Clove laid on her bed staring at the ceiling. She watched her fan spin round and round not caring that it made her dizzy. She didn't feel anything after what had happened two weeks ago. She didn't eat or move from her bed. All she did was sleep and shower and from the sounds of it that's what the other girls were doing as well.
Her mom had let her stay home for the last week after the event. She knew it was hard and said she didn't have to go. The principal had also given the girls a week of homework free. But now it was Sunday and her mom was making her go to school the next day. Now matter how much she protested, her mom wouldn't budge. Her grades were still counting and she was waiting to get her acceptance to her University, which would be with drawled if they started to slip her mother would tell her.
But Clove didn't want to think about school. She didn't even think about that fact that spring break was happening in a week, it wouldn't feel the same without Kat. She had been the hospital for two weeks now. Her state hadn't changed, she got no better nor worse. She had been put into an induced coma. The doctors had said her brain had so much bleeding they had no choice. When Clove had gone to see her the next day after she got out of surgery she looked like a lifeless corpse.
She had huge gashes along her face with stitches from where the glass had smashed into her face. Her right eye was covered by a bandage where the glass had gone though. The doctors said they did all they could for her eye, but they didn't know if she would lose it until she woke up. And it didn't sound like she would be waking up anytime soon. She had tubes and needles stuck everywhere in her body. Her hand, arm nose and mouth, Clove couldn't stand to look at her. And she hadn't been back to see her since that day. She got updates from Peeta who was there everyday.
She had been put on life support to keep her heart going, it had stopped twice and the doctors were to scared to let it beat on her own. She was only going to get better once she started breathing on her own again, and according to the doctors; that wasn't going to be for a while. That is if it ever happened.
She kept staring at her white walls and spinning ceiling fan. Her eyes followed it ever so closely until it became a blur and her eyes crossed. She shook her head and closed her eyes letting her vision set back in. She draped her head over to the side to look over at her school bag that side at the side of her desk untouched. She looked away from it and checked the time. It read six ten. Her parents were probably having dinner by now, they knew better than to call her with the state she was in. Most would call it depression, she called it grieving.
Clove closed her eyes and thought about Kat. She wanted nothing better then for her to get better, but all she could think was bad thoughts. She thought about her not getting better, being stuck in a coma for years like some people, and maybe not coming back ever again.
She let the thoughts ease her mind as she slipped into her own coma of darkness. The next thing she awoke to was her phone ringing. She read the time on her clock it said two-thirty in the morning. She checked the caller ID and it said it was Jackie. She quickly answered the phone quickly and quietly and than slipped down the stairs and out the door.
On her way out she snagged a box of her dads cigarettes and his lighter from his coat pocket. And on the way down of her driveway she popped on into her mouth and lit it. She spotted Jackie and Glimmer standing at the end of her yard with huge coats one. Each one had deep circles under their eyes and their hair looked like it hadn't been washed or styled in over a week. This was the first time Clove was seeing them since the accident and tomorrow they would all have to walk into school together.
"I thought you only smoke when your drunk" Jackie said as Clove met them and they started walking down the road. It was pitch black everywhere only light came from the street lamps.
"Ya well I'm grieving" she said as she took the cigarette out of her mouth and blew the smoke into the air behind her.
Jackie took her hands out of her pocket and stuck one out at Clove. "Ya well so am I, so hand one over" she dropped the box in her hand as she lit one.
They stopped at the corner, where the park benches were. They sat down remembering how they used to sit here all the time. All of them. Glimmer sat on the bench eyeing Clove. Clove turned to look at her as Glimmer reached out and grabbed the cigarette from between her mouth. "Give me that" she said as she stuck it in her mouth and took a deep inhale, slowly letting the smoke out as she handed it back to Clove.
"So what are we going to do about tomorrow?" Clove asked inhaling another hit. "My mom won't budge about letting me stay home"
"Mine either" Jackie said finishing the bud as she dropped it on the ground.
"I say we go in there and not talk to anybody, but our boyfriends. We don't look at anybody, answer there questions, nothing. Then after school we go to the hospital to see Kat"
"I don't think I can do that" Clove said dropping the cigarette on the ground as she blew out the final puff of smoke into the cold, dark night.
Jackie turned to Clove. "You haven't seen her in two weeks" she protested.
"You think she can tell when I go to see her?" Clove said before realizing that was the wrong thing to say. "Look... I just don't want to go back there to see her all hooked up to those tubes and wires. It doesn't look like her"
"Then what are we going to do?" Glimmer questioned.
"How about this. We see how tomorrow goes, and if its okay we go to see her. I just don't want a bad day at school and then go there to see her in bad condition"
"Fine" Jackie said. "Deal"
Clove woke up to her alarm on her phone. It was Monday morning and she had to get ready for school. She Copland taste the cigarette in her mouth from last night so she ran to the bathroom and took a good shower. After she brushed her teeth, dried and styled her hair and then dressed. he went in all black today, very suiting for her mood.
She had told the girls she was going to drive herself that morning. She got into her car without saying a word to her parents as she left. They sky was grey and gloomy that morning, it matched her mood and clothing choice for that day. She wished the drive to school was longer as it would have given her more time to think but she soon found herself pulling into the parking lot of the school. The kids around her knew it was her car.
She normally drove with Kat, but today Clove pulled into her and Kat's parking spot. In her car without Kat. As she climbed out and grabbed her bag, people all around her were whispering and looking at her. She rolled her eyes as she slung her bag onto her shoulder and headed into the school.
She kept a strait face and looked strait ahead as she walked into the school and strait to her locker. Cato was there waiting for her as she approached. He kissed her on the forehead as she hugged his waist.
"Thank God you came back. The last week without you has been hell here"
She sighed as she pulled away to open her locker. Ignoring the people who stared at her and Cato as they walked by. "And I have a feeling today is going to be worse than hell. Now that they three of us are back its going to be like a freak show here"
"That's not true" he said kissing her another time. "And I'll be right here all day. Nothing bad is going to happen"
She smiled up at him before she took off for her class. The day was a burr of words and colours. She didn't follow anything her teachers said or anybody who passed her. By the time the last bell rang, Clove was almost running out of the school doors towards her car. She stopped when she saw Peeta leaning up against her car.
"Hey" she said slinging her bag over her shoulder and flipping her black hair out of her eyes.
"Hey can we talk" he said.
"Sure whatsup?"
"I need you to come to the hospital with me"
She sighed as she unlocked her car throwing her bag into the bag seats.
"Peeta..." she started.
"Look" he said cutting her off. "Nobody else will come with me. She needs someone else other than me going to see her everyday"
Clove thought for a minute before sighing. "Okay I will go see her"
"Great and can you drive us there? I came with Thresh this morning and he has to stay after school"
"Sure get in" she said as she got in and started the car. Peeta jumped in the passenger seat and they took of on the road.
Cloev entered the hospital and a pain hit her stomach. Last time she was here, she got the worst news of her life. That her best friend might not make it. What if it was even more bad news?
Clove and Peeta got into the elevator and headed up to the fourth floor. Clove wanted to get in and get out as fast as she could possible but when they got into her room to find it empty she thought it was going to be another game of musical rooms. But luckily there was a doctor next door and Peets grabbed him before he left.
"Kat Everdeen..." he said flipping though a clipboard. "Ah yes, she's in testing right now" he said.
"Testing? Testing for what?" Peeta asked. His arms crossed over his chest.
"Her eye. She had a piece of glass pierce it"
"Ya we know that part, but why are they testing anything. They said they couldn't do anything until she woke up" Clove said cutting Peeta off from asking the same question.
"Yes, but that is the thing. She woke up this morning, out of her coma, the bleeding in her brain stopped and is being drained as we speak. Her recovery is amazing, we didn't think she was going to make it" the doctor said smiling.
"Wait... she woke up?"
"Yes, a few more weeks in the hospital and then she should be as good as knew. She's going to be just fine"
She was going to be just fine.
So what did you guys think? Shines some light on this gloomy event doesn't it?
