Chapter 15

Disclaimer: I don't own the Vampire Diaries. I'm just borrowing

Note: Previously, in "Hunter's Moon," Stefan and Caroline visit Damon and tell them that they are adding to their family, and Damon tells them about Elena. Elena then calls her husband and tells him that she's now temporarily partnered with Elijah.

I got the idea for this chapter while I was in the shower and I thought about it over the course of my day. Hopefully, this will sound just as good written out as it did in my head. No spoilers, just keep reading!

Later that Day...

Elena came out of the bathroom she had gone into while she and Elijah stopped for lunch, hating the fact that her hormones were causing her to be sick. She didn't remember being like this when she was pregnant with Christian and Anastasia, and she thought that maybe this was her body's way of compensating for that. Yeah, that was a comforting thought, her body suddenly deciding to make up for the lack of sickness it may have had during her first pregnancy.

Elijah was concerned when she returned to the table and waited until she was seated before he said, "Are you all right, Elena?"

"I'd be lying if I said yes, so no, I'm not," she replied. "I'm pregnant, Elijah."

"Is this your first or second?"

"Second," said Elena. "I have a pair of ten-year-old twins." She sighed. "The strange part is, during my first pregnancy, I don't think I remember being like this. I know what you're going to say, 'Every pregnancy is different,' considering how you endured seeing your mother being pregnant with your siblings, but I just...feel like my body is suddenly deciding that it wants to be like this."

Elijah gently put his hand on her shoulder. "It'll get better, Elena, even if you think it won't. This is just the beginning stages. As you progress, things will gradually improve. Just give it time."

Elena said nothing, just nodded. She was about to say something when she heard her phone ring. Scowling curiously, she reached into her pocket and looked at the ID. When she didn't see a name next to the number, she was a bit puzzled. "That's weird."

"What is it?"

"I don't know. The phone is acting strange." She got up from her place in the booth. "I'm going to go see if I can figure out just who's trying to get in contact with me."

Elijah nodded and watched her as she left. He was puzzled by all this too and wondered what this could mean. Hopefully, the answer could be reached, even if they had to try to find it until they exhausted every resource.

Outside...

Elena kept checking the phone to see who the mystery caller was. Even though part of her wanted to brush it off and think that it was probably a telemarketer, another part of her wouldn't be satisfied until she found out who it was. She was still checking when someone grabbed her from behind, clamping a hand over her mouth to muffle her screams, and making her drop her phone to the ground as she was being dragged away to an awaiting white van, which drove off the minute Elena was put inside.

Some Time Later...

The first thing Elena felt when she opened her eyes again was a splitting headache. When her vision came back into focus, she saw that she was in a warehouse of some kind. That was weird, she was in the parking of the restaurant not too long ago. Shit, Elijah was going to go ballistic when he found out that she was gone. Great, just what she didn't need, getting kidnapped while conducting a murder investigation.

This reminds me of when I first met Damon, she thought. I got kidnapped twice.

As soon as she completed that thought, Elena tried to move, but found that it was impossible. Looking behind her, she saw that she was tied up. Question is, who did this to her? The other question was, what did they expect to gain by kidnapping a pregnant police detective?

"Ah, good, you're awake. I was wondering when you were going to come around."

Startled by the voice, Elena turned to see her captor coming toward her. When he got closer, she gasped. "Silas? What the hell do you think you're trying to prove, you son of a bitch?"

"Detective Gilbert, you flatter me," he replied. "As far as what I'm trying to prove, I don't think I'd have to prove anything." He gave her a smile. "Did you like finding the bodies of those women I left for you to find?"

Elena fought the urge not to puke. "One question, Silas, why is it that no one has seen your face, including your victims? Who are you behind the mask you wear?"

Silas smirked at her. "That's a good question, Detective, and I'm going to let you see my face because I'm feeling so generous." He removed the mask from his face, revealing it to Elena. "This, my dear, is what I look like."

Elena gasped when she saw his face. He looked like Stefan. But, how was that possible? "No, it can't be. Why the hell do you look like my brother-in-law? There has to be some mistake!"

"Oh, there's no mistake," said Silas. "I do look like your brother-in-law, Stefan Salvatore. I know that I could've taken my mask and then used the fact that we look alike to get him framed for those murders I committed, but then, that would've been too obvious."

Elena scowled at him. "Does Katherine know about this?"

"You would think that, wouldn't you?" said Silas. "But, no, your sister doesn't know what I really look like. More often than not, the word of a prison inmate is bullshit." He chuckled. "If she did know what I really looked like, it would take the fun out of the mystery."

Elena was about to answer him when Tyler walked in, noticing that his former partner was there. "Why is she here, boss?"

"She's bait for a trap we're setting for Agent Mikaelson," said Silas. "Since Detective Salvatore is out of commission for the time being, we'll have to settle for him." He cleared his throat. "If you'll excuse me, I have a ransom call to make."

That being said, he walked out of the room, leaving Elena and Tyler alone. There was an uneasy silence between them until Elena spoke. "How could you do this, Tyler? First Mikael, now Silas? You were a good cop. Why throw it all away to be some serial killer's lackey?"

"My reasons for doing what I've done are none of your business."

"I'd still like to know why."

"Maybe it was because I was sick of not getting enough recognition for the things I've done while I was a cop," said Tyler. "True, the victims we saved would thank me for catching the monsters who hurt them, but it wasn't enough. I wanted more!"

"And for that, you turned to a life of crime?" said Elena. "You didn't have to do that, Ty."

"And yet, here I am, on the opposite side," said Tyler. "You should consider doing the same, Elena. How long do you think you can put up with being on the side of justice before you decide that it's not worth it, huh?"

"I'd never consider it," said Elena. "I'm not Katherine, nor will I ever be, so you can take your speech and shove it up your ass!"

Tyler was about to slap her for that remark, but stopped himself. Somehow, he felt she wasn't worth the energy. Instead, he said, "Have it your way then, Elena. Just remember, I offered."

Back at the Diner...

Elijah was getting anxious. It had been almost an hour since Elena left him to check her phone and she hadn't returned. Finally, he decided to go outside and see if she was okay, since she wasn't exactly feeling well earlier. Getting up out of his booth, he walked outside, looking all around for any sign of her, finding nothing. That was when he saw her phone on the ground. Kneeling down, he picked it up and looked at it, puzzled as to why it was there.

That's peculiar, he thought. Detective Gilbert is never without her phone.

The ringing from his jacket pocket brought him out of his reverie, so he pocketed Elena's phone and took his own, looking at the ID screen. He saw "UNLISTED" and wasn't sure what that meant. His curiosity getting the better of him, Elijah pressed "SEND" and put the phone to his ear.

"Mikaelson."

"Hello, Agent Mikaelson. I was wondering when we'd finally get a chance to speak."

"Who is this?"

Laughter was heard on the other end. "Why, Agent Mikaelson, I'm surprised at you. This is Silas, the guy that you and Detective Gilbert are trying to track."

Elijah then realized who this was. "Where is she, Silas? Where is Detective Gilbert?"

"Relax, I haven't done anything to her," said Silas. "She's just visiting me and my friend, Tyler. Whether or not anything happens to her depends on you."

"Have you no pity?" said Elijah. "She's a pregnant woman!"

"Is she now?" said Silas. "Well, I appreciate the heads up. If you want her and her unborn child to remain unharmed, you will do exactly as I say. If you don't, I kill them both. Do we have an understanding?"

"Where are you?" said Elijah. "Tell me where you're hiding. It's time we met face to face."

"I'm in an abandoned office building in the downtown area," said Silas. "You're welcome to stop by, since you're so eager to meet face to face." Not letting Elijah respond, he added, "Come alone. If I see so much as a cop car outside the building, I won't hesitate to kill Detective Gilbert and the child. To repeat what I said earlier, do we have an understanding?"

"Do I have your word that you will be there when I arrive?"

"Of course you do," said Silas. "It would be rude of me not to be there when my guest arrives."

With that, Silas hung up before Elijah could say anything else. Quickly, he dialed the number for the hospital. He had to speak to Damon, regardless of his feelings toward him. When the woman at the front desk answered, he said, "This is Agent Mikaelson. Could you patch me through to Detective Salvatore, please? It is a matter of extreme urgency that I speak with him."

There was then some silence as he waited for his request to be put through. Finally, he heard Damon pick up. "Hello?"

"Damon, don't hang up, it's Elijah," he replied. "Something serious has just happened and I want to tell you about it as soon as possible."

"You sound scared, FBI Guy," said Damon. "What happened?"

"Your wife has been kidnapped by Silas."

"What? Elena was kidnapped by Silas?" said Damon. "I'm warning you, you asshole, if anything happens to either Elena or my child, I'm going to hold you personally responsible for it, do you understand me?"

"I can understand your anger toward me, Damon, and you have every right to be," said Elijah. "But, being angry at me isn't going to help get your wife back. I found out where Silas is keeping her, and I fully intend on rescuing her."

For a few minutes, there was silence on the other end and Elijah wasn't sure if Damon heard him or not. Finally, the younger man said, "All right, where's the son of a bitch keeping her?"

"In an abandoned office building downtown," said Elijah. "I agreed to come alone."

"That's the same tactic they use in the movies and on TV. I'm surprised you fell for it."

"Silas was serious about his threat to harm Elena and the baby," said Elijah. "As I said before, I fully intend on rescuing her, Damon. I also intend on keeping you posted. The minute I get her out, I'll call you."

Damon sighed on his end. "All right, FBI Guy, I'll hold you to that promise. The sooner we stop Silas, the sooner we can get on with our lives."

Note: Yeah, I know, cliffhanger, but I promise that it will continue in the next chapter. And don't worry, Elena will be rescued. Stay tuned!
