Chapter 22: Like Sand Through the Hourglass

Months had gone by. It was already may and this was our last week of school. It was nearing the three year anniversary of my mom and grampa's death. Souta and I had bonded immensely during our training sessions. We had gotten extremely close to figuring out how to free our mother and father from the depths of the jewel. I kept the Shikon no Tama on a necklace around my neck. It was always glowing a beautiful shade of pink and it often times soothed Souta and i when we were stressed. Our mother was constantly nagging me about her freedom and us taking to long on releasing her. I just shushed her and went about my training and research.

Kina had come by to see me more than a few times. I missed that little girl so much. I knew I did the right thing by giving her back to Ayame but it still hurt my heart. She was like my daughter and it sucked watching her be with someone else instead of me. She had turned five in the passing months and I bought her a barbie dreamhouse. Souta decided to dress up like Captain America and was the birthday superhero who gave all the kids piggy back rides around the backyard. My, how time flies.

My thoughts were interrupted when my mother appeared before me.

"Kagome." She said my name angrily.

"I'm busy." I told her, clearly annoyed.

"Do you wish to know why you haven't been able to free us yet?" She bit out.

"That would make things a hell of a lot easier!"

"You are not strong enough."

"I've been working on my strength all the time! What more does it-" My mother cut me off sharply.

"Not that kind of strength! You aren't emotionally strong! You can't handle it!" She yelled at me.

"Well what do you want me to do?!" I stood up and got in my mothers face.

"You have to be able to kill anybody without remorse, and you are not ready for that. " She told me.

"I'm not a killer!"

"You are going to have to kill the demon of the Shikon to free me! If you cannot kill on command, then you will not be able to slay the demon! "

"Then maybe I'll just leave you to rot in the damn jewel!" I screamed into my mothers face.

"Is that really how you want to do this, Kagome?" She threatened me.

"What are you gonna do?" I seriously regretted that question.

Her eyes darted to someone behind me. Inuyasha. My mother sent an energy blast at him and it took him down instantly.

"NO!" I tried to run for Inuyasha but my mother had frozen my body!

She picked up his limp body and held him up in front of me.

"STOP THIS!" I screamed at her, tears spilling from my reddened eyes.

"Kill him." She told me.

I was silent. How could she ask me to kill my boyfriend? Someone I cared about! What the fuck was wrong with this crazy woman? If I could have moved I would have lopped her fucking head off!

"Kill him or else I'll just attack more people you care about. I mean there's Kina..." She threatened.

"No!" I gasped out.

"ooooh, and what about Souta!" She smiled evilly.

"NO! Please not Souta!" I cried out.

"Then kill him, and pledge your loyalty to me." You bit out.

"I CAN'T!" I screamed.

And right before my eyes my mother snapped Inuyashas neck. He fell to the floor with empty eyes, blood spilling from his mouth still. I began to cry and scream uncontrollably. And then the a thought worse than what just happened came. My mother was going to go after Souta next!

"NO! PLEASE DON'T HURT SOUTA!"

But she was already gone. She was going to possibly kill my little brother! The worst thing was that I knew there was nothing I could do to stop her.

I sprinted all the way to my apartment. My mother took Inuyashas body with her, which further upset me. I would never see him again and now I couldn't even have a damn funeral! But all those thoughts washed away when I saw that our apartment door was wide open.

"SOUTA!" I yelled as I ran into the apartment.

"Kagome, what's going on?" Souta appeared out of the kitchen, a worried look on his face.

"Oh thank god!" I wrapped my arms around my brother, " I thought she killed you!"

I looked into his brown eyes an smiled, "I'm alright Kags," Souta smiled evilly, "But you're not." His eyes turned black and he pulled a knife from his sleeve and tried to slice my stomach.

"No! She already got you... I was too late!" I started crying.

I tried to steal the knife from him but he sliced my hand open and right as he sliced our mother released him just long enough for him to see what he did.

"Kagome!" He screamed in sorrow, but that sorrow was quickly replaced with malice once again.

I knew I couldn't fight him so I made a break to the front door and left. As I was running I looked back to see Souta standing in the doorway, crying. He was trying to reach for me but our mother dragged him back inside and slammed the door. I looked away. She possessed Souta and he freed her from the jewel already. How did I not notice her spirit leaving the jewel?

I knew I had to release my father. He was the only one that could help. He killed her once and he could sure as hell do it again.

'Father!' I called to him through the jewel.

'Yes.' He responded!

'Father I need your help! How do I free you?! Mother is killing everyone! She possessed Souta to free her from the jewel and is using him against me!' I cried out to him.

'Go into the woods next to you.'

I did as he instructed and went into the woods. 'What now?'

'Make a fire.'

I quickly made a small fire and lit it with a spark of my spiritual energy.

'Now sit down, and focus on finding me in the jewel. Once you find me, imagine that you're pulling me out and chant RELEASE MAGATSUHI until I appear in front of you.'

I did as my father instructed. I focused on the jewel and all the beings within it for maybe an hour before a certain purple haired demon appeared in the blackness.

'Good, Kagome! You've spotted me. Now chant!'

"RELEASE MAGATSUHI. RELEASE MAGATSUHI. RELEASE MAGATSUHI. RELEASE MAGATSUHI. RELEASE MAGATSUHI. RELEASE MAGATSUHI-" A flash of light in the fire made my words cut short.

In the middle of what was once a fire, stood my father. He was very tall and very intimidating. I stared up at him until he reached a hand out to me. I took his hand and he pulled me up into a standing position.

"Well done, Kagome." He began, "Now let's go kill your mother."
