Christina staggered over the property line behind Rory, a previous classmate of hers that was just revealed to be part barnyard animal. She was dazed, confused and sore all over from the journey.
She was from Brooklyn, so the hike hadn't been too long, as they'd taken a bus out as far as they could go, then walked the remaining four miles. Rory had tried to explain, but she hadn't been able to concentrate on anything since he'd rolled his long pants up to his knees (do animals have knees?), and kicked off his Converse.
Her eyes widened at the sight in the valley below her. Inside the valley was a big blue farm house, a volleyball court, a ring of cabins and other buildings and structures scattered throughout.
Rory pulled her down the hill, and began pointing to various things around them.
"Thats the Big House, the cabins, there's the lava wall- ow, looks like Connor Stoll just fell off…"
They were greeted by a girl Christina would guess was around sixteen. She had large green eyes and frizzy red hair, and was wearing jeans covered in marker doodles.
"Rory!" she said. "You're back! Is this her?"
Rory nodded, and gestured to Christina. "Christina, this is Rachel Dare. Rachel, this is Christina Orr. Rach, do you mind giving her the tour? I'm supposed to go check in with Mr. D."
At the mention of Mr. D.- whoever that was, Rory gulped, and began worrying on his bottom lip. Rachel patted his shoulder and smiled at the two, "Sure. And don't worry, Chiron just let him win Pinochle, so he's in a good mood."
This cheered Rory up a little, and he mustered a small smile, and began making his way down the hill. "Thanks Rachel. See you later Christina!"
Christina waved at him, and turned towards the red headed girl. Rachel grinned at her and tucked her hair behind her ear, so it was out of her face.
"So," she said. "What has Rory told you about camp?"
Camp? Was that what this place was?
"Um… nothing, I guess. We were on a field trip, and he told me that it was time, then dragged me here. What even is this place? You said it was a camp?"
"Look," Rachel sighed. "I'm probably not the best person to explain this, but I'll try. You know about the Greek gods, right?"
"You mean my mom or dad is a god? That's insane!"
Rachel shook her head, "It's not. It makes complete sense. In the ancient times, the gods liked to mate with mortals, why would it change? Do you have step-parent? If so, it'll help us find out if your immortal parents is a god or goddess."
"No," Christina said miserably. "I'm adopted."
"Hey, don't worry," Rachel told her. "You'll get claimed by your godly parents soon. You should get claimed really quick, since you're older than thirteen…"
"Why does my age matter?"
"A few months ago, at the end of the second Titan War, my friend Percy made the gods swear to claim their kids by the time they turned thirteen. It's not exactly working, but things are a little bit better. The Hermes cabin, where unclaimed kids go, isn't nearly as full."
The two started walking down the hill, and towards the farmhouse. Rory had mention something called 'the Big House.' Christina assumed that this was that house.
They walked out of the house, Christina feeling very overwhelmed, and slightly woozy from all the information that had been thrust upon her. According to the orientation film, she was at a place called Camp Half-Blood, a camp for the children of the gods. And she was one of them. Rory was a creature called a satyr, meaning he was half goat, and he was supposed to be her protector, since monsters were always after demigods. At camp, she would be trained to fight monsters, and learn other skills that were key to her survival as a demigod.
As soon as she was claimed by a godly parent, she would be assigned to a cabin with her half-siblings.
Christina turned towards Rachel, "So, who's your parent? Like, the one that's a god."
Rachel laughed, "Oh, I'm not a half-blood. Just a mortal!"
This confused her more, wasn't this camp supposed to be a place for only the children of the gods?
"I thought only demigods were allowed through the borders. How'd you get through?"
Rachel grinned mischievously, "I may be a mortal, but I'm also the Oracle of Delphi. The spirit lives within me, and I deliver prophecies from time to time. It's creepy, but I felt like I had to use my sight for something useful."
"Your sight?"
"You know how the film talked a little about the Mist?"
Christina nodded, curious to where Rachel was taking this.
"Well, I can see through the Mist, it's a gift I was born with. I put it to use, and became the next Oracle after Hades' curse was lifted."
Christina decided to pretend like she understood what Rachel was talking about, and asked her where they were going.
Rachel shrugged, "I guess I'll just give you a tour of the camp. We could head to the arena…"
Christina saw two people, a pretty blonde girl, clad in bronze armor and armed with a knife and a black haired boy, not wearing any armor, wielding a sword.
They were slashing and jabbing at each other, and the group that was watching them were stealthily passing money around, and Christina assumed they were making bets on the fight's outcome. The pair fighting would occasionally taunt the other, and the boy had a smug smirk on his face.
His sword managed to graze the girl's arm, leaving a shallow cut, but it only seemed to annoy her.
"Percy!" she yelled. "You're so going down!"
The boy- who must be Percy, only laughed. "In your dreams, Wise Girl! Does 'curse of Achilles' ring a bell?"
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a Yankees cap, wrestling it onto her head. Instantly, she disappeared and Percy groaned, "Cheater!"
Christina must've been hallucinating, because she could've sworn that some invisible force flipped Percy over completely in midair, making him land flat on his back. The blonde shimmered into existence above him, her foot on his chest, and a victorious grin on her face.
The small audience cheered and hollered and she took Percy's hand, helping him up.
The girl made eye contact with Rachel, and noticed Christina. She nudged Percy with her hip, and led him over to the two girls.
"Hey Rach," she grinned. "I guess you saw Perseus' epic defeat?"
Percy scowled, "Don't call me that."
Rachel laughed, "I did. Good job, Annabeth. Guys, this is Christina Orr, a new camper. Christina, this is Percy Jackson, a son of Poseidon, and Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena."
They both gave her friendly smiles, and Percy asked Rachel, "Has she been claimed?"
She shook her head, "Nope. Maybe tonight, at the campfire."
Percy sighed, "They promised…"
Christina assumed he was talking about the oath the gods had taken, to claim all of their demigod children. Rachel had said that it wasn't really working out.
In the back of her head, she wondered if Percy and Annabeth were dating. They seemed rather intimate with each other, but maybe they were just good friends. Christina hoped it was the latter; the son of Poseidon wasn't bad looking.
The question was answered, however, when as they left, Annabeth stood on her toes and threw her arms around Percy's neck, pressing her lips to his. He placed his hands on her hips and kissed her back, causing Christina's hope of a new boyfriend to disappear.
Rachel must've noticed her wistful expression, because she chuckled. "Oh, don't even try. Annabeth may seem nice enough, but if you so much as glance at her boyfriend, she won't hesitate to gut you like a fish."
