Pebbles danced around the tires as Randy pulled up to the dirt parking lot. He looked up, unable to see the full view of the mansion from his windshield. The grey house was massive, equipped with columns and symmetrical windows, and damn was he excited to go in. He could already hear the music blaring through his car. All kinds of crowds were headed to the same direction, like ants joining on an ant hill. From what he could see, this party already seemed like a promising contribution to his five day streak.

Randy didn't wait longer to grab his favorite gray jacket from the passenger's seat. Soon, the bottom of his black converse hit the sand and made its way towards the house. Unfamiliar faces joined his path, inevitably melding him into one big crowd. Shoulders began to rub against his own which forced him to shove his hands into his pockets. He made no verbal effort of any sort and figured there was plenty of time to socialize.

And boy was he right.

An hour into the party, he already lost count of names and faces he'd interacted with. It was nice being around new faces and faces he knew he'd never see again. The anonymity and lack of commitment were enticing factors of these escapades.

"Time to get drunk," Randy said. He spent so much time on people, he hardly had time to drink.

Making his way towards the bar, with a marked red cup in hand, he snaked through the crowds. A bottle of Hennessey soon ended up in his possession. After pouring himself a shot, he offered the bottle to a nameless guy across the table.

"Here you go."

"Oh! Fasho! Thanks!"

Randy downed his liquid in one swig and grunted at the lack of chase. He reached for the bottle again but stopped as soon as he saw the most familiar face he'd ever seen. Every bit of his surroundings melted into insignificance.

"Alyssa?"

"Oh, hey." She looked at him momentarily before grabbing the bottle.

Randy watched in horror as she poured continuously into her cup. There looked to be at least four shots by now, and she was still pouring.

"That's enough!" Randy reached across the table and grabbed the bottle from her.

"Okay, okay, geeez." Alyssa nonchalantly shrugged. She secured her black chiffon cardigan around her torso and began to turn away.

Randy quickly got around the table.

"Do you even know how much alcohol is in there? That's not beer, you know."

"Randy, I'm trying to enjoy myself, okay?" She raised the cup to his face. "Hopefully this can help with that."

Randy regretfully watched as she downed every last drop. It was like watching someone get swept away by waves never to be seen again. In all their years of friendship, this was the first time he'd seen her drink alcohol. This was also the first time they'd spoken to each other since the faithful day they broke up. The fact that she was even talking to him made him wonder how much alcohol she'd already consumed.

"Oooooh, fuck, that shit was warm. It burns!" She scrunched her face at the red plastic in hand.

"You're gonna feel it real soon. Especially with how much you took in one drink. That's enough for now, okay? You need to slow down."

"Rands, I didn't come to a party to be chaperoned. Either you take another drink with me or you go away."

"Here," a guy said as he handed Alyssa another cup.

"Nah, go give that to someone else," Randy interjected. He pushed the guy's hand away and began moving the brunette away from the bar. "Alyssa, don't ever just drink what someone gives you."

"Mmm," she smiled then laughed. She walked along with Randy but her steps grew more sloppy.

"Al," Randy grabbed her wrist to ensure she didn't bump into anyone.

"I'm just…" her head swayed towards his shoulder. "I just wanna have fun."

"Okay, but you don't needa drink anymore."

"But I was-" Alyssa took a step forward then back. "I wasn't fun before the draaaaaank."

"You were perfectly fine."

"No, no, no. If I was, you wouldn't have cheated on me."

"Alyssa…" Randy felt his heart twitch. Seeing the effects of what he'd done to her was devastating, but he knew he deserved to feel her pain.

"Ya silly boy!" she grabbed his face with both hands and giggled. "Is this the kinda girl you wanted?"

"No, Al."

"Do you know how damn hard it was to lose you? To see you around school? You were all I had and then-" she released her hold on him after being shoved by a moving crowd.

"You okay?" Randy wrapped one arm behind her, getting a waft of the alcohol in her breath.

"Mm hmmm." She used the palm of her hand to push him away but stumbled backwards.

"Let's go sit somewhere. You can barely walk, Al."

Alyssa blinked rapidly and compiled. Her head was beginning to turn then turn again, and it felt as though bodies were shifting in motion. She simply followed wherever she was guided, unable to understand what was happening to her body. Thankfully, a pair of hands were secured around her shoulders from behind, and she trudged along. The noises from all the mouths and speakers were making her senses go haywire.

She looked forward as the door opened which allowed a gust of wind to claim her face. She shook her head and blinked fast.

"Take a step," Randy said. "Another one. Another one. Another step. One more, Al."

Her foot landed hard which made her knees unbuckle.

"You're okay. I got you," Randy said with one arm around her waist. "We're almost to the bench."

Alyssa brought a hand to her forehead and nearly collapsed when she finally reached the sitting position. Her head landed right on Randy's shoulder.

"How you feeling?"

"Not as good." She covered her face with her hands again. "Ugh! My head is doing donuts!"

"If you can throw up for me, please. I'll hold your hair up for you."

Alyssa shook her head.

"Okay, just rest your head then." Randy wrapped an arm around her for support. He could still hear the music playing but was glad it sounded significantly more mute. He wasn't drunk, but he was glad to be away from all the noise. If it meant that he was with Alyssa, he'd been glad to be away from everything.

After a few more seconds, Randy looked down at her and noticed she was already fast asleep.

Three Months Later

"Guess what I got after third period?"

Alyssa was getting ready to open the driver's door when Randy slapped an envelope on the window. Without bothering to look at him, she grabbed it from his grip and pulled the contents out immediately. In front of her was a double five-by-seven of their prom picture.

"Woah, look at you all spiffy."

"I would, but I'm too busy staring at you in that dress." Randy was looking over her shoulder intently. This picture had been in his sight all day.

Just two weeks ago, they went to senior prom as each other's dates. The event was the most contact they had since reuniting at the mansion party. Although things between them weren't the same, both of them were more than happy to have gone together. Randy was ecstatic with the second chance to be in her life, and Alyssa wouldn't have wanted to go with anyone else.

"Mind if I take it home to cut, and I'll bring your copy tomorrow?" Randy asked.

"Yeah, that's fine." Alyssa stuffed the pictures back into the envelope and handed it to Randy. For the first time in a few days, their eyes locked.

"Or actually, are you doing anything today? Wanna come over and hangout? I have the Gorge Foreman grill to make food."

Alyssa chuckled in approval. "Oh, someone's already getting stuff for college."

"Yeah, well, I would love to break it in for my best friend."

Alyssa pursed her lips together and looked away. Neither of them had used the B word in months. Albeit they were civilized, they were definitely not the way they used to be as best friends.

"But if you already have plans, it's coo. Maybe next time?"

"I didn't have plans, but I guess I do now." Alyssa shrugged.

"Yeah?" Randy beamed. "Okay, cool."

"I'll meet you at your house?"

"I cant wait. I'll see you soon."

Alyssa nodded then clicked open her car. She slipped inside and watched as Randy walked away with a beat in his step.

Six Months Later

Randy and Alyssa were laying side by side with their fingers laced over their stomachs. For the past fifteen minutes, they've been staring at the ceiling and remaining completely mute in Randy's bedroom. This was the most quiet time they've had since they started college, and it was a refreshing change of pace. Alyssa's school was an hour north from home, while Randy's was two hours south. It was Thanksgiving break, and all they wanted was to lay in silence at home together.

After a few more minutes, Randy turned his face to Alyssa and saw her profile. "If things happened differently between you and me-"

Alyssa looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. What happened between them had been a taboo topic. What happened in the past, as far as she was concerned, should be left in the past.

"Do you think we would've went to the same university?"

Alyssa faced the ceiling again. "I can't really say. I didn't really know which schools you were deciding between, so it's not like we were trying to avoid each other."

"But my point is, we might've made sure we'd end up in the same school."

"You're probably right."

"College would be so much better."

"Familiar isn't always better, Randy."

"No, but having you around is." He looked at her, but she didn't look at him. "I don't look forward to after class, because I know you won't be there."

"Well, I'm here now."

"For now."

"Randy, why you gotta be so negative?" Alyssa looked at him with a grin on her face. When he failed to reply, she moved towards him and locked their lips.

His eyes shot wide open.

"There. Will that make you feel better?"

Randy stayed immobile. To kiss her the first time was a shock but to kiss her again was impossible.

"No? Okay, I tried." Alyssa moved away from him, leaving him cold.

"No, no, it did make me feel better." Randy leaned on his elbow to face her. "A lot better, actually. I'm just surprised-"

"That I actually wanted to kiss you again? Well, I did."

Randy opened his mouth but couldn't reply to her bluntness. He watched her move closer again then closed his eyes when their lips met for a second time. This kiss lasted much longer as if they were trying to savor every second and every feel.

"Alyssa…" Randy breathed. He pulled away and rested his forehead against hers. "I don't wanna hurt you."

"So you don't wanna kiss me?"

"I do, but I don't wanna mess it up with you again."

Alyssa cupped his cheek with her hand. "Then don't. Just kiss me."

Randy, his mind fighting desperately with his heart, didn't waste another second to move on top of her. This third kiss grew more feverish, their lips gliding together in a fast, hungered motion. His arms wrapped around her, hugging her to him.

They continued to kiss as their mouths responded to each other's so effortlessly. It was passionate and deep and a reminder of what they once shared.

Randy's wet lips moved across her cheek to her ear to her neck. She moaned at his touch and wrapped an arm around him even tighter.

The center of Alyssa's body was beginning to warm. "Randy."

He continued his tender but quickened pace to reach her lips once more.

"Randy," she said.

"Mm, you okay?" He looked at her. His breaths were shallow. He moved his fingers to interlock with hers, and for a few seconds, their eyes communicated with intimacy in silence.

"Do you have a condom?"

"What? Alyssa…"

She bit her lip in order to tame her heavy breathing.

"Alyssa. What are you saying?"

"That I wanna share this with my best friend."

Randy couldn't bring himself to say anything- to accept it.

"That even after what you did, you're still the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Randy searched her eyes for any form of hesitation, desperate to claim to it, but he saw none.

This whole thing was making his heart ram profusely against his chest. Everything he ever wanted was right in front of him. Everything he thought that was too good for him was being presented on a silver platter. How did he deserve this?

"Al, I don't have a condom."

"Okay." Alyssa smiled in order to mask her disappointment, but her whole face were already blushed.

"You have to be sure that's what you really want."

"I am."

"Just think about it some more, and if you still want to, we'll get protection. Okay?"

"Okay," Alyssa said.

Randy kissed the skin on where his cheek had been resting on. It was warm and soft and slightly trembling from the aftershocks. He further raised his head to lock gazes with Alyssa.

"How are you feeling?" he asked her.

"Amazing," she said. She combed her fingers through his short hair. "You were amazing."

"We were amazing." Randy moved up to press his lips to hers.

"I can't believe we lost it to each other. After all we've been through."

"What?"

"We lost it…" Alyssa's cheeks grew warm when she realized her faulty assumption. "I…umm…never mind."

Randy immediately reached for her hand. "Alyssa."

"No, no. It's my fault for thinking you never…"

He began to knead her hand. For the second time that day, his heart was galloping against his rib cage. Only this time, it was because it was beginning to break.

"I'm sorry," she said.

"No, don't be. I'm sorry."

"So…who'd you lose it to?" she asked skeptically.

Randy looked down in utter guilt. He knew what assumption she was under, because this was the area of his life that had been off limits to her. He didn't want to have to go into this, but he knew he should've told her everything a long time ago; not even as a lover, but as a best friend.

How was he supposed to break her apart after making love to her? How could he break her heart a second time?

"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."

"My first girlfriend." He looked up and ignored the lump in his throat.

The thoughts, all these thoughts began to swim in Alyssa's head. The look on Randy's face was telling her way more than he was saying. It was making her heart palpitate fast, way, way too fast. She was almost afraid for the next seconds to come.

"I did it with Melanie, too." His voice was filled with dread and uncertainty.

Alyssa closed her eyes. She was scared he was gonna say that. When she opened her eyes a second later, tears ran down her face.

Randy, unwilling to take away her right to feel, allowed her to cry. He simply caressed her cheeks, feeling the dampness seep through his fingers.

"So that's what you were doing while you were cheating on me."

"It didn't mean anything."

"It didn't mean anything?" Alyssa bit her trembling lips. Immediately, she tasted the salt and regretted ever breaking a tear. She sat up, pushing Randy away. "It didn't mean anything?"

"No."

"Randy, what we just did meant everything. How can you tell me doing that doesn't mean anything?"

"Because it wasn't with you."

"And yet you still kept going? You still kept giving a part of yourself, that I didn't even have, to someone else? You tell me you love me and you do that with another person?"

Randy couldn't deny the accusations. They were true.

"Gosh, I'm so stupid," she whispered, shaking her head, staring idly into space. There was nothing coming down on her face anymore, but she could still feel a pool of liquid along her bottom lashes.

"You weren't. I was."

"No, I am, Randy. I was naïve enough to not notice my own boyfriend was already having sex. I was naïve enough to assume that we were losing it to each other."

Randy curled his hands into a fists. Breaking her heart the first time was a shock but doing it a second time was impossible.

"You fooled me once, Randy, but I fooled myself twice."
