The hug between Emily and James was warm and firm-it felt good for her now with her mind having some peace of mind of its own. Now that she no longer had to worry about Caleb doing him any harm, physically or mentally she was happy just to be with him again.
The time she spent looking, worrying for him-terrified that something awful could have happened to him-would have been enough to give her grey hairs in the head early by a couple of years. Now there was no word or words to describe how happy she was or how she was overfilled with joy to finally have him back-safe and sound.
It only took a few seconds for the thought to crawl back into her memory before she was able to remember of her pregnancy but for now she believed it would be best to hold off on it until they were back in Parker-she had no idea what he had already been through or the stress he endured so all she could do was wait for the right moment to tell him-and hopefully under better circumstances she can do it with just the two of them.
J.J. watched the two of them before returning to the job, it was more than probably one of the happiest expressions she had ever seen on Emily's face since she returned to work after everything that had happed with Doyle during the previous year. Since they returned from being held by the Cullen family the look was only something James was able to bring out of her.
As James was finally letting go of her body and neck after spending a long and warm hug on her, Emily took notice to a hole in James shirt that resembled holes that could have been made by shot gun pellets-but these were made by something to small to be a pellet, and she asks "James, what happened to you here?"
She was starting to examine the wound on his torso-near one of his already healing scars-and she soon took notice to the spots where there were bruises and burn marks left over from his torture session that was given by Caleb with the cattle prod earlier in the day after he was kidnapped.
James motions his head down and his eyes narrow in on what she was talking about as he looks at old sores and marks that were still left over from the second round of torture he endured from the prod that Caleb used so fondly.
"James what happened to you here?" Emily asked her question again, putting more emphasis and seriousness in her tone as she said "happened." He then looked at the burn marks and bruises, not sure he really wanted talk about the matter before considering it not worth hiding.
Emily was no fool, she would just keep looking, searching and theorizing until she found the answers she was looking for. They both knew this; James learned that the hard way a very long time ago.
"Ah screw it; she's going to find out either way." He thought to himself in his thoughts.
"Oh that." James speaks up, pretending that he hardly even noticed them all that much at the moment and that their concern was not really as alarming as they really were then he says as he begins to put more focus on them "When I came home from the police station I was ambushed by that Maggie girl and two of her friends. I was able to get them with a few of my shots, but when I went outside to make sure they were all really dead the next thing I know-boom- a fourth guy shot me with some rock salt-never saw it coming."
"And then?" Emily inquired, still interested as to how the burn marks came to be. James quickly says "Caleb, or maybe the guy who shot me dragged me back here-next thing I know I'm being tortured by Caleb and some guy named Jenkins and with a cattle prod no less. Hurt like hell too."
"James, why don't you just sit down for now and let me look at it." Emily orders him before James starts to stagger as he walks backwards to sit down and fall down on his ass hard, feeling the full force of gravity at work in that moment.
As Emily was looking at the wound Rossi immediately took notice and joins her, curious to see what she was doing. The others were busy with either the body that was Caleb or making a new plan worried that they have lost the element of surprise in their raid on the Cullen residence.
Emily analyzes the wound, seeing that he was not bluffing about the rock salt, finding some residue of the stuff still residing in his gunshot wound with only a little blood. Rossi comes up to see that she was looking through the wound and asks "Something wrong Emily?"
Emily looks over her shoulder to see him and replies "Looks like we're going to have to get James a doctor." Rossi looks at the wound himself and also notices the wounds and asks "They really went all out on you, didn't they."
"Yeah, that would be a real definite here." James said before looking at Emily and giving a quick segue; before either of them could say the next thing on their mind and in their mouths to cease his new few words "And as for sending me to the doctor again, seems a bit overdramatic don't you think Emily. This isn't the first time I've gotten myself hit with a little rock salt."
"You've had someone shoot you with this stuff before?" Rossi asks; befuddled for a reason as for a reason someone would willingly have themselves shot with rock salt more than once. It did not take long for either James or Emily for that matter to figure out what he was thinking based on what he was told and James clarifies it for the confused profiler "I didn't actually have it done to me on purpose, this one night me and my friend Oliver were coming home from this party and we decided to cut through this one yard as a short-cut and I guess the man in the house thought we were trying to break in cause he came out a couple of seconds later with a shot gun and I got hit hard with it a couple of seconds later; took me forever to finally get up from that."
Emily watched as James and Rossi were talking, she was still worried about him. The wounds on his body were not too serious to cause serious harm but it would still be good to have a doctor look at him as just a precaution for his health.
As James was speaking with Rossi, his eyes came to the body of Caleb Cullen-that they were not able to put a sheet over yet- and his eyes caught a glimpse of something hidden in his pocket that was now just barely peering out into visibility and he began to stand up.
Emily and Rossi both watch as James pulls himself up from the earth of the ground, his face was hiding the trauma he endured from him being tortured mercilessly behind a mask, but the mask was fragile and weak it could only hide so much under the surface and Emily could see through it all. He was cracking-everything thing that he was as a person was shaken to the inner core of his being.
Rossi watched as he remained perplexed and focused on the pocket as Emily asked "James, where are you going?" But he would not respond and she chases after him as he picks up speed "James what are you doing."
It quickly caught the attention of the rest of the team and Chief Brody immediately was ready to raise his weapon believing he was making a run for it but Elkins quickly raises his rifle to the Chiefs back, not surprised, he knew these cops would take any excuse at this point to get rid of James they always would especially the chief, and he says with his hand on the trigger "Don't even think about it Brody or you'll be dead before the bullet leaves the barrel."
The rest of the police officers on sight were ready with their weapons ready if they believed he would truly make a run for it and then James calms the situation as he continued walking "Relax, cowboys the lot of you, there's just something in the pocket."
Bringing the tension of the SWAT team on sight to a halt; he quickly puts his hand into the dead cousin's pocket. For a brief moment he caught a glimpse of the dead man's eyes and then the wolf tattoo on his hand-bringing forth the chill that ran up his spine as he backs away from the body with a piece of paper now in hand.
As James stared at the body he could not help but feel like he had lost someone close to him. Despite the fact that Caleb had tried to kill him on multiple occasions-as well as Emily, James could not help but feel an emptiness deep inside as he stared at the body. He had not known Caleb long, but he was one of the closest people in his family that he had felt close to for the first time in a long time.
Emily saw it too in his expression, throughout the time she and James were engaged together years before he rarely spoke of his family. Despite him telling a lie to the Cullen in the wheel chair James had other family members besides his parents and brothers, but he never spoke much of them. There was the uncle in New York that was his father's brother and a few distant cousins he rarely spoke to, but all of his life he wanted to meet the rest of his family, only they were monsters that he hated to no end and without limitation and now the only one he felt any real connection to was dead before him.
"What does the letter say?" Morgan asked as James finished unfolding a piece of paper before them.
Dear James
If you're reading this then I was right. On the chance that I'm dead just wanted to leave you a note to tell the truth and come clean.
All your life we watched you, I doubt you even remember but we had met once before years ago when you were a kid, you were probably no more than two or three at the time, I never forgot about you, neither did my family.
I tell you, there was so many times me and Steve wanted to meet you when you were a teenager. Dad would never let us do it though. Tyler eventually got that chance and he wound up ruining your life with that tramp you called your girlfriend.
I don't hate you for killing me or my brother Steve and my daughter Maggie; everyone has his time to go I guess. It was fun James; thanks for letting me get to finally meet you.
When you find my Father again, when you see him you better thank him, because he's goanna free your soul. But when you see my brother Tyler I hope you kill him, he brought it on himself like we all did after all the things we done.
Don't feel bad about this, I always knew this would come to an end, I won't hide from my guilt, and I take full responsibility for my actions.
Sincerely Caleb Cullen
As Emily watched James read the letter she could not long see just plain sadness on his face but now anguish to accompany it as he finally stopped reading the letter. His face looked up and stared at the body of Caleb Cullen one last time as his hand holding the unfolded letter fell.
Tears slowly flowed down from his eyes as the realization started to sink in. Soon the distraught turned to anger and hate as he thought of the ways he was going to kill who was ever left in the Cullen family. His memory flashed back for a second to the age the letter described when his uncle took him to a park where he would play with another boy by the name of Caleb, the memory had been repressed for so long that it felt like getting back a stolen part of his life.
To make him feel worse was the fact that he learned that he not only killed a son and a brother, but also a Father. And that he killed Caleb's daughter.
"James what's wrong?" Emily asks. James was unresponsive; he just put his hands to his face wiping the tears after Rossi took the letter from him to read it for himself.
There was no end to the various emotions that he felt about what he had done. Emily knew James was never one to resort to violence on a whim, but as the emotions were rushing through him she could only see one of them expressing on his face pure rage.
He then says "We need to get moving."
"Where are you going?" Emily asked. James looks back and says "When I escaped from Caleb earlier I knocked out this guy named Caleb. I'm pretty sure that if there are any more of them left he can answer a couple of questions I have for him about this Tyler person."
"And what if he doesn't want to talk to you?" Hotchner asks and James replies "Then I guess I'll have to compel him to see reason."
