The next morning Lysander woke up feeling a little unsettled. It was the same feeling he got when something he dreaded was going to happen. The problem was that he had no idea what was it that he was dreading.
He didn't even need to open his eyes to set his alarm on snooze. He sighed, got up and put his face between his hands, the cover hiking up to his stomach, which started to growl. Last night he didn't eat anything because he had stayed up all in his room working, doing homework and trying to finish a song lyrics. Too much work had piled up but the fact was that he had been trying to distract himself without much success. His mind kept coming back to the day before and Lysander was actually dreading was seeing Rosie again.
After dragging his hands over his face he went to the bathroom and cleaned his face with the soap his dermatologist had prescribed him. Amalia, his mother, had decided to take Leigh and Lysander to the dermatologist when they first hit their pre-teen years. The reason being that Amalia's skin condition wasn't good at all when she was young. A fact that made her uncomfortable and insisted to her sons that they had to take care of their skin.
And unknowingly for Lysander that meant healthy skin, just like a baby. A fact that he wasn't really aware of. He just thought his skin health was good so much that shaving wasn't such a bothersome. He didn't really have much facial hair so he didn't even need to do it often. Something inherited from his mother, all in all his genetics was pretty good. Except for his hair and eyes. he didn't really like them, it called too much the attention and people always asked whether his hair was naturally white or if he used contacts. Not that he minded the he minded the questions…wait, he did mind the questions. Why did everyone have to be such…
Lysander splashed cold, cold water on his face and then took a small towel to dry his face. He looked at himself in the mirror. The shadows under his eyes were visible, his hair that was unusually messed up.
He sighed and stripped off his clothes taking a quick shower by the time he came out with his things ready in to the kitchen, Rosalya and Leigh were sitting together in one chair. He smiled as Rosalya fed Leigh some toast. Sure, it was cute but the fact that that was his brother and that girl was as good as a sister...
"Canoodling even in the morning, is the night not enough for you two?" rosalya looked up smirking.
"we refrain from canoodling in the nights because we fear our screams might wake you up lys-baby." Lysander put a hand to his face.
"too much information." Rosalya and Leigh laughed. Lysander sat down and ate breakfast which wasn't really breakfast. It was toast and coffee. No bacon, no eggs, no pancakes or porridge or anything that might keep him going for the day. Lysander had forgotten to buy the supplies for the week yesterday.
"are you nervous by any chance?" asked Rosalya laying her head on Leigh's shoulder. Her eyes looked at him keenly for a moment before closing them.
"no. why do you ask?"
"you look jumpy." Said rosalya.
"coffee." Said Lysander by the way of an answer.
"ah." Was all Rosalya said and she started a conversation with Leigh whilst Lysander quietly ate his breakfast. She looked at him and asked.
"done?" he nodded and she pecked Leigh on the cheek. He smiled at her literally glowing and Lysander felt that little pang in his chest bitter sweet happiness. The happiness you had when two people you loved got together but your own heart broke because you had once upon a time liked one of them.
He didn't know that love was on it's way.
When he arrived by the fountain he sat down with Nathaniel and Castiel they talked about the GTA6 they were going to release that year, more song lyrics and Demon who was going to have "little doggies".
None of them noticed a girl was walking towards the fountain. A girl with a black hoodie, leather bag, dark jeans, cheap green and black sneakers. Lysander looked up just in time to see Rosaline face almost covered by the hood when a voice shouted.
"Oi, Rose!" the girl turned around and the same black haired boy was there with a bag in his hand. He was looking from place to place carefully trying to locate the brunette but he couldn't see her. Rosie who had turned around pushed her hood back revealing her wet hair. She raised her voice and Lysander was surprised to hear her loud voice.
"I'm here!" the black haired boy snapped his head to the right and when he saw her he walked towards her. Lysander felt a horrible stone in his stomach, who was that guy?
He's her best friend. His brain reminded him but when he looked at those two nothing about them looked as if they were friends. They looked like a couple and a cute one.
The boy said something to Rosie and she blushed taking the bag in his hand. She told him something and it didn't go unnoticed the fact that her hair was wet, that the other's boy hair was wet and that they were both glowing.
What made him angry though was the fact that the boy pecked Rosie's cheek and then, he looked directly into Lysander's eyes giving him a smug smile. As if taunting him because he didn't have candy. He winked at Rosie and walked away but not before taking out his tongue at Lysander. A fact that didn't escape from Rosalya or Leo's eyes, however Rosie didn't see it because she had her back to him. Rosie turned and came over by the fountain.
"Good Morning." She was glowing.
"Who is that?" asked Rosalya without preamble.
"And why do you want to know?" she asked raising an eyebrow but still smiling.
"Curiosity." Said Rosalya lightly but she had that look that Rosie identified. Still, Rosie wasn't the type to lie.
"That's Nico. He's my best friend." She said as she opened the bag in her hand and she took out a medium brown paper bag with the logo of Starbucks printed on the right side. Rosie frowned with surprise and she opened it, revealing a muffin, a sandwich and a brand new cup to keep her drinks warm. She was surprised to feel her cup warm as if it was full of something warm. She shook her cup a little and it indeed had something inside.
"he doesn't really look like a friend." Rosie closed her bag, but not before a shoe fell out of her bag. She looked up uncomfortably before bending a little and picking up her shoe.
"I am different when I'm with my friends." Was all she said.
"and we're not your friends?" asked Rosalya angrily. Rosie looked at her calmly.
"I have known you for two weeks I am not sure I can call you a best friend Miss Rosalya." Rosalya was taken aback. The truth was that she wasn't angry at her but she was angry at her she was angry that that hot boy had appeared and she was afraid he would try to thwart her plans. Fortunately for her Leo was there to save her.
"so, how did you like the clothes I made?" he asked eagerly. Rosie raised her eyebrows.
"you made them?"
"yes, you ddn't like them?" he asked his face falling a little.
"No, I loved them. I really liked these." She said holding up the shoe that had fallen down. Leo looked at her surprised.
"you didn't strike me as the type that likes 7 inch high heels." Rosaline shrugged.
"sometimes I want to look like a girl."
"you don't need to." Said Lysander. Rosalien looked up to him.
"I beg your pardon?"
"I'm saying you don't need heels to look like a girl, you are one and it's obvious." Rosaline looked at him quietly.
"thank you." She said finally and when she moved her gaze away he could see the momentary shift in her eyes, the uncomfortable. "anyways, thanks for the outfit leo. It was lovely."
"well, thank your boyfriend not me sweetie."
"he's not my boyfriend." She said flatly.
"well you did spend the whole night with him." Said Leo. Partly because he was asked by Nico and partly because he too was curiosu to see Lysander's reaction, which was immediate.
"I had a slumber party with him." Corrected Rosaline.
"you slept with him?" asked Bianca. Rosalien looked at her horrorified.
"what? No! He just invited some other friends…"
"an orgy, then?" asked Leo to piss Rosalien off.
"No! We just got together with some friends went partying and then we went to his house, had a spa evening and then we watched movies until we feel asleep." she said vehemently and upon seeing the reaction of Leo's doubtful face, she threw her hands up.
"fine, believe what you want." She shoved her shoe in her bag and without another word walked back into the campus. Rosalya looked at Castiel, he looked at her.
Is she saying the truth? she mouthed. And Castiel nodded. Rosalya grinned triumphantly. Then she looked at Lysander and he seemed to be lost in the clouds. She had not noticed the relief in his shoulders or the strange calm that seemed to have come to him.
"ah, she takes things so literal." Said Leo boringly.
"give her time." Bianca said. She leaned her head on Castiel's shoulder. The bell rang and they all got up to go to their respective classes.
When the bell rang for lunchtime all the group got together at an incredible fast speed. All of them had a silent pact about getting there to lunch fast. They all sat down, some chatting, some with their noses stuck down inside a book and others lost in the clouds like Lysander. Rosie who was the only one missing was walking down the hall near the fountain, she had cooled down after all that and had decided to have lunch with her friends but just about when she was going to take a step when her phone buzzed. She stopped and frowned. There were only three people who she had that could message her while she was in class, the rest were blocked. And it was usually for emergencies. She took out her phone and saw Nico's phone number. She put the phone to her ear and asked immediately.
"What's wrong?"
"nothing is wrong." replied the male voice from the other side of the phone.
"then why did you call me?" refrained Rosaline. "you know I don't answer calls during class."
"I just wanted to ask you to have lunch with me." said the voice sincerely and she felt guilt in her gut momentarily.
"you could have come and asked me Nico and I would have gone with you." There was a pause on the other side and when Nico talked again it was in his serious voice.
"I needed to talk about you manuscript." Rosie's eyebrows shot up.
"you already read it? But I gave it to you 3 days ago!"
"I am your editor I have to edit your stories you dummy."
"but at the rate you're going you will fail in your classes!" she cried.
"you keep forgetting that I am Nico Martinez the genius of my class. Do you have that little faith in me?"
"I do have faith in you but you are no super human either."
"you forget that I don't have two part time jobs like you and my parents send me money constantly."
"lucky you." muttered Rosie. Nico made a noise from the other side and he said.
"Look, what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't worry about me."
"but I can't help it you…"
"I am not the person you knew before." There was long pause and Rosie sighed running a hand through her now dry hair.
"I know you never needed me before and now you don't either but I can't help it Nico!"
"I wish you didn't. You sound like a mum."
"maybe because I have many sisters I have had to play mum's role before."
"or maybe you secretly have had a baby with Lysander Ainsworth and you haven't told me." said Nico in a very serious manner. Rosie scowled.
"Nico…"
"Wanna go for lunch or not?" he asked cutting in. Rosie sighed and said.
"Yes but on one condition."
"Which would be?"
"No expensive restaurant."
"Done." Said Nico.
"Kay I'll meet you at the gates."
"No. Wait for me by the fountain."
"Why?" asked Rosie suspiciously.
"I still have to pay Leo for your clothes."
"Oh, okay." And with that she hung up.
Nico was grinning on the other side of the phone call.
When rosie was walking near the fountain Rosalya immediately took notice of her. This was because she was now wearing her hood down and her hair loose wild. She was just starting to talk towards the fountain when she stopped took out her phone and started talking. Her facial expressions changed dramatically but they al had one thing in common: they were all meaningful and emotional. Which surprised Rosalya. Because the girl rarely showed so much emotion. Ditto, she didn't have penchant for smiling or tried to not smile too much she did successfully manage to show little, or what Rosalya thought as little emotion.
When she started to walk towards the fountain, she looked up to see Lysander's expression but he seemed to be absorbed in a conversation with Nathaniel. Castiel, who was listening half-way the conversation looked up and met Rosalya's eyes. She jerked her chin towards Rosaline and Catiel followed her eyes and found Rosaline's figure moving. He raised an eyebrow to her and Rosalya mouthed Rosaline. Castiel shook his head a little as if saying "duh!" and Rosalya rolled her eyes.
"Oi you two quit talking with your eyes, I also want to." said Bianca coming into view. Castiel snapped his head to her and got that look in his eyes. Like his whole world had suddenly lit up.
"Mr. Ainsworth?" Lysander who had been talking with Nathaniel looked up at her and smiled warmly.
"Yes, Rosie?" he said her nickname and for no good reasons a blush crept the girl's face. She immediately hardened her face.
"Do you remember I said that I would take the male lead and write two more chapters?"
"yes I do." He said brushing his asymmetrical bangs to the side of his face, something that didn't exactly do wonders for Rosie's concentration but she hid it well.
"Well, it seems I got a little inspired and I wrote a little more than I should have." She said seriously. "And since we have to do this work together I was hoping you could help me cut out the unnecessary parts." She handed him the Kindle and on top of it was a little black pendrive. As his eyebrows rose in inquiry she said.
"Inside the pendrive are the files I have typed and there is also my work done, do you think you can correct it?" she asked calm and composed but she was uncomfortable. She never asked anyone to edit her work except Joe and Nico. But this…this was a just an assignment and she had to flexible. Yes, it was just an assignment. She told her herself. Lysander's eyes glittered and he said.
"Yes of course. I think I could have it by tomorrow."
"Okay, thanks. Thanks for the kindle."
"Your welcome. If you need it again you can just ask." Rosie raised her eyebrows.
"I wouldn't want to bother you."
"It's nothing to get worked up for." Said Lysander and Rosie had a strange look in her eyes. she opened her mouth to say something but just then a voice called out.
"Ohhh Burgeeer!" Rosie frowned at the source of the voice, a black haired boy with coal lit eyes.
"Burger." Said rosie flatly. "seriously?" Nico stopped and looked at her with eyebrows raised.
"Moody today?" he raked her up and down. "ah, let's see if we can improve that mood of yours." He winked at her while she rolled her eyes.
"Just hurry up and do what you have to do." Nico grinned and took out his wallet he walked to Leo and gave him some notes. He said something short to Leo and shook his hand while Rosie watched him patiently. When he was done, he turned and tossed something to her Rosie moved forward as if meaning to catch it but she slipped on the concrete and lurched forwards falling on her face.
Or she would have fallen on her face had it not been that Lysander had moved forward and caught her. His hands were on both sides of her waist supporting her while her head was on his chest. Rosie started to say thank you, lifting her head away when she saw Lysander's face her caught on fire. Almost immediately and put her both hands on his chest, creating space between them in an almost violently manner. Lysander was surprised and a little confused by her reaction.
"I-I'm s-sorry!" she said and walked away quickly, almost running away from him. Lysander was about to shout something when a soft laugh reached his ears.
"Interesting." Nico, like the other people by the fountain, had been watching the exchange with quite interest and had finally formed a theory. Luckily he didn't grin like maniac. He just looked at them with a carefree, poker face. He noticed Lysander was glaring at him and finally said.
"Glaring at me, isn't going to improve your romantic prospects, Ainsworth." With that he breezed past Lysander to join Rosaline.
