I wake up on a couch in a lavish living room. There's a big flat screen TV on one wall and the couch I'm laying on is no doubt genuine leather. I was in Jesse's mansion.
I slowly sit up, sore. I take out my phone that was in my pocket and check the time. 8:30 PM. I vaguely remember getting home from the mall around noon, and I guess being taken away by Jesse around 12:30. No wonder I was so stiff. I'd been knocked out for eight hours.
I get up and walk around, trying to walk off the stiffness in my joints. I walk over to the window that overlooks the pool. I didn't think vampires liked to swim. I guess it was just for looks. I shrug and keep walking around the room looking at the paintings that hung on the wall. I wonder how long it had taken him to build up his collection. He'd been around for over two hundred years.
"Good, you're awake," Jesse says, coming up behind me.
"Yeah," I say. "I woke up about five minutes ago."
I don't know why, but I felt uneasy. Being alone with Jesse in his house was unsettling.
"Do you have a bathroom?" I ask, turning around to face Jesse.
"Yeah," he replies. "Just take a left out of the living room and it'll be the second door on the left."
"Thank you," I say, ducking out of the room.
Going away with Jesse was beginning to seem like a really bad idea. I had to get in contact with Ethan. He'd be able to get me out of this.
I find the bathroom and lock the door as soon as I go in. I dig out my phone to call Ethan. I run the water in the sink so Jesse can't hear me.
Ring. Ring. Ring.
"C'mon Ethan, pick up!" I whisper
"Hello?" Ethan answers.
"Oh, thank God," I sigh in relief. "Ethan, listen. I need you to come get me."
"Where are you? I thought you'd be home by now," Ethan says.
"Well, not really…" I trail off. "I'm sorta, kinda at Jesse's mansion…"
"What? How'd you get there?"
"Well…after I got back from the mall with your mom and sister, I figured I could just go home and leave Whitechapel and all my problems behind," I confess.
"I found your note," he says. "I also found your packed duffel bag."
"Anyway, he caught me trying to leave the house, and threatened to kill you, if I didn't invite him in."
"You invited him in?"
"Yes," I admitted. "I'm sorry. He knocked me out and dragged me here."
"He kidnapped you?" Ethan asked, getting mad.
"I don't think it's technically kidnapping if you go willingly…the point is, please come get me. I will explain everything later."
"Okay, we'll be there in ten minutes."
"And Ethan?"
"Yeah?"
"Hurry."
"I will," he says, and hangs up.
I had about ten minutes until my saviors arrived. How was I going to distract Jesse for that long? All I could hope for was that he wouldn't try to turn me before then.
I walk out of the bathroom, back to the living room, where Jesse is sitting on the couch.
He looked up when I came in. "Are you okay? You were in there for a while."
"I ate at the food court for lunch today, and I guess the grease upset my stomach," I lie.
He pats the space beside him on the couch, telling me to come sit. I walk over slowly, trying to think of how to delay him on turning me, if he was even planning to do it tonight. I sit down beside him, as far away as the couch would allow. He scoots over toward me, close enough that our arms touch.
"Why so distant?" Jesse asks.
"Because," I sigh.
"Because what?"
"You never asked me if I wanted to be a vampire. You just assumed."
"You said you liked vampires."
"You also assumed that too! Let's get one thing straight, I am not going to be your little puppet, just so you can torment my cousin. And if you think I'm going anywhere with you, forget it."
I could tell that he was beginning to get angry. I had a feeling that he had a short fuse when things didn't go the way he wanted.
He gets up and puts his hands on both sides of the couch and leans into me. Close enough that I can smell his breath.
"You'll do what I tell you, or else I kill your dorky cousin," Jesse threatens. "Starting with letting me turn you."
"I don't think-" I try to say, but he gives me a look that makes me go silent.
Jesse tips my head back, exposing my neck. And leans in closer.
"Hey!" someone yells behind him. "Let her go!"
I sigh in relief. Ethan.
Jesse slowly stands up and turns around to face Ethan.
"Surprise, surprise. The dork squad is here," Jesse says, not amused.
"You knew we were coming?" Ethan asks.
"Of course. I heard her on the phone," Jesse says, pointing towards me.
Oops. Caught again.
"I had to," I defend. "I didn't want to be a vampire. And I sure don't wanna be your vampire puppet, slash sometimes girlfriend."
Jesse smiles. "We'll see."
He grabs my arm and flies upstairs and throws me into a room. "I'll be back," he threatens. He locks the door when he leaves.
I get up and look out the window. It was a two-story drop. I could possibly scale the building and maybe survive with a broken arm at the least.
I climb out the window and hang onto the ledge, gathering enough courage to let go. Swallowing hard, I let go and fall the two stories to the ground. I land on my elbows and an instant pain flashes through my arm. I think I broke it.
I get off the ground and spot Sarah's car in the driveway. I walk quickly towards it and open the door. I hide in the backseat and wait for them to get back.
A few minutes later, Sarah climbs into the driver's seat, Ethan sits in the passenger seat and Benny slides into the backseat. Benny is surprised to see me and I a put my finger up to my mouth, telling him not to say anything.
Sarah pulls out and starts driving away. Sarah and Ethan both have grim expressions on their faces, while Benny is smirking.
Sarah looks in the rearview mirror at Benny. "What's wrong with you?"
"Maybe we didn't fail Kate like we thought," Benny explains, looking at me. Motioning with his hand for me to get up.
"My cousin is no doubt a vampire by now," Ethan sighs.
"Hey guys," I say, as I pop up beside Benny in the backseat.
"How did you…?" Ethan trails off.
"Get out of the house without Jesse catching me?"
Ethan nods, speechless.
"I snuck out the window," I admit.
"How? It's a two-story drop," Sarah asks. "You're not a fledgling, are you?"
"Nope," I assure them. "Still human."
There are sighs of relief from everyone in the car.
"Which reminds me…I think I broke my arm…" I confess. "When I sort of dropped, slash fell, from the window…"
"I think Grandma has a healing spell…" Benny trails off, looking at me. "Does she know that I'm a Spell Master?"
"Yes," I assure him. "I know that you're a Spell Master. I also know that Sarah, Erica and Rory are vampires and that Ethan is a Seer."
"How did you know all of that?" Benny asks.
"Because, I'm a Seer too," I explain. "Except, I'm omniscient as well. Which means 'all knowing,' and it explains why I don't have to touch a supernatural being to get a read on them. That's how I knew all about Whitechapel and Jesse. Grandma Morgan didn't tell me, it just came to me when I got here."
"So, is your psychic energy stronger than mine?" Ethan asked.
"Probably."
Ethan nods, taking it all in.
"I also have apologize to everyone," I say. "Sarah, I'm sorry I acted stupid when you asked me about Jesse. The truth is, I did see him when I was coming home from the movies last night. Ethan, I'm sorry for keeping all of this from you. I was trying to protect both of you. Jesse said he'd kill me if I told any of you. Benny, I'm sorry I kept wigging out on you. All the stress was getting to me."
They all accept my apologies and it's quiet for a minute. Benny leans over and gives me a hug. I lean on him for support. I was so exhausted. He leans back on the seat and my head is on his chest. He puts his arms around me as I drift off to sleep.
