AN: I don't own MI High, or anything else you recognise. I just own Demi, Jamie, David, Amanda, Patterson and Amy.
Demi's POV
After persuading Steinberg to help us shut down the reactor, and handcuffing him to Zoe so he couldn't run away, we headed to the reactor itself. My father checked that it was safe, and then we waited by the exit to double-check that we all knew the plan, and for Tom to open the door for us. "Right, I can overload the security protocols from here." He said, after scanning the panel. "It'll take a few minutes though."
"Zoe get down to the core, help Dr Steinberg shut it down, Dan, Aneisha go with them, guard the core entrance and keep clear of any KORPS soldiers. Demi, you're on backup. If things go quiet, you go and see what going on." My dad said.
"Frank, you're looking a bit older." Aneisha said, handing him a mirror.
"It's the reaction to the heavy extranium. The core must be melting faster than we thought." My dad said looking at himself in the mirror, and handing it back. "How come we're not affected?" Dan asked.
"You're not, it just has a slower effect on the biochemistry of the young." Steinberg said.
"On the bright side Frank, free bus travel!" Aneisha said. I laughed, as my father said,
"Good luck."
"I get the feeling we're going to need it." I said, leaning against the wall as my teammates entered the reactor. I needed to think. Amy must be bringing her plan forward, so I had to stop her. Alone. If I brought the others, they might get hurt. And then I remembered yesterday, and everything that happened with David. No matter what Tom said, I was still dangerous. I glanced at my father and faintly smiled. I didn't know what to do. If Patterson was still willing to take me with him, would I go? My dad would be fine, he would have Stella, and the new team. Perhaps it is better if I go. No one will be hurt that way. There's that decided then. If it means no one will be hurt, then I'll go. "Demi, we have to go." Said my dad. "It's gone too quiet." I nodded, and followed my father and Tom to the reactor controls, where we discovered that Zoe and Steinberg had mysteriously disappeared, and that the core was still melting down. "Dan you need to get in here now. Something's wrong." My dad said into his communicator, and a moment later Dan and Aneisha joined us. "What's Steinberg doing?" Aneisha asked.
"Nothing, because he's magically become invisible!" I replied.
"He's gone, is what she was trying to say. Zoe too." Tom said, looking at the console.
"What? How?" Dan asked.
"How am I meant to know? He just has!" I answered.
"There must be another was out." Tom added.
"We have to get her back." Dan said, heading towards the door into the reactor. My dad grabbed his shoulders and said,
"Dan, we've got about 5 minutes before the core explodes, and everyone in Europe dies instantly of old age. Focus! We have to shut the reactor down first."
"That's the problem Frank. We can't." Tom said, still staring at the console. "The processors are almost infinitely complex. I mean have you seen the control boards in there?"
"They just look like a bunch of flashy lights to me." I answered, looking for a pattern.
"There must be something!" My dad yelled.
"No, Steinberg is the only one!" Tom replied. "Hang on."
"I've seen those sequences before." Aneisha said.
"Yeah, me too." Tom said, pausing. "It's the Booger's Final Endgame!" He eventually said.
"The what now?" I asked. "What does that mean?"
"It's the game I was playing online. I can shut it down but..." Tom trailed off.
"But what?" Dan asked.
"It's so much bigger. There's two consoles, and I can't operate them both. I need someone to come in and help me, but there's only one containment suit. Whoever does go in will be dead in minutes." Tom said.
"But if one of us doesn't make the sacrifice, we'll die anyway." Aneisha said.
"How do we decide who does it?" Dan asked.
"Team?" My dad said, causing me to look up. "It's been an honour." He then entered the main reactor, causing me to scream.
"No! No! Come back now! Please!" I yelled, hitting my fist against the door. "You promised you wouldn't leave me alone again." I whispered.
"What do we do?" Aneisha asked.
"What we always do, we save the world. Now help me get this on, it'll stop me ageing in the core." Tom replied. I was still busy staring out at the core, where my father was. If Tom was right, he'd die in there, and I'd be alone. I felt the ceiling shake as a loud voice yelled, "Nobody move! MI9!"
"Stella's here." I whispered, sitting down in the corner. "It's not worth being a hero if you lose everything that matters to you." I whispered. Tom glanced at me, before entering the core. Dan began pacing, presumably worrying about Zoe. "Go." Said Aneisha. "Find her. MI9 special forces will be here soon, we'll both be fine." She said, gesturing at me. I nodded, as Dan ran out of the room, and Stella entered. "Situation report." She said, looking at Aneisha.
"Zoe and Steinberg are missing, Dan's gone to find them. Tom and Frank are in the core attempting a shut down while Demi sits in the corner." Aneisha answered.
"Where's Frank's containment suit?" Stella asked.
"It's invisible, like a lot of things in there." I whispered.
"It needed two people but there was only one suit. Frank went in before any of us could stop him." Aneisha replied. I looked up just in time to see Stella enter the core."Stella!" Aneisha yelled, "Has everyone gone nuts today? Are you gonna go in there next Dems?"
"No way. I'm not that mad yet." I said, getting up, and wiping the tears from my eyes. I walked over to the surveillance screen, and watched. Eventually a message appeared on the main screen, informing us that the core had been shut down. Tom did it! I followed Aneisha into the core, and saw that my dad and Stella were both still alive, thank god. I flung my arms around my dad, whispering "Never do that to me again OK? You terrified me." When I pulled away, he nodded at me, and then I turned to Tom. I hugged him as well, before lightly kissing him. "My hero." I said, "Thank you for saving me hero." He smiled at me, and kissed my forehead.
"It was nothing." He replied, as Dan entered the core.
"Special Forces swept the building. There's no sign of Zoe and Steinberg anywhere." He said, clearly still upset.
"Dan it'll be OK, we'll find her. I promise." I said.
"Actually, I think I was wrong to trust Steinberg. I think he took Zoe. There's only one person who could've taught me how to shut down the reactor, and that's Steinberg. That means he was the online gamer I was playing." Tom said.
"He knew he wouldn't be shutting it down himself, he's been planning this escape all along!" Aneisha said.
"He played us like fools." I added.
"Can the three of you just shut up, we need to find Zoe." Dan said. "Frank use the genetic tracer, they can't have gotten far."
"I'm sorry Dan we can't. The other DNA matches make it impossible to find her, it'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack." My dad replied.
"What other DNA matches?" Aneisha asked.
"It seems Kloe wasn't Zoe's one and only twin." Stella said.
"There were over 80 others." My dad said.
"What? How can you have 80 twins?" Dan asked.
"She can't. There's something going on, we just don't know what." My dad replied.
"Will someone pull their finger out, and tell me how we get Zoe back?" Dan yelled. "Nothing?"
"Well, if he was playing me online, he had to have internet access. So if we can find his computer, then we can find out who he's been in contact with." Tom answered.
"Good idea, let's go." I said, as we all followed Tom out of the core.
After inspecting Steinberg's cell, we discovered that he had built a Odysseus computer, and that Zoe was still at the reactor. As we jumped out of the air vent, there was a loud cry of "Dan!" in a voice that sounded like Zoe's. Dan ran off to the left, while I jumped the balcony and landed in between 2 guards. You know, its times like this I miss Jamie. She was always better at fighting than me. Hell, even Patterson was better at fighting than me! As the guards circled me, I grabbed their heads, and banged them together, knocking them out. I then ran towards where I presumed all the action was happening, as it was where Dan had run to. I arrived, and saw that Zoe was being surrounded by a huge column of light, and that a glowing ball in a machine was surrounded by another column. "You're too late!" Zoe yelled, in a much deeper tone than her usual voice. "Help me!" The machine yelled in Zoe's voice.
"What is going on?" I yelled, joining Tom and Stella at a console.
"Long story." Stella said.
"We need to disconnect her!" Dan said.
"No! Don't touch the master! It'll overload the reactor!" Steinberg yelled, as Aneisha and I pulled wires out from the glowing ball machine.
"I hope this works." I murmured.
"It's not working!" Tom yelled. "Keep trying!"
"Are you serious? We've pulled basically every single wire out!" I replied. Aneisha took hold of the remaining wires, and pulled them out at the same time as Dan pulled the matching wires off Zoe's head. We raced to help Zoe out, as she said, "It's me. We're OK." I flung my arms around her, and said,
"Thank god you're OK. We were really worried. Dan especially." I smirked as Steinberg yelled,
"It's going to blow!" What again?
"He's right. Run!" Tom yelled. We all obeyed as a huge wall of fire followed us out the building. I made it just in time for the building to explode. What is it with me and exploding buildings? I sighed, and looked around, seeing Harry and Jamie stood in the forest. "Demi! We need you to come with us!" Jamie whispered.
"Why?" I asked.
"Amy's plan is escalating. She's firing up her machine now. Instead of waiting for you to be captured, she's plugging herself in. We need to go now. No time for goodbyes." Patterson explained. I nodded, and glanced up at my team on the hill, before joining Harry and Jamie, and running faster than I've ever run. Little did I know that this was going to be one of the last times I'd see my team.
AN: And I'm going to leave it there! I decided to do the ending to this episode in one giant chapter, cause I thought that'd be easier. Anyway, Hope you enjoyed! Next chapter will be the last chapter I've decided. So, thanks for reading, and I'll see you in the next one!
