Chapter 22: Dirty Deeds
EPOV
We all sit around the dining room table as I explain to, not only Mr. Jenks, but the two detectives that had arrived a few minutes ago, everything that happened today. They are extremely impressed that we were able to capture the whole conversation on video. This coupled with the video clips that the reporters were able to capture, reinforces the charges that will be brought against Eleazar.
Alice is in the process of burning the detectives a copy of the video. Since the good mayor still has his hands in the police department, we want to make sure we keep a copy for ourselves. Alice had come home from work soon after Eleazar left and could barely make it into the driveway from all the reporters. Emmett actually had to go out and help her inside to ensure that she didn't get pushed around or hurt.
"Well, Mr. Cullen, Mr. Jenks, I believe you have enough evidence to, not only file harassment charges against Mayor Denali, but also reopen the criminal charges you originally filed against Tanya Denali. Since the case was dismissed and never went to trial, you are able to re-file criminal charges against her. Double jeopardy does not qualify in this instance. I would suggest you act quickly," one of the detective tells us, frowning at the notepad he was using to write in. "You should also request an additional order of protection against Mayor Denali."
"Yes, Sir," I reply, looking over to Mr. Jenks who nods in understanding to me.
"To be honest, if I were you, I'd contact the state police to work through these charges. You don't really know how far his power reaches within the Seattle Police Department. If you contact the state courts, I believe that would be your best bet to ensure that the Mayor isn't able to weasel his way out of the charges against him and his daughter."
"We will be contacting them immediately," Mr. Jenks responds. "This family has been through enough, this needs to be taken care of, once and for all."
"Thanks gentlemen for coming out," my father says, leading them to the door.
"Well, there goes our plans," Jasper whines with a pout.
"Oh, no you don't. Those were your plans," I declare, laughing as Alice narrows her eyes at him.
"Edward, I want to contact the state police immediately. Excuse me," Mr. Jenks says getting up with his phone, already dialing and heads into the kitchen.
As soon as he is out of earshot Alice is asking her husband, "Ok, what are these plans of yours, mister?"
"I was just thinking that maybe we could load everything up in a U-Haul and take Mom's suburban. Maybe make a road trip out of getting to Texas once you and Rosalie are finished with work. Mom and Dad can move into a hotel until they close on the house, and then fly out," he explains to her with a grimace on his face.
"Oh really, and when were you going to share this plan with the rest of us?" she asks with anger in her voice.
"Sorry, Babe. I was going to discuss it with everyone tomorrow night when Rose gets home, and I did a little more research," he explains through her pouting.
Oh, he is good. Look at him using the puppy eyes to get out of trouble with his wife.
"Well, I think we should wait and see what Jason finds out first, before we make any plans," my dad states, cutting off their argument before it even begins.
Mr. Jenks is in the kitchen speaking with my parents, while the rest of us are sitting around the living room. We're waiting for the state police detective to arrive. We have been told that one is on his way over, per Mr. Jenks.
I still cannot believe that Eleazar thought that he could come to my home and threaten me and my family. Let alone in broad daylight, and to do it in public. I'm just dumbfounded. I'm brought out of my thoughts by Emmett's singing.
"I lead a life of crime. Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap. Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap. Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap. If you're havin' trouble with your life of love, you got a broken heart. He's double dealin' with your best friend, that's when the teardrops start. Fella, pick up the phone. I'm here alone. Just make a social call. Come right in. Forget about him. We'll have ourselves a ball. Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap."
"Emmett, if you don't shut the hell up, I'm going to call Rose and tell her you broke her car or something," Alice growls at him, while Jasper and I crack the fuck up. "You guys are so immature; and you want Rose and me to go on a road trip with you?"
Soon, there's a knock on the door. I get up and follow behind my father, as he goes to answer it. He leads two gentlemen in who are wearing badges and suits.
"Detectives, this is my son, Edward, and his attorney, Mr. Jenks," he introduces us to the two men.
Just as I'm about to shake both of their hands, we all hear Emmett belt out, "Bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?"
"Oh my word. Who are you, and where did you come from?" my mother asks, completely embarrassed. "I am so sorry, Gentlemen. Sometimes my children lose their manners."
Jasper and I start laughing so hard, I have to sit back down. Alice has tears in her eyes from trying not to laugh. Even my father's and Mr. Jenks' shoulders are shaking as they try to contain their amusement.
"Follow me, please, while all the children find their composure," she states, glaring at us, as she leads them into the dining room.
"Did you see their faces?" Emmett asks, amused by his own antics. "That was some priceless shit, right there."
"Man, you better chill. You're going to piss mom off if you don't," Jasper counters, when he was finally able to speak.
"Come on, let's get this over with. We don't want to keep them waiting," my father asserts, leading the rest of us into the dining room.
We all sit down as my father apologizes once again for our behavior, while my mother is getting them something to drink.
"It's fine. It's not like we haven't heard it before. Although, it's usually from someone who is either high or highly intoxicated. We still have a sense of humor," the older detective responds, laughing.
"Well, I already introduced Edward and his attorney, Mr. Jenks. This is my wife, Esme, my other sons, Jasper and Emmett, my daughter in-law Alice and I'm Carlisle," my father announces to them, leaning over the table to shake their hands.
"It's nice to meet you all. This is my partner, Detective Danny Fuller, and I'm Detective Mark Seeley," the older man introduces, shaking everyone's hand.
"In order to get this ball rolling, we'd like for you to start from the very beginning. I need the entire story and don't leave anything out," he explains to me as he sits a recorder on the table. "I'm going to record this so that there are no questions as to what is said or asked. Is everyone ok with this?"
We all answer in the positive, as Mr. Jenks goes on to explain the whole situation. He starts off by relaying how Tanya and I met, leading up to our engagement. He goes further on about how I was contacted by the bank regarding the depleting funds and how I confronted her. He explains how we filed criminal charges, the continuous harassment and slandering from her and her father. He went into detail about how they dismissed the court case and finally the stalking and being threatened from Eleazar. My family and I would fill in additional information or explain something in more detail, when needed.
Detective Seeley reaches over, and turns off the recorder once we are finished. He sits back in his chair, and rubs the back of his neck. "Ok, so let me get this straight. You have evidence and multiple eye witnesses and the judge just dismissed the case? Then, her father slanders your family, and ruins your businesses and careers?" He redirects his attention to me, "Then, Ms. Denali is arrested on federal charges, gets out, I assume on bail, and stalks you, even though you have an order of protection? Her father, the Mayor, then comes here and threatens you all, while the media is standing outside? Did I miss anything?" he asks bewildered.
"Um, yeah. You pretty much got it," I answer back, nervously. The way he just summarized the whole ordeal was hitting me hard. My entire life was just summed up like an embarrassing soap opera plot line.
"We're going to take this back to our sergeant, and you will be hearing from me either tonight or in the morning. I would recommend that you all stay indoors until you hear something from me. Please don't make any further comments to the media, this is now considered an ongoing investigation," he states, getting up to leave, but turns back to me. "Here is my card. Call me if you need anything, or remember something else that can help with the case."
And, as always, leave it to Emmett to break the tension in the only way that he knows best.
"Book em', Danno!" Emmett shouts out, with a fist pump in the air.
"Really, Emmett? What am I going to do with you?" my mother asks, shaking her head. But, even I could see the smirk she was trying to hide.
After the detectives are gone, we go into the living room. "I'm going to head out. I'll be back in the morning. Please take the detective's advice and stay in," Mr. Jenks suggests, heading for the door.
Jasper turns the television on as we sit there. The news station is having a field day with Eleazar and Tanya, both. They kept showing pictures of Tanya being arrested at the diner and Eleazar shouting at the reporters in front of our house. Finally, my mother turns it off as she gets up stating, "I think I have seen enough of those horrible people for today. I'm going to start dinner."
"I'll help, Mom," I say, getting up and following her into the kitchen. I really do miss cooking, and can't wait to get back in the kitchen with Sarah. Mom and I work in silence, getting dinner prepared. Just as my mother is about to call everyone the table, my cell phone rings.
"Hello?" I answer hesitantly, not recognizing the number on the caller id.
"Mr. Cullen, this is Detective Seeley. I just want to let you know that Sergeant Turner will be overseeing your case. There will be a multitude of charges brought against Mr. Eleazar Denali, Judge Rodney Baker, Tanya Denali and Laurent Henry. I'll be contacting your attorney in the morning with the initial appearance information. The district attorney has already been contacted, and warrants for their arrest are being issued this evening."
"Thanks for letting me know. I would like to be at the initial appearance, if that is possible?" I ask, wanting to make sure justice is really going to be served this time.
"I don't see a problem with that. Your attorney will be in contact with the specific details. Thanks for your time," he tells me before ending the call.
I walk into the dining room where everyone is already gathered, and relay what the detective had told me.
"I guess I need to call Bella in the morning and let her know what is going on in case we are held up here longer than we anticipated," my father announces, clearly annoyed that this could delay our move.
"Well, if the couple that was interested in the house today puts an offer in, we may have to check into an extended stay hotel or one of those short term rental places," my mother states, sighing loudly. "I hate that this is happening to you again, Edward."
"Me, too, Mom," I agree, frowning at how this is effecting their lives again. "Me, too."
After everyone is finished eating, Jasper and Alice clean the kitchen. I head to bed because I just want the day to be over. I still cannot believe that this could possibly be keeping me from leaving town like I want. Damn you, Tanya, and the hole she slithered out of.
