Chapter Seven: Give Into Me
You always knew just how to make me cry
And never did I ask you questions why
It seems you get your kicks from hurting me
Don't try to understand me
Because your words just are not enough
Love is a feeling, quench my desire
Give it when I want it, taken me higher
~Three Days Grace
Bonnie grabbed her keys and purse off the kitchen counter. "Grams! I'm going out for a little," she called.
"Alright, sugar," her grandmother's voice echoed from the back room. Bonnie walked down the hallway, stopping to look at her reflection in a mirror hanging there. Just as she was about to turn to the front door, someone knocked on it. She jumped at the doorbell sounded.
"I got it," she told her Grams, opening the front door quickly, "Hell-" she stopped short seeing who it was on the other side. "What do you want?" she said coldly to a smirking Damon Salvatore.
"Oh come now, is that anyway to speak to a friend?" he asked, his eyes hidden by dark sunglasses. He had such a cold arrogance to him. Bonnie could sense it just by standing in front of him, it made her shiver. He wore a simple black V-neck shirt, dark navy jeans and black suades, but he still had this old era class to him.
"You're no friend." she said, putting an emphasis on each word. He laughed at her statement and crossed his arms over his chest, trying to make her feel small. Damon didn't have to do much to accomplish that feat. He was intimidating and left Bonnie on edge. The air felt as if it had chilled while she stared at him.
She was about to slam the door in his face but his foot stepped in the way, stopping it from shutting. "Just give it to me, Bonnie," he said.
"You can't come in here, Damon. Even if you could, I'd stop you," she warned, trying to make herself sound threatening. By the mocking expression that came over his face, Bonnie knew it wasn't working.
"Just give me the necklace, witch, and no one needs to get hurt," he spat, pushing the door back with minimal effort.
"You can't hurt me Damon," she said. Her grip on the door tightened as her heart began to race; weather from fear or from adrenaline, she didn't know.
Then he started laughing again, "Not you, Bonnie. Why would I hurt you when there are plenty of your little friends around?"
"Leave Damon, now," she warned. A pulsing heat began to grow in her chest. Bonnie could feel the power, the magic, flowing in her. Her mind called for it from the air around her.
"Give me the damn necklace first." He was getting irritated, she could tell. His shoulders were tense, his hands balled into fist against the door.
Bonnie narrowed her eyes at him. "Why do you want it so bad?" she asked. "Why this necklace, Damon?"
"Because, I just do. I need it to get something I want. And trust me, Bonnie, I always get what I want," he smirked. He went to reach towards her when, Bonnie gathered the heat in her chest ready to call on it, if she had to...if she could.
Suddenly, Damon fell to his knees, grabbing his head.
"Is there a problem here?" Gram's voice came from behind Bonnie.
"Ugh!" Damon gasped, still holding his head. In his struggle to stand back up, he fell down again.
"You threaten my granddaughter, or her friends, one more time and I'll do much more than give you a little headache," she warned, her voice so powerful it made something inside Bonnie shiver.
Then the front door slammed, leaving Damon withering on the porch and Bonnie slowly turning to her grandmother. "I think it's time we had a talk," Grams said, arms crossed over her chest.
The air outside had gotten muggy, unseasonably warm for the start of June. So when Tyler opened the Mystic Grill's doors for her, Nilin welcomed the cool air-conditioned air. Last night, she could barely make out the inside of the restaurant thanks to the dim party lighting and packed bodies. Now she could actually see its interior and it had transformed.
For one, it wasn't loaded with dancing high schoolers. Not many people were actually there at the moment. One table held a few businessmen, talking angrily over their steaks. Another held a group of girls a few years younger than Nilly, giggling and pointing to a magazine. A couple nestled in a booth, a man sitting at the bar for a mid-afternoon drink or two and the uninterested looking waitresses were the only people around.
Tyler led Nilly to a table next to the window. Looking outside, she had the full view of all the little stores and businesses around the Common. On Sundays, after church, her and her parents use to walk around town, always stopping at Nilin's favorite boutiques. Her father would have to pick her up so she could see into the shop's display cases. Tyler sat down in front of her, letting out a long ahhh and pulling her out of her thoughts.
Nilly smiled at him, "What's that for?"
He smiled back and leaned his arms on the table, "Just happy, I guess."
"Why?" she questioned, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh, I don't know, Nilly. Maybe because schools almost over, or because the weathers so nice, or because my best friend decided to drop into town without any warning," Tyler said still smiling at her, exposing his perfectly white straight teeth.
Nilin rolled her eyes at his cheesiness and kicked his shin under the table. He was about to make a scene out of it but the waitress came.
"Hi Tyler. Hey-" she stopped when she turned towards Nilly.
Nilin didn't recognize the waitress at first. She was another blonde that Nilly must have gone to school with her, probably on the High School Spirit Squad.
"Nilly," Tyler said, finishing her sentence.
"Right, Nilly. Thought you were Elena at first, I didn't know you were back in town." she said, giving Nilly a weird look.
Now Nilin remembered her, she was one of Caroline's friends. Alyssa something or other... That explained the look she was giving her.
"Well, I am." Nilly said dryly.
"Great…" she said, giving Nilin another unwelcoming look, then she turned back to Tyler, a smile on her face, "What can I get you?" She took Tyler's order, her back towards Nilly the entire time and a smile on her face. Then, she turned to Nilin again, smile gone. "And you?"
"I'll just have what he ordered." Nilin decided, closing the menu. Alyssa the Waitress snatched it from her and walked away. Nilly rolled her eyes and look at Tyler, who looked like he was about to stand up and go after her to say something.
"Don't bother Tyler, she's not worth it," she said, stretching her arms in front of her and feeling a joint pop.
"How many years has it been since you've lived here— and they're still treating you that way?" he grumbled, leaning back in the booth and shaking his head.
"I appreciate your concern, but nothing's going to change. Once a mean girl, always a mean girl. I mean, a few years of my abstinence isn't going to change that," Nilin sighed.
"Well, Caroline hates you, which means that all her little followers do too." Tyler explained, resting his elbows on the table. "You must have done something pretty nasty to accomplish that," he teased.
"Ty, I don't even know why she hates me in the first place," Nilly laughed. "But, I definitely know what I did to piss her off this time."
He narrowed his eyes at her, giving her that dissatisfied 'Oh Nilly' look she knew all too well. "What did you do?" he questioned.
Nilin twirled a strand of hair between her two fingers innocently and said, very proudly, "I kind of crashed her party last night, and I might have taken the spotlight off of her. Opps." Nilin shrugged, dropping the curl from her fingers.
Tyler's smile had disappeared. "You realize you could have potentially started World War III, right?" he said. "Massive casualties ensue."
"I know."
"And there's probably a bounty on your head right now as we speak. She wants to see it on a silver platter."
Nilin started to laugh as he cracked a smile. "I know, Tyler. But honestly, what cane she do to bother me? I didn't come back to Mystic Falls for Caroline Forbes, I came back for the people like you. I'm not going to let some bleach blonde ruin my time here," she smiled.
"Wow, what happened to you, Gilbert?" Tyler wondered, rubbing his hand under his chin as he watched her.
She shrugged her shoulders. "This cold, cruel world has caused my poor heart to freeze over, Tyler," she overdramatized. "It's like the ice age in there, not kidding," she laughed, putting a hand over her heart.
Tyler just rolled his eyes at her little performance she just preformed as Alyssa the Waitress came back with their food. Nilin smiled and thanked her when she set the plate in front of her. Of course she snorted and spun on her heels to leave.
Nilly looked up at Tyler again as he slid over his French fries to her, "She probably spit in yours." he said.
She couldn't help but laugh as she plucked one off his plate.
"Thank you for lunch." Nilin told Tyler as he pulled up to Elena's house, right behind her Jeep. She opened the car door, grateful Tyler had offered to drive her home, Nilly's feet were still killing her from this morning.
"No problem Nilly, anytime," he said, watching her get out.
She closed the door and lean in the open window, "I've missed you, Ty," she told him with a sigh. That cause for a goofy smile to spread across the big bad Tyler's face.
"Well, your back now, which means you can't miss me. So everything's good," he said, reaching over and nudging her chin with his knuckles. "Talk to you tomorrow?"
"Of course," Nilly said, grinning. Her eyes caught the time on his car radio. "Is that the right time?" she asked him.
"Mmhm," he laughed.
Her eyes widened. "Crap," she cursed under her breath.
"Hurry, go before you get in more trouble." Tyler said, winking. "I'll see you later, Gilbert."
"Bye, Ty," Nilly laughed as she dashed away from the car and bounded up the porch steps. She opened the front door to the house and stepped inside. "I'm back," she called as she slipped off her sneakers and padded down the hallway into the kitchen.
Nilin stopped in the doorway. "Um, hey there," she said, leaning on the door frame and combing her fingers through her hair.
Elena sat at the island in the middle of the kitchen, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea. "Hey there." was all she said.
"Look, mom," Nilin teased, but she saw that Elena wasn't having any of that. Nilly sighed. "I lost track of time. I'm sorry, seriously."
Elena just mmhmmed her and took a sip of her tea.
"I didn't mean to worry you or anything. I meant to call you, but my phone died last night, and I just left here." Nilly tried to explain. Elena didn't say anything. "I should go charge it." Nilin sighed.
She went to turn around to retreat up the steps when Elena spoke. "Who were you with today?" she asked, causing Nilly to freeze and turn back around slowly. There was no way that she knew. Did the girl have a freakin' surveillance system around town?
Nilly swallowed hard, should she just be honest with Elena? Honesty could be painful for Nilly though... And it's not like Damon and she did anything, just talked right?
Besides what Elena doesn't know won't hurt her. And with that, Nilly was able to answer, "I saw Tyler today, he took me to lunch."
"Oh…" Elena looked at her with surprise and then something like shame. "That's awesome," a small smile appeared and got up to stand in front of Nilly, "How was it?"
Nilin smiled and let out a breath of relief, Elena wasn't suspicious. "It was good, really good. I've missed him."
"I forgot how close you two were. I…" she paused and shook her head, "I'm sorry about that, I was just worried about you."
"Because of what you told me last night?" Nilin asked.
"I just didn't know where you were," was all she answered.
Nilin pointed to the empty spot on the fridge where her post-it not had been. "It's okay, I left a note though."
Elena laughed, "Yeah, because that was helpful."
Her laughter was cut short because Nilly surprisingly hugged her, and hugged her tight. She could see the worry in Elena's eyes, and she could see the relief in them too. It made Nilin want to reassure her.
It made Nilly feel loved, and guilty for lying. But lying was the best, right? She did promise Damon, in first place.
Elena patted Nilis's back, "Can't breathe, Nil."
"Sorry, just looked like you needed a hug." Nilin mumbled, bobbing her shoulders in a small shrug.
Elena smiled. "Yeah, I did."
