Sitting on the corner of her bed, Bulma plopped backward onto her mattress, her hair splayed out around her head, and let out a deep sigh. Oh Goku… She had never felt so excited. She was positively giddy. All of the thoughts of her life outside of the private world she shared with Goku had left her mind. He's going to be with me! Honestly, she couldn't bear the thought of anyone else in her life since Goku stepped through her bedroom door on the spaceship. His early morning visit had done more than reinforce that thought, it had solidified it.
Bulma stayed in bed, staring at the ceiling until the sun was high in the sky, and her daydreams were interrupted.
Knock knock knock at her door.
"Oh Bulma, sweetie. Are you ready to wake up? Breakfast is ready!" Her mothers cheerful voice sounded from beyond the quiet bedroom.
Bulma sat up and smoothed her cerulean hair. "Yeah mom. I'll be out in a second." She listened to the scuffle of feet as her mother walked away. After silence fell, she got dressed and pulled her hair up into a high ponytail, opened the door and met her parents.
"Yamcha has been calling for you all morning" Bulma's mom chimed absentmindedly.
"Oh ok" Bulma responded. She didn't really want to talk to Yamcha, but she knew it had to be done. She felt a little anxious at the thought of calling him back, but decided she would do so after she ate and changed.
Bulma ate quickly as she watched her mother search for their cat, and walked up to her room without a word when she was finished. She changed into a pair of yellow capris and a red top before grabbing the phone to call Yamcha.
The phone rang twice before he answered, "Hi, Bulma?" he sounded excited.
"Hey Yamcha, we need to talk." He was silent for a moment, before responding in a more somber tone.
"Uh, okay. Want me to come over?"
"Mhmm." She answered curtly and then they hung up their phones. It wouldn't take Yamcha too long to get there, so Bulma decided to go out into the yard to wait for him. It was a nice and sunny day, with a light breeze. She wondered idly what Goku was doing. There were only two more days until the wedding, so he didn't have a lot of time to end things with ChiChi. Bulma felt a twinge of guilt at the thought. Poor ChiChi… I didn't want to hurt her….
It was true. Bulma hadn't wanted to cause ChiChi any pain. To be honest, Bulma had always kind of figured that her marriage to Goku would fall through much sooner than this. They were so young when it was decided, there was a good chance that it wouldn't work out the way they'd wanted. If that had been the case, Bulma wouldn't feel like a homewrecker now.
There wasn't much time to think about this, because Yamcha had arrived, landing softly near where Bulma sat waiting. "How are you?" He asked, kissing her swiftly on the forehead before sitting opposite her.
"I'm ok. How about you?" She felt more awkward now that he was here. She suddenly felt a little foolish. What if Goku wasn't able to call things off with ChiChi? What if he couldn't go through with it? Or if he did, would it look suspicious for them both the exit their relationships at the same time? How would it affect their friends?
Her thoughts drowned out Yamcha's answer, and when she realized there had already been a few seconds of awkward silence. She could see on his face that he was nervous, clearly expecting the worst.
Bulma reached across the table and held his hand. "Yamcha, I really care about you, you know?"
"I care about you too, Bulma. What's this about?" Yamcha rubbed his neck with his free hand.
"I just… I don't really want to be in a relationship right now. I wanted to take some time to myself." She watched the expression on Yamcha's face change.
First he looked confused, and then a little sad. But faster than Bulma had expected, he grinned at her. "You know, I was thinking the same thing, with you being gone all that time." He stood, still smiling. It was no big deal, to him.
"Oh." Bulma was a little taken aback by how well Yamcha seemed to have handled the news. "Well, that's great!" She smiled back at him and stood as well. "I'm so relieved." Yamcha nodded.
"Well, I'm gonna take off Bulma. I'll see you around." Yamcha responded cheerfully before flying away. Once he was sure Bulma wouldn't notice, the smile left his face and was replaced by a confused scowl..
That was so easy! Bulma felt immense relief now that she had broken up with Yamcha, and he had taken it so well. In any other circumstances, she would have been upset that he wanted to break things off with her as well. But that was before. She couldn't even concentrate on anything but how happy she was. A truly selfish moment, but she couldn't turn back now. In the back of her mind, she figured that maybe he was just putting on a happy face, but she couldn't prove that.
