Nancy shoved her way through the kitchen, to the counter reserved for ready orders. She picked up a tray carrying two burgers, and read its ticket- table six. She hated her job. Working at a diner was never part of her life plan, but when she moved back to the city for college, her parents all but cut her off. She was originally from New Jersey, but she'd attended a boarding school in New York City when she was in middle school, and had wanted to go back for college. Nancy had worked hard to get into NYU, harder than she'd ever had to work before, but it was worth it.

Sure, she had a terrible job as a waitress earning minimum wage, and her apartment (that she shared with two other girls) had appliances that didn't work half the time, but she was going to the school of her dreams. Even if financially, she was barely scraping by.

Nancy pushed through the kitchen doors, so she was behind the soda-shop style counter of the restaurant, and made her way into the dining area. Table six- it wasn't in her sector, but the waitress who usually covered it was absent, so she and her co-worker, Natalie were taking turns delivering food and taking orders.

She forced a cheerful smile on her face, and used her free hand to smooth down her fifties-diner style apron. There was a couple sitting at the table, a black haired boy who wasn't facing her, and a blonde girl who was. The blonde was pretty, had a fair tan, and stormy gray eyes. She was laughing at something the boy had said, and they were holding hands across the table.

"Hello!" Nancy said. "I have your food…" she placed the identical plates in front of each of them. They looked about her age- twenty. The blonde smiled back at her, "Thanks."

The boy grunted his own response, and she just barely saw a flash of his face.

He had a Mediterranean complexion and striking green eyes, and there was something familiar about him. His eyes were filled with confusion, like he was thinking the same thing.

She had seen him somewhere before.

She figured that if she stayed any longer, it'd seem creepy, so she walked back to the counter, determined to figure out who this boy was.

Nancy absentmindedly wiped down the counter, wracking her brain, trying to remember who this guy was. He must've remember right before she did, because she heard her name being muttered. And then it hit her- Yancy Academy. He was Percy Jackson.

Percy Jackson, the boy she used to torment in sixth grade, before he was expelled. The one who was friends with the crippled boy, who no one ever heard from again.

She glanced over at their table, cursing to herself when Percy and she made eye contact. Hesitantly, she went over to the table, "How's your food? Is everything okay?"

The boy only looked up and deadpanned, "You're Nancy Bobofit."

She swallowed hard. Nancy didn't know why, but the boy that she used to tease and throw food at scared her. There was something in his green eyes, something hardened and intimidating.

"Y-yes." she stuttered. "And you're Percy Jackson."

"I didn't picture her that way," the blonde muttered, and Nancy chose to ignore her.

They met eyes, both just staring at each other for a while, before Percy broke eye contact. "Well, my burger's fine, what about your's Wise Girl?"

The blonde nodded, "It's good. Thanks."

Nancy took this as her cue to leave, and shuffled back into the kitchen, where she would try and process what had just happened.

The boy she used to torment was hot. And by the looks of it, he had a girlfriend. Wow, how the times had changed.
