Chapter 6

Morgan entered the interview room that Hotch was in with Maxine. Hotch looked up in mid-sentence and gave Morgan a questioning look. Morgan gestured to him to follow him outside the room. Turning to a deputy, Hotch ordered him to watch over Maxine until he returned.

They were outside the room when he addressed his team member. "What is it?" he asked.

"Spencer and Dave are on their way back and Spencer might have figured it out."

"Figured out what?" Hotch asked.

"Well, you know those cases with those kids who are deadly loyal to their parents? They see no wrong in them no matter what they do. Maxine may be one of those cases. Think about it, she has lived with this man her whole life; he feeds her, clothes her, and keeps her."

"And he gives her siblings, people to keep her company." Hotch finished. "Do you think that we could change that perspective?"

"I think if we give her reason to doubt her father, she could break."

Hotch nodded. "It's worth a shot, I'm not getting anywhere with her." Hotch turned back to the door and opened it and let Morgan walk in first. Maxine stared intently at the table and didn't look up when Morgan and Hotch entered the room again.

"Maxine, my name is Derek Morgan." Morgan introduced himself. Maxine stayed silent. Sighing, Morgan sat down across from the young woman. "So, you're eighteen?"

Silence

"I remember when I was eighteen. I was ready to get out into the world and help people. People like you."

Maxine adjusted herself and leaned farther back into her chair. Morgan, seeing the defenses go up, held up his hands up.

"Hey, now, I understand why you don't trust us. You have a duty to your siblings and to your father. But I've met kids like you Maxine. Kids who could shift people's thinking with one action, but that hope is broken the moment you are born into a situation like this." Morgan shook his head. "Kids who would do anything for their family."

Maxine raised her head then quickly put it down and looked away.

"Family is important, Maxine." Derek continued. "I know that without my family, I wouldn't have made it here. But there is a fine line between family and your loyalty to them and the crime you commit for them."

"My family just wants to be left alone." Maxine spoke. Her blue eyes pierced Morgan to his core, but he didn't show it to her.

"Don't you want to know your mother?" Hotch asked her. "Don't you want your siblings to know theirs?"

Maxine's eyes grew cold. "Father talks about the woman who gave me up because I interfered with her whoring around." She looked down at her hands. "Father says I shouldn't talk ill of her, but sometimes it boils inside and I cannot let it stop from coming out. Father protects the rest of the family by taking them away from the whores so we can be together."

"You call them 'whores' because that is what your father tells you?" Morgan confirmed and Maxine nodded. "Did you ever think about how those women are treated when your father takes them off the road?"

Looking away Maxine grew tight-lipped. Morgan leaned forward.

"Your father rapes those women. Being in a religious town, they can't abort the baby. Or maybe it's because he tells them he'll kill them if they abort the birth. Either way, your father pushes this on these women and when they feel as though they are safe, he takes away the only thing they found good in the world; the child."

"You're wrong." Maxine interjected. "Those women didn't want them. Father took them away so they could have a better life."

"So what did he tell you about these women?"

"They are whores. They threw himself on him."

"How does he keep in touch with them? To get the children."

"Father has eyes everywhere. He remembers faces, places, names, you name it. He is like a wolf tracking its prey, he never gives up."

"So, what you mean is he will stop at nothing to get the children?" Hotch asked her.

Maxine nodded. "Nothing gets in the way of my father."

Morgan turned to Hotch and he nodded. Morgan pulled out the file folder with all the case notes and pictures. He pulled out the photo of the last crime scene. Placing it in front Maxine, he waited for it to sink in. She picked it up and looked at it.

"What is this?"

"This is the last crime, Tyler's mom was at a therapy session with a babysitter at her house. Your father came in and killed her."

Maxine shook her head. "He said there wasn't a problem. He said it was a 'grab-and-go'. He didn't-" she began to cry. Hotch and Morgan met eyes and knew they finally broke the barrier.

When Maxine calmed down, she was more compliant with their questions. Reid felt bad that she had to find out who her father really was in that way but it seem necessary with their case. Reid was behind the glass of the interview room looking in. After hanging up with Derek, he had an awkward conversation with Rossi on the way back about how he should be comfortable that he found someone and he should shout his Derek's name from the tallest mountain if he wanted to. Let's just say the classical music station was turned up pretty loud during the car ride back to the police station.

Morgan had calmed Maxine down and set a box of tissues in front of her. She looked at them like they were a foreign thing to her and used the back of her hand to wipe the rest of the tears away.

"We're sorry you had to learn about the true side of your father, but we need to ask some questions if you are willing."

Maxine shrugged. "Whatever you want to do. My whole life has been a lie up until now. I don't know if I can be of any help."

"You can help us bring your father to justice." Hotch said. "With your father behind bars, no one will be harmed any longer."

"What about my siblings?" Maxine asked. "What will happen to us when all of this is over? I mean, Tyler is a baby and hasn't grown accustomed to our lifestyle, but what about Clara, John, Milly, Mark, and Hanna? They've only known me and my dad and the woods. Nothing else. What happens to them?"

"We don't know." Morgan answered her. "We aren't sure about what will happen to them, but we know that if you help us, I will personally make sure your siblings will be alright."

"Derek." Hotch warned. His tone telling him not to make any promises.

Maxine thought about it and then nodded. "I don't know where my...father is, he leaves after he gathers one of my siblings. He doesn't return for many days. He might be back now."

"Can you take us to them? Your siblings, maybe we can make your dad come out of the woods if he thinks someone found you and took you out of the forest." Morgan said.

"Probably. But I need to talk to then otherwise they won't want to come out."

Hotch nodded. "When can we start?"

Maxine looked up at him. "Tonight. When it turns dark."

Thank you all for putting up with me! I've been needing to post this for about three weeks!
