Annabeth wasn't excited to go to her cousin's wedding. It was bound to be incredibly boring- hanging out with a bunch of dull mortals all day, no thanks. She had been volunteered by her father to attend, since she had teacher work days, and she had agreed to go, only if Percy could attend as well. Thankfully, he let him come.
At least it was a Halloween wedding, that could be interesting. Annabeth loved Halloween, with everyone dressed up as monsters and strange creatures, being a demigod didn't seem so out there. She also loved anything scary, haunted houses, horror movies, the scarier the better. Her cousins lived down in North Carolina, and there was an amusement park that did a haunted version of itself for Halloween nearby.
The wedding was on Thursday, which left Wednesday, the day after Percy and Annabeth drove down to North Carolina, wide open.
They walked into the park, allowing their pre-purchased tickets to be scanned and their bags to be searched.
Percy grinned as they walked into the park, fog clouding their vision, and screams being heard in the distance.
"You sure you're ready for this, Wise Girl?"
She smiled back at him, "Oh, you bet."
For demigods, none of the people dressed as zombies, bloody wind-up toys, insane patients from the asylum, really scared them. They'd seen monsters, they'd actually been to hell and back. No, they weren't really scared, but the thrill was fun.
In Percy's opinion, the scariest part was the swing ride, where they were lifted up hundreds of feet into the air, and swung around in circles.
"Annabeth," he worried. "I'm not sure this is a good idea… Zeus…"
She rolled her eyes at him, "Gods, Percy. It's only a ride, and you just saved Olympus. I think he'll cut you some slack."
He didn't look happy about it, but he lined up in the queue with her, his sea green eyes large and filled with concern. Annabeth took his hand in both of hers, "Hey. If you don't want to go, we don't have to."
The son of Poseidon shook his head, swallowing hard. "No. It's just a ride, I'll be fine."
She didn't look convinced, but dropped the topic, quickly calculating how fast the line was moving.
"We should be next," Annabeth said. "Unless you'd rather just go through the Asylum."
"I'm going to do it. Its just a big swing."
The light haired teenaged boy in front of her glanced over his shoulder, giving Percy a weird look. Annabeth met his eyes, glaring at him, and he quickly turned away, looking forward.
It turned out that Annabeth's calculations had been correct, and they were in the next group to load up. They sat down and buckled up without saying a word, but as soon as the seats started rising, Percy gave a surprise yelp and latched onto Annabeth's hand. She squeezed back, and he relaxed slightly, but still sat rigid in his seat.
"See?" she said. "Not so bad afterall. No one's blasted you out of the sky, and you're not even in his territory all that much. He doesn't get mad when you go up in skyscrapers, does he?"
Percy took a deep, shuddering breath. "I guess you're right…"
Below them, they could see the entire park, and to keep Percy distracted, Annabeth started planning where they would go next. By the time the ride was over, they had decided to go get some food, and Percy was about as calm as he was going to get.
Percy ran when he saw the make-your-own-ICEE booth, and grabbed the largest cup, slapping money down on the table. Annabeth stood nearby, only raising an eyebrow at the costumed employees that attempted to scare her.
Percy was soon done, and went back over to his girlfriend, smiling at her. "You want anything?"
She shrugged, "Cotton candy, I guess."
Percy insisted that she pick the blue kind, but before she could reach into her pocket to get the small wad of cash she had brought, he put a hand on her waist, "I'll cover it."
Not listening to her protests, he paid the cashier, and dragged her away, towards the next scare zone. Percy was in the middle of telling Annabeth about his horrible homeroom teacher, when they heard a boy's voice, calling Percy's name.
The two turned around, their guard going up. Most of the time, when someone in public called their names, there was a monster trying to kill them. A redheaded boy was waving in their direction, and Percy's face lit up.
"Hunter?"
The boy walked towards them, a brunette girl in tow. "Hey man! What're you doing here?"
Percy gestured to Annabeth, "We're going to a wedding. What about you?"
"Oh, we have family down here. Who's your friend?"
He pulled Annabeth close to his side, "This is my girlfriend, Annabeth. Wise Girl, this is Hunter and his sister Shay. They go to Goode."
Hunter had been having a terrible time. Maybe it made him a wimp, but he hated scary things, so this was absolute hell. He'd been harassed by a mutilated scarecrow, chased by a zombie, and was pretty much terrified. His sister, however, was eating it all up. Shay was very interested in costume makeup, and had been walking up to monsters all night, trying to convince them to tell her what they did to achieve a certain wound.
Hunter had been following his sister around, cowering away from almost everyone, and wishing to be anywhere but there.
Dragging his sister behind him, he was heading to where he hoped was a safe zone, when he saw him. He had messy black hair, was tall, and was holding hands with a blonde. The blonde, Hunter didn't know, but he was positive that the boy was Percy Jackson.
"Shay," he said. "Isn't that Percy?"
Shay looked in the direction he was pointing, and nodded. "Yeah, I think it is! Percy!"
Her voice was quiet, there was no way Percy had heard her, so Hunter repeated the boy's name.
He turned, a sideways grin on his face, and called Hunter's name back. The blonde girl by his side was beautiful, with large gray eyes, and long tan legs. Percy introduced her as Annabeth, and with his arm around her waist, pulled her close.
So this was Annabeth. Percy talked about the girl all the time, and her appearance certainly met Hunter's expectations. Percy always talked about her like she was some sort of goddess, about how smart she was, how gorgeous she was, and how much he loved her.
Annabeth smiled at him, "Hi."
They talked for a while, found out that Annabeth had been Percy's girlfriend since his birthday in August, but that they'd been best friends since they were kids.
Hunter had to admit, they were a good couple. After a while, the "monsters" started circling around them, and Shay, sensing his distress, claimed that they had to go.
As they left, Hunter saw Annabeth laughing as she stuffed a handful of cotton candy into Percy's mouth, causing him to pick her up, throw her over his shoulder and march off as she beat his back with her fists.
