Chapter 26: The Ripple Effect
Aunt Millie cried.
For the first time in Alicia's life, she held her aunt, whilst she cried.
As tired as Tara and Alicia were, when they discovered what they had, they knew there would be no way to delay calling everyone back.
"What did you find?" Aunt Millie had been the first one to show up, but Tara sat her down with a cuppa and told her to be patient.
Once everyone else had stumbled in, Aunt Millie asked again. This time Alicia took control of the situation and looked at her aunt.
"What can you tell us about Uncle Melvin?" She asked, getting straight to the point.
Aunt Millie was thrown by the question, of course she was, because she hadn't see, heard or thought about her older brother in ages.
"What does he have to do with anything?" She asked, still flustered.
"We don't know if he does or not, Aunt Millie." Tara said truthfully. "But could you please, just tell us what happened to him? We remember very little of what the grandparents told us."
Aunt Millie took a few moments to compose himself, as she tried to remember everything about the brother she hadn't seen since he had left home at sixteen.
"He was my oldest brother, the first born and as a result, he had spent a lot of time helping take care of us younger children." She told them, as they all stayed silent. "I know that when he was younger, he spent most of his time with our mother, learning the craft. He was an excellent student, mum always said, and he showed great promise to become the head of the coven."
"But what happened to him, Aunt Millie? Why did he disappear from the family?" Alicia asked her gently, noticing a vulnerability in the woman that had never been present before.
Millie shook her head, slightly, as if to knock all the puzzle pieces into place. "When he was about fourteen, something in him changed. He stopped practicing the craft altogether, which caused huge rows with Mum. As he got older, the rows got worse and he stopped coming home most days. It all came to an end when he was sixteen.
He had been gone with some mates, for nearly a week we didn't see him. When he finally did come home, he told mum and da that he was leaving and never coming back. I was nine at the time. I remember crying, begging him not to leave me, he gave me a hug and told me he couldn't live this life anymore. He didn't want to practice magic and if he stayed, he said he'd be forced to do it." Millie said, tears streaming down her face. "The thing with magic is, as you're all aware, if you don't practice, if you don't use it, it stops."
"So he never wrote? To any of you?" Alice asked.
"Once he left, he was gone." Millie confirmed as she wiped her tears away. "Now, can you please explain what this has to do with Emily Fitch?"
Tara and Alicia handed over the papers they had printed off, passing around copies to everyone. Sophia started reading them as soon as her fingers touched the pages.
For about ten minutes it was silent in the room, until Sophia muttered out. "Yes!" She looked to her mum. "Is this for real?" Aunt Millie finished reading, and glanced up at Alicia, waiting for an answer as well.
"Melvin O'Dowd changed his named by deed poll, at the High Court in Dublin, at the age of sixteen to Melvin Reid. He procured a job as a labourer, moving around Ireland until he met a young woman," Alicia read the facts her and Tara had gleaned from the Internet, "a young woman by the name of Maureen McEvoy." The whole room exploded as Alicia told them about the girl that Millicent had cursed.
"Are you telling us, that out of the millions of people in Ireland, she was able to...find a Child of Gemini? Isn't that a bit too convenient?" Sophia was shocked.
"We're not sure of the details, because as soon as they married, they emigrated to Scotland, where Melvin started a very successful business and Maureen, by all accounts, became a housewife and mother." Tara explained. "We need to talk to Jenna Fitch, maybe she knows something, has some sort of family history written down, a diary even."
Aunt Millie was at a loss for words. She had missed her brother Melvin after he had left, but over the years, after losing her other two brothers and most of her sisters, leaving only her and Millicent behind, the pain of losing him had almost disappeared.
But here he was, in black and white, finally after all these years and the yearning that Millie had thought long dead for a beloved brother long gone hit her hard. So hard in fact that when the tears came back with a vengeance, she did nothing to stop them and allowed her nieces to care for her.
"Why won't you just tell me what it is?" Emily whined as she threw herself into the big plush chair that was situated in front of Naomi's desk. She had been pestering her girlfriend for two days about the big birthday surprise she had in store for the twins.
Both girls had silently agreed to skirt around the issue of the change in their pulses, Emily had a habit of switching the subject every time Naomi tried to bring it up. So they just went about their days normally.
"No." Naomi replied, smirking to herself, keeping her down.
"C'mon, Naoms!"
Naomi kept going through some paperwork, without looking up. She was having too much fun with this. "No, Ems."
"What if I told you I'd be very...appreciative?" Emily switched tactics as she left the chair and came to stand behind Naomi, leaning down to wrap her arms around the blonde from behind, placing her chin on Naomi's shoulder and spoke softly into her ear.
Naomi swallowed the lump that suddenly form in her throat, because damn if Emily didn't almost just make her crack. "N-not gonna happen, Emily." She stated as she swallowed again when Emily started to place kisses along Naomi's neck.
"Pretty please?" It was said so quietly, in that husky voice that always brought Naomi to her knees. Emily knew she wasn't getting to the other girl, and she thought for sure that she had gotten her way when she felt Naomi's hands grip hers.
Naomi extracted herself from Emily's hold and stood up. "No, Emily. I'm not telling you," Emily grunted in frustration, making Naomi smile, "and this is so beneath you!" She gestured to all of Emily, causing the redhead to laugh. "Trying to bribe me with sex is so last year, Ems!"
Emily couldn't stop laughing as Naomi stepped away from her. "But you know I hate surprises, babes!"
"I know you do, but I love surprising you, so suck it up, buttercup!" Naomi gathered up the files she was working on and threw them into her work bag. "I'm almost tempted to go to the studio without, if you keep this up." She said as she left the room.
Emily shook her head, but the smile was still firmly on her face. "Fuck that! You ain't leaving me here alone! If you won't tell me what the surprise is then I might as well get some work done." She shouted as she grabbed up her own bag and followed Naomi out of the room.
When she caught up to the taller girl, Emily reached out to grab her hand and laced their fingers together, swinging their joined hands between them as they made their way out of the house and into the waiting car.
Alicia and Sophia had been elected to contact Jenna. Two days after their discovery, they found themselves pulling up the street, coming to a stop in front of the Fitches residence.
"Why can't we tell Naomi about this again?" Sophia asked, still unsure about keeping this from the blonde.
"Because we want to have concrete evidence before that happens." Alicia sighed loudly, tired after caring for her aunt after their revelation. "Acting without thinking is what's gotten us into this mess in the first place, Sophia! So I'll thank you kindly to keep your mouth shut!"
Sophia cringed as her mum snapped. "Sorry."
Alicia sighed again as she scrubbed her face with her hands. The last couple of days had started to wear her out. "I'm sorry, Soph, it's just...this is what happens when you use Dark Magic."
Sophia felt a lump form in her throat. "I know, Mum."
"You did the right thing, Sophia." Alicia stated as she glanced up toward the house. "By coming to us, and telling us what you did...," she smiled at her daughter, "that was the right thing to do."
"I know." Sophia replied with a small, sad smile.
"Can I ask you something?" Alicia asked, tentatively, almost hesitantly, waiting until Sophia nodded. "What changed your mind? After all this time, why did you come to us for help?"
Sophia gave the question a lot of thought before answering. "Do you remember how Naomi was when we first met her? How much of a bitch she was?" She asked her mum.
"How could I forget?" She replied, with a smirk.
Sophia chuckled at her mum's answer. "Exactly! The thing is, she didn't stay that way. The first year I tormented the hell out of her, constantly checking up, talking at all hours of the day...relentlessly. I wanted to make for sure she wasn't forgetting about Ashley or me. And for that first year she was horrible, but then the second year rolled around and something changed in her, she changed."
"How?"
"She stopped trying to drink me away, for a start. I don't know, she just...seemed resigned to what had happened and became determined to put others first." Sophia told her mum, a small smile in place. "You know, I forced her to go to Ashley's memorial."
"What?" Alicia was shocked by her daughter's admission.
"I thought she would cave at the pressure of being around Ashley's family, but she went, scars and all."
"I've gotta hand it to you, Soph," Alicia blew out a breath, shaking her head, "you've definitely got a knack for evil, girl."
"It's not something I'm proud of Mum, and you shouldn't either." Sophia stated guiltily.
"I'm not saying I'm proud, love." Alicia replied. "Actually, not to make matters worse than they already are, but I'm quite disappointed to be honest. And I'd never thought I'd say that about you."
Sophia had to fight the lump that had formed in her throat, shame for what she had done building back up again. "I know." She said quietly, fighting back the tears that sprang into her eyes. "Shall we go?"
Alicia and Sophia walked up to the large house, rang the bell and waited.
Jenna heard the door bell just as she finished setting the table for tea. She called for Rob and went to answer it.
She knew who they were. When Alicia had called yesterday to arrange a meeting, she had told Jenna who she was and a little about why she wanted to meet, so as soon as Jenna hung up the phone she immediately called Cook.
The phone rang twice before it was answered. "'Ello?" Cook's voice floated across the line.
"James?"
"Mrs Fitch...I mean, Jenna? Is everything alright?"
Jenna smiled at the concern she heard. "James, you said to call if anyone contacted me about Emily?"
"Has Mandy been harassing you?" He asked, his voice hardening at the thought.
"No...no, nothing like that, but...,"
"Ma'am, who contacted you?" He asked trying to rack his brain about who could be left helping Mandy. "Was it her parents?"
"No...it was Alicia Moore." Jenna stated firmly, hearing that Cook was getting upset.
"What? Sophia's mum?" Cook asked, shocked, and received a yes from Jenna. "What did she want?"
"She said she had some questions about my grandparents? But she asked me not to say anything to Emily or Naomi." Jenna explained. "She wants to meet with me tomorrow...w-would you be able to be here for that?" She asked, her voice small.
"Jenna, are you alright?" Cook could hear the shakiness of her voice and the concern flared up.
"I'm just curious why they want to know about my grandparents, it just seems a bit surreal, you know?"
"What time are you to meet her and where?" He decided it would be good for Jenna to have some protection, just in case this was Mandy trying to get to Emily.
"I talked her into tea, tomorrow at three, here at the house. It'll be her and her daughter." Jenna told him.
"Alright, I'll be there wiv one of the guys." Cook assured her, allowing Jenna to breath a little easier.
"James, could you not say anything to the girls about this just yet?" Jenna asked quickly, knowing the young man well enough by to know that he would feel obligated to inform Naomi about this. "I only ask because I don't want either Emily or Naomi to worry about this if it's nothing."
Cook had been about to protest, but Jenna made sense and so after a minute or two of thinking it over, he agreed with her.
Rob and Cook stepped out of the lounge just as Jenna opened the door leaving Bradley, the hired bodyguard Cook had brought with him in case there was trouble, still sitting in the lounge. Thank goodness Jenna sent Jamie to Gordon's house earlier, because she did not want him knowing about this just yet.
"Alicia?" Jenna asked, earning a smile from the other woman.
"Yes. Alicia Moore and this is my daughter, Sophia." Alicia confirmed, extending her hand toward Jenna, relieved when she accepted it and shook her hand. "I'm sorry about this, springing this on you."
Jenna smiled a tight lipped smile as she eyed Sophia, knowing the story behind her and Naomi's history. "It's no problem. I'd like to introduce you to my husband, Rob," another handshake, "and I believe Sophia knows James Cook." A glare from Cook sent to Sophia as she blushed and mumbled a yes, while Alicia shook his hand as well.
"I wish I could say it's a pleasure, but I can see this is hard for you." Alicia told them.
"Shall we have some tea?" Jenna indicated the door that led to the dining room.
Alicia smiled, grabbing the strap on her shoulder and hitched the bag that carried all the papers she had, a little bit higher. "That would be lovely. It's quite the drive down these days."
Cook waited until Jenna had passed out cups to everyone, before he addressed Alicia. "Excuse me, Mrs Moore," he caught her attention, "but why are you here?"
"We have business with Mrs Fitch, not you!" Sophia replied defensively, as Cook glared at her.
"For the time being, the Fitches business is my business! You do remember Mandy, right?" Cook snapped back at her.
"James, please?" Jenna said in a soothing voice, causing him to take a breath and try to calm down. When she could see that he had, she turned to Sophia and saw the blush on her face. "Mrs Moore-,"
"Please call me Alicia," she stated as she started pulling papers out of her bag, the one showing Jenna's family lineage right on top, and she slid them over to Jenna along with her own family tree and the court document from Dublin, "because family shouldn't be formal with each other."
"Effy, stop it!"
Katie had been trying for the last hour to finish typing up a financial report for Gina but she kept getting interrupted by Effy's roaming hands, which normally wouldn't be a problem, because Katie was usually up for some sexy times. And since the night Naomi gave her and Emily her gift Katie had taken her relationship with Effy to the sexy time level, repeatedly.
Katie had admitted to Effy that in the past couple of days, she had had more sex with Effy than she'd ever had with her last boyfriend and that was almost a year ago. But that was because Effy was insatiable.
"Katie! It's been a three hours already!" Effy pouted playfully, feeling the need to goad the older twin, trying her best to get Katie to stop looking at her laptop.
"The last time I checked, Elisabeth...," Katie raised an in a perfect arch, sending Effy a look, "a work day was usually around eight hours."
"We're allowed a break, aren't we?" Effy smirked as she crossed her arms in front of herself.
Katie snorted at that remark, shaking her head. "Just because you have money doesn't mean that we all have money. I have to work, Effy." She said flippantly, turning her attention back to the report.
Effy sat up straight in her chair, regarding the other girl. "What is that supposed to mean, Kay? Are you implying that I haven't earned what I have?"
Katie heard the tone of voice that the words were said in and her heart skipped a beat. "No," she stated calmly, realising that she had upset Effy, "I'm not implying anything of the sort. I was teasing, Effs, that's all. As if my family's not a bit wealthy, yeah?"
"Because I have, you know." Effy's voice changed from challenging to sad. "I didn't receive anything from my parents."
Katie looked at her girlfriend in shock. "Why not?"
"Because that's not how my parents operated and they think I've disappeared."
"You've never contacted them at all since the curse started?" Katie asked, knowing that Effy's life before the curse was a touchy subject.
Effy shook her head. "They moved to Dallas, Texas about a year after the curse started. My father's business exploded in the States, so...," she paused feeling a lump form in her throat. "My brother Tony is the only one who knows what had happened but even he doesn't know exactly where I am. Besides, he lives in Italy now. Has done for the last three years."
Katie felt her heart break over Effy's words, and she stood up and rounded the corner of her desk to sit herself firmly on Effy's lap. "Oh, babes," she whispered as she place a chaste kiss on Effy's lips, "I'm so sorry. If I had known...I would have thought before I spoke." She explained with more kisses.
Effy reciprocated those kisses with some of her own which turned heated quite quickly and before Katie knew it, they raced upstairs to Effy's rooms, because the were closer.
The blood pumped through Effy's veins causing her heart to beat so hard, as layer by layer she undressed the older twin. And just like every other time since the first time, Effy felt as if she was unwrapping the greatest present she'd ever received. When she had a naked Katie in front of her, she gently laid her back on the bed, then stood up and just admired her.
Effy had been with a lot of people in her life, not saying she was a slag, but she knew how to have a good time. But no one, not any guy or girl she had ever been with, no one compared to Katie Fucking Fitch.
There was something special about the older twin that made Effy feel invincible. Like she could do anything, that she was worth more than she'd ever thought she could be.
"You are so exquisitely breathtaking." Effy breathed out softly and when Katie heard her, she blushed. Even that was beautiful to Effy as she watched it spread from her chest outward, slowing creeping across Katie's body and moved to chase the blush with her lips.
Katie realised in that moment that a nuclear bomb could drop from the sky and wipe out all of humanity, but as long Effy's lips were anywhere on her body, she would die happy.
The first time they made love, and that's what it had been because Katie had never experienced anything like it before, Effy took her time exploring every inch of Katie's small body. It was almost as if she was discovering a new world and she wanted to map it out, memorising every spot that would cause a reaction from the older twin.
Effy kissed her way down Katie's body, slowly taking her time, hitting some spots twice if only to make Katie writhe beneath her. She reached down and ran her fingers through Katie's slick folds and gasped at how wet she was.
"Effy?" Katie moaned as Effy slowly pushed one finger inside her and started to pull out. "Fuck me!" She whispered hoarsely, afraid to speak any louder.
Effy smirked as she stared into Katie's eyes. "Well, since you asked so politely and all...," Effy renewed her efforts to explore Katie's wonderful body and made sure that she was the only thing on Katie's mind for the rest of the day.
Jenna was looking at the papers as Alicia spoke, and gasped when she saw the family connection.
"What are you saying?" Rob spoke up, glancing at the papers as well.
"I'm sure you're well aware of Naomi's curse, yes?" Alicia asked before she explained anything else. When Jenna and Rob both answered yes, she smiled. "It seems as if Naomi's stumbled upon a Child of Gemini."
"Would you care to explain that to me, because I don't see how my daughter, or any of my children for that matter, are "Children of Gemini"!" Jenna's voice was icy but she couldn't help it. "I think this...," she said as she picked up the pieces of paper, "is rather low, don't you?"
Sophia and Alicia both went to talk at once, but Jenna was on a roll, as Rob and Cook watched.
"Don't you think you've done enough to Naomi?" She asked Sophia. "Aye, her and Emily have told me everything, and now that Naomi's happy, you've decided that the curse wasn't enough?"
Sophia scrambled to explain. "Mrs Fitch, I'm not trying to hurt Naomi anymore than I already have, I'm trying to help her!"
Jenna stopped to take a breath, to calm down herself, as Sophia's words sunk in.
"What?"
"Jenna, Sophia came to us, the family, because she thought there was no way to break the curse but...," Alicia paused as she pulled the papers toward her once again so she could draw a mental picture for Jenna, "you're grandfather, Melvin," she ran her finger along the lines of Jenna's family tree, "was my mother's eldest brother." She pointed out on her own family's tree.
Jenna picked up the court document, recording the name change and then looked up to Alicia.
"So what? This doesn't prove anything at all?" Jenna replied, but doubt laced her voice.
"What proof do you have?" Cook asked, as Jenna passed him the papers, and he scanned them.
"My family are the Children of Gemini." Alicia replied wearily, suddenly feeling the last three days catch up to her, but then looked at Jenna. "You and your children are Children of Gemini."
Jenna gasped loudly, while Cook scoffed.
"That's not proof, Mrs Moore," Rob spoke up calmly, "that's just your word."
"Trust me Rob, I understand how this sounds too coincidental, I really do. Because if we're wrong, we've gotten everyone's hopes up for nothing." Alicia said whilst taking a sip of tea. "But that's why we've come to see you today, Jenna. Did your grandparents have any type of family history recorded anywhere? Documents, letters...a diary, perhaps? Did your grandparents ever talk about before they married? Anything at all?"
Jenna thought about it, when a bedtime story her grams used to tell her, filtered through her memories. "Grams told me that...," she faltered, as she tried hard to remember it all, "when she was a young girl, an evil witch had placed a curse on her, so she had to find her one true love...and how she searched and searched, until one day she had been walking down the high street, when she felt...," Jenna trailed off, as a clearer picture of her grams formed in her head and she could hear the words crystal clear.
Alicia could see something shift in Jenna's eyes and she smiled a tiny smile. "Pulses?"
"Yes." Jenna whispered. "Faint at first, she didn't know what it meant, so she ignored it and went on her way. But then a few days later...she felt it again and that time she followed it...she walked until they faded then she would turn in a different direction until the grew in strength...for days she would follow those pulses, until one day she came face to face with my grandda...,"
"You and your son James were born in May, correct?" Sophia asked as she glanced at her papers.
"That's right, how did you know?" Jenna wondered.
"The Internet." Sophia replied nonchalantly. "And Emily and Katie in June...all of you are born under the Gemini sign."
"You need to explain better." Cook stated, feeling a headache come on and in need of a drink. This is why Naomi and Effy were better at this than him, they understood this shit! "Why does being born a Gemini make a difference?"
Alicia told them everything then. From Sophia going to her grandmother, the lunch with Gina and Naomi, the pulses between the two girls, finding out about Jenna's grandfather, Aunt Millie and the rest of the coven, and how her own grandfather called them the Children of Gemini, right down to Millicent cursing Maureen McEvoy.
It took a while, with Jenna, Rob and Cook all asking questions along the way, plus a pause so that Jenna could bring in more tea and offering to prepare a light lunch. So as they enjoyed something to eat, Alicia finished explaining everything she knew.
"That's why I came to see you, Jenna." Alicia said as soon as she was done. "Anything you might have can help solidify the theory, and then that way we can at least give Naomi some kind of hope. Doesn't she deserve us to put in that effort? Hasn't she suffered enough because of my daughter?"
Jenna gave the matter a lot of thought throughout the afternoon. She honestly believed that Alicia and her daughter were here to help Naomi, and Emily in a round about way, and if that was indeed the case then she knew that she would help if she could.
"I just want to make it right." Sophia said quietly, daring a glance at Cook and Jenna. "I need to make this right."
"Why?" Cook asked.
"Because Ashley would never have approved of what I did and she would have been disappointed in me and I can't live the rest of my life knowing that and that I've hurt an innocent person." Sophia explained, tears falling quietly.
Cook had grown up a lot in the five years or so, and he considered himself a pretty good judge of character. Nothing like how he was when he and the girls were younger, thank god. So as he measured up Sophia, sitting before him, asking for a chance to make things right, he knew she was sincere.
"I want you to know that what I'm about to say to you is hard for me, Sophia but...I believe you." He said, making her snap to attention and look at him. "You see, the thing is...what you did to Nai...,"
"I know that, Cook. But can't you just once, picture it from my side?" Sophia implored him.
"When I found out about Ashley, I thought the same as you, Sophia!" Cook said exasperatedly, standing up and stepping away from the table. "I understood your side of this!"
Rob saw the barely contained energy that was rolling off the young man in waves and grew worried. "Stay calm, lad. You getting angry at her won't solve anything, right?"
Cook stopped his sudden pacing and acknowledged Rob. "Yer right, Rob." He agreed scrubbing his hands over his face and taking a deep breath before taking his seat once again to face Sophia and Alicia.
"I thought the same thing, that what Naomi did to that poor girl pushed her too far. I asked Ashley to walk away from Naomi, every time I could corner her alone, I would tell her that Naomi was just gonna use her and then leave when she got what she wanted. I begged her to go back to you, told her that Naomi wasn't worth Ashley's kindness but she refused, Sophia. Ashley told me not to worry about her, but I did!" He told her as he hung his head. "It's the only time Naomi's ever disappointed me, but this?" He looked back up at Sophia. "She didn't deserve this."
"You're absolutely right, James." Alicia said calmly, making sure to keep eye contact when he looked at her. "That's why Sophia's powers will be bound come the summer solstice."
Cook didn't quite understand what Alicia was telling him, but he chose not to inquire about that because he simply didn't care at the moment.
"I think we're getting off track just a bit." Alicia said to Jenna.
"Yes. You're right." Jenna agreed, making a decision. "When my mother passed away a few years ago I inherited everything, including half a dozen boxes of my grandparents things. I didn't have the heart to go through any of it so Rob stored everything in the attic." She explained, sadly.
Alicia felt a small stirring of hope as Jenna spoke. "Would you be willing to go through it now?" She asked, keeping a lid on her excitement, but Jenna hesitated. "Please, Jenna? If nothing else, it'll help sooth my aunt's nerves."
"What do you mean?"
"Aunt Millie and my mother are the last two surviving siblings. She basically raised my sisters and I when my mother turned to Dark Magic, and she's been absolutely wrecked since we found out about the family connection with you." Alicia explained, feeling a twinge of sorrow at how broken Aunt Millie had seemed to be the last couple of days. "That's why she didn't come here herself. She wanted to, she really wants to meet you, but we all agreed it was for the best if I came and sorted everything first so her hopes weren't raised."
"I'll make a deal with you." Jenna told her, still feeling a mix of doubt, sadness and wonder. "I'll go through my grandparents things tonight, if I find anything, then I'll allow you to go through them."
"Mum, we could get a room here for the night, that way we don't have to drive all the way home." Sophia said, knowing that they stood a chance of finding answers.
Alicia considered Jenna's proposal and Sophia's suggestion. It was as good as it was going to get for the time being. "Alright, it's a deal." Alicia said as she pulled a business card out of her bag. "Here's my card, it's got my mobile number on it."
Alicia and Sophia stood up, followed by Jenna and Rob, and they made there way to the door. They were saying goodbye when Alicia leant in to give the other woman a hug, feeling Jenna stiffen at the contact.
"Blessed be, Jenna." Alicia said as she pulled away.
Jenna and Rob watched them walk down the path to their car.
"What do you think, love?" Rob asked as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, knowing that this had shaken Jenna up a bit.
"I'm thinking you should bring those boxes down." Jenna replied distractedly, suddenly feeling a flare of hope for Naomi and Emily. "If this is all true, then I have a chance to make my daughter happy."
Rob leant down, placing a kiss on her temple, before he turned back into the house and calling for Cook to give him a hand, leaving Jenna standing in the front door alone thinking how this was a chance to help make things right.
Cook had volunteered to stay for as long as he could, so he and Rob along with Bradley carried the boxes from the attic into the dining room. He had told Bradley to head back to the Campbell residence, and once the bodyguard left, Cook turned to Jenna.
"So...do we just dig in?" He asked, looking at the six boxes lined up on the six-seater table and then up to Jenna.
"Seems as good a plan as any. We'll take two each." Jenna said as she walked toward the two end boxes and lifted the lid off the first one and Rob and Cook followed suit. "I remember my grandfather keeping a journal, one that no one was allowed to touch. He wrote in it every night at the end of the day." She said, to no one in particular as she started to gently pull out papers piece by piece.
"So we're looking for a journal?" Rob asked as he too pulled out papers.
"I don't think we should keep it to just a journal, Rob." Cook said distractedly as he pulled a folder out of his first box. "Anything pertaining to Melvin O'Dowd should seal the deal, right?"
Cook slid the folder along the table to Jenna, who noticed the official seal and the "Príomh-Oifig na hArd-Chúirte" with "Central Office of the High Court" in Gaelic and English stood out in bold letters. Underneath was stamped again in Gaelic, English translation beneath it, "Cóipeanna Doiciméad Oifigiúla" in red, "Copies of Official Documents".
With a shaking hand, Jenna picked up the folder and opened it slowly. She started reading, her eyes taking in every word written on the page, each word stoking the tiny inkling of hope she had until it blazed.
"Rob?" Jenna's voice was soft, as Cook pulled out more papers from the box, along with two leather bound journals. Copies of visas, immigration paperwork, contracts for jobs done in Ireland. Anything that Melvin and Maureen had saved from their life in Ireland, all packed into one box.
"Yes, love?"
"Would you take Alicia's card and give her a call?" Jenna asked, keeping her eyes glued to the court documents that she still held on to. "No sense in waiting until tomorrow, is there?"
She didn't hear Rob respond, nor did she see Cook finish pulling everything out of the box and lay it on the table to be gone through. Jenna didn't hear Cook make a phone call, asking Bradley to return back to the Fitches house because he had to get home because of the twelve hour deadline and he wanted to make for sure there wouldn't be any trouble. She didn't even notice when Jamie came home talking about how he learnt the correct to pleasure a woman, receiving a slap upside his head from Rob and a deep throated chuckle from Cook. The only thing going through her mind as she shifted from document to document, was Naomi and Emily, and the fact that she came from a family of witches.
The guys decided that they would give Jenna some space, so Rob went to the Bristol gym and Cook said he would take Jamie to visit his sisters, leaving Jenna to wait, gratefully alone to give her time to prepare for what was to come.
Alicia and Sophia showed up forty minutes after Rob called them and Cook and Jamie left, with Jenna meeting them at the door before they even reached it, Alicia looking all flushed.
"Sorry, Jenna," Alicia stated breathlessly, "I didn't expect you to call so soon."
Jenna waved her explaination away and ushered them both into the house, offering tea and then getting down to business.
"So you've actually found it then?" Alicia asked Jenna as she looked up from the court papers and immigration documents that they had found and eyed the two journals that Jenna kept close to her.
"We did." Jenna stated simply, seeing a rush of emotion pass over Alicia's face. She became concerned. "Are you alright?"
Alicia took a moment to compose herself. "Ah, yes Jenna. I'm sorry, but...family has always been very important to us. As you can imagine, we were somewhat isolated as children because of the Craft, not saying that we didn't have friends, but...something happened to my aunts and uncles that made them cling to each other tighter, and us as well...and I'd wager it was Melvin leaving and then when my mother basically abandoning my sisters and I...," she trailed off as the implications of what Jenna had found hit her again.
Jenna looked to Sophia who could only shrug and shake her head, then she wrapped an arm around her mum's shoulder and sooth her as best as she could.
"I understand about family, Alicia." Jenna told her with a small smile. "And in the last few months, Naomi's become a part of my family, so I'm asking you...will this work?"
The question wasn't unusual. Actually, Alicia had been expecting it since first meeting Jenna earlier. She dried her tears and took a few deep breaths to control herself before answering.
"Yes, Jenna. This will work." Alicia told her. "If Emily falls in love with Naomi, she'll be able to break the curse."
Jenna nodded. "That's where we may have a bit of a problem." She responded, forlornly. "Emily's very resistant to the idea of love. She's always been a stubborn child and it's spilled over into this." Jenna stated, making a decision on how much to share with Alicia. "I'm not going to lie, Alicia...this is all a bit strange for me, and when Emily told me about the curse? Well, I'm sure you can imagine my dismay...I mean, what did I allow my daughters to step in to? But this whole thing with Mandy has made Emily just a bit...gun shy, if you will."
"But Mum said that Naomi is in love with Emily!" Sophia pointed out like a naïve idiot, feeling the urge to slap herself in the forehead.
Jenna laughed out loud at her words. "Anyone with eyes can see that, dear. But for Emily, it's not that easy. She likes to understand things, that's what makes her a good researcher, she likes to get to the truth of things, so she digs until she finds what she's looking for."
"So what are you saying?" Sophia asked, still not getting it.
"Emily's not just going to accept Naomi's love with being for sure of herself. And she won't just say she is unless it's true." Jenna explained the inner workings of her daughter to the younger woman, before turning back to Alicia, running her hands on the journals. "I haven't read these yet, merely browsed through them but...," Jenna stated and could see the disappointment cloud Alicia's eyes, "I thought you'd like to take them for your aunt to read."
Alicia felt her heart start beating faster as Jenna spoke. "Are you...s-sure? It's a lot to ask, Jenna. I mean, these are your grandparents?" She asked timidly, excited to be able to bring these words to Aunt Millie but not wanting Jenna to trust her blindly with what was basically the only things left of her grandparents.
"It makes me nervous, don't get me wrong," Jenna replied, "but from the sounds of it, your aunt deserves to know what happened to her brother, I think."
"Aunt Millie will want to meet you and your children," Alicia warned Jenna playfully, "like I said, she very big on family."
Jenna smiled back as she thought about what Naomi had told her the other day about inviting anyone she wanted to the party. "Then how about I invite you all to the ball Naomi is throwing for the girls' birthday, it's next week on the twenty-first at seven. Would you be able to attend?"
Alicia accepted the invitation, and smiled as Jenna handed over the journals, with a promise to take special care of them. Sophia led her out of the house shortly after that and they made their way home, leaving Jenna to hope that she did the right thing.
Emily snuggled close to Naomi, as they settled in with Effy and Katie and Cook and Jamie to watch a film. It had been great just to have a nice night in and when Cook showed up earlier with her brother, it was even better.
Keeping watch so Jamie didn't say anything inappropriate definitely distracted Emily. She had to stop counting the number of times she wanted to shout out that she was in love with Naomi throughout the day, and it was getting harder and harder to do when all Naomi had to do was simply look at her.
"Whatcha thinking about, Ems?"
Naomi leant over to whisper in her ear, causing a shudder to rip through Emily's body and she replied, "I love-," she caught herself and paused before adding the "you" onto that reply, "...that you don't mind my pervy brother hanging around." She finished slowly and tipped her head up to place a soft kiss on Naomi's lips.
"Aww, babes...," Naomi smiled at her, "I actually find him a delight to be around. Reminds me of Cook when we were younger. Besides, seeing him, having him here makes you happy, and I'm all about making you happy."
"Babes, that's the sweetest thing anyone's ever said to me," Emily mocked her playfully, "ya soppy git!"
"Quit your yapping up there, Ems!" Jamie called up to her from his seat four rows in front of them, where he was sitting with Cook. "The Edge of Tomorrow is about to start and you know hot Emily Blunt is in that get up! Jesus! Sisters are a pain in the ass sometimes!" He muttered to Cook, while the rest of them laughed.
As the movie started, Naomi leant over again to whisper in Emily's ear. "But I'm your soppy git, babes."
Emily smiled in the darkness and thought to herself, 'Yes, Naomi...you are mine, for better or for worse.' She swallowed thickly as a limp formed in her throat and snuggled back into the blonde, losing herself to her thoughts of a future without Naomi in it.
Thoughts? Words of wisdom? Loved it? Hated it? Let me know:D
