It was the middle of the night and I was jarred awake by Sarah coming into the room. She closes the door quietly, not to disturb me. She sits on the end of the bed and I can see her debating on whether or not to wake me up.
"Sarah?" I ask, tiredly. "What are you doing in here?"
She looks over at me, surprised that I'm already awake.
"I came in here to talk to you before your aunt and uncle get home. I need to ask you something," Sarah explains.
"Okay?" I ask, wary. "What?"
She takes a deep breath. "Is Jesse back in town?"
"Who?" I play dumb.
"My scummy ex-boyfriend."
"Oh. And this is relevant because?"
She sighs deeply, apparently frustrated.
"Look, I know that you're a Seer," Sarah explains. "I overheard you and Ethan talking in earlier. I was just thinking that if Jesse was lurking around, you'd get a vision, because I heard you say that you don't need to touch a supernatural being to get a read on them. You just have to be in the presence of one."
"I'm sorry. No, I haven't gotten a vision since I left for the summer. And even if I did, how would I know what he looks like? I've never seen him."
I knew that it was wrong to lie, but I had to do it to protect everyone. Now I knew why Jesse made me promise not to tell anyone, especially Sarah. They had dated and now she hated him with a passion. Probably had to do with either the box thing he was holding in my vision or because he bit Ethan.
"Wait," I pause. If I was going to act stupid, now was the time. "Supernatural being? What is he?"
"Kate, do you believe in vampires?" Sarah asks seriously.
"Your ex-boyfriend is a vampire?" I exclaim, excitedly. "That's awesome! Where can I get one?"
"Kate, I…" Sarah tries to get out, but I interrupt her.
"Do you think Dusk is real?" I ask straight-faced. It was better to act like a teenager that swoons over vampires and take it as a joke, rather than actually telling the truth. Mostly I just added in the Dusk part to get a rise out of her. She liked my cousin and she needed to prove to me that she was good enough for him.
I almost start busting out laughing at the expression on Sarah's face. It was a cross between "Is she serious?" and "Great, another Dusker."
"Kate, I am being serious," Sarah explains. "Vampires are real. And my ex-boyfriend is one. And he's evil."
"Does Ethan know you're telling me this?"
By then I could see her getting fed up with me. She takes a deep breath and tries to calm herself and slowly walks to the door. She turns around to look at me once more.
"Goodnight, Kate," Sarah says half-heartedly and closes the door behind her.
She was frustrated with me, and for some reason, I found it hilarious. I knew she was trying to be serious with me, and when I was being silly and acting dumb about it, she was trying to fight the urge not to rip my head off.
I wasn't dumb about supernatural beings, vampires especially. I knew that Sarah, Erica and Rory were vampires.
Let me explain something. I do get visions when I'm in the presence of a supernatural being, but the supernatural being has to have a hidden agenda, or I'm just meeting it for the first time for my psychic energy to pick up on it. That's why I didn't get a vision when I walked into the house with two vampires on the couch, or when Sarah came into my room.
The door cracked open, and Ethan's head peeked in. He was trying to see if I was awake.
"What?" I asked, annoyed.
"What did you say to Sarah? She seemed angry and upset," Ethan explained.
Time to play dumb again. "She told me she liked you, and I told her that she wasn't good enough for you."
"You what?!" Ethan asked, starting to get mad.
"Dude, chill. I was kidding." I explain, starting to smile. Ethan, however, did not find it funny.
"Anyway," Ethan started. "What did you really talk about?"
I looked at my cousin, debating on whether to tell him the truth or not.
"Dusk," I say, deciding to tell part of the truth.
"Dusk?" he asked skeptically.
"Yup."
"Why would that upset her?"
"Probably because it reminds her of Jesse."
He just looks at me dumbfounded. Waiting for me to explain.
"I know what happened at the Dusk Advanced Screening last fall. Grandma Morgan told me all about Reverend Black's Army and how his flock of 219 vampires were burned in the church in 1809 and he wanted to take back the town by resurrecting his followers with Dusker souls. I now understand why Jesse wants to kill you. You made him miss his target and you stole his girlfriend." I said, matter-of-factly.
"How do you know all this? Are you clairvoyant as well?" Ethan asked, amazed.
"Well, I knew that Whitechapel was a bed for paranormal activity, so I did my homework."
"How did you know Jesse was Reverend Black?"
"Easy. I had a vision when I met him. He was holding a box that was capturing the Dusker souls and Grandma had also told me about the Cubile Animus. Latin for 'nest of souls' and that's what he was using to transfer the souls during the eclipse that night."
It was quiet for a minute, while he took this all in. Finally he looked up at me.
"I was surprised you knew all of that," he said.
"Ethan Morgan, I am quite offended that you think I know so little about this town," I say, with mock offence in my voice. "I was born here, and who doesn't take an interest in their birthplace? We only moved because of my dad's job."
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
"Oh, you know I am," I say, teasing.
"I did not steal Sarah away from Jesse. She broke up with him and she's not my girlfriend," he says, trying so hard not to show that he likes her.
"Ethan, Ethan, Ethan," I scold. "It's so obvious you two like each other. Stop playing around and tell her how you feel!"
"How do you know she likes me?"
"Not only can I read the supernatural, but I can also read normal people…Well, I guess you two wouldn't exactly be normal people since you're a Seer and she's a vampire…" I trail off.
Before Ethan can say anything, Rory comes bounding into the room.
"Luke," he says, trying imitate Darth Vader. "I am your father."
"Rory, shut up!" I holler.
Rory looks at me. "The movie was over, and me, Ethan and Benny got bored, so we decided to…"
"Act like you were Darth Vader, Ethan was Luke Skywalker and Benny was Han Solo?" I asked, not amused.
"Yeah. Wanna be Princess Leia?" Rory asks.
"Ha-ha. No," I reply.
"You underestimate my power…" Rory says.
"Oh, My God! You guys are such geeks!" I complain falling back onto my pillow.
Then Benny comes bursting into my room, unannounced. At this point, I'm getting annoyed with the three geeks in my room.
"Have you ever heard of knocking?" I ask annoyed. The three look at me like they've done nothing wrong. "In other words, get out!" I point to the nearest exit.
The boys slowly shuffle out of the room closing the door. Ethan was like a brother to me, but he also got on my nerves sometimes.
I pull the covers back over me and drift off into a dreamless sleep.
