Chapter 20
After the night she had, Scarlet wasn't sure if she'd be able to sleep, but sleep came surprisingly easy. Stiles had told their dad that she was sick, so she had the next day off from school. Scarlet rolled over in bed, nestling against Derek as she did so. Her eyes fluttered open when she realized that he had stayed with her.
Derek was still asleep, his arms wrapped loosely around her. Scarlet carefully shifted away from him and climbed out of bed. She snuck into the bathroom, brushed her teeth, and washed her face. She stared at her reflection in the mirror for a long moment wondering what the alpha saw in her.
"Stop it, you have no idea how beautiful you are," Derek said from the doorway. Scarlet met his gaze in the mirror before turning to look at him.
"You stayed," she said.
"I told you I would."
"I didn't think you'd be able to, with my dad and everything else that is going on."
"I wanted to make sure you were ok."
"I'm fine," Scarlet said before brushing past him. Derek caught her arm and pulled her to him. He pressed a quick kiss to her forehead before looking in her eyes.
"How are you really doing," he asked.
"I just wish it would all go away," Scarlet admitted. She shook her head before leaning into him, resting her head against his chest, letting his steady heartbeat soothe her.
"Maybe I can help with that," Derek said as he glanced down at her. Scarlet looked up at him, gasping when he crushed his lips to hers. He immediately deepened the kiss, earning a low moan from Scarlet. Her fingers tangled in his hair as she attempted to pull him closer to her.
Derek's hands skimmed down her back, he gave her ass a gentle squeeze before lifting her up, letting her wrap her legs around him. He carried her to the bed, laying her out beneath him. Scarlet let out another soft moan as their hips aligned perfectly. Scarlet broke the kiss, gasping for air. Derek quickly kissed a trail down her neck earning whimpers in response. He could feel how her body was responding to him and it was driving him crazy with need.
Scarlet gasped sharply and sat up, pushing Derek aside as she did so. Her eyes fluttered open and closed for a moment before she swallowed hard.
"Scarlet, what's wrong?"
Scarlet's vision swam and she pressed a hand against her stomach. She leapt off the bed and darted into the bathroom. Derek joined her as she leaned over the toilet, he grabbed her hair as she began to throw up. Tears began to run down her face when she saw what she was throwing up, a black liquid.
"It's ok, you're ok," Derek whispered as he reached up and flushed the toilet. Scarlet continued to vomit until she was pretty sure there was nothing left in her body. She dry heaved a few times as Derek rubbed her back. Scarlet leaned her head against the edge of the toilet for a moment.
"What was that," she croaked.
"Your body... it must be having a reaction to the scratches. That has to be what it is," Derek explained. He grabbed a hand towel and wiped her face off for her.
"But why? Why is this happening," Scarlet said frantically. She struggled to catch her breath as she scrambled off the floor. Derek caught her when she tripped over the rug and fell toward the sink. "Why do things keep getting worse?"
Scarlet let out a sob as she clutched the edge of the sink. Derek turned her around so that she was leaning into him. He pulled her close as she began to sob openly. He held her until the tears subsided, wiping her face when she pulled away from him. A hiccup escaped from her mouth, and Derek couldn't help but smile. Scarlet rubbed her hand over her face as another hiccup escaped.
"I think that may be the cutest noise I've ever heard," Derek said as she pulled away from him.
"It's not funny, I get the hiccups when I'm really upset," Scarlet retorted. She hiccuped again as she grabbed her toothbrush. Derek couldn't help but laugh as the hiccups continued. Scarlet spat out the toothpaste and leaned against the sink for a moment.
Derek came up behind her and wrapped an arm around her waist. Scarlet leaned into him, the tension slowly releasing from her body. He brushed his lips against her neck, she smiled slightly.
"What can I do," he asked.
"Just don't leave, not yet," Scarlet whispered.
"I won't," Derek assured her. "I'm not going anywhere."
...
Derek and Scarlet spent the entire day together. She barely left her bed, Derek held her while they watched television. They talked about random things, anything, and everything. Derek finally convinced her to go downstairs with him to get some food. She sat on the counter while he made her a bowl of soup.
"Can I show you something," she asked suddenly.
"Yeah, what is it," Derek asked as he turned to look at her.
Scarlet pulled a cup out of the cabinet and set it on the counter. "You have to promise not to laugh," she requested.
"I won't laugh," Derek replied.
Scarlet took a deep breath before beginning to tap out a rythym with the cup. She glanced up at Derek for a moment before she started to sing.
I got my ticket for the long way round
cheap bottle of whiskey for the way
and I sure would like some sweet company
and I'm leaving tomorrow what do you say
when I'm gone, when I'm gone
oh you're going to miss me when I'm gone
you're gonna miss me by my hair
you're gonna miss me everywhere
you're gonna miss me when I'm gone
Scarlet left the cup sitting on the counter and turned to look at Derek. "The alpha told me last night that it knew things about me, he said I was afraid to sing for you, well to share this side of myself with you. Maybe I was, but I don't have to be," she explained.
"Why were you afraid?"
"My mom used to sing with me, the last thing she did before she died was sing with me. Ever since then, anytime my dad has heard me sing, it upsets him. I think its because I sound like her, it made me afraid to sing for anyone. My piano teacher doesn't even know that I can sing."
"Why wouldn't you tell anyone? You are good Scar."
"It makes my dad so upset Derek, it was awful after my mom died. He couldn't even look at me and he had no idea what to do with Stiles. Suddenly he was the single father of twins, one who couldn't sit still and the other who reminded him of wife."
"Is it still like that," Derek asked.
"Sometimes, not always."
"Have you ever talked to him about it?"
"No, it would just hurt him," Scarlet explained.
"Maybe you guys should talk about it," Derek suggested.
