Monobear jumped up and down in indignation on his throne at Shika's point.
"OOH, YOU BASTARDS!How could you forget my carefully prepared information? How could you….." He sat back down when everyone ignored him (again).
Eirik took out his ElectroID and looked at the files, carefully looking for time of death.
Afar Toar died at 2:25 this afternoon, Makoto Naegi was attacked at 3."
"Wait, why is there a file for Naegi-kun?" Shika asked.
"BECAUUUSE, YOU DUMMY, I TOLD YOU that he be treated as a murder!"
Clearly, someone has issues…
"Okay, fine! Don't yell! And get a grammar check!"
"Hey, my grammar is impeccable!" Monobear protested.
"Oh for crying out loud, can we get back to what's relevant, please?" Kyouko's voice didn't get louder, but she was clearly annoyed.
"Sorry, Kirigiri-san." Shika apologised.
"Its fine." Kyouko said. "So, that would prove that the two are even less connected .As Toar-kun's case comes first, let's go over the evidence relating to him, first. "
"His head was gross." Nanako said.
"That isn't helpful." Eirik said bluntly.
"It's true!" she said. Eirik merely rolled his eyes.
"Well, she's right about his head being bashed in. There was a little blood, which had dried over the wound somewhat, but that, to be honest, was the only 'gross' aspect of it. "Dai said. "I couldn't tell what had been used on him, but it's safe to say that it was a bat of some sort, something heavy. Not that I'd know, I'm no detective. "
I feel like I know who his killer is. But I can't figure out why! Reuben shook his head in frustration and continued watching.
"No, no, you're right. " Kyouko said encouragingly. Emi held up the pictures she'd sketched of Afar and the surrounding scene, as if to illustrate Dai's point.
"We couldn't find much else, to be honest. He looked as if he'd been taken by surprise, which fits in with your theory, I guess. And there was the issue of the secret. "
"Ah. Yes. "
"Did someone try to steal his secret then?" Shika asked.
"No. It wasn't his. "Kyouko said. "I later managed to find his one, still in the envelope. I took a look at it, and it really isn't anything relevant. "
So he didn't fight back after someone stole his secret?"
"Clearly not." Emi said drily.
"It is more likely he took someone else's secret, and they killed him trying to get it back. " Kyouko explained. She pulled out the evidence bag containing the secret.
"Why would he do that?" Nanako asked "That's too weird. He was such a weirdo, wasn't he? "
Even for Nanako, that was crass. Reuben raised an eyebrow, and then almost laughed when Kyouko gave Nanako a similar look.
"It's a name, isn't it? I remember seeing it. It was a girl's name?" Arisa said hopefully.
"That's a good memory you have." Dai said.
"Thanks."
"It is a girl's name. Kami Tarumi, to be specific." Akaya said quietly.
"Who's that?" Nanako asked, looking confused.
"Well, I think if we find out that, we'll have the answer as to who killed Toar-kun." Kyouko said.
"Doesn't the paper say anything else?" Eirik asked.
"No. Clearly, whoever this was intended for would know exactly who this person is. "
"But how did Toar-kun get ahold of it?" Janus wondered "And why, exactly, would he be interested in someone's secrets? He didn't strike me as the type of person to-"
Janus was interrupted by Suzu ringing her bell urgently.
"Oh, yeah. Suzu noticed something odd about the secret earlier. "He said.
"Ah. Yes. Here." Kyouko tossed the small evidence bag at Suzu, who put out a hand and caught it neatly. "Try and demonstrate what you mean. "
Suzu nodded, and took out another, similar sized piece of paper. Then, she crumpled it in her fist. Once this was done, she strengthened it out, and took the paper that which had the secret on it out, holding them side by side.
"What are you trying to show us?" Akihito asked.
She sighed, and got Janus to hold the two pieces of paper. Then she took out her notebook, and rather than writing something, she flipped back to something she had written earlier. Although the subtitles confirmed this, Reuben remembered she had written the word 'folds.' Unfortunately, it was at this point he realised it wouldn't be long until he had to pick up Matilda, so with a heavy feeling in his gut, he shut down the computer.
…
He enjoyed listening to his cheerful little sister chatter on and on about her day, but even as they got home and he fixed a snack for them, his mind was elsewhere.
Eventually, Megan and his mother came home, so Reuben was able to escape. But when he got upstairs, he didn't feel able to simply start watching again.
He sighed, and then caught sight of his pin board, and the pictures of Kimiko and Arisa. It was then he figured what to do. After replacing the post-it note with one that confirmed the sibling connection, he went on the computer and opened up a search engine on the internet.
Now, who should I search for…?
He stretched lazily, and then decided on Nanako. Considering she was an actress, it was possible she'd turn up on the internet. And he was right, noticing her name on various cast lists for some movies, a few he'd even heard of. There were also lots of pictures of her, either in movie context or at premieres.
Then, he thought long and hard about who to search next. Janus Abandonato was the obvious choice, and he too appeared in cast lists for various theater productions. As with Nanako, there were pictures to accompany these. Many pictures. The only difference was that Reuben hadn't seen any of them. It amused him to see that Janus had been in Romeo and Juliet many, many times. The guy must be sick of the play.
He searched Eirik's name next, and sure enough, he appeared, although only occasionally, listed as a translator of novels, comics and the like.
Entering "Emi Kasuragi" resulted in something surprising for Reuben. Her name, and the blogs to go with them, were everywhere. He had read many of them, and a few sites were ones he visited regularly. To think that he was now watching the girl who wrote these things battle in a life-or-death situation just drove home how real this actually was, and this made him feel helpless. Not to mention faintly nauseous.
Time to move on.
But the most surprising information was related to Kyouko Kirigiri. Although Kyouko herself didn't come up, there were a number of articles relating to a Jin Kirigiri. All of them stated that he was the principal of Hope's Peak since its opening in 2005, and a few mentioned he had been a detective before that. The name was coincidental enough, but the pictures that accompanied some of the articles showed a man with purple hair and eyes (albeit a bit darker), and an intense look similar to Kyouko's. Which would mean that they were father and daughter. This would mean that Kyouko's father was the principal of the school the students were now in. The school both Kimiko and Arisa had attended.
So where the hell was he? Was he really responsible for all this? Who would do such a thing to their daughter?
He set to work copy-pasting and printing out everything he had found as quickly as possible. Then, he went straight to his pin board and set about cutting and pinning things up. Soon, there were bits of string, post- it notes and various thumbtacks in his general vicinity.
At one point, Megan came in, holding a magazine article.
"OMG, what are you? A madman?" she looked at the mess with bug-eyes.
Reuben pulled a face in response.
"Relax. It's just a bit of fun. You need a little fun sometimes. "Even as he said it, he knew he was lying, just a bit.
"Whatever. Look, I don't know if this'll just make you even more of a weirdo, but remember when I said that girl in your weird video was familiar?"
Reuben had to think. "Yes."
"Well, her sister is a model. Well, I'm guessing it is her sister cos they look alike, almost. Miss Humm gave this to me a few weeks ago. You know her, the teacher who teaches A level Photography?"
Reuben did know her, as a few people in his History class took Photography. He nodded for her to go on.
"Anyway, it's in Japanese or whatever, so she gave me a few translation notes. This article was from a few years ago."
"And you are giving it to me because…?"
"The video, dumbass."
"Don't call me a dumbass. But thanks, Megs."
"Whatever. " With that, Megan left.
Reuben looked at the article. It showed a full length image of two models together. One was clearly related to Suzu, for although she had brown hair and a somewhat paler complexion than Suzu's, they had a similar appearance. The other girl was pale with thick pinkish hair gathered into two ponytails, and very wide blue eyes. There was something devious about the look in her eyes, and he found it hard to move his gaze away from them. He went to skim over the translation notes, and discovered that Suzu's sister was called Shiori, and the other girl went by the name of Junko Enoshima. He also learnt that they were friends. He pinned these up too, and decided that the other information wouldn't be that relevant, as this was a fashion magazine.
Eventually, he looked at the clock.
I have exams. The first one is in 4 days. I really should study.
So although he didn't really want to, after clearing up , he went to his desk and cracked open the textbooks. And while he did, the magazine photo of Junko Enoshima stared at him with those captivating eyes.
…
Eventually, he decided that he had done enough work for the day, and went straight back to the video.
As Janus held the papers, Suzu turned over the pages, and then wrote something else. Holding it up, she pointed to the paper.
"Look closely at the creases, and then at the folds." Eirik read out. Everyone (Reuben included) obliged, and almost everyone was puzzled.
Akaya and Kyouko however, looked more thoughtful than puzzled. It was Akaya who spoke up.
"I think I know what you are talking about. Those folds, right there." She pointed to the sheet with the name written on it. Sure enough, now Reuben took a proper look, as well as the usual creases from being crumpled, there were lines that cut through all of these.
Lines that were placed too deliberately to simply be a result of crushing it in the hand.
Suzu nodded in agreement with Akaya.
"But does that mean anything, really?" Akihito asked.
Suzu nodded again. She flipped a page in her notebook, and wrote something else.
"I think it is origami. " Eirik read out.
"Origami?" Arisa asked. "And how, exactly does that help us?"
"It could, I think." Already Kyouko appeared to be making connections in her mind. "I think we have enough here to keep in mind for now. I think now…now we should…"
"Talk about Naegi-kun." Janus finished for her. Kyouko shot him a grateful look. Reuben sympathised for her. This whole thing must have been harder for her than she'd let on.
"There honestly isn't much to talk about regarding that though, wasn't the scene cleared?" Dai asked.
"You are right, to an extent, but if I recall, there were a few things. For one, there is a motive. "Kyouko said.
"There was?" Dai asked.
"Whoever it was took the garbage room key. " Janus said. "Possibly to get rid of evidence."
Nanako's mouth fell open.
"The KEY?" Then, she covered her mouth in shock. Clearly, she hadn't wanted to let that slip. Luckily for her, nobody seemed to notice. Instead, their attention was focused on Emi.
"Tch!" Emi looked annoyed, and very tired. "C'mon! Really? If you wanted to get rid of evidence, wouldn't you just turn the table up and clean the stains?" she flipped through her sketchbook and showed the corresponding pictures.
"Oohhhhhh…" Shika breathed.
"That's right. The scene did show signs of a struggle…" Akaya said "That table isn't very steady in the first place but it is heavy to lift up alone. " Akaya didn't bother to elaborate, and so everyone seemed a bit baffled. Reuben, however, knew what she was on about this time, and grinned when Kyouko confirmed this by saying.
"So you are suggesting the person is someone who isn't very strong. Or at the very least not of a sturdy build."
"Yes." Akaya nodded. "Obviously someone who is generally delicate, such as Fujisaki-san or Suzu-Chan, wouldn't have been able to do this. But the person wouldn't have to be particularly…fit , as such."
"But you said that the guy or gal or whatever knew what they were doing!" Shika protested.
Kyouko rolled her eyes slightly.
"Naegi-kun wasn't exactly expecting anyone to attack. Sure there may have been a struggle, but that would be more to panic. Strength wasn't needed in this case, as there was no need to restrain him."
"OH. Never mind." Shika pulled a face.
"Tamuro-san, why did you seem so surprised earlier?" Dai said suddenly.
"Eh?" Nanako tried to fake confusion. Given the fact she was an actress, this was actually quite convincing, but nobody was buying it.
"When we said that someone took the key off Naegi-kun."
"Ah….well, I wanted to put my secret through the burny thingy."
"You mean the incinerator."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Anyway, that's in the garbage room, and so I decided to ask Naegi if I could borrow key."
"DANG IT! Does that mean you killed him when he refused?" Shika asked.
"Eh? You stupid or something? Of course not!"
"She didn't." Kyouko said. "Like I said before, this is too professional. No offence, Tamuro-san, but this is something you would not have been able to pull off."
"Exactly what she said." Nanako paused "Whatever that meant. In any case, I never got to him because Watari was running around yelling about Toar, so I got distracted. I just threw it away in the end. "
"In other words, she wasn't responsible for Naegi-kun's attack? " Dai asked.
Kyouko nodded.
"Oh, and also-hey, what's up, Fujisaki-san?" Emi seemed as if she was about to say something, but then noticed that Chihiro looked nervous, as if she wanted to say something.
"I…um. I think I know what 'Kami Tarumi' was folded into. I know it is off topic but…."
"No, no, this will be interesting." Dai said. Suzu took a page out of her notebook, ripped it down to size, and handed it to Chihiro, who slowly and hesitantly started working on it.
Reuben watched with bated breath as the model slowly formed in the girl's hand. Eventually, she finished and held it out.
It was a bird. An origami bird.
I think the grammar joke is getting old now. I will try to find better jokes later.
In any case, from this, one culprit should be clear. This person will, however be officially revealed either next chapter or the one after. The same goes for the other culprit.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please leave feedback!
