Time for Explanations

BPOV

The rain battered down on the windows as we sat in Edward's car. We had driven from the mall back to my father's house; Charlie's car was on the drive in front of us. I was here again and had a flashback of Charlie playing with the two children who I now know as my brother and Sister Leah and Seth on the garden. If these explanations all went well that could soon be me and Ava with Edward standing off to the side barbecuing for us. It was a vision I wanted to happen so as much as I dreaded what could happen inside I went to get out of the car however Edward had already beat me there opening the door for me with whilst holding an umbrella sheltering me from the rain.

Upon seeing Edwards actions Charlie raised one eyebrow at me and smirked. It had been five years since I had seen my father but still everything seemed the same. Oh apart from the fact that I am no longer an only child. After unstrapping Ava out of her car seat we made our way up the few steps which led to the front door. Charlie held the door open and I led Edward and my daughter into the home I had lived in for a year, the year my life changed. A feeling of nostalgia washed over me, apart from a few children's toys and added pictures of Charlie's new family, everything was just the same, even pictures of me in all my awkward school years. Charlie must have caught me staring at them, shocked that he kept them up,

"I never hid you from them, they know all about you," he said I assumed he was talking about his wife as well as Seth and Leah. "That's why Leah seemed so angry to see you, she may be young but she suspects that your leaving had an effect on me, and it did."

"I'm sorry dad, really, but I had my reasons."

"I know you must have had them, so we need to talk and get to the explanations but first let me introduce you to my wife."

A Native American woman who looked like she came from the reservation appeared behind Charlie, she looked faintly familiar but I put it down to visiting the reservation with Jacob during our time together. She smiled at me in a caring, soothing way that only a mother could, well a mother that wasn't mine.

We all took a seat, Charlie in his armchair; sue by his side on the arm. Edward and I sat on the sofa with Ava on Edwards's knee playing on the tablet Edward had bought her at the mall. I told him it was completely unessercery but he insisted, saying we could fill it with educational games, not those ones that make kids' brains rot.

"Who wants to go first then?" Charlie asked, as much as I didn't want to, I felt that his story would feed into mine so I volunteered.

"It started when I was still living with Renee."

"I knew that woman was a bitch, she can't help but mess up everyone's life can she?"

"Charles!" Sue nudged him in the ribs in which he yelped in response. I liked this woman more and more every moment.

"Thanks Sue, anyway she had gotten married to Phil Dwyer and he wasn't how should I say it, should I say all that sweet." Remembering Ava was in the room, Sue sweetly led her to Leah's room where I hoped after all, they would get along after all as weird as it sounded Leah was Ava's aunt. Once she got back I continued with my story.

"Phil used to come into my room at night and let's say he wasn't that kind or considerate, he would do what he wanted when he wanted and nothing anyone would say would stop him.

Charlie had always been the protective father even though I hardly spent any of my childhood with him, but at this moment, he was in to big a state of shock and all he could utter was

"Renée"

"She was there," was all I had to say to silence him as I carried on.

"She loved her alcohol and drugs too much to care about me." I felt Edward's comforting hand being placed on my thigh slowly rubbing it up and down.

"So I got fed up of the torment and decided to move down here to be with my dad."

"Best decision you've ever made," Sue noted.

"Yes, well, that's what I thought at the time, but in the end, it left me with an even bigger problem."

"Pipsqueak is not a problem, love,"Edward whispered in my ear.

"Pipsqueak?" Charlie who had just come back to reality questioned.

"Ava."

"Anyway, not soon after I arrived I met Jacob Black my boyfriend."

"Ah yes, Billy Black's son?"

"The very one."

"I've never liked you dating, Bells," Charlie voiced his opinion, "I still don't, you're my little girl." I felt Edward shift nervously at my side at the glare of Charlie. I entwined my fingers with his to seek comfort.

"He tried very hard to hide it but Jacob was just like Phil, I was his punch bag. A part of me thought I loved him so I put up with it and I tried to live with it and change him, hell I had even brought him an actual punch bag to let out his anger. But the alcohol messed with his head.

"Jacob Black, as in my godson, we're still talking about the same person here?" Charlie looked puzzled. I don't blame him, whenever we were around him Jacob acted like a true prince.

"If you're not going to believe me then I'm wasting my time here."

"I believe you; it's just so hard to take it all in, that's all." I mean he was so distraught when you left unexpectedly left he came around all the time and we would just relive memories of you together."

"I never wanted to hurt you, dad, believe me, but I had to get out of there, for my own life, but even so for the life of my unborn baby, Definitely for her, my Ava."

"I understand. But why didn't I deserve an explanation?"

"I know I should've given you one, but if I had, you would have killed him. I don't think I could have managed having a dead ex as well as a father locked up for murder at the age of 16."

"I wouldn't have!"

"You would have, Charles, don't deny it!" Sue had obviously spent enough time with my father now to know what he was like.

"Well maybe I would have but we're all together now that's the main thing."

"Yes so don't jeopardise it by getting locked up."

"So what's your story?" Charlie turned to Edward, panic crossed his face and he gulped. Hard.

"I think we should step outside."

"They're alright, sweetheart." Sue and I were in the kitchen where I had offered to help her make lunch but I was getting more nervous by the second. Edward and my dad had now been outside for over half an hour.

"We would have heard shouting or screaming, if anything bad was happening." Sue's thoughts did nothing to ease mine. On the plus, the children were still upstairs and at the last glance they were all playing sweetly together. Well Ava and Seth were, and Leah and Seth were, I think we have a way to go with Leah and Ava. They were arguing over who had the best room last I heard. I hadn't clearly seen Leah's room but Edward had designed Ava's first ever bedroom so it was obviously going to be the best. But still, everyone to themselves.

The back door slammed open and my dad and Edward walked in like best mates. Chatting away a beer in hand, they even announced they were going to the latest baseball game together Saturday. Edward had even invited my family over to his home for Sunday, a reminder of his home country he said the classic British roast dinner with the whole family was not to be missed. His side of the family included. I couldn't wait to see how Charlie, the usual reserved guy got along with Alice. Leah and Seth were around the same age as Monroe, so I could see them getting along and how perfect our two families would fit together and unite as one.

"You picked a good one, kiddo."

"Thanks, I think so too."

With the kids all seated around the table, Edward and Sue cutting up the food for the little ones and everyone chattering away, It was like I had never been gone and how my life should have been the whole time. I made a promise to myself that it will be from now on.
