You get a second chapter! To my guests who reviewed, thank you so much! I''m glad you appreciate Hollyleaf as much as I do, but she is not the only main character. Keep reading for find out! And for the other guest, AshxThorn can be what you make of it. I originally had no clue as to why they turned out like this but their behavior is better explained by Ivypaw in this chapter.
It took a while for all the cats involved to return to camp, but when they did, Firestar called the meeting. He made sure to include Dovepaw and Ivypaw, so they could see who they would be working with, but vowed in light of Dovepaw's nerves, to speak with the pair separately.
"Okay, so apparently there have been some new developments to help us along with figuring out these prophecies. Dovepaw, is it true that you can hear and see things that are far away?"
"Yes." Dovepaw choked out. Ivypaw pressed against her sister in a show of comfort. Firestar, taking note of this, loped over and laid in front of the apprentices.
"Dovepaw, I would like you to ignore everyone else except for me and Ivypaw. Can you do that?"
"I'm not helpless!" The grey she-cat objected.
"You're not, but there's no reason to be scared. I'm still a cat." He chuckled.
"But you're also the greatest leader in the history of the Clans!" Dovepaw squeaked. Firestar snorted and turned to the others.
"What nursery tales have these two been told, Whitewing? I doubt I'm that good at anything to be considered part of Clan history." He scoffed before turning back to the apprentices. "Now Sandstorm, her hunting skills are legendary. If she's willing she can tell you about how we helped a Clan stay afloat, but right now I need to know if it's okay for you to tell me what you told Lionblaze."
And here, Firestar could see what Jayfeather was talking about. The grey she-kit's shaking increased and she buried her nose into her sister's side.
"You don't have to say anything now, either of you. I just want to make sure you're okay with us knowing what's been happening to you. Ivypaw, would you be alright with telling us about your dreams?"
The grey, black, and white she-cat narrowed her navy blue eyes and stared at the ground.
"It's a dark place I go to, and the cats there aren't friendly. Are you sure we won't get in trouble?"
"I'm asking so you don't have to deal with this alone, because you're right. These cats are dangerous and they can hurt you. We want to protect you from them, but we have to know where you go, who these cats are, and what they do when you get to them."
"And we can tell you later?" Dovepaw asked, unfurling herself and staring at Firestar with wide green eyes.
"Yes, it can be to just me and your parents. The reason I asked you to be here right now is because these cats are all connected to your dreams of the dark cats and your senses. You're all part of something called a prophecy, a warning sent by StarClan to help us overcome obstacles in life."
"Is the prophecy very big?" Dovepaw wondered. Firestar hesitated and glanced back at their parents. Whitewing looked panicked, but Birchfall nodded his consent. They already knew more than they ever needed to. Knowing these prophecies might help.
"They usually come when the Clan is in great danger." The orange leader admitted softly.
"Danger!" Dovepaw yelped.
"What did he say?" Ivypaw hissed.
"The prophecies are to help cats get through danger."
"If that's the case then why not give us prophecies all the time?"
"Cats have to make their own decisions, Ivypaw." Whitewing informed her daughter. "StarClan can't interfere with everything or there would be no point to them. They help us with the things they know we can't handle, and let us deal with the things gs we know we can. Like dogs and greencough."
"So now what? All these cats are in the prophecy?" Dovepaw asked.
"Not all of them. Ruthen, the tortoiseshell closer to the entrance, is the one who received one of the prophecies we had."
"Like Jayfeather?"
"Yes." Firestar nodded. "How did you know that?"
"Well, he and Leafpool are the medicine cats, right? Why wouldn't StarClan talk to them the most?" Dovepaw reasoned. "Are you going to be a medicine cat, Ruthen?"
"I like helping Jayfeather and Leafpool, but I can fight just as well as my brother, Fallen. You'll need me to help protect the Clan when the time comes." The tortoiseshell meowed.
"Fallen is they grey tabby beside Ruthen. Stand up, Fallen, so they can see you better." Firestar ordered. "If if helps, you two can climb on my back and I'll stand up."
"Like a badger ride?!" Ivypaw squealed. "Whitewing, Birchfall, Firestar is giving us a badger ride!" She screeched. Dovepaw whined and put her paws to her ears. Ivypaw quieted instantly with a soft "Sorry!" but bounced in placed as Dovepaw padded up to Firestar.
"Are you sure?" She asked.
"I gave Squirrelflight and Leafpool badger rides all the time when they were younger. I'm sure I can handle a couple of apprentices." Firestar snorted playfully. Dovepaw scrambled onto his back and placed her paws on either side of his neck. Ivypaw followed and once they were both on, Firestar stood up. They made sure to keep their claws sheathed despite their surprise. It wouldn't do well to hurt another cat from your own Clan, especially not the leader!
"Wow!" Dovepaw gasped. "That's a lot of cats who know about this prophecy thing."
"Look, Dovepaw, it's Hollyleaf and Sandstorm and Squirrelflight and Ferncloud's brother! All the cats we talked about are here!"
"Yeah… and mom and dad are just sitting there like we're not all part of some legend! " Dovepaw snickered.
"I'm gonna talk to Hollyleaf and Sandstorm."
"Wait for me!" Dovepaw scrambled after her sister and they tumbled to the ground, managing to right themselves before they hit their heads. Firestar laughed.
"You could have asked me to let you down." He offered.
"But you're all awesome and every cat knows who you are and there are all sorts of stories-!"
"Like how Sandstorm taught an entire Clan how to hunt-!"
"And Hollyleaf took on a fox and a dog-!"
"And Ashfur- that is your name, right?" At the grey tom's nod, Ivypaw went on. "You and Breezepelt fight the dark cats! I've seen you, and you're really good at it! They can't get you down no matter what they try, and you fight like all of TigerClan! All swipe left and dodge right and- oof!" Ivypaw had started trying moves she'd seen and crashed to the ground, having tripped over her own tail.
"I'm glad you think so highly of me." Ashfur chuckled. "But I'm hardly as fierce as you think."
"Of course you are!" Ivypaw urged. "You can keep fighting because you have your golden friend."
"Thornclaw?"
"Hmm?" The golden tom glanced up to find his grey friend staring at him.
"What about Thornclaw, Ivypaw?" Hollyleaf wondered.
"Well, he's your anchor." She told Ashfur. Like Hollyleaf is Breezepelt's anchor and Dovepaw is mine and Whitewing was Birchfall's." Here, Dovepaw interceded.
"Well, not anymore because he only went twice before he figured out how bad they were and left." She assured them.
"An anchor is something or someone that keeps you attached to the Clans, they're the reason you don't join the dark cats permanently. Ashfur's connection to his anchor is pretty strong because Thornclaw won't let him go, but you have to keep in mind that they need you too. Ashfur… the dark cats are getting to you, aren't they? In your dreams?"
"How do you know that?" He asked softly.
"Well…"
"Firestar said we don't have to tell." Dovepaw reminded her sister.
"They deserve to know and I want them to hear it from me." Ivypaw muttered. The grey, black and white she-cat inhaled deeply and got to her paws.
"I can see how much the dark cats get to you because the spot on your chest is dark grey, almost completely black. Dovepaw says not everyone can see them, but I can. The color has to do with how much influence the dark cats have over you. Sometimes it changes with your mood, but most of the time but stays the same until you start seeing the dark cats."
"What color are the ones for normal cats?" Lionblaze wondered.
"Lighter than yours." Ivypaw sneered.
"What has gotten into you?" Whitewing demanded.
"He's Dovepaw's mentor. I go out and she's all excited about having the best fighter in the Clan, and when I come back she's basically torn herself apart because she told him and it turns out he was with them the entire time!" Ivypaw spat. "I don't care how light your patch is! You trained with them and I don't want you anywhere near Dovepaw!"
"And what about me?"
Birchfall stepped forward, eyes calm as he faced his daughters.
"I've trained with the dark cats. Do you not want me to be around?"
"You only went twice before you figured out they were tricking you. Same with Breezepelt."
"What about me?" Ashfur asked.
"You were possessed by a dark cat and now they're haunting you. That's different. This mouse-brain went willingly every time. There's no reason he should even be here. If you like those fox-hearts so much then why don't you stay with them?"
"But Ivypaw, he's not with them anymore. Look at him. Does he seem like the kind of cat who would benefit from them? He's invincible, Ivypaw, and whether he trained with them if not doesn't matter, just like it doesn't for Birchfall and Breezepelt. The point is that he stopped, and he knows how to help other cats stop." Dovepaw informed her sister.
"Then why is his patch second to Ashfur's and why did you come back so upset?"
"Think about it, Ivypaw. Lionblaze is invincible, right? What if that doesn't happen with the dark cats? He probably stayed to learn how they were hurting him, how to avoid it, and left before he got tainted by the darkness."
"I almost didn't make it." Lionblaze admitted. I tried to kill a friend of mine in WindClan. Heathertail. She's Breezepelt's mate but she was my friend when we were apprentices. I didn't realize what was happening to me until my claws were at her throat. Tried to kill her mentor, too, when he knocked me away. That's what made me turn my back on them. I never meant to kill anyone. We're warriors, yes, but Clan cats don't kill without good reason. So while I was lucky that I recognized the influence before I got too far, Ivypaw is right. I was foolish enough to go looking for a fight and I got a lot more than I expected. But Dovepaw is right too, because I've spent the rest of my life so far making up for it. I don't know what you see, but hopefully I'm better than I was as an apprentice."
Ivypaw deliberated, glaring at the stone floor and shifting from paw to paw.
"Dovepaw has trouble breathing when she gets too scared or too excited. Don't overdo it."
"Thank you." Lionblaze murmured, touching his nose to hers.
"I didn't trust you at first because I didn't see your anchor, but it makes sense now. Your reason for turning against the dark cats is fear. You were scared of your potential, scared that you would end up like them. You don't have to be scared all the time, but fear is a good motivator." Ivypaw mused. "Not for Dovepaw." She snapped suddenly.
"I wouldn't dream of it." Lionblaze insisted.
"Okay, who's everyone else?"
"You've met Hollyleaf, Fallen, Ruthen, Breezepelt, you know of Heathertail and Crowfeather, her mentor, you know Squirrelflight and Sandstorm and I, you know Ashfur and Thornclaw, am I missing anyone?"
"I don't think so. I think I've seen Brambleclaw in my dreams before, but he had a lot more scars and he was a terrible cat, so maybe not…"
"Definitely not. No way is Brambleclaw that mean." Dovepaw insisted.
"So who was it?"
"My father's name is Tigerstar, and I look exactly like him." The deputy muttered darkly. Dovepaw wove through the group cats and came to stand before Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight.
"You're not, though. You're not anything like him. Your patch is a lot lighter than Lionblaze's."
"That's good to know." Squirrelflight purred and lead into her mate's side.
"I think we can call this meeting dismissed. Dovepaw, Ivypaw, your parents and I will get the full story from you later. Eat and rest for now. It's nearly sunset."
