SKYLAR'S POV
She was lovely, quite different from everyone else I'd ever met. She didn't idolize me or look at me differently because of my title. And it was something refreshing, something no one ever did when I told them the truth. It had never occured to me before that someone who wasn't involved directly in Moroi politics would sympathize with me; she wasn't even interested in the political side of it all.
True, she was a human, an Alchemist, but that didn't mean I couldn't talk to her. Maybe she would be the one to understand me the most, just maybe. Even so, it was too early for it. I'd have to win her trust first. I'd have to make her look at me as a friend, and not just another Moroi.
Before going to the dance, I made a quick stop at our residence. It was dark and empty, except for the unsurprisingly lit light coming from under the door of my grandfather's office, the head of the Badica clan, which meant that he had no intentions of going to the dance.
I knocked on the door and soon after got a reply.
"Come in," my grandfather replied with his deep and intimidating voice. "Skylar."
"Grandfather." I supported myself on the door's frame once I opened it.
He stood behind his grand mahogany desk, staring out of the gigantic window behind it. He then turned around and looked at me with his intimidating royal blue eyes, the same shade as mine, the characteristic trait from the Badica clan. He wore his usual, short beard, and resembled a man in his late 30s or early 40s, instead of his actual age. He had pale blonde hair just above his broad shoulders.
He was wearing a black coat, a suit, and a cane was balancing in his right hand, as if he was ready to go outside, to the dance.
"You never go to these events, why today?" I asked even though I knew his answer.
"I need to confirm some things," he said, rounding the desk and exiting the room, "You know why."
I chuckled as he closed the door to the house. "Of course I do."
There was an eerie feeling in the house now that it was completely empty. I went to the library, where thousands of books were neatly piled on their shelves. On top of the fireplace, a huge portrait of my family that had been painted 10 years ago, looked back at me. Out of the six faces looking back at me, only two were alive now and I was one of them. It always brought me bad memories, and that is why I hadn't been in this room since I came back to Court a few months ago. Also the reason why I was about to do what I had in mind.
I grinned at myself, and walked to the closest shelf to my right. I pulled a book with a ragged cover whose title was The Antiques of Mon ChandriƩ and opened it to page 137. A sealed envelope with the Badica seal stared back at me.
"It's time," I voiced to myself.
"It's truly him!"
"It's been a while since anyone saw him."
"I can't believe my eyes."
"People say he retreated to his mountain villa and dissappeared from the public eye after that incident."
These were the expected reactions from the Moroi when they saw my grandfather at the ball. He could have even outshun the Dragomir queen at her own dance. He is one of the most powerful, almighty Royal Moroi socialites AND from the dying Badica line who owned several businesses in which more than half of human businesses worldwide were involved in. Not really impressive, until you find out he is a major government figure in the human world too. It was not common seeing him in public places, much less a Moroi event involving the Moroi leaders. Many Moroi feared him or were intimidated by him, and with reason.
"Skylar," the voice of a woman caught my attention as I laid at the back of the hall, staring at the dozens of Moroi surrounding my grandfather, dazed by his presence. "You made it."
"Seems like it," I replied, staring back at the scene. "You would have made me come anyways."
"Are you going to keep on secluding yourself from society?"
"If I can help it, I will. They're just but a bunch of hypocrites disguised as people."
"There's no point trying to fix you then." I stared back at her through my black and blue mask.
The woman talking to me was Artemis Szelsky. A high royal in her young twenties from the Szelsky clan, and a very dear person to me. She posed as the big sister I never had, and the sister I lost ever since that incident happened 8 years ago. She was there in my darkest moments, and she was here in the height of my life.
Physically, she would never pass as one of my family; she had bright red, semi-curly hair, and an uncommon trait among Moroi, green-brown heterochromia. But psychologically, we were two peas in a pod, maybe I was a more damaged pea, but we were still peas.
"You should know better, you have tried for 8 years." I smirked at her devilishly.
"What don't I know about you, you pest." she uttered in the most serious tone she could, mockery hidden in between.
"So loving, my dear Artemis."
We glanced back at where my grandfather was, and he stared at us. We both nodded at him, and he strode to the exit, followed by his three guardians.
"It's inevitable, then?" Artemis asked, regaining her composure.
"Indeed. I'm afraid it is inevitable now." I grinned to myself and supported myself on the wall as I closed my eyes.
"I'm ready to follow you anywhere, and you know it."
"I do." I re-opened my eyes to stare at her, but in the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a figure in red, her blonde short hair pinned up in a complicated hairstyle, and undoubtedly, the golden lily not completely hidden by her mask was showing. And she was with him.
I smirked and pushed myself off the wall and left Artemis with other people. Opening the doors to the exit, I went out and started walking along a line of trees.
Surely, everything will turn out fine, everything will figure out itself.
I kept on walking for a few minutes just thinking about my situation, when I heard rustling beside me.
"Seiren, how long have you been there?" I asked, coming to a halt in front of an old, oak tree at the edge of the forest.
"Not long," she replied as she landed and then kneeled on the floor, throwing herself from the highest branches of the tree.
"I need you to do something for me," I said without looking at her, "It's important."
"Anything you need."
"Look up Sydney Sage, and everything that has to do with her."
"Right away."
"And Seiren..."
"Yes?"
"Not a word to anyone, understood?"
"Yes, my lord."
She disappeared as quickly as she appeared and I stood still for a few moments staring at the space from which Seiren vanished. The wind was blowing strongly. I heard how the night around me carried messages from the wind. A storm was coming. Soon.
*devilishly grins and rubs hands while watching everyone coming up with theories*
TRY TO GUESS WHAT WILL HAPPEN :)
