Extract from an email sent to Anna Brooks from Daisuke Hamasaki:

I looked at that video you sent me. You're right, it is disturbing. But I'm not so sure that it's just a prank. I mean, have you actually heard from Janus? Apart from a few letters? I initially thought he just didn't want his old Nonno on his back all the time, but now I've seen this, I feel there is more to it. It's probably nothing, but I think it's time to head back to my home country for a week or so.

She hadn't recognised his name when she'd received the letter. There was no reason for her to do so. All she needed to remember about those times was that her sister was dead, and that she had been eight years old. Eight.

But somehow, when she saw him at the entrance ceremony, acting as if he did not know what this place was, what it had been, it made her blood boil more than it had done already. But she said nothing. Instead, she smiled and laughed and made a good impression. As per her plan.

A plan which was now not enough. Now that she has remembered him, he had to be part of it too. He had to pay.

During her first lesson, she pretended to be attentive while thinking of what to do to him .Turning over all possibilities in her head. Giving in to the delicious darkness of it all. Despair really was a wonderful thing. It really was. So much creativity, so much opportunity. She felt as if her head could burst from all of it, in the best possible way.

By the time the lesson was over, she had her answer.

He would have to die too.

Observations

January 6th, 2014

First day at Hope's Peak. There are 18 students in my class, and we are the only class this year. This is not so unusual. The year group that just left only had one class, and the year after the school opened there was one class. The two years above us have 2 classes each.

I saw him today, as he led the entrance ceremony. He didn't seem to notice me. I made no effort to approach him. There is time for that later.

January 8th, 2014

I have been too busy exploring the school to go and confront him. The school is vast, with many facilities. Clearly, the school has no money worries.

January 9th, 2014

My class seems to consist of some good people. Plenty of personalities, but that is to be expected. That doesn't mean I intend to get too close to any of them, but I do certainly think I will enjoy my time here, being part of this class.

January 15th, 2014

Yesterday, he approached me. It was after class, and he invited me to his office. As we were in the presence of other students at the time, he simply said he wanted to talk to me about what my abilities could offer the school, which sounds strange but legitimate enough.

I am going to see him now. I wonder whether he has recognised his own daughter.

Later in the day, January 15th, 2014

Perhaps I underestimated him. When I closed the door of his office behind me, he called me 'Kyou-Chan', the way I remember him doing so. I did not expect that. I do not know how I feel about this.

We talked of other things too, and surprisingly, he really does want to use my skills to better the school. To covertly clamp down on the minor crimes that add up and become more than nuisances. It is something I am up for.

January 17th, 2014

Starting my first job today, investigating the source of amphetamines being sold amongst the third-years. Basic stuff. But still satisfying.

January 20th, 2014

Case solved.

January 21st, 2014

Naegi-kun called me a genius. I disagree, but I appreciate the sentiment in the comment. He seems genuine. In time, I may consider him a friend. Kiyomizu-san also seems like someone I would be friends with someday.

January 23rd, 2014

Ishi-san's sister came to visit today. I found that strange, until he told me that former students tend to visit. Apparently Kimiko Ishi had the title of SDHSL Biologist. Ishi-san herself is a mathematician. Very different, but they get on well.

Still, I wonder how many other former students will visit this year?

February 2nd, 2014

Solved a 'theft' in class today. Sayuri-san's cat-face purse disappeared, but it turns out our homeroom teacher, Hanamoto-sensei has one just like it. The conclusion that I came to was that Sayuri-san left the purse in the classroom, and as Hanamoto sensei had actually lost hers a few days ago, she came to the conclusion that this was her one. It was quite amusing, actually.

February 3rd, 2014

I am definitely making friends.

February 15th, 2014

It is a slow process, but we are coming to terms with each other. We both have a lot of forgiving to do, but it is happening. I suppose that is the way it is with family.

February 20th, 2014

Apparently the model Junko Enoshima is coming to visit the school soon. Everyone is excited about it. Apparently she was one of the first students in the school when it opened in 2005. Obviously, Father is over the moon about her visit.

February 23rd, 2014

She is here. As vivacious, fun, pretty and glamorous as she is in all the magazines and such. But I do not like her.

February 27th, 2014

She is still here. I find her annoying. Why is she here?

March 3rd, 2014

Petty annoyances aside, Junko Enoshima should not be here. Her schedule is supposed to be busy, given her career. So why…? I do not think Father will listen to my concerns, so I will have to look into this in my own time.

March 5th, 2014

Despair is coming. Those are the rumours floating around the school. But what does it mean?

Later in the day, March 5th, 2014.

I am an idiot. The rumours came with her. So the question now is-what is the connection? She seems as cheerful as ever, but I am convinced it is a façade.

March 6th, 2014.

She has left, and the rumours remain. Father remains clueless. Panic is spreading and we are all helpless.

I have not been able to find much, but I have noticed that Junko Enoshima was particularly interested in us first-year students. Whatever she is planning, it is bad. If I don't find out soon, I think we will all die.

March 7th , 2014

Just been looking up the history of the school, and the grounds in general. It has all come together now. What I don't understand is how Father did not recognise her. He had actually been telling me little bits about the case, about how that set into motion the things that happened when Mum died.

I guess it doesn't matter now. I must go and find him, tell him about this, before it is too late.

March 9th, 2014

I have been hiding here for over a day. I am scared for my life. The rumours were true, but not accurate. Despair is already here. It has been for 16 years.

March 10th , 2014

I ventured out briefly, and looked for Naegi-kun and the others. I got some food, and returned here. Someone has put up steel plates on the window. I think it is likely it was one of the others-the despair rumours were effective in instilling fear. How long will I need to wait? Hopefully not long, as I intend to mak-

They sit facing each other across the table in the interrogation room. Friends for so long, there is now too much hanging in the balance.

He refuses to believe his friend could have covered up such a horrific crime, especially involving such a revered institution. But he knows it needs investigating.

"I won't arrest you now, Hisanuma. "He says eventually "But no falling off the grid. "

"I won't" is Hisanuma's weary reply. "But I need to get back, my sis-"

"Go, just go. But at some point you're going have to face the consequences, even if we have known each other for a while now."

Ichiro doesn't reply as he leaves. Kitamura sits there for a moment head in hands, then gets up and goes to his office. He needs some headspace.

When he gets there, he sits heavily in his chair and stares at the notes he made while interrogating Hisanuma. The content is ringing a bell, but he can't for the life of him remember. He stares for ages, his mind turning over news stories and old case files. But nothing comes up.

When someone knocks at his door, he nearly jumps out of his skin.

"What?!" he asks irritably.

The door opens, and Officer Takagi peers around.

"You have guests, detective. "He says meekly, clearly surprised at his colleague's mood, before disappearing. Three people step into the room. One is an old man with a sharp dress sense and a kind look. The second person is a young woman wearing pink.

The third person is Byakuya Togami. He, like the other two people, has a look of determination and exhaustion on his face.

Kitamura is just getting ready to rant at Togami about how his status doesn't merit wasting police time when something falls into place. He flicks through his notebooks and remembers everything Togami has been pestering the station about.

Smiling at the three, he gets up and speaks.

"If you're here about what I think you're here about, then I am pleased to say that as we have some evidence, the investigation is now open. This will stop."

Yours Sincerely,

As you may have noticed, this is the final evidence collection. I genuinely have nothing else to put into any other evidence collections. I think by now, the pieces should be falling into place as to what happened. So I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
