Boromir watched Denethor's expression as he showed Vanim to him. Denethor had mixed feelings. He was a grandfather now. Boromir was a father to this young child. This baby girl was his flesh and blood. Boromir had given him the girl that he had always wanted with Finduilas.
Denethor's feelings turned to anger. Boromir had run off and disappeared. He had wed a worthless low class girl. And now this child…the daughter of the low class girl.
"Get her…out of my sight", Boromir growled.
"Father", Boromir said shocked. "Will you hold your granddaughter?"
"I do not wish to see her."
Boromir handed Vanim to Kyra shocked over his father's behavior. He expected Denethor to be a little happier than this. He should be thankful Boromir had even come back at all.
"Where is Faramir?" Boromir asked.
"In his chambers probably", Denethor answered. "The boy has changed ever since you left."
Boromir rushed down the halls to see Faramir, leaving Kyra and Vanim to the mercy of Denethor. Kyra backed away slowly as she held her daughter to her chest.
"As for you", Denethor said threateningly.
"I mean no harm", she said, her voice quavering.
Boromir stood at Faramir's door. He wondered what he should say. How does one apologize for disappearing and leaving another to get beaten? Boromir opened the door and poked his head inside.
"Faramir?"
Boromir gasped as he saw his little brother. Faramir sat on his bed looking out the window. He was covered with bruises. His eyes were punched out into black eyes. His lip was split and swollen.
"Faramir", Boromir gasped. "Little brother."
Faramir turned to look at him. Boromir looked even more horrified. His eyes looked lifeless. There was no happiness at all in them.
"So you've returned", Faramir mumbled.
"Yes, I have", Boromir said. "Little brother…I'm so sorry."
"Sorry? For leaving me here? For running away and making yourself happy? Sorry isn't a strong enough word."
Faramir turned away refusing to talk. Boromir felt hurt. he tried to apologize as best as he could. What could he do to make it up to him? He knew he hurt Faramir for leaving him along with their father.
"Would you like to meet your niece?" Boromir asked
"Niece?" Faramir asked curiously.
"Kyra had our child", he said. "It's a girl."
Faramir looked down for a second before nodding. He got up and walked with Boromir to the throne room refusing to speak or look at him.
"Wait till you see her", Boromir said. "She's so beautiful as well as small."
He opened the door and gasped at the horror that awaited them. Vanim was on the floor screaming and crying as she watched Denethor beat Kyra mercilessly. Kyra laid on the floor unmoving.
