A/N...

I just noticed, a lot of time passes in this one :P

Also, I wanted the Forsaken politics to be familiar yet strange. I've never seen a Forsaken group ever discuss politics in great detail, so we are in unknown waters here...

Warning: Use of language and more politics

"So, how is this going to work? Lilian asks Kalira and Borgan as they walk back to the church of Brill. It has been a week since the nominations and it is time for the election. Kalira looks over at Borgan as they walk. Even though he technically against them, he has been a great boon. His understanding of the inner Cult factions has helped Lilian and Kalira grasp a better view of the Cult.

"Voting in Forsaken society is both similar and different. Each member will stand and say the name of whom they wish to vote for. Each vote will be marked in a running tally. When everyone has voted, the tallies are counted up and we get the results," Borgan begins.

Lilian nods her head, "Alright. What happens if there is not a majority?"

"If a majority is not achieved, then there will be another week of campaigning followed by another day of elections," Borgan says to Lilian, "This will continue until a majority is achieved."

"So, wait," Kalira begins, "an election like this could continue for years?"

Borgan looks back at Kalira, nodding, "Yes, theoretically, Even though we are free-willed, most elections do not go on for that long; someone will drop out of the nominations."

"What happens then?" Lilian asks.

"When a Forsaken votes, they do not retain that vote; they give it to the nominee. The nominee may then do one of two options. They could drop out of the campaign and forfeit their votes to another nominee or drop out of the campaign and forfeit their votes to no one." Borgan says, motioning with his hands.

"Alright," Kalira begins, "So, if I were running and got some votes, I could then drop out and give the votes to Lilian without the members of the Forsaken causing a ruckus?"

Borgan nods his head, "Yes."

"That's a strange system," Kalira says, shaking her head.

Borgan sighs and nods, "Yes, it is strange, but that's how we do it," he admits.

Lilian looks up at the church of Brill and at the members of the Cult already streaming inside. She cannot believe this is her life now. She had wanted to be alone with her grief; she did not choose to be Forsaken; she did not choose to run for the Cult Leader; and yet, here she was, doing everything that she opposed. She hated this new lifestyle of hers. Damn Vician.

Lilian strode into the church, these thoughts buzzing inside her mind. She barely listened to the droning of the election judge, the same Forsaken man with the gavel. She didn't pay attention to the results, fearing that it would lead to her becoming something that she doesn't want to be.

One hundred Forsaken stood and voted for Borgan. One hundred and sixty five stood and voted for Lilian. One hundred and seventy stood and voted for Aelthalyste. Fifty six stood and voted for Hiro. The rest of the Forsaken stood and voted for no one. And so, the first week of the election ended.

Much the same happened for the week after that; and the week after that; and the week after that; and the week after that. For two months, the election was in a stalemate with little, to any movement; that all changed, when Borgan Van Talen stood and said, "I, Borgan Van Talen, drop out of the campaign and forfeit my votes to Lilian."

The members of the Forsaken mutter and whisper to each other, as the Forsaken man with the gavel pounds the table, calling for silence. Lilian looks over at Borgan with shock and surprise on her face. Borgan nods towards Lilian, smiling, "I concede to the better opponent," he says as he sits.

When silence descended the church again, the voting begins. Fifty eight stand and vote for Hiro. Two hundred and sixty five stand and vote for Lilian. Lilian, despite her feelings, actually smiles. She looks over a Borgan who offers a wink.

Lilian's good mood, however, comes crashing down, when three hundred and thirty seven stand and vote for Aelthalyste. "It's over," Kalira breathes.

The Forsaken man stands, as the others sit. "So, it is decided. With 337 votes for Aelthalyste, she has been elected as Leader of the Cult of the Forgotten Shadow." He turns to Aelthalyste, saying, "Hail the Shadow and the Leader Aelthalyste!"

The Forsaken stands and repeat after the judge, except Lilian, who sits dumbfounded. She did not want to become leader. She did not want to be a Forsaken. And yet, she is crestfallen at her loss. She looks towards Borgan who shrugs his shoulders, "The Shadow was not in our favour it seems."

"It seems it wasn't," she mutters back, her eyes moving over towards Aelthalyste. Damn Vician. Damn him!
