Chapter Thirty-Three: An End to Remember
This is it. The last chapter. I want to thank you guys for all of your support. I know I say it all the time, but I really mean it! Without you guys, I would've never gotten this far :)
Capitol, Undisclosed Location
A few hours later, the heliocopters were flying over a dark building near the center of the Capitol. The roof opened up and the cage was slowly lowered in to the building. The heliocopters flew away as the roof closed up, leaving their target in the dark.
Angel stood up and looked around. Still trapped in the cage, she was in a large empty room, the only light coming from a single lightbulb. She picked up her spear, which at the moment was a large hammer, and started swinging at the bars again. She did it for hours until she fell to her knees in exhaustion, gasping for breath. She hadn't even made the smallest dent. She attempted to burn the bars with her laser, but it simply bounced back. She stopped when she heard a door open.
It was President Bugs Bunny. He walked in to the room with four Peacekeepers: one in front, two beside him, and one more behind. He walked up to the cage, smiling evilly. "Well it looks like they've caught the apocalypse girl," he said darkly. Angel growled, then swung at the bars again. The President made no movement.
"What did you do with Tails?" she snapped, gripping the bars of the cage.
The President turned to the Peacekeepers, signalling that they could leave. When the door closed behind them he took out a carrot and knife and began peeling absentmindedly. "Yes, the young Miles Prower, is it?" he nodded to himself, a rhetorical question. "Victor from District Three. Made Lola commit suicide." He peeled a bit vigorously for a moment, then returned to the normal pace. "If you only knew the pain I was feeling," he said to his prisoner without looking up from the carrot.
"What are you implying?" Angel asked suspiciously.
The President smiled, then turned his back. "You'll see." He walked to the door and left, leaving Angel by herself again.
As soon as the door shut Angel activated her eye, turning on Skype. "I know what I have to do."
Capitol, Underground Prison
Tails groaned as he woke up. He opened his eyes to have a bright light from a small window above shine in his face. He was in an underground prison that appeared to be made of stone. There were metal braces around his wrists, hanging him from the wall at least ten feet from the wet cold floor. He saw that the other rebels were wakinig up as well, a few of them beside him, the others on the opposite wall.
"What…happened?" Robin groaned, still half asleep. "Where are we?"
"It looks like a prison," Zoey answered. "We need to get out of here. The fate of the country lies in our hands." She attempted to wriggle out of the cuffs, but they were too tight.
Noticing that his tails were still free, Tails attempted to move them, but they were still fast asleep. He couldn't even feel them at all.
Sonic looked down at the floor and saw that a large amount of water was starting to flow in to the prison through a hole. "Guys?" he said nervously. "We better get outta here fast!" He looked to the opposite wall to see Morgan fixing her hair with one hand, the cuffs still on the other. Joey happened to notice this as well.
"You've been free this whole time?!" he exclaimed. Morgan kicked him in the leg.
"Shush," she said. She took the bobby pin that she had been holding with her mouth and picked the lock. By the time she was free the water was already up to their chests. She dropped in to the water and began to free Tails and Joey.
"She's not gonna be able to free us in time!" Melaney exclaimed.
"She can't, but I can," Joey said. He reached in to his pocket and pulled out a Poke Ball. "Tyrannitar, let's go!" The large Pokemon popped out of the Poke Ball and in to the water. "Surf!" the fox commanded. The Pokemon formed a giant wave with its tail, hitting the rebels with enough force to rip them from their chains. They were all flushed out through the window above, just barely escaping.
"I…hate…water," Sonic rasped as he coughed up a mouthful.
Tails began to wring out his tails, cringing as the feeling came back to them. He began twirling them absentmindedly. "We need to keep moving," he said.
"But how?" Ash asked, wringing out his hat. He placed it back on his head. "This place is huge. We don't even have a clue to go on."
"We'll use your Pokemon," Zoey said. "Use the ones that can fly to scout the area. We'll use the others to fight." The Trainers took out the Poke Balls, then threw them in the air.
"Charizard, I choose you!" Ash yelled.
"Dragonite, let's go!" Iris shouted.
The two large Pokemon popped out of the Poke balls, flying in the air. "Go try to find Angel," Ash commanded. They both nodded, then flew away.
"I'll go get the Tornado," Tails said. He flew back to the entrance somewhat awkwardly since his tails were still half asleep.
"Should we go Super?" Sonic asked, a Chaos Emerald in hand. Shadow stopped him.
"It won't do us any good," he said. "With Tails and Angel gone, having only six emeralds won't be good enough."
"He's right," Zoey said. "We should wait until Charizard and Dragonite get back. Then we move." A few minutes later, Charizard came back. It nodded its head in the right direction.
"Thanks," Ash said to the Pokemon. The rebellion began running in that direction, following the Pokemon's lead.
Capitol Entrance
Tails landed on the soft earth of the forest outside the Capitol where he had left his plane. He jumped in to the pilot seat and took off in to the air. "I wonder if they've found her yet," Tails said, looking down over the Capitol. "I hope so…" his thoughts were interrupted when the video call started ringing. "You have one new voicemail." He turned and pressed a button. It was from Angel, who appeared to be locked in a cage. He watched the video closely.
"Listen, Tails," she spoke. "They've trapped me here and I'm not sure how long I have. But there's something I've been wanting to tell you…I was part of Team Plasma."
Capitol Center
Sonic and the others had finally arrived at the center of the Capitol, concealed by the shadows of the buildings. The area was crawling with Peacekeepers.
"Charizard, return," Ash whispered as the Pokemon was transported back in to its Poke Ball. Iris did the same thing with Dragonite. The rebels looked forward, a few yards away was a large stage used for public announcements. The stage had steps on both sides and velvet curtains. It matched the high class of the rest of the Capitol.
"Why are there so many Peacekeepers around here?" Duncan asked.
"There has to be a reason," Zoey answered. "They wouldn't all be here if there wasn't." She leaned up against the building as a Peacekeeper walked by. She took a step forward.
Then, all hell broke loose.
The Peacekeeper whipped around and began shooting at them, causing others to begin doing the same. The rebels ducked behind a building, but there were Peacekeepers everywhere they went.
"We need to go Super," Sonic said as multimple shots could be heard from all over. The Trainers were beginning to send out their Pokemon.
"It's impossible," Shadow replied. "We only have six-"
"We have to try," Sonic interrupted. He took out the red, blue, and green emeralds while Shadow took out the other three. The emeralds were glowing vibrantly. "Chaos Control!" The two shouted at the same time. They both began to glow in a yellow light, harnessing the power of the gems. They both became the same shade of yellow. The two hedgehogs flew in to the air, then came crashing down on the Peacekeepers and Steward-bots that were shooting at them. "Not bad," Sonic said.
Shadow nodded. "Angel and Tails must be in the area. It wouldn't have worked otherwise."
"Does that mean we're getting close?" Sonic asked.
Shadow only nodded again.
Capitol, In The Sky
Tails felt his body go numb. What did she mean by Team Plasma? The evil organization? She couldn't be. Not after all this time. He turned back to the screen as she explained everything; the clones, her powers, even how she got the Chaos Emerald. The message ended with the screen going black. Tails landed the plane near the center of the Capitol, still dizzy with shock. He jumped out and stood next to Super Sonic, who had just kicked down another Peacekeeper.
"Hey buddy," Sonic said as he punched down a Steward-bot. "Something bugging you?" he asked, noticing his uneasy mood.
"She was part of Team Plasma," Tails whispered. The rebels gasped and turned to him. Those who didn't know stood in confusion. Ash was one of the latter.
"Wait," Ash said. "Who do you mean by 'she'?" A missle from the Capitol was about to hit him, but Zoey grabbed his arm and yanked him out of the way just in time.
"We need a safer place to talk," she said. The rebels all ran in to one of the buildings, leavning the Pokemon outside to continue fighting.
"How did you find out?" Gwen asked Tails when they were all inside.
"She sent me a message," Tails answered. "Angel said-"
"Angel?!" Iris interrupted. "She was the one who destroyed our world? I can't believe that she was right under our noses this whole time!"
"I'm not helping someone who killed so many innocent people and Pokemon," Misty said, crossing her arms. Iris nodded in agreement.
"I would," Ash said strongly. The others turned to him in shock. "It's in the past, we can't change it. And even if we could, she's still one of us." He turned to look at Misty and Iris. "And if the positions were reversed, she'd help you guys." The two bowed their heads in shame, then agreed.
"So Tails-" Sonic bgan to say, but the fox had already disappeared from sight.
Tails hurried outside and away from the building. He watched Joey's Metagross use its psychich power to pick up Graveler and throw it at a group of Peacekeepers. The Fire-types were using their moves to attack a group of Steward-bots, melting them in to nothing. I don't care what she did…I'm still going to save her. The other rebels were starting to appear as well. The Trainers were giving their Pokemon commands while Super Sonic and Super Shadow took out more enemies. The others used brute force to take out Peacekeepers and Steward-bots one at a time.
"You go on ahead Tails," Sonic said as he punched out another Steward-bot. "We'll take it from here."
Tails nodded, then flew forward to the huge stage. There was no one on it at all. He was about to get on to it to look around, but was stopped when two Peacekeepers grabbed him. He tried to kick and thrash away, but they were too strong and managed to drag him on stage. Sonic happened to notice this.
"Tails!" he shouted. He began running towards them, but a large gate dropped in front of him before he could get there.
The President walked on stange, Dawson pushing a large machine behind him. The machine had a massive claw that came out of the base which crackled with small sparks of fire and electricity. "Hello, Tails," the President said darkly.
"What did you do with her?" he growled. The Peacekeepers tightened their grips while the President smiled evilly. He pressed a button on the machine, causing a trapdoor on the stage to open. A cage rose up through it, Angel inside. "Angel!" Tails exclaimed. The Peacekeepers pulled him back, preventing him from reaching her.
The President loooked at Tails. "Do you remember Lola?" he asked, a scowl on his face.
"Yeah," Tails said, trying to pull out of the Peacekeepers grasp again. "I owe her my life."
The President glared at him. "After she died, I had to deal with the fact she was gone. I figured that the best way to do that was to put you through the same pain." Tails gasped, then tried even harder to get away. "Unless," the President continued, "You would be willing to take her place." Angel's eyes widened, then she began shaking her head. Tails stood silent for a moment, then swallowed. He nodded.
"I'll do it."
"No!" Angel exclaimed. The President smiled deviously, then motioned for the Peacekeepers to bring him to the machine. The claw grasped his arms, body, and tails, keeping him from escaping.
Angel's eyes began to water as she desperately looked around for a way to escape. Then she noticed it: the key to the cage, which had been dropped on the ground. Making sure no one was watching, she reached out and tried to grab it. She could almost touch it.
Dawson pressed a few buttons on the machine as it began to heat up. The machine began to make whirring noises as Tails shut his eyes and waited.
Angel almost had her hands around the keys.
The President moved Dawson out of the way and pressed one final button, sending a blast of fire and electricity down the arm of the claw. Tails could feel the heat from the flames coming, but he was shoved out of the way…by Angel.
Tails tumbled across the stage and could only watch in horror as she was electrocuted and burned. He came to his senses and took out his bow, then shot the President. The President fell to the ground dead, letting go of the button that controlled the machine. The energy was cut off and the claw dropped her limp body on to the floor. Tails felt his heart sink as his eyes began to tear up. "No," he whispered.
Tails sprinted to her side and kneeled down beside her, holding her in his arms. He felt a lump forming in his throat. "Angel?" Please answer me…" he choked out. She opened her eyes slowly, just enough so he could see her blue irises. They were dull and lifeless, lacking the strength to go on. Tails felt his tears blur his vision as he realized what was happening. "I got your message," he sniffed.
Her voice was weak, but she managed to get the words out. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier," she sai in a barely audible whisper. "It was to protect you…I didn't want them to go after you too…" she coughed, barely able to breath. Tails could only watch, feeling helpless.
Tails felt as if something was squeezing his chest as a teardrop fell on her sweatshirt. He closed his eyes and shook his head. This had to be a dream, it just had to be. It couldn't be happening. He opened his eyes and looked at her. "It should've been me," he choaked. He started sobbing, but Angel stopped him.
"Shh…" she said calmly. "It's better this way." Tails started to protest, but she stopped him again. "Listen, Tails," she said weakly. "You have friends who care about you and need you. You still have your entire life ahead of you; more adventures to go on, more places to see…I'm really glad we had a chance to meet…it feels like my life has been worth living." She closed her eyes.
She was gone.
Tails buried his face in her shoulder and began to sob uncontrollably. He had never felt so sad and hopeless in his life…he was devastated. He would never be able to see her move again, never be able to hear her laugh, sing, or anything. He squeezed her hand, hoping for some kind of reply. No response. He continued to cry, letting his tears stain her sweatshirt. He stayed there for hours until the sun began to set over the horizon.
He sat up, even though he wanted to stay with her forever. He knew he couldn't. He leaned over and kissed her. For the first time he didn't get any reaction.
He wiped his eyes and stood up, then began walking away, back to the rebels. He stopped in midstep. He thought he had heard her move. He turned around, but it was just his imagination.
Then something happened. The Chaos Emeralds that Sonic and Shadow had been holding began to gravitate back to Angel, changing them back in to their regular forms. Her body began to glow in a soft white light. Tails turned around and stared in awe, then walked back over to her. The Choas Emerald on his arm was shining brighter and brighter with every step he took. He kneeled down and touched her hand, causing a blinding light to flash through the Capitol.
Tails opened his eyes when the light had receded. The six other emeralds were all on the floor, glowing softly. He squeezed her hand and to his surprise…it squeezed back.
Angel slowly opened her eyes and sat up. She looked at Tails. "Tails? Wait, what-" she was cut off when he tackled her to the ground and kissed her in relief. He got the icy reaction that he had been waiting for.
Capitol Entrance
The rebellion was outside the Capitol, ready to part ways.
"You're leaving us already?!" Tails asked in surprise. "But why?"
"I told you I've got business to do," Angel said. She kissed him on the cheek. "I'll be back though.
Zoey sighed in relief. They had stopped the Capitol, but she still had an empty feeling inside. Her thoughts were interrupted when a voice came from behind. "Zoey?" She turned around and gasped. The teenage boy had brown hair, jeans, and a blue T-shirt. He was smiling at her.
"Mike!" she exclaimed. She threw herself in to his arms. "I thought I lost you."
After a few minutes of goodbyes, the rebels began to leave one by one. Tails, Sonic, and Angel were the last three.
"Are you sure you have to leave?" Tails asked.
Angel nodded. "I'll be back, I swear." She turned to Sonic. "Take care of Tails, okay? And good luck with Amy."
Sonic made a face, then shrugged. "Whatever you say."
Angel smiled and hugged Tails. "See you guys later!" she flew off in to the sky, leaving the two behind.
Tails waved until she was out of sight. Sonic playfully elbowed him. "Race ya home!" he said with a grin. He began running towards the woods, catching Tails by surprise.
"Hey! Wait up!" Tails yelled. He chased after him, a happy feeling in his heart.
The rebellion had won.
