Reuben woke up with a start.
He had been dreaming of the final moments of the last video he watched , when Kyouko was struggling to get Makoto to the infirmary .It was in moments like this that he was grateful for being put on study leave the day before. Now, he could just alternate his time between studying, exams, the Bird House and the videos. Especially the videos. Ever since he had met Kimiko, the possibility those videos were real had been haunting him, and the effects showed.
He was due to meet with Kimiko and Thomas for the last minute biology revision crash-course tomorrow, and he was agonising over how to ask Kimiko if she was related to Arisa. How would he explain how he knew Arisa if they were related? He couldn't go freaking her out for no reason if it turned out there was nothing to this. Not to mention the small detail of not wanting to get Thomas involved. They might have been good friends, but this was too serious for an eternal joker like Thomas.
As he was mulling all of this over, he remembered that he had saved a screenshot of Arisa, and that he had a picture of Kimiko from when he had added her number to his phone's list of contacts. It was then he knew what he had to do.
Turning on his desk lamp so that he would attract any attention if anyone else woke up in the night, he quietly turned on the computer, attached his phone to it , and carefully printed out the two pictures. Then, he located post-it notes, a marker pen, a length of string, scissors and some thumb tacks, and took all these to the empty pin board on the wall opposite his bed. Then, he stuck the two pictures up with thumb tacks, cut the string and tied it between the two thumb tacks. After this, he picked up the marker pen and scrawled a few words onto a post-it note, which he then stuck onto the pin board, directly underneath the string.
When he was finished, he stepped back. It was certainly easier being able to visualise his suspicions like this. If it turned out that there was something to this, he would need to be able to keep track of it all.
He was putting back the rest of the other items when he noticed his computer was still on.
Should I…?
He didn't even need to ask himself that question. As soon as everything was tidy, he sat at the computer and pulled up the website to watch the next video.
It started almost where it had stopped. Kosuke had taken Makoto from Kyouko, and was dealing with him. Occasionally, he would call to Kyouko to hand something to him, which she did silently without saying a word. She looked scared, but in typical Kyouko style, she was doing her best despite that. Reuben could also hear the corpse discovery announcement being made by Monobear, but Kosuke and Kyouko weren't paying attention.
All of a sudden, chaos entered the infirmary in the form of Akihito.
"Didn't you hear?Toar-kun's dead!" he said, out of breath. Kosuke and Kyouko simply stared at him.
It was then Akihito noticed that all was not well.
"Oh. Man. Is that Naegi-kun?"
"It is. You said Toar-kun is dead?" Kyouko replied. "I think I heard an announcement…" Apparently she was paying attention.
"He is. You did! In the storeroom, head all mashed up….and now Naegi-kun…dammit!" Akihito rushed out again, presumably to tell everyone about Makoto. Reuben had a feeling that Akihito hadn't noticed that Makoto was actually alive.
Kosuke turned back, and after a few more minutes stepped back.
"I've given him a blood transfusion, and hooked him up to an IV. I think I've got him out of the worst, but he's lost a lot of blood, so he might not make it. "
"I see." Kyouko got up from where she had been sitting, and walked over to where Makoto was sleeping. Kosuke had taken his hoodie and blazer off, and the wound was hidden under thick plasters and bandages. He still looked very pale, but at least it was clear that he was alive.
Akihito returned (more quietly this time), with Janus , Suzu , Shika and Akaya.
Janus breathed a sigh of relief.
"Oh thank goodness, he's merely in the arms of Morpheus!"
What?
Janus didn't seem to notice the weirdness of what he said. Turning to Kyouko, he asked.
"Are you OK?"
"Yeah…yeah, I'm fine. Where are the others?"
"Watari-kun told them about Naegi-kun, and then left them all to investigate Toar-kun's death. " Shika explained.
"Yeah, I've got Kasuragi-san to sketch the scene and make notes. " Akihito said.
Kyouko nodded. "Good. "
"Will we need to do the same for Naegi-kun?" Shika asked.
"He isn't dead!" Janus said.
"We're considering this an attempted murder, so please proceed as normal. " Monobear appeared out of nowhere, and disappeared as soon as the sentence finished.
"Well, that answers the question." Kosuke said dryly.
"Kirigiri-san, do you think you could tell us what happened?" Akaya asked quietly.
"I'll take you there. " Kyouko responded, taking one last look at Makoto before leaving the room with Akaya, Akihito and Shika.
The scene changed to show what was happening with Afar. Arisa seemed to be having a bad flashback, but she assisted Dai in examining the body. Occasionally, one of them would point something out to Emi, who drew it. Nanako was watching them from a distance, a look of fear on her face. Reuben wondered what that was about. Eirik and Chihiro appeared to be talking about something, with Mirai pestering them. Eventually, those three left.
The focus went back to Arisa, who was avoiding looking at Afar's head wound (which wasn't nearly as bloody as Kevin's), instead choosing to rifle through the random piles of junk which had fallen out of his jumpsuit.
"Oh?" Arisa pulled out a crumpled piece of paper. She smoothed it out with her hand. Reuben didn't expect Arisa to have noticed the paper, but he supposed that it did stand out from microwaves and tennis balls.
"It's somebody's secret!" she showed it to Dai.
He took it from her.
"And so it is. There doesn't seem to be a way of identifying it though."
"I know, right?! There are only two words there!" she said.
"Erm…that's a name." he pointed out.
Arisa pouted.
"Well, whatever! It's not like anyone here goes by that name. "
At that point, the scene changed again, to the Laundry room. The inexplicable table was upturned, and there were blood spatters on the floor. The washing machines were silent, with clothes inside waiting for someone to take them out. Kyouko was explaining what had happened with
"I was walking past, with the intention of going to Naegi-kun's room. I wanted to talk to him. "
"About what?" Akaya asked.
"Nothing important. " Kyouko went slightly pink. Reuben suspected it was something to do with the fact that they had swapped secrets earlier. "Anyway, when I had walked past, I got the feeling that something was wrong, so I opened the door…" Kyouko looked uncomfortable. Clearly, she was more used to taking testimonies rather than giving them.
"I don't think you need to say anything more." Akaya said soothingly. "I think we can infer what had happened. "
"There doesn't seem to be anything here…" Shika said. "It's as if the killer came in, attacked Naegi-kun and just left. "
"Professional hit. " Kyouko said, as if summarising.
Eh? I'm pretty sure nobody here is an SDHSL assassin…
Luckily for him, Kyouko went on to explain.
"I don't mean the person actually is a secret assassin. It's just that this wasn't personal. At all. To the killer, Naegi-kun was business. Nothing more. "Kyouko gritted her teeth, and her hand curled into a fist.
"Anyway, I'm going to go see what is up with Toar-kun. I might send Kasuragi-san over to sketch this scene. Do you think the two of you could stay here to help?"
"Sure, sure! Just go and do your super detective awesomeness, Okay?" Shika gave Kyouko a thumbs-up as she left.
The scene changed again, to show Mirai darting in and out of dorm rooms, despite the fact they should've been locked. There didn't seem to be any pattern to what she was doing, until she went into one room and didn't come out for a long time. Unfortunately, the shot didn't allow him to see whose room Mirai had gone into.
Eventually, she came out. But this time, she was putting something into her pocket, and looking around furtively. Chihiro and Eirik came down the corridor and Mirai ran to show them what she had found. The angle the scene was being shot from meant that Mirai's back was to the screen and so the object was obscured. But Reuben saw enough to know that the object was relatively small and shiny, much like a knife.
Eirik's reaction was to voice concern that Mirai would hurt herself, and to insist that he take the object. Mirai refused, putting her find carefully in her pocket again. Then Chihiro told her to make sure that she bought this up during the trial, as it could be important. Mirai rolled her eyes in response, but seemed like she was agreeing anyway. Then, the scene switched back to the infirmary, where Makoto was (hopefully) recovering.
Kosuke was sitting at his desk, writing something down.
"What are you doing?" Janus asked.
"Writing a report on Naegi-kun's case. It'll form part of his medical records, which I intend on keeping here. "
"Medical…records?" Reuben was just as puzzled as Janus.
"It's good practise. " Kosuke said shortly, before going back to what he was doing.
Suzu rang her bell, and Janus went over to her.
"What's wrong?" he asked. She wrote something in her notebook. Janus attempted to puzzle it out.
"Key…gone….not here….?" Janus peered at the writing in confusion. Then it hit him.
"Oh!CRAP!"
Kosuke turned and glared irritably.
"What?"
"I think we've just found a motive for the attack on Naegi-san."
"Oh?"
"He was responsible for the garbage room key, and yet it isn't on his person."
"Ah. Somebody should probably tell Kirigiri-san that."
"I'll do that! " Akihito and Shika came in.
"We just came to see how Naegi-kun's doing. " Shika explained.
Kosuke didn't look up, but he rattled off a few sentences, the summary of them being that Makoto was, for the most part, okay, but things were still fragile.
"Okay. What should I relay to Kirigiri-san? She's investigating Toar-kun at the moment, and Kiyomizu-san is helping her."
"Tell her that whoever attacked him probably did so with the purpose of getting the garbage room key. " Janus said.
"Okay. Let's go then, Sayuri-san." Akihito replied.
Shika shook her head.
"Hold on. " She unzipped her hoodie a fraction, and then tugged her bright orange scarf off. Then, she handed it to Kosuke.
"Naegi-kun'll be pretty scarred, right? Give this to him; he can wear it if he wants to cover the scar up. "
Kosuke looked at doubtfully. Shika glared.
"What? It's unisex!" she protested. Kosuke grinned faintly, and folded the scarf and left it on the desk.
"I'll give it to him." He said.
"Good!" with that, Shika and Akihito left, and the scene showed them walking down to the first floor storeroom. Nanako and Arisa had long since left, but Dai was still there with Kyouko and Akaya. He explained that Emi had long since finished her sketches, and was now looking for any potential clues to either of the incidents with the help of Arisa and Nanako.
Somehow, Reuben doubted that Nanako'd actually be of any use. Arisa wouldn't be much better , but she'd try. He let it go.
"Then I'll go help too!" Shika left immediately.
Akihito explained everything that Kosuke and Janus had said briefly. With every word , Kyouko seemed to fold back into herself ,albeit almost imperceptibly .
"Ah. I should have known. "she said eventually.
"Known what? That some psycho would attack him to get the key so he could dispose of the evidence relating to Toar-kun?" Dai raised an eyebrow at Akihito's outburst, as though it was amusing. Now he thought about it, that faintly amused look seemed to be Dai's permanent facial expression.
Kyouko shook her head.
"Why're you shaking your head like that?" Akihito demanded.
"This isn't what you think it is. "She said.
"Oh?" Dai asked neutrally.
"No. This isn't. Naegi-kun was attacked for the key, but that person didn't use it to dispose of the evidence here. More likely, they used it to dispose of any evidence relating to Naegi-kun. "
Akihito's mouth fell open "Wait…do you mean…"
"Yes. We're dealing with two separate killers this time. "
And this is why the case is a double whammy ^^.
Anyway, as usual , I have no idea how many parts this'll take , considering that I need to incorporate Reuben's side of things too.
Please leave feedback!
