Denethor sat in the throne room moping as he usually did these days. There had been no sign of Boromir for nearly a year. He was beginning to lose hope that he would ever see his eldest son again. It looked like he would have to settle for Faramir to inherit the steward position.

Denethor looked up as the door slammed open. A guard came running in.

"My lord!" he said. "My lord, we have news of your son!"

"Boromir?" Denethor said jumping to his feet. "Where is he? Where is my son?"

"He has been seen entering the city", the guard said. "Your son brings others with him."

"Others?"

"Lord Boromir's company consists of a woman and an infant child."

Denethor looked puzzled. Who were those people Boromir was bringing? He waited in the throne room for Boromir.

Boromir brought his horse to the stables and helped Kyra and Vanim off. Kyra sighed as she looked toward the Citadel.

"I hope we're doing the right thing", she said.

"I believe we are", Boromir said. "I want my father to know I'm alive. I want him to stop hurting Faramir. And Vanim does deserve to know her grandfather."

"But does he deserve to know about her?"

Kyra looked at Vanim who sat in a pouch on Kyra's back. She looked at the Citadel with wide eyes having seen such a magnificent place for the first time in her life. Boromir stroked her cheek with her finger, making his daughter smile.

"My father should know he has a granddaughter", he said. "He may not have been the best father known to man, but he is still my father."

"I know", Kyra said. "I just don't want him to hurt Vanim."

Boromir kissed Kyra's forehead before taking her hand.

"I promise I will not let him hurt Vanim."

He held her hand as they walked through the city. Kyra felt uncomfortable as everyone in the city watched them. Boromir was back, but who was this woman who was with him? Why were they holding hands? Who was the child? Was it Boromir's by any chance?

"They're staring at us", Kyra whispered.

"Ignore them", Boromir whispered.

The three of them continued through the city. Guard standing at the entrance of the gate at the top level looked at them.

"Lord Boromir, you have returned!"

"Yes, I have", Boromir answered. "How is my father?"

"Lord Denethor has been worried about you. He has sent search parties all over Gondor trying to find you. Most of the people in the city feared you to be dead. Your father never gave up hope."

"And Faramir?" he asked. "How is my brother?"

"Not good, my lord", the guard said. "Your father hit him whenever the search parties failed to find you. He was convinced Lord Faramir had information about where you've gone. Lord Faramir has become…distant, my lord. He's not the happy young man he used to be."

Boromir nodded understandingly. The guards escorted Boromir and Kyra to the throne room where Denethor sat with his head down.

"My lord Denethor…"

Boromir gulped nervously as Denethor raise his eyes. Denethor gasped and smiled as tears came to his eyes.

"My son!" he tearfully said.

Denethor stood and slowly walked toward him. A smile formed on his face as he hugged Boromir tight.

"Boromir…my son! I knew you were alive. I knew you would come back."

"Yes, Father", Boromir said. "I am alive and I have returned."

Denethor turned his gaze to Kyra and Vanim.

"Who is this?" he asked, his voice filled with disgust.

"Father, this is Kyra", Boromir said. "She…she is my wife."

"Wife?"

He looked at Kyra looking about ready to attack. Boromir pulled Vanim out of the pouch on her back.

"This is Vanim", he said. "Father, meet your granddaughter."
