someone new and have feelings for them" he finished.
"I love you and that's not going to happen" said Celia adamantly.
"Celia you don't know that" said Kendall with a sad smile.
"You're not just saying this so you can date some crazed fan girl are you" she asked wiping the tears off of her face.
"No trust me, I just want you to be happy" he said smiling.
"Fine" she said still believing that she would meet anyone else. "So in a year when you come back and I have not met anyone and when I am still in love with you, then what?" she asked.
"Then if you want I can continue to be your amazing boyfriend" he said with a smile.
Celia let out a small laugh "good" she said leaning over and kissing him.
"Good" said Kendall putting his arm around her and pulling her close.
The next morning passed in almost a blur. She happily went to her graduation ceremony which seemed to go by in a flash. Before she knew it she was walking across the stage and receiving her diploma. She could not help but to laugh when she heard her family, plus Kendall, Mrs. Knight, and Katie cheering for her as the principal handed her diploma. Before she knew it the ceremony was over and Kendall was rushing off to do a sound check for the concert that night.
"I'll see you tonight" said Kendall with a smile giving her a kiss.
"Of course and if I don't see you before the show break a leg" she said with a smile.
"So hurtful" he joked.
"Go practice" she laughed.
"I'm going" he called over his shoulder rushing through the crowd.
"So how late is he?" she asked turning to Katie.
"Let's just say I wouldn't want to be him right now" said Katie with a small frown.
"Then why did he stay so late?" said Celia with a laugh.
"You really have to ask that question" said Katie skeptically. Celia just smiled.
The rest of the day seemed to go by so fast. She spent the day celebrating with the family and friends. She was for the most part happy, but part of her was sad. She knew that tonight would be the last time she would see Kendall for a year. She did not have much time to think about it because before she knew it was time to leave for the concert. She grabbed the tickets and backstage passes and her little sister and cousin and headed to the concert. She was glad she talked her mom and Aunt into letting Maddie and Izzy go. Both girls were chatting happily in the backseat about the concert.
"I am so excited third row seats and backstage passes" Izzy practically screeched for the third time.
"Yep" said Celia smiling as she parked the car and opened the back door for the kids. Maddie paused and looked up at her sister. "You're acting happy, but you are really sad that Kendall is leaving" she said matter of fact.
Celia sometimes forgot her sister was only seven, she could be so perceptive. "I'm both" she admitted to her sister. "I am happy for him because he is going to have an amazing time and I am sad because he will be away for a year."
"Being a grown-up is confusing" muttered Maddie finally crawling out of the car.
"You can say that again" muttered Celia as they made their way inside.
"That was amazing my ears are still ringing from all the screaming" said Izzy slightly hoarse. It was a few hours later and they were waiting backstage with Mrs. Knight, and Katie to see the guys to say good-bye.
"Yeah mine too especially from all the screaming from the two girls sitting on either side of me" she joked giving her cousin and sisters shoulders a playful squeeze.
"Sorry it was so amazing" Izzy gushed.
"I know don't worry about it I am glad you enjoyed it" said Celia with a smile.
"Did you like it Maddie?" she asked her sister, Maddie nodded her head emphatically.
"Is it always like this?" she asked Mrs. Knight and Katie motioning to all the chaos going on backstage.
"Yep" they answered together.
"Wow" said Celia.
"Here they come" said Katie with a smile as she finally saw them coming.
"Hey baby sister" said Kendall hugging his sister.
"Hey big bro" she said laughing.
"You must be Izzy" said James noticing them. "Celia says you're biggest fan" he said with smile. Izzy just nodded to ecstatic to speak.
"Did you enjoy the show Maddie paddy?" asked Carlos.
"Yep this has been the best night ever" she said giving Carlos a hug; Carlos just smiled. Celia could not help but smile, Maddie still had them wrapped around her finger.
"Hey" said Kendall finally finding her.
"Hi" she said smiling.
"Hey Izzy, Maddie why don't we go over there and the guys and I can answer any questions you have" said Carlos wanting to give his friends some privacy.
"Okay" said Izzy finally finding her voice "I have a bunch."
"You did amazing tonight, you all did" said Celia smiling.
"Thank you" he said giving her a kiss. "I am really going to miss you" he finally said bringing up the subject that both of them had been dreading.
"Me too" she said blinking quickly to keep the tears away. "However you are going to do amazing and have an amazing time. We still can call each other, text and video chat it's not like we won't talk for a whole year" she said trying to find the bright side.
"Exactly" he said with a small smile "and you are going to do amazing in college and have an amazing time".
"Okay we better go check on Izzy" she said with a laugh as she noticed her cousin firing off question after question at the guys.
"Yeah" he said with a laugh as he took her hand, and he did not let go of her hand for the entire night.
The time came when the guys had to leave. She gave each of them a hug and wished them luck. She noticed Kendall crouched down talking to her sister and something he said made her giggle.
"Take care of Celia for me okay Mads" he said with a smile.
"I promise" she said giving him a hug "I'll see you in a year."
"You bet" he said with a smile.
"I'll go wait with Izzy" said Maddie to her sister as she made her way over to her cousin.
"I love you Celia" he said with a smile "I love you too" she said tears coming to her eyes.
"Remember what I said" he said seriously.
"I will but it's not going to happen" she answered honestly.
"Did anyone ever tell you, you are stubborn" he joked.
"No never" she joked back wiping at her eyes.
He did not say another word he pulled her into a hug and kissing her. No more words were needed they both knew how they felt about each.
"Sorry to interrupt but Kendall we really have to go" said Logan.
Kendall gave her a small smile before releasing her form the hug.
"See you in a year?" Kendall asked.
"Count on it" she said with a small smile as he watched him go.
