The story where one averts one's eyes.
{Don't touch the heart that wants to disappear anymore than this}
Today was like any other day.
Boring.
Nothing happens in the life of Gray Fullbuster, ever. Everything's always the same.
"Aah!"
He slightly turned to watch a girl take a terrible stumble down many flights of the stairs, her legs entangling with anyone that was walking. He watched as she painfully smacked every concrete step with her skull, finally sprawling out on the marble floor.
People continued on like nothing at all happened, a few even walking right over her. Gray stared at her for a moment, debating if he should do the same.
She cradled her head between her knees, withering slightly in pain. When she rocked back up her eyes were scrunched closed in pain, mouth quivering with unshed tears.
Sighing, the dark haired boy walked over to the bluenette and picked up her few binders and sheets of paper, holding them out for her while she continued to wince obliviously.
"Here," he grunted, shaking her papers impatiently. She jumped slightly, her tear stained blue orbs slowly trailing up to his face. Her surprise was met with a harsh stare from the boy.
He directed her attention towards her papers with another shake. Her head snapped toward the sound and a small smile dipped onto her lips as she took them from him gratefully.
"Thank you," She said quietly, only to watch him already walking away from her.
He didn't notice her sparkling gaze following his retreating form.
Gray walked into his history class and stared at his desk for a few moments, stumped.
There, lying neatly on his desk top, was a bento.
He subtly gazed around for the cause of this, and as usual no one looked his way.
"Juvia wanted to thank you."
He looked straight ahead to see the blunette from yesterday, tucking a strand of hair behind her head bashfully.
"For yesterday." She explained, a light blush covering her pale cheeks. Gray continued to stare on emotionlessly, his only response a blink.
"Please refrain from gratitude." He replied in a monotone, pushing the bento towards her. Her eyes widened and she looked up only to see his eyes cold and distant, an unamused frown on his face.
"B-But Gray-sama-"
"I do not wish to form a friendship with you." He said bluntly, setting his things down and sitting down. She gaped at him, rejection filling her.
She turned to sit down in her assigned seat next to the window which was right next to his, a frown on her face. She blew out a sad sigh, staring down at her rejected bento. Great, she had woken up extra early just to make it for him and put all her hard work into it!
He leant on his elbow in boredom as the teacher passed back their recent test scores, his face not showing any indication of his grade.
"What did you get Gray-sama?" She asked cheerfully, trying to strike up a conversation with the male once more.
"Does it matter?" He replied breezily, not even looking over towards her.
"I only got a 74, blehh.." She stuck her tongue out at her own grade, not fazed by his rudeness. He sighed extra loud, trying to hint that he was unhappy with their conversation.
"I got an 100. Same as always." He grumbled, finally allowing himself to look at her. Her blue eyes widened before a wide grin broke out on her face, her eyes shining.
"A-Amazing Gray-sama! That's fantastic!" She cheered, hope swelling in her chest.
"Amazing? It was just a stupid easy test, I'm surprised you didn't get one. You must be stupider than I originally thought, though I believed you were some sort of air head." He replied wearily, her praise leaving his stomach churning in turmoil.
Her hope fizzed out like a candle light, her body deflating in disappointment. Why was he so mean? He had seemed so nice yesterday, reaching out and helping her...
"Psst!"
Juvia's eyes wandered over towards her friend Lucy, who was waving her hands around to grab her attention.
He's not worth it! She mouthed, talking about Gray. Juvia pouted, looking the other way.
No, he was worth it! He had to be...she felt different around him. They had been sitting next to each other the whole year, and yet all of a sudden whenever she thought of him her heart would begin to beat quickly and it would become harder to breath.
She blushed at the thought, feeling warm.
"I guess you're right, Juvia is distracted easily!" Juvia giggled lightly, trying to clear the atmosphere between her and Gray. The boy looked towards her with a dull expression, his mouth slack as he mouthed his words.
"I knew that, what with your fall yesterday. You nearly made me late for class." He scowled at her, eyebrows furrowing in annoyance. She jumped in surprise, feeling bad.
"Gomenasai! Juvia didn't mean to make Gray-sama late...though Juvia is very grateful!"
"Why do you talk in third person?"
She winced at his question, turning away instinctively. She quickly turned back towards him, her mouth opening and yet nothing coming out.
He hummed in response, once more leaning on his elbow. Honestly, this girl intrigued him...she was determined to get to know him, and put up with his crap? She must be desperate or something...
He continued to ignore her and the teacher, staring off into meaningless space.
"Good morning Gray-sama!"
He sighed.
For the past week, this blue haired weirdo had been following him everywhere throughout school. She always greeted him at the same time every morning, and she always had that stupid smile on her face.
"I've already asked you to stop calling me that." He replied instinctively, walking onwards, not even hesitating to greet her.
She scampered forward, trying to catch up. "G-Gomenasai...Gray-sam-Gray..." She corrected herself quickly, bowing her head in apology as they strolled along. He tsked at her, turning his head the other way so he didn't have to look at her.
"Why don't you go walk with someone who actually likes you?" He asked suddenly, his voice a void of emotion. He wasn't saying this to hurt her-it was just the rude truth.
"Cause I like walking with Gray-sama!" Juvia replied, as cheerful as always as she giggled at his sharp look. She inconspicuously drew closer, shoulder to shoulder with him now.
"I already told you: leave me alone." He replied in irritation, quickening his pace once more. She matched it again, her own eyebrows furrowed.
"Why?" She asked innocently, not understanding what their problem was.
"Why do you even like me? I'm an average guy. If I die then I'll be easy to replace." He mumbled quietly, his hands digging further into his pockets at the sad truth.
The world is boring and everything in it is renewable. His thoughts revolved around this always.
"That's not true!" She touched his elbow, stopping him in his walk. "Gray-sama you shouldn't talk about dying so lightly..." Her eyes darkened, a gloomy aura hanging around her. "All of your friends and family would be devastated; I certainly would be!" She mumbled, her voice dry.
He blinked at her, for once in his life surprised.
"Friends? Family?" He snorted, melting back into his regular self. "I have none." He said coldly, walking on, this time without her.
She stared after him, her blue eyes pooling with sadness.
Gray walked into history with a blank stare, noticing each desk held a graded paper on top.
100 He guessed, and when he came across his desk he was right. A light smirk graced across his features though he held no emotion, sitting down silently.
Every day the same, everything the same.
Life was utterly boring.
"Gray-sama!" Juvia called, tripping over a chair leg and toppling to the floor. Gray held in his amusement, watching as she winced while picking herself up, her knees scraped.
"G-Gray-sama.." She called weakly, shuffling towards her desk next to his. He narrowed his eyes at her, scoffing and turning the other way. Her smile dropped until she saw the paper on her desk, turning it around curiously to see the grade.
"A 'D'?" She gasped, disappointed in herself. Gray couldn't stop himself from curiously looking over, a smile ghosting his lips at the ashen look on her face.
She hid her emotions, a wistful smile the best she could portray. "What did you get Gray?" She asked curiously.
He rolled his eyes and huffed, instead of replying he threw his paper onto her desk so she could take a look herself.
"A 100 again?" She gasped in awe, shaking her head. Her eyes gazed at his stubborn pout, a smile tracing her lips.
"It's nothing special." He replied bluntly, his mood dampening.
"Well what about now-?" She folded the paper then revealed her masterpiece, an origami crane in her hands, a wide smile on her face.
He forgot to act detached for a moment, eyes widening. He leaned towards her utterly curious, poking the crane's beak. She giggled at his expression and he met her eyes, a genuine smile gracing his lips.
"That is pretty special." He grumbled, dark eyes still staring at it. She blushed at his new attitude, though secretly loved it.
"You can have it. Juvia can make your tests into them every time if you want!" She offered kindly, blue eyes dancing with happiness.
"Y-You would?" He met her eyes, his dark orbs yearning for the neat ability. Juvia nodded her head enthusiastically, causing Gray to grin widely.
