Chapter 16

Note: Previously, in "Hunter's Moon," Silas kidnaps Elena and reveals himself to her.
Hey, guys! I know that I haven't updated in a while (the last time being February 20), but I haven't been inspired by anything. But, since I'm here now, I'm going to update. No spoilers, just keep reading!
Virginia State Women's Prison – That Same Moment...
Sweat poured down her face as Katherine crawled out of the hole she had dug from her cell to the outside of the prison. She had gotten a bad feeling earlier as she sat in her cell and although she knew that she was taking a huge risk by escaping, she didn't give a shit. Something told her that Elijah was in trouble and she needed to get to him immediately. This was why she had dug her way out of the prison while the guards weren't looking.
Once she was safely outside, Katherine wasted no time in making a mad dash toward a motorcycle, which she revved up and drove away from the prison, looking behind her every few minutes to see if she was being followed. Seeing no one, she let out a sigh of relief and kept going. She knew she couldn't waste any time, because Elijah needed her.
Downtown Area – Later on...
Elijah stepped out of his car, staring at the abandoned building that Silas said he was holding Elena. He didn't know what he was going to do to get her out of there, but he knew that he couldn't let that bastard get away with what he was planning to do. He was still looking at the building when he heard the engine of a motorcycle coming toward him. Turning around, Elijah watched as the driver of the motorcycle got closer and his eyes widened when he recognized who it was. No, what the hell was she doing? When she pulled the motorcycle to a stop, Elijah approached her.
"Katerina, what are you doing here? Don't you realize that you're jeopardizing everything by escaping from prison?"
"I got a bad feeling while I was in my cell," she replied. "I know that I'm jeopardizing everything, but I was worried about you."
Elijah sighed, knowing that he couldn't argue with her. Damn her. "As long as you're here, I suppose I should tell you. Silas has kidnapped Elena and is holding her hostage in the building in front of us. He even threatened to harm her and her unborn child if any police helped me."
Katherine looked scared. That bastard kidnapped her sister? She certainly wasn't expecting this. The other thing she wasn't expecting was the fact that Elena was pregnant. She didn't know that she even had children. The only thing she knew about Elena was that she was married.
"Elena is...pregnant?"
"Yes," he replied. "She's expecting her second child. Well, technically, it's her third, because she already has twins." He sighed. "In either case, that doesn't matter. What does matter is getting Elena out of there before any harm comes to her."
"Let me help you," said Katherine. "True, we're estranged, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if my sister was hurt in any way."
"No, Katerina, I'm afraid I must discourage you from doing that," said Elijah. "I can't risk you getting hurt."
"I want to," said Katherine. "I'm tougher than I look, you know."
Elijah sighed again. Damn it, why was she insisting on helping him? Didn't she realize that Silas was dangerous?
"Very well, if you insist on coming with me, I must advise you to stay near me at all times."
"There's no way I'll leave your side, Elijah," said Katherine. "I love you and I'd be devastated if I lost you. That's why I came to you, to help you. And, as much as it pains me to say it, I'd also be devastated if Elena were to be killed. Something tells me that Damon would also hate me forever if he lost his wife to a madman."
Elijah nodded. "Well, we shouldn't waste any time. Since you're now a fugitive, Silas won't think you're with the police."
Katherine nodded as well and took his hand, kissing his lips softly. "For luck."
Elijah returned her kiss, hearing her giggle against his lips as he dipped her. After a few minutes, he returned her to a standing position and they walked into the building, determined to find Silas and get him to let Elena go. As they walked in, Katherine looked all around her, just like she did when she broke out of prison earlier. The place was deserted, but there seemed to be an eerie, uneasy feeling all around them. Elijah noticed that she was nervous.
"What is it, Katerina?"
"Do you get the feeling that we're being watched?" she replied. "This place may not be as deserted as you think it is."
"Come to think of it, I do have that feeling," said Elijah. "Somehow, I think that Silas is watching us. He might have eyes all over the place." He looked up at the camera. "See that camera up there? He might be watching us through this camera."
Katherine looked up at the camera and growled. "Shit, you're right, he could be watching us with that security camera. Bad enough I was always being watched by those damn cameras back at the prison, but I'll be damned if I let some psychopath watch me with a camera as well."
"Psychopath? Why, Katerina, you flatter me."
Silas' voice startled them both and when they turned around, they saw him approaching them, accompanied by Tyler, who held Elena tightly to him, his hand clamped over her mouth. Katherine blinked when she saw his face.
That's what he looks like?, she thought. Why does he look like Detective Salvatore's brother? This doesn't make any sense.
Elijah was just as confused. "I don't understand. Why do you look like Detective Salvatore's brother?"
"I know, it's confusing, but to honest, I don't know myself," said Silas. "But, the fact I look like Stefan isn't the reason we're here, is it? I believe we're here because I lured you here using Elena as bait."
At the mention of Elena, Katherine said, "Speaking of Elena, let her go right now! She has nothing to do with this! True, she's been looking for you since your murder spree began, but you didn't have to take her hostage like this, especially not when she's also pregnant!"
Silas smirked. "Oh, I think not. Why, this is the most fun I've had in a long time."
"You monster!" said Katherine. "I don't care if you are a dead ringer for my brother-in-law, you're going to die at my hand! Hell, I also don't care if I get another twenty years added to my sentence should I kill you!"
Silas laughed at her. "You're welcome to try, Katerina, but you forget that I can kill your sister with so much as a snap of my fingers."
Katherine growled at him and, before Elijah could stop her, she lunged toward Tyler, causing him to let go of Elena, who barely managed to avoid landing on the floor. She saw what Katherine had done, and although she didn't know why she was here, she decided not to question it and headed over to Elijah.
"Thank God you got here."
"I wasn't about to let you get hurt," he replied. "Besides, Damon would have my hide." He nodded toward Katherine. "Am I wrong in guessing that she's here to help you, even though she's supposed to be serving her sentence?"
"Yes," said Elijah. "Katerina convinced me to let her help me."
Elena nodded and turned around. "Could you untie me? I want to help you too, even though you did come here as a rescue mission."
Elijah nodded as well and untied her and gave her a spare gun he had on him. Elena smiled in gratitude and aimed it at Silas, earning her a growl, especially since he wasn't expecting this at all. He then said, the growl still evident in his tone, "You little bitch!"
"This is what you get for kidnapping an officer of the law, you asshole," said Elena. "I have a feeling that you're going to be facing some serious jail time for this, as well as the murders you've committed." She took a quick glance over at Katherine, who still locked in battle with Tyler, and winning, from the looks of things. "Tyler is going to face jail time as well, for not only being an accessory to murder, but also for the shooting of my husband, Detective Salvatore!"
Elijah took out his gun and aimed it at Silas as well. "I'm inclined to agree with Detective Gilbert, Silas. You and Tyler are under arrest for murder, kidnapping, and even attempted murder." He nodded to Elena. "I'll let you put the cuffs on him."
A smile on her face, Elena grabbed Silas rather roughly by the arm and took out her handcuffs, locking both of his hands behind his back. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you can't afford an attorney, one will be provided for you."
"Before you ask, yes, I understand my rights as you have read them to me," said Silas. "And I also don't care about being sent to jail, especially since there is no jail that can hold me. I'll find a way to break out and get my revenge against you, Detective."
Elena used her free hand to hit him in the gut. "Shut up, asshole!" She looked at Katherine again. "Katherine, are you done with Tyler yet?"
Her sister appeared, carrying Tyler's battered body. She had also tied him up using the rope that Elijah had removed from Elena's wrists earlier. "He's all yours, Elena."
"Thank you," said Elena. "But, I'm afraid that you'll have to return to jail because you escaped. I know that you wanted to help, but you still shouldn't have done what you did."
Katherine was about to say something when Elijah spoke up. "Actually, Elena, I think she deserves to be free. She helped you catch a dangerous criminal. Well, two dangerous criminals, if you count ex-Detective Lockwood."
"She's an escaped convict, Elijah," said Elena. "She doesn't get a free pass just because she helped to get these two assholes arrested."
"That may be so," said Elijah. "But, don't forget, you'd still be in their clutches if she hadn't decided to help me rescue you. So, therefore, I think she deserves her freedom. Surely, you can't deny that she's capable of being a good person."
Elena sighed. Shit, I can't believe he's actually standing up for her. "Okay, okay, I see your point. Fine, Katherine won't have to return to jail. But, I'm only doing this because you're insistent on it, and because I know that you have a rather...special relationship."
Elijah smiled. "Thank you, Elena." He gasped then. "Oh, I just remembered that I promised to call Detective Salvatore and let him know that you're all right."
"Let me handle that," said Elena. "You can escort Tyler and Silas out of here."
Elijah nodded and took Tyler and Silas out of the building, Katherine following them. Once they were outside, Elena took out her cell phone and dialed the hospital. When she got the reception desk, she said, "Yes, can I speak to my husband, Damon Salvatore, please?"
The nurse at the desk then patched her through and after a few minutes, Damon picked up. "Hello? FBI Guy?"
"No, it's me, Elena."
"Elena?" her husband replied. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"
"No, I'm okay." She placed a hand on her belly. "We're both okay, actually. Thanks to Elijah and Katherine."
"Katherine? But, she's in jail. How the hell did she help you?"
"She escaped and came here to help Elijah," said Elena. "Don't ask how, because I don't even know." She sighed. "Anyway, both Silas and Tyler have been arrested for their crimes."
"Thank God," said Damon. "The families of their victims will be happy to know that the ones responsible for the deaths of their loved ones are going to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I'm only sorry that I couldn't be there."
"Don't worry about it," said Elena. "The most important thing is that Silas and Tyler are going to jail for a very long time." She sighed again. "I'm glad that the case is finally over. Maybe after you get out of the hospital, we can do what we talked about. You know, retire from the force and move away?"
"I'd like that," said Damon. "I guess I'll let you go so that you can do what you need to do."
Elena nodded. "Yeah. And I'll come by to see you at the hospital afterward." Before she hung up, she added, "I love you, Damon."
"I love you too, Elena," said Damon. "I'll see you soon."
With that being said, Elena hung up and exited the building, heading out to Elijah's car.
