Someone in the reviews requested Blythe/Russell, so here it is. Sorry guys, I tend to choose suggestions that inspire creativity in m. I'd rather give you all a good quality piece with a nice prompt. That said, I WILL be doing ALL possible ships between the main pets at some point, and also some others with Buttercream, Shahrukh, etc. Though I will say that the only humans I feel comfortable writing are Blythe and possibly the Biscuits.
I'm snowed in so expect another one today or tomorrow. Enjoy!
"Rrrrrr…"
There it was. That sound again. Vinnie scratched his head confusedly as the low growl reverberated throughout the room once more, bouncing off of the TV he was so devotedly plastered to. More confused than frustrated, he stood up. It had been a good 20 minutes since the noise had begun, and he wanted to know what was causing it.
Taking a rare pause from his TV show, he began to look around. The place was mostly quiet. Minka and Penny were next door with Buttercream. Zoe and Pepper were taking a nap in the fire hydrant. Even his best friend Sunil was asleep on one of the tree branches. Who, then…?
Vinnie soon got his answer. Making his way to the window bordering the play area, he realized. Russell.
The hedgehog's furry face was glued to the window as he made the noise again—a low, frustrated growl. So that was what Vinnie was hearing. The gecko decided to break the silence.
"Um, Rusty?"
Russell swiveled around with a start as the gecko realized he had snuck up on his friend. Whatever the hedgehog was looking at, it must be really distracting.
"What, Vinnie?" he snapped in irritation.
Hands up, Vinnie responded, "Woaaah there man, calm down. I was just wondering what you were up to. You've been makin' that weird growly noise for a while now. It's freakin' me out."
"It's nothing, okay?" Russell huffed defensively.
"Don't mess with me, dude, it's gotta be somethin'. You sound like a werehog when you growl like that! C'mon, scooch over."
With that, he pushed a defiant Russell out of the way, sticking his own nose to the glass so he could get a better view of what was going on inside. After a moment of squabbling with his apparently-embarrassed hedgehog friend, he realized what Russell was looking at. Behind the front counter was his human friend Blythe. Hm. Vinnie didn't know she was at the shop, but he soon found out the reason why she didn't come to visit the pets just yet. The customer she was chatting with was none other than her green-eyed crush, Josh.
"Blythe?" he said, whipping his head around to face Russell again, "And Josh? THAT'S what you're upset about?"
Russell had suddenly lost his anger. Instead, he looked back at the gecko with a very sheepish look. His ears were flat against his head and he looked like he was about ready to curl himself into a ball.
"W-well—"
"That's it?" Vinnie interrupted. "I mean, sure, man, her talkin' to Josh held her up a bit. I know it sucks that she didn't come to visit first thing, but I don't see why that would be an issue. It's only, like, a few minutes' difference. Everyone else is asleep anyways."
Russell didn't say anything. In fact, he didn't even look at Vinnie.
"Waaaait."
Another pause. Vinnie stared intently at his friend, then turned his gaze back to the window. Russell. Blythe. Russell. Blythe. Russell… wait! He had it!
"Y-you—" the gecko stuttered his way through his epiphany while Russell turned to watch. "You—you're jealous, man! Jealous of Josh!"
Once again, Russell was quick to defend himself. "W-wha? Vinnie, I'll have you know that is simply preposterous! Blythe… well, she's Blythe! A human! Our friend! There's no way—"
"Awh, quit yer yappin' Rusty. I know the truth. I may be stupid, but I'm not… Okay, nevermind. Point is, I know what's goin' on here." By this time, Vinnie had regained his cool demeanor, and was smiling devilishly at the hedgehog, who was rapidly turning a hot shade of red.
Vinnie continued, smile growing wider. "And now that I've found out, I think you and I both know what I'm gonna do."
Russell was petrified.
"You wouldn't."
"Oh, I would."
"I'm not going to let you. No way. Not like this."
"You can't stop me, man."
The two were face to face still, Vinnie's wicked grin clashing with Russell's frightened wince. In an instant, the gecko turned to move. Though Russell scrambled to chase him, he found that Vinnie was not going through the door to talk to Blythe. Instead, he was dashing back to the others.
"SUNIL! Buddy, you're not gonna BELIEVE THIS!"
So yeah I feel like the ending is kinda weak. Lost inspiration halfway through. Sorry, hope this does the pairing enough justice. Russell/Blythe is actually pretty damn cute if you write it correctly.
