Chapter 26: Bewilderment and Theories
When the guards opened the double doors for both Téa and Isis, all four didn't expect the scene they were seeing.
The tray slipped off of Isis' grip. She gasp, eyes wide and unshed tears from the previous days prior to their long poisoned coma suddenly came pouring down as she ran clumsily towards the Pharaohs.
Said Pharaohs were sitting up, staring at their two guest in complete bewilderment. Isis checked on both of them, shaking their heads side to side to check if there were any other body or head injuries that she missed from the past couple of sleep deprived days. Non so far. She sigh in relief and hugged them both, even though she knew it wasn't appropriate.
But they were friends, damn it, and she would screw the rules if it meant making sure they were really alive and not an illusion.
She let go of both of them and finally got a good look at their faces. Their skin color was still a bit pale, but mostly looked like it's full of life. They were also still a bit sweating, but a nice luke warm bath would do the trick.
"Uhm, Isis, what's going on?" Yami finally asked after silently letting his friend check over him and his husband.
Isis took a good long look at her friend's eyes before saying, "Both of you fainted at the wedding, when we had a toast. Turns out you got poisoned, and was in a coma for almost a week." she sniffed, " I thought you weren't going to make it."
Yami's eyes widen at this; "What?!" he exclaimed as the double doors slammed open, revealing Seto, Bakura, and Malik.
"Pharaohs!" they all explaimed at once, and walked towards their bed.
Atem frowned, "Where's the others? and did you find the culprit?"
All of three who recently came in looked at each other uncomfortably.
Isis took this time to glance at Téa, who stood silently looking at her from the corner of the room near the double doors, tray and other empty equipment at hand. She slightly nod her head before she averted her gaze back to the Pharaohs and cleared her throat.
"How about this, take a nice warm bath first and then we'll discuss this after everyone has settled down. That means tomorrow." she said with finality as she signaled Téa with her hand behind her back to get out while no one was looking. Téa obliged.
Seto and the others frowned at this, saying that they disagree with that plan as this was a very crucial thing to discuss. But Isis was having non of it.
"No. Both Yami and Atem needs a proper bath and meal as they haven't had anything for the past few days. They won't be in a better shape to think about the situation much if they are still a bit out of the world. We'll discuss this tomorrow and that is final. Understood?!"
They nodded.
"Good, now get going." She said in a motherly voice that no one in their group has ever disobeyed, Pharaoh or not.
She sighed and reached for the doors when Atem called her. She turned her head to the side, though her eyes wasn't focused on the Pharaoh; avoidance clearly seen in her posture as she asked, "Yes?"
There was a pause.
"Where's Yugi?"
An unknown look flashed upon Isis' face, before turning her head completely forward; the back of her head facing the Pharaohs.
"I don't know, your highness." she answered before continuing forward, and not looking back.
"So what happened while we were asleep." Atem went straight to the point as he walked towards his throne with Yami beside him.
Guards were in as well as the High Priests and Priestess. They went to their positions as the Pharaohs sat in their throne.
"Speak!" The Nameless Pharaoh ordered with a blank face, baritone voice booming throughout the whole Throne Room. Everyone but his friends and lover, flinched.
A High Priest stepped forward, trying his hardest not to crumple at that moment as he spoke, "We had a lock down right after we stopped the wedding, Your Highness. The kingdom's people that was already inside the wall did not go home yet, and the royal guests are in their room. The guards stationed in every corner of the palace, and we are trying our best to feed everyone that has been stuck in here for almost a week now."
Another Priest stepped forward, "We have been trying to investigate the crime but still have not found the culprit yet."
At this line, Mahado stepped up, "But we have one person that is considered as the doer of the crime, Your Highness."
Atem slightly narrowed his eyes at this.
Yami spoke up, "And who is this person, High Priest Mahado?"
"Yugi, Your Highness."
Their group gasp at that. Atem's poker face went down to a frown.
Mahado kept going, "No one had seen him since the day of your wedding. We believe that he had disappeared after the toast. We never got to see him again."
Yami shifted on his seat, clearly uncomfortable. He wasn't liking this one bit.
But Mahado wasn't done, "We searched the entire Palace for him but we never spotted him anywhere. We think that he had escaped before we had the lock down."
Isis wasn't liking this one bit. Even though he's her friend, she doesn't believe a single word he says; she couldn't. She love Yugi like her little brother.
So she quickly stepped forward, "There are more, Your Highness."
Atem's fierce gaze was on her the moment she spoke up. Her body quivered, her eyes looking down and not at him because of the sheer power his gaze emits.
"And who might these people be, Isis?" Atem didn't bother with the title as he looked at her with a blank look.
She gulped, not used to this pressure since the last time Atem was so emotionless; and that was his first reign in Egypt. Years ago.
"I f-found out about Téa, and she confessed to me yesterday about doing such crime. Joe, Malik, and Ryo also have gone missing." she continued.
Bakura growled at her but did nothing as he knew how important this meeting was. Malik was no better though, as he was being hold down by two guards after he almost reached for Isis' neck. Isis glanced at them with an apologetic look.
"Although they disappeared a day or three after the wedding." she finished.
Yami looked at Atem, but the 'Nameless Pharaoh' just looked at Isis with his intense gaze. Yami didn't like that grim look he's seeing, but he can't help but have the same look as his husband's. He didn't like their theories at all, knowing that the crime was enough to put someone to a death penalty. but it has to be done. He took his husband's hand and looked at the High Priests and Priestess.
"Bring the person of your theory. We'll start the trial once you get them."
