Chapter 31
Scarlet sat in the stands watching lacrosse practice the next afternoon. She was going to try and talk to Isaac. She wanted to make sure he was ok, plus her dad had said there was a suspect in his dad's murder. Scarlet watched as Scott darted out of the goal and down the field. He slammed a couple of players to the ground, sniffing them before helping them up.
Scarlet jogged out onto the field and stopped next to her twin. "What exactly is Scott doing? Has he lost it completely," she whispered.
"Apparently there is another one here," Stiles said giving her a look.
"Another one," Scarlet asked in confusion she glanced at Scott for a moment before looking back at Stiles. "Oh! You mean 'another one'. Oh, um, that's cool. He might want to try a more subtle approach."
"Yeah it was the best we could come up with on short notice."
Jackson ducked out of line and headed toward the bleachers. Scarlet trailed after him, taking the seat next to him. "What's up Scar?"
"How are you doing? I heard its going to be a full moon tonight," she said casually.
"Yeah, should be a beautiful night," he said smugly.
"Yeah, crazy things happen on a full moon though, be careful."
Scarlet glanced back at the field in tme to Scott and Isaac collide with one another then land on their hands and knees. "Oh god," she mumbled as the coach blew his whistle. She noticed they were both staring at something and looked over to see her dad and two officers headed their way. "Jackson, I've got to go, I'll see you later."
Scarlet darted out to the jeep and sped all the way over to the subway station. She stumbled down the stairs colliding with Derek as she reached the bottom. "My dad, he took Isaac into custody Derek! Its a full moon tonight, we have to do something," she said breathlessly.
"We need to go get Scott," Derek said as he tugged on a shirt. She grabbed his jacket and waited for him. As soon as he was dressed, they rushed up the stairs and out of the station.
"I'll follow you over there, I have to take the jeep back for Stiles," Scarlet called as she climbed in.
Derek simply nodded before he pulled out and headed toward the school. It didn't take long for them to get there. Scarlet parked the jeep and rushed over to Derek's car, just as Scott was heading back in the building.
"Get in," Derek called as Scarlet climbed into the backseat.
"Are you serious," Scott demanded. "You did that, that's your fault."
"I know that, now get in the car, and help me."
"You know I've got a better idea, I'm going to call a lawyer, because a lawyer might actually have a better chance at getting him out before the moon goes up," Scott exclaimed.
"Not when they do a real search of the house," Derek cried.
"What do you mean," Scott asked.
"Whatever Jackson said to the cops, what's in the house is worse, a lot worse," Derek explained.
"So are you going to help us or not," Scarlet asked as she leaned between the seats. Derek pushed the door open and Scott shook his head before climbing in with them. "So what is in the house?"
"Scarlet," Derek warned.
"I know, I know, you can't blame me for trying," she mumbled.
"Why are you here," Scott asked as he glanced back at her.
"Because Isaac is part of Derek's pack, and Derek needed to know what was going on. You weren't going to tell him," Scarlet replied.
"You're right about that," Scott muttered.
"Look, for Isaac's sake the two of you have to work together," Scarlet said. "He could hurt someone, or get hurt, so for tonight, let's put aside our differences and just focus on helping Isaac. Ok?"
"Fine," Scott groaned.
...
It didn't take long for them to get to Isaac's house. Scarlet stuck close to Derek as they slowly made their way through.
"If Isaac didn't kill his father, then who did," Scott asked.
"I don't know yet," Derek said softly.
"Then how do you know he's telling the truth," Scott asked.
"Because I trust my senses, and its a combination of them. Not just your sense of smell," Derek explained.
"You saw the lacrosse thing today," Scott surmised.
"Yeah," Derek said shortly.
"Did it look that bad," Scott asked.
"Yeah."
"Oh it looked worse than that," Scarlet said easily. She jumped when she bumped into a table. Derek put a hand on her back and pulled her closer to him.
"Don't touch anything," he warned as he guided them through the house. They came to a door and Derek pulled it open. "You wanna learn, let's start now."
Scott started down the stairs and Scarlet glanced briefly at Derek. "What's down there," Scott asked.
"Motive," he replied.
"And what am I looking for," Scott asked.
"Follow your senses."
"That's very Master Yoda of you," Scarlet whispered. "Follow your senses you must."
Derek gave her an annoyed look and rolled his eyes at her. "Really Scarlet," he asked with a small grin. "Your Stiles is showing."
"What happened down here?"
"The kind of thing that leaves an impression," Derek replied. He took her hand and led her down the stairs to join Scott. They found him standing next to a large freezer. Derek flipped on the flashlight and Scott jumped.
"Open it," Derek ordered.
Scott pulled the lock off and slowly lifted the lid. Scarlet stared at the inside in confusion. There were marks all over the top and the side. Scarlet reached out her hand shaking nervously and held her hand up to the marks.
"Oh my god," she whispered as she put together the pieces. "Oh my god."
Scarlet turned away from the freezer and rushed up the stairs. She drew in a deep breath and she wrapped her arms around her stomach. She squeezed her eyes shut and drew in another shaky breath. She knew things at Isaac's house were bad, but she had no idea it was something so terrible. What kind of person did that? To their own child? A few tears slipped down her face and she yelped when someone brushed them away.
"You ok," Derek asked softly. Scarlet shook her head at him and Derek pulled her into his arms. "I won't let anyone else hurt him, this is why he wanted the bite, so he could protect himself from his father. He's with me now, I'll protect him."
"I had no idea it was like this," she whispered into his chest. "If I had known, I could have done something to help him! I could have told someone."
"Scarlet, he didn't want anyone to know, he'll be furious that I showed you that. The last thing Isaac wants is to appear weak. He needs us to be strong and help him," Derek explained. "Can you do that?"
Scarlet nodded a few times and pulled back from him. "What's the plan?"
"Scott is staying here, we are going to the station and we are going to get to Isaac before the Argents get to him. We've got to get him out of there before he shifts."
"You realize that sounds a lot easier than its going to be," Scarlet pointed out.
"It always does."
