Chapter 7: Fears

Normal POV

What's going on? Atem thought as he stared in horror at Yugi's door to his mind. If Atem had not been completely positive that he was starring at Yugi's door, he would never have known where it was. The door had turned completely black, along with the walls, and a darkness was slowly crawling across the floor like shadows from a sunset.

"Well, where's the door pharaoh?" Marik angrily asked aloud.

"Look it's right here." Ryou said, pointing to the faint outline of the door before Atem could say anything. "And the handle is right- Ah!" As Ryou was reaching for the handle, black vines shot out and wrapped around his wrist, like it had done to Atem earlier.

"Ryou!" Everyone shouted when they realized that Ryou could not pull away and blood was starting to drip from his wrist. Bakura grabbed ahold of the vines and tried ripping them apart, but they split in two and wrapped around Bakura's hands as well as tightening around Ryou's.

Marik quickly ran over to Ryou and Bakura, grabbed ahold of both their arms, and spoke the same words as before when he released Atem from the darkness. "Eliberare!"

The vines immediately let go, but then dozens more began to appear, preparing to attack the ground.

"Se Apara!" Malik shouted and a gold veil covered each person, causing the vines to bounce off of them.

Malik quickly ran to Ryou, who was now on the ground holding his still bleeding wrist.

"Move your hand." Malik told Ryou gently. Ryou nodded and removed his hand to show Malik that the wound was deep, turning black, and blood was dripping to the floor. "Curata iar insantosi." Malik said softly and the darkness immediately began seeping out and then the wound closed, not even leaving a scar. Malik looked over at Marik to see him healing Bakura, then turned to Atem and motioned him to the door.

"Rasfira!" Marik shouted and the darkness on the door leading to Yugi's mind parted to show that the door was completely covered with cracks. Malik placed both his hand on the door and a golden light shown from his hands and onto the door. "Ma auzi?" Malik asked and the golden light began to pulsate as he spoke. "Ne permit sa treaca." Malik stared at the door fearfully when it did not open. "Permiteti-ne in!" The door still would not open and Malik was getting worried. "Marik," he called out not looking away from the door, "I can't feel his consciousness."Malik shouted running to Marik.

Marik walked to the door and place one hand on it. "It will not open to you Malik because you wish to open it and enter, you must be willing to stay here if you want the door to open. The block that Shadow has placed on this door can since your desperation to reach your friend and will not allow you to enter, but I can open the door because I am willing to stay here."

"No!" Marik shouted running to Marik. "You can't, you just got back, I don't want to go without you!"

"You'll see me again Hikari." Marik said and brushed away the tears that had started to run down Malik's face. "This isn't goodbye as long as you promise to come back to me."

Malik nodded, still crying, and Marik placed both hands on the door and the golden light again appeared and began to pulse when Marik started speaking. "Am sa spui nici un rau. Permiteti-mi intrare!" Marik took a deep breath and then began chanting the same language, forcing the door to open. "Have Malik tell me when you need me to open the door again." He said to Atem.

"We'll be back soon Marik." Atem reassured him, then turned to the others. "Let's go."

"Take care." Marik replied as everyone left and only Malik was left standing in front of Marik. "Malik?"

Malik sobbed and ran up to Marik, wrapping his arms around Marik's neck and kissing him on the lips. The kiss was not gentle, but rough and passionate and full of the love they had for each other. Marik broke the kiss to lean down and whisper in Malik's ear. "Je t'aime mes Hikari." Tears poured down Malik's cheeks and he buried his head into Marik's chest. "Je vous verrai bientot." Marik lifted Malik's lips to his own one last time and then pushed him through the door right as it slammed shut; Marik no longer had the strength to keep it open. Etre sur. He whispered through his link with his Hikari.

Ryou's POV

Ryou walked through the doorway to Yugi's mind after Bakura and immediately felt himself falling and before he had a chance to even make a sound in terror and shock, he was caught by Bakura.

"Shh," Bakura soothed when Ryou couldn't calm down, "it's ok. It wasn't that high, everybody's fine."

"What's wrong with him?" Malik asked when he landed next to them.

"He's afraid of heights." Bakura answered still trying to calm Ryou.

"What? Why?" Atem asked, Ryou had never before mentioned a fear of heights.

Ryou took a deep breath to calm himself so that Bakura would not have to tell them of Ryou's fear, he needed to do this. He needed to explain before they went any further.

"Back in London when I was eight and my mother was alive and my father lived with me, something happened, something that cause my mother to loose her life and for my father to blame me for it and send me away. We lived in a flat that was sixteen stories high and we were a very close family, my father and mother loved each other as much as they loved me. One night when my father was at work and my mother was cleaning the kitchen, the flat caught on fire. My mother ran to my room and carried me out, but when she went to open the front door we were blown backwards, right out the window. Luckily, my mother was able to grab ahold of the railing under the window, but she was still holding onto me and she couldn't hold on for long. So, mother lowered me down to the window below ours and I climbed through, but as she was lowering herself to the window the railing broke and she fell. I ran as fast as I could down to the street and by the time I got there the police and firefighters were working on controlling the fire while paramedics were covering up my mother. I had tried to run to her, but an officer had stopped me and I had to watch as the paramedics took my mother away and I never got to see her again. The next day my father put me on a plane to Domino City to live with my grandmother and I haven't seen or heard from him since then. I've been terrified of fire and heights ever since that night."

"What caused the fire?" Malik asked sympathetically, he understood what it felt like to loose a parent, even if his father had been abusive it was all he knew of love except the love he received from his sister, Odion, and Marik.

"I don't know." Ryou said, leaning further into Bakura's embrace. "It was never discovered and reported as a freak accident."

"Ryou," Atem said worried that they might be overheard, "I don't think that it's a good idea for us to be discussing our fears aloud right now."

Bakura paled and held Ryou closer and Ryou nodded in agreement with Atem when he realized that Shadow might be listening in on them.

"Um guys," Malik said nervously, "which way are we supposed to go now?"

Atem, Ryou, and Bakura turned around to see four different doors.

"That way." Both Bakura and Ryou replied confidently, pointing at the second door. Atem walked over and opened it to reveal a short hallway that lead to a very tall staircase. Atem looked back at Bakura and Ryou questioningly and they nodded to confirm that it was the right way. Atem looked doubtful, but he trusted Ryou and Bakura so he lead the way down the hall and up the stairs, but the higher they got the more fear that Ryou began to feel.

Dear Ra, I hope it isn't much further. Ryou thought when it seemed as if the stairs were going to go on forever. It was only a couple seconds later that one of the steps decided it was going to fall in right as Ryou put his foot down. As Ryou fell, the scenery suddenly changed and Ryou fell on his hands and knees on a bridge and as he looked down he saw a large pit of fire. Ryou screamed and scrambled backwards right into Bakura's waiting arms.

"It's ok Ryou." Bakura said and covered Ryou's eyes with his hand, but Ryou could still feel the heat of the flames. "It's ok, I'm here Ryou, I've got you."

"NO!" Ryou screamed tearing away Bakura's hand and quickly stand up and looking for a way to get away. "I want to find a way straight to Yugi that will have nothing that will stand in our way or abuse our fears!"

"Ryou," Bakura said gently, "I don't think that you can-" He cut himself off as the scenery immediately changed again to reveal a glowing gold path in a grey-walled hallway.

Wow! Ryou thought in complete shock. I didn't actually think that that would really work.

"Fantastic," Bakura said sarcastically and rolled his eyes, "we're supposed to follow the yellow brick road."

Ryou giggled, while Malik and Atem smiled, grateful to Bakura for lightening the mood.

"Come on guys," Ryou said somewhat cheerfully now that he had nothing to fear. He grabbed Bakura's had and ran ahead, looking over his shoulder at the others, "let's go."

Atem's POV

Atem watched as Ryou skipped along the path holding tightly to Bakura's hand and Malik walking slightly behind him, but Atem couldn't join in with Ryou's good mood, something didn't feel right. Atem should have been able to sense Yugi's consciousness now that they were deeper in his mind, but he couldn't hear a thing from Yugi and even if Yugi was trapped in the dark, this was still his mind. Atem greatly feared that something had happened and he knew that when he reached the end of this path, he wasn't going to like what he's going to see. Atem's thoughts were cut off by a loud scream and he quickly looked up to see Ryou running back this way.

"I can't." Ryou sobbed in shame and horror.

"What?" Atem asked worried. "What happened?"

"The path leads down a cliff." Bakura said coming up behind Ryou. "Ryou is staying here and I'm going to stay up here with him."

Atem nodded in understanding, he knew that Bakura wouldn't leave his Hikari up here alone, so he placed his hand on Bakura's shoulder in farewell and then walked to Malik who was standing by a staircase that led down to the bottom of the cliff. As they made their way down, Atem kept getting brief glimpses of falling from the top of the cliff. The moment his feet touched the ground, Atem got the most vivid vision of seeing Yugi hit the ground and then getting wrapped in chains and dragged away.

"Atem?" Malik asked, snapping Atem out of the vision. "Are you ok?"

"Yes." Atem replied breathlessly, still getting over the initial shock of seeing Yugi being pulled away. "He's in there." Atem was pointing at a door that had dark chains crossing it off and then Atem turned to Malik, who nodded and walked up to the door.

"Rasfira!" The chains reluctantly released the door, then broke, fell to the ground, and disappeared. Malik placed both his hands on the door and the golden light once again appeared and began to pulse. "Noi suntem aici, Permiteti-ne in." The door opened slowly at Malik's gently spoken words to reveal a pitch black room. As soon as the door was completely open, torches lit up along the walls, and Malik and Atem gasped in horror at what they saw.
