Chapter 13
Bella's POV
Night had fallen by the time Felix and I stopped talking about everything that happened yesterday and it helped. I'm still pissed as hell that my Dad has been having me followed, not to mention embarrassed, but I'm mostly pissed that he ended up having to give up on his principals just to keep me safe.
Would he even have had to do that if I'd been living with him from the start?
I don't know.
But what would happen if the FBI caught up to my Dad and Emmett? Would this...family even bother to look after them and myself or would they arrange for an 'accident' to happen to us? It was these thoughts that made me pace round and around the room that I had been in since late last night.
Knock, knock
"Come in," I replied to the knock on the door.
The door opened and both Emmett and our Dad walked in. Both looked as nervous as I felt.
"Hey, Bells." Emmett greeted me nervously.
Instead of smiling at his usual greeting to me, I took a deep breath and started saying what I needed to.
"I know that neither of you could have told me about your...employment," I began but not willing to say the word Mafia aloud. "that isn't what I'm upset about. I'm mad that it didn't even occur to you, Dad to just file for full custody of me when my life was threatened." I continued.
Dad bowed his head.
"Did you really think that Renee would be able to protect me?" I asked him in disbelief. "Hell, I'm not even 100% certain she'd even bother trying, she'd probably would have just thrown me at them as long she came out of it alive." I told them.
Emmett and our Dad cringed.
"Have you been having me followed since I came to Forks?" I asked after a moment or two of silence.
"NO!" They both shouted at once.
I looked at them through narrowed eyes.
"Really, not even when I went shopping yesterday?" I pushed.
"No, we didn't think there would be any need since you were here." Dad told me.
"Begs the same question then doesn't it. Why in the hell didn't you just ask me to move in with you when the threat had already been made?" I asked again
Dad looked at me pained.
"I thought you wouldn't want to and I didn't want you to hate me for forcing you to come with live with us." Dad told me sadly.
"Because I always hated visiting you in the past?" I asked rhetorically. Didn't they know me at all?
Neither of them knew what to say at my words and in truth neither did I. Luckily or unluckily depending on where you stand, there was a knock at the door.
"Dinner's ready Chief." Alec announced through the door.
Dad sagged into himself.
"We'll be right down." Dad replied.
I felt my body sag with exhaustion, and I knew that nothing would be completely resolved tonight. But I hoped more than anything in the world that it would, that the three of us would be okay again. I had only been one day and I was already sick to my stomach at the thought of us becoming strangers to each other. It was with an unspoken agreement that the three of us left the bedroom and headed to what would be the most awkward dinner in history. As far as the Swan family was concerned anyway.
Well, I had it right when I said dinner would be awkward. The only sounds that could be heard was that of the clattering of silver ware on plates and the sounds of people taking a drink of whatever was in front of them. But as I took each bite of my meal, I couldn't help but notice that Jasper was looking at Emmett rather cautiously.
Eventually the time came that I couldn't wonder anymore.
"Emmett," I began wearily.
The entire table stopped eating, lovely.
"Yeah, Bells." Emmett replied.
"Why does Jasper look as though he's on his way to the gallows?" I asked looking at Emmett through narrowed eyes. "You're not planning on killing him are you? Because I'm pretty sure that it's really lousy way to thank Mrs Cullen for dinner." I added.
Emmett looked at me shocked.
"What! No, I'm not killing Jasper." Emmett replied a little panicked before looking back to Jasper. "Although, I have to admit. You do look like you're about to go to the gallows bro." He added with concern.
Jasper snorted.
"That's only because I have no clue what screwed up shit you've got planned for Newton." Jasper threw back.
At his words, I became curious and Emmett merely became pissed off.
"Why are you planning to screw Mike Newton up?" I asked curiously.
Looks were exchanged and I felt annoyance bubble in my gut.
"Is this…family business or school business?" I asked, making sure I put emphasised the word 'family' in hopes they'd pick up what I meant.
They did.
Carlisle chuckled.
"It is most assuredly not family business." Carlisle told me with a small smile that didn't reach his eyes.
"So it's to do with school…" I said aloud, trying to figure what it could be. Until I remembered my first day of school that is.
"What. Did. He. Say." I demanded through clenched teeth.
"Let's just say that it made what he said your first day of school seem like a marriage proposal." Rosalie said, her own anger flashing dangerously in her eyes.
My eyes went from narrowed slits to being as wide as the dinner plates in front of us. Despite my mixed feelings over learning that Dad and Emmett are in the Mafia, I could safely say that Newton was royally fucked six ways from Sunday now.
"Don't do anything to him Emmett…" I began before he exploded, along with Edward, Jasper, Rosalie and Alice.
"Have you lost your mind?" Emmett demanded once the noise had eventually died down.
"Can I finish now?" I asked rhetorically. "As I was saying. Don't do anything to him, until" I added before I could be cut off again. "Rose, Alice and I have some fun with him. Then you can do whatever your devious mind desires, legally." I told him.
At the mention of Rose, Alice and I messing with Newton, my brother and our friends looked as though they'd just been told Christmas morning was going to happen six days in a row.
"What are you thinking?" Rose asked gleefully.
"Not sure yet, but we are not going to do anything just yet." I answered.
"Whoa…why not?" Emmett whined.
I looked at him with fake surprise.
"Emmett, you're a member of a crime family. Surely even you know that just revenge is a dish best served cold." I replied innocently.
My words shocked everyone, in truth I'm a little shocked myself. I never expected to bring up the secret family profession up so quickly in such a blasé manner. It seems humiliating Newton can make a girl put just about anything on the back burner. It wasn't long though before Emmett was pouting.
"Why is my Monkey man pouting?" Rose asked sweetly.
Gross.
"I wanted to pound Newton's face in." Emmett said pouting like a two year old.
"Emmett, your sister and I both said it has to be legal pay back." Dad scolded him sternly.
"B-but…I had it all planned!" Emmett replied.
I sighed, I know my brother well and no matter what we say, he'll do something to Newton at some point.
"Fine. You get…two acts of torment but they have to be the least harmful to him. Physically speaking, humiliate his ass all you want." I gave in.
"YES!" Emmett yelled joyfully.
The table laughed at Emmett's joy and I almost felt sorry for Newton. Almost.
Though the rest of dinner was a more relaxed affair, I knew there was still a lot I had to sort through. But I also know that school tomorrow was going to be very interesting.
A/N: There you go, I had originally intended for this chapter to be longer but found it was best to just put what's coming next into a separate chapter. Next being the first stages of Newton's torment.
More to come soon, if anyone has any hysterical ideas on how to make Newton and even his friends suffer please don't hesitate to let me know. Credit will be at the beginning of the chapter.
