Chapter 19: Be Good
After training for a few hours at the base, Pedro finally slides back towards his home. He half hopes that Adriana has left or that everything earlier was just hallucinations left by his hangover. Though, he knows it was really real. He sighs a little and opens the door and waddles inside. So far, he does not see a single sign of Adriana, except her cloak in the chair. 'What's this? Is she going out murdering penguins while I'm gone at training or something? Because that's not going to work!' He thinks with a small snort as he takes his gun holster belt off and puts it away in its drawer. He goes to the bedroom and lays down with a sigh. It is not long until he hears the door open again. 'And my murderess is back...' He thinks as he gets up with a silent sigh. "So...Who did you..." He asks as he waddles to the living room and then raises a nonexistent eyebrow at her and the groceries. "Never-mind..."
"What?" Adriana retorts as she waddles past. "Never seen a woman bring in things from the store before?"
Pedro just looks at her. "No, I have...I just never have seen a criminal bring groceries inside my house before…" He says.
Adriana rolls her eyes. "Well, now you have, and if you like, you can help her bring the groceries in! Or, you can just stand there with your beak flapping and catch flies." She says. Pedro without another word goes outside. He figures that she must have 'borrowed' his car to get them and is a little nervous of its condition now. He is relieved to see that his 1970 forest green Camaro is still in one piece and isn't even scratched. "Wow...You act like you've never seen a car before, too, Copper." Adriana sarcastically says, coming up behind him.
Pedro turns a bit and looks at her. "I haven't really had anyone else borrow her before." He says.
"Sure...Just think of it as, I stole it then returned it." Adriana says and rolls her eyes. "And it is still all in one piece. You coppers aren't the only penguins who can drive, you know." She snorts as she continues waddling to the back of the car. "Now are you going to help, or what?"
"Yeah…" Pedro says mutely and waddles over to help her. Soon they have all of the groceries inside and he re-locks his car. "What...Exactly...Did you buy?" He asks slowly as he looks at what to him appears to be an ocean of stuff, with a slightly open beak.
Adriana looks at him weirdly. "Stuff you don't have and need, duuuh." She says. "Like flipping food besides that frozen stuff and cereal and alcohol! I mean, seriously!" Pedro just looks at her. He hopes this doesn't mean that she plans on him to cook things. He already knows he cannot cook really anything edible at all and doesn't really want Adriana to start picking on him about it. "Then, there's also some curtains here that will actually match the things in the house! How the heck you can stand all this clashing, I just can't see!" Adriana says, bringing Pedro back from his thoughts.
"Wh-What?" He stutters, now lost and confused in the conversation.
Adriana just looks at him for a moment and then just shakes her head. "Just go to bed. You're tired and irritating." She says. "I'll be there in a little while." Pedro silently looks at her for a moment and then nods and waddles to the bedroom, almost like in a daze.
'My criminal girlfriend is redecorating my house and buying food...' He silently thinks as he lays down. 'Wouldn't that be something to try to explain to Bob if he were to come over!' He then just lays there, looking at his ceiling. Adriana then waddles in sometime later as she has finished putting things away and Pedro turns his head to look at her. "Did you buy or steal all of that?" He asks silently.
"Buy, of course." She says, sitting down on the bed. "With the cash I got from your wallet and your credit card." She grins.
"Oh...Okay." Pedro says, nodding and closing his eyes for a moment before opening them back up widely. "You did WHAT?!" He exclaims and looks at her. "How much was it?! No. Wait! Don't tell me, I don't want to know!"
Adriana looks at him amusedly. "It didn't cost nearly as much as I would have prefered." She says, sticking her tongue out at him. "But, enough to take a nice little chunk out." She says. "Though, it was mostly all necessary things, Pedro." Pedro just groans a bit and lays back into the pillows and Adriana laughs a bit. "Anyway, what are we doing about dinner?" She asks. "You, me, or restaurante?" She asks.
Pedro looks at her. "Definitely not me." He says and yawns a little.
"And why not you?" She asks with a raised nonexistent eyebrow. "Because I'm not falling for that 'I work and am too tired routine.'" She says with a frown.
"No...It's just...I'm no good at it." He says and shrugs a little. "I can cook very little that is edible…"
Adriana just looks at him. "Okay, then let's go out." She says with a shrug. "Because I really don't feel like cooking now." She says and stretches some. "All that shopping wore me out." She says with a small, half-laugh.
Pedro sighs a bit with a grin. "Well, you didn't have to go shopping like that." He says.
"Of course I did!" She then exclaims with an open beak. "You had cash! It needed spent! It was bored!"
"My money was bored? I'd prefer to think of my money as happily saved." He replies, somewhat amused.
"Nah, happy money is that that which is being used, not collecting wrinkles from being in your wallet." She says.
"Suuuuuuurrrrrre." Pedro says, rolling his eyes with a grin. He then gets up and looks at her. "So, let's go blow whatever cash I have left in my account in dinner, Miss. Estrada." He says with a mock bow, getting her flipper and kissing it. "Consider this our first official cita*?"
Adriana laughs a little and nods, getting up. "Brazil wasn't that already? Because you really acted like it was then!"
Pedro shrugs. "I was hungry and hopeful." He says with a small laugh. "So...Make this our first non-cuffed date?" He laughs.
"Sure." She laughs and starts pulling him towards the door. "Are we going now or not?" She says with some impatience, looking back at Pedro who is not coming as quickly.
"Ehmm...Give me a minute." Pedro says, stopping and turns towards the bathroom.
"Why? What do you need to do?" She asks, crossing her flippers and leaning against the wall with a snort.
Pedro shrugs. "Shower, get ready." He says. "You know, that kind of stuff." He says and closes the bathroom door behind him.
"Stop being such a girl! It's just dinner!" Adriana just rolls her eyes and says.
"No. It's a date! There's a difference!" Pedro shouts back over the sound of the shower being turned on.
Adriana just shakes her head before thinking for a moment. She then slides over to the other bathroom in the house and takes a shower herself with some of the new soap and shampoo that she had bought with Pedro's card. After they both have finished showering and getting ready, they both go to the living room. "Now can we go?" Pedro nods and gets the car keys and the door for Adriana. She then waddles out to Pedro's forest green Camaro and gets into the passenger seat. Pedro follows her and gets into the driver's side. "So...Where are we going?" Adriana asks rather curiously.
"Wherever you want, I guess." Pedro says with a shrug as he starts his car. "I don't really care."
"Well, that's helpful…" She mutters. "Since I don't know anything about Peruvian restaurants, Copper." Pedro just shrugs and doesn't say anything. "That's still not helpful." She says with a glare at his shrugging.
Pedro shrugs again as he backs out from his driveway. "I'll just drive somewhere. It's cool." He says.
Adriana props her head up on her flipper on the side of the door and watches out the window for a while in silence, listening to the radio. Eventually she glances over at Pedro again. "About how long have you lived here?" She asks.
"Ehm…" He is quiet as he thinks. "I've been in Peru for most of my life, except for a few years that we lived in Argentina." He says and glances back at Adriana. "And you in Spain?" He asks.
"Eh, always." She says and shrugs. "Though, I've never stayed at the same spot for long." She says. "Too risky."
Pedro nods and turns down another road. "Speaking of moving...That's what you're doing now, yes? Moving into mi casa?"
"Maybe. What's it to you?" She asks, smirking.
"Well...It is my house. It would be nice to know if you are for sure moving in." He says and smiles some. "I could probably help you move."
Adriana just looks at him for a moment. "You'd help a criminal move into your house?" She asks.
"I would help mi novia move into my house." Pedro says, correcting her. "Criminal, no."
"But, Copper, you know I AM a criminal." She snorts.
Pedro shrugs. "Nah, not anymore."
Adriana looks at him rather taken aback. "Say what now?" She says, looking at him as if he's lost his mind.
"Well, do you think I'm really going to let you continue doing crimes while you live under my roof? No. No, you get to retire the cape and the knives." He says and looks at the road. "You know...Maybe settle down and stay awhile? So I don't have to arrest you again?" He looks over at her with his slightly sad hazel eyes. "Por favor?"
Adriana goes silent. This is not at all what she had in mind of staying with Pedro. She had thought that she would just continue on as she always has and that he would just have to learn to deal with it. That she would use his basement as a new scheming planning space. Maybe that she could even get Pedro to join her on a few crimes...That's what she had kind of been hoping most of all. As much as she prefers doing crimes alone, it can be a bit lonely and challenging. There are a few crimes that she really would like to do, that especially would be easier if she had help. She silently looks out the window now and watches the trees blur past. "...Not even vandalism?" She then asks silently. She thinks that this does not sound very appealing compared to what she had thought would happen.
Like prison.
She bites her tongue for a moment in thought as she sees Pedro nod. "Yes, no crimes at all." He says and Adriana shifts some. She isn't sure of this at all. It just sounds like she has swapped a prison cell for house arrest to her; neither of which sounds like much fun.
"...So...You basically expect me to stay around the house all day? That's it? No crimes? No freedom?" Adriana asks silently and looks at Pedro.
"Did I say 'You have no freedom' if you stay with me? I don't remember saying that. You just have to be good." He says and looks her back in her emerald green eyes. "Trust me, being good ain't that malo." He smiles.
Adriana looks away at the window as she conciders this. "We'll see..." Is all she says and sighs a little. "We will see..."
