Chapter 19: The City Beneath

Blue.

Blue engulfed Souta and myself. There was nothing but my brother, myself, and the blue light.

"Where are we?" Souta asked out.

"Entering your birth city. The well has allowed you passage into Shikon Village or... The Death Valley now. I must warn you, the city is in ruins. After your father and myself died it destroyed the Village and left the survivors with nothing. The survivors of the village have rebuilt what the could and humans and demons alike have survived." My mothers figure appeared before us.

"Is that all we should know?" I felt like she was keeping something from us, something important.

"Yes. I cannot fool you, Kagome, for you are in fact your father's daughter..." I stared into her eyes, waiting for her to tell us the truth.

"Well?"

"Kagome, you only have half of the jewel inside you..." She whispered.

"Then who has the other-" I stopped and turned to my brother. "No..."

"It's inside of... me?" Souta questioned our mother.

"I'm so sorry, my son." Midoriko began to fade away. "Be cautious, the survivors will stop at nothing to steal the jewel from your bellies!"

And just like that our mother was gone again. We were left with nothing but silence, that was until I heard a noise. It was our feet finally hitting the ground.

"We're here.." Souta began climbing out of the well and I followed swiftly behind him.

He helped me over the lip of the well and we gazed at the new world we had arrived in. It was horrific. Dead animals lined the field, the trees were wilting and crumbling, the makeshift sky was smog-filled and the small lake beside us was murky. The land reeked of death.

"No wonder they call it Death Valley.. this place sucks!"

"Souta! This place is like this because our mother is an idiot! Now get a move on! We have to find the village." I shoved Souta onto the path through the dead trees.

"These trees are creepy.." Souta shuddered.

"Get over it, loser."

The path was lengthy and tree branches jutted out from the ground beneath our feet. After an hour of walking, we managed to find a worn down village. We peered through the trees to get a good look at the sight before us. We could see many unhealthy people roaming the streets but one stuck out. It was a tall orange-headed man with a long ponytail staring straight at us.

"A fox demon.." Souta whispered to me.

The demon must have heard us because he nodded and motioned us forward. After moments of contemplation Souta and I decided to just go see the fox guy.

"Yolo, we're goin." Souta grabbed my arm and led me over the the fox.

"Hello Kagome" The fox looked at me, then to my brother, "Souta."

"How do you know us?" Souta questioned.

"My family has known yours for many centuries, Souta. The Higurashi family and the Hibuki family have always been allies." The fox told us, "I am Shippo, by the way. (Adult/Grownup Shippo!) Your mother left a message to my family that in 500 years time, her children would return to this... dreadful mess of a village. Come! Follow me to my hut."

We followed closely behind the fox until we reached the hut. He ushered us inside and sat down on the floor.

"Sit." We sat as he told us to.

"I suppose you know why we've come, Shippo?" I asked the man.

"Of course, I've awaited your arrival all year! You've come to learn the spell to remove the jewel and then the spells that will help free your parents!"

"Yes, and you know these spells?"

"Well no. I'm a fox, we don't use spells."

"Then what the fu-" I quickly placed my hand over Souta's loud mouth.

"I do however, have the scrolls that will assist you." the fox fished out said scrolls and gave them over to me.

"Thank you so much! How do we train for the spell? Do we stay here or do we leave? I have so many questio-" Shippo flicked my nose.

"Hush, Kagome, you're acting crazy. You must travel to the tomb of your mother and father. It is there that you will receive the powers they left behind for you. Then.. you must quickly make your ay back to the well and go home. i will assist you on this journey."

Souta and I nodded in understanding.

"My nose hurts." I pouted.

We had to leave before sunrise. Demons lurked at all hours and we couldn't risk being seen. Shippo led us through the forest for a couple of hours and the sun had just reached the top of the sky.

"There is a stream over there." Shippo pointed to our left. "Get a drink and wash up. It's good water."

Souta and I made our way through the disgusting foliage til we reached the stream. But just when we thought we were going to catch a break.

"HMMM? DO I SMELL SHIKON FLESH!?" I giant snake demon with one eye busted through the trees.

"Uhhhh.. Noooo? " Souta almost pissed his pants.

The demon chuckled darkly and lunged its scaly body at us. Souta and I rolled out of the way just in time for the demon to launch a second attack. I could see Souta use his spiritual energy to form a light green spear. (BTW Light green is the color of Souta's spiritual energy, and light aqua colored blue is kagomes!) Just as the demon launched at me, Souta stabbed his spear through the snakes tail, leaving it pinned to the floor.

"WHY YOU LITTLE FUCKER!" The snake screeched at Souta.

I used this as an opportunity to form a light blue bow and arrow with my powers and send it flying into the demon snakes eye.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" The demon bellowed as it disintegrated.

Souta stood up, dusting himself off, "Well, this calls for some water."

"Can't say I disagree."

"Oh man!"

"What is it?"

"Snake blood in the stream water!"

"FML!"

For what seemed like days we continued on our journey to the tomb. We were nonstop having to fight demons.

"This is getting fucking ridiculous!" Souta threw his hands up in frustration as we finished off a Scorpion demon.

"Relax, the tomb is just inside this cave." Shippo pointed tho the cave just meters ahead of us.

As we reached the cave Shippo began to relax along the rocky walls. "I cannot enter, because I am a demon. You two must travel alone. I will await your return."

"See you in a few!" I hollered to Shippo as we made our way into the depths of the cave.

Souta and I used our spiritual powers to illuminate the cave. For five minutes we saw nothing but empty space ahead of us until we say something shining.

"What s that?" Souta asked as we broke into a run for the sparkling object.

"It's.. their bodies."
