A/N: Here is the final chapter of Blood Secrets. Thanks to those of you have stuck through and continued to read even though I drop off the face of the earth from time to time. I do want to continue Chase's story if you all are still interested in reading it. Thanks again!
Revelations
Two hours later I found myself sitting in Sookie's car in the parking lot of Fangtasia. I was still in shock. I felt as though someone had punched me in the stomach and knocked the wind right out of me. I didn't know what I was going to do. The thought of me getting pregnant had never occurred to me and I felt silly for not being responsible. There was another life that I was going to be accountable for and I was barely surviving my own. I swallowed the lump that formed in my throat and looked at the entrance to Fangtasia. I dreaded going back inside just like I dreaded the thought of how I was going to tell Alcide and Eric that I am pregnant and one of them was the father. I briefly considered going home, but knew that I had to return Sookie's keys and Eric still had my keys and phone somewhere.
I reluctantly climbed from the car and walked inside the building, hesitating when I saw Russell awake. Sookie sat in Eric's throne, flipping through a magazine, her foot swinging casually. Russell's eyes locked on me and I noticed that he looked as if he had been crying. His eyes were bloodshot and puffy and tears and snot still ran down his face. He shifted once he saw me, sitting up straighter and clearing his throat.
"Ms. Morgan," he greeted me. "Perhaps you have more common sense than your wretched blonde friend Ms. Stackhouse."
I frowned at him. Sookie set the magazine aside and rose to her feet. "Shut it Russell," she said stepping off the platform Eric's throne sat on. She approached me carefully. "Are you okay, Chase? You look pale."
"I'm fine. What's been going on in here?"
Sookie glared at Russell. "Russell and I had a little chat and he learned he should keep his mouth shut."
"This wrench poured the love of my life down a garbage disposal!" Russell barked back.
"Yes because you thought you could bring him back using Chase's blood or power you sick freak!" Sookie retorted.
"What?" I said in confusion.
"Ignore him Chase. He is delusional."
Russell huffed, his blood shot eyes turning on me. "You both are dead women walking," he spat. "Especially you Ms. Morgan, with your divine blood. You think your precious Viking can protect you once other vampires and supernatural beings realize just what you are and what your blood can do?" Russell paused to laugh. "The fact that the Viking hasn't drained you already just speaks volumes to his self-control, but it is only a matter of time before he kills you, rips you open and drains the essence within you. And if he doesn't do it first, some other creature will. Even the humans are a danger to you. If they knew what your blood could do they would lock you up and try to weaponize you, you'd spend the rest of your existence in a cage as someone's lab rat-."
Sookie stalked over to Russell, slapping him right across his face as hard as she could. Russell's head whipped to the side, more blood coming from his mouth. He spat before turning his glare back on Sookie. "That is enough out of you," she said. "One more word and I gag you."
I stood there stunned as Russell's words washed over me. As much as I hated to admit it, Russell Edgington was right. My blood and the power inside of me put me in great danger, and no matter how Eric felt about me it didn't change the fact that he could one day lose control, just as Bill had with Sookie. And if humans found out what I was and what I could do there was no stopping them from taking me. All it took was one vampire getting a whiff of my scent and I would be attacked, especially now that my powers were unleashed. I would constantly be in danger now. And that meant my baby would as well. I felt my stomach drop and I touched my abdomen, feeling as though the wind had been knocked out of me again. I was almost positive this baby would be just like me, would smell the same, and would have the same power if not more being potentially half werewolf. That meant he or she would always be in danger too, it would always have to worry. What kind of life would that be for a child? How could I protect it when I barely could protect myself? I understood why my father bound my powers and sent me away, he was trying to keep me safe, and he was trying to let me have a normal life.
"Chase, honey, don't listen to him," Sookie said snapping me out of my thoughts. "Eric would never hurt you."
Russell snorted. "I watched the vampire you claim to love, offer you up to me on a silver platter because I killed his mommy and daddy. He had no way of knowing that I wouldn't kill you. He made a bet and he got lucky that I am a delusional vampire that believed in a fantasy. He couldn't have stopped me from hurting any of you. You think that he really cares for you? You think he really loves you?" Russell laughed again, this time louder. "He cares for the taste of your blood, and you know why? Because your blood is sunshine, freedom, nirvana, hell it's the best damn thing I have ever had in all my 3,000 years on this earth. He doesn't love you, he loves to own you and the fact that you are invaluable."
My vision blurred as I glared at Russell and I realized bitterly that I was crying. Not because his words hurt me, but because he was right again. My mind replayed every moment of my relationship with Eric in my head; every single time he looked me in the eyes and lied, every time he had hurt me. How could I believe for a second that he cared for who I was as a person and not the blood that coursed through my veins? How could he really be capable of love and what did that mean for the baby I was carrying that was possibly his? Could he really care for this child or would it just be considered another piece of his property?
Sookie snatched a dish towel off the bar and stalked over to Russell and tied it around his mouth despite his protests. "That is enough out of you," she growled.
She came back to me and took me by the shoulders forcing me to walk to one of the booths in the far corner of the room. I slid into the booth, feeling dazed and nauseous. Sookie went back to the bar and returned with a glass of water, setting it down in front of me before sliding into the space next to me. My hands shook as I picked up the water and gulped it down hoping it would soothe my stomach. It didn't.
"Chase, are you alright? You look like you're going to faint."
I nodded, feeling unable to speak.
"Look, you can't listen to Russell, he's just trying-."
"I'm pregnant."
The words came out of my mouth before I could stop them. It felt weird saying the words aloud. I drank more water.
Sookie looked at me as if she had seen a ghost, her mouth hanging open for a few seconds before she found the ability to communicate again. "What?" she breathed.
I set down the glass. "I'm pregnant," I repeated. It still felt odd.
Sookie blinked. "By who?"
I laughed. I don't know why, but I did. "I don't know," I breathed. "I'm pregnant and I don't know who the father is." It wasn't funny, but I couldn't stop chuckling. "It's either Eric's or its Alcide's, either way Im fucked."
Sookie shook her head in disbelief. "It could be Alcide's or Eric's? How is that even possible? I mean Alcide, I get, but Eric…"
"Remember Dallas? Remember when we first found out what my blood could do and Eric was human for 24 hours?" I explained. "Well during that time when he was still human we had a moment and…" I trailed off. She was an adult. She would get the gist.
"Oh…Oh…" Sookie said, realization coming over her face. "But that was barely even two and a half weeks ago, how can you know?"
"I don't know. I took a test, it came back positive."
"Is that where you just went?"
I nodded.
"Chase, what are you going to do?"
I laughed again. "I don't know. I don't even know whose it is," I answered with a shrug. "I need to see a doctor, but they are going to want to run tests and then they will find out I don't have a blood type and who knows what other weird things might show up on the test and then I will be in a cage somewhere getting weaponized just like Russell said."
Sookie took a deep breath, gazing off in thought. "What about the doctor that helped me when I got scratched by a maenad? Maybe she has some experience with supernatural babies…?"
I had forgotten all about Sookie's run in with the maenad and the tiny woman doctor that had helped her. "How am I supposed to get in contact with her? I doubt she is in the phonebook."
"You could ask Eric," Sookie offered tentatively.
The thought made my stomach turn. "I can't do that Sookie. He'll want to know why."
"So you don't plan on telling Eric you might be carrying his baby?"
"Not until I am entirely sure that he is the father. And you can't tell anyone Sookie. Promise me that you won't. It could put me and the baby in danger."
She nodded quickly. "Of course, Chase. I won't tell anyone."
I heard the sound of the entrance door opening and turned to see Alcide walking in. He looked around the bar before noticing me in the booth. His face fell and he frowned for a moment before looking relieved. I rose to my feet, feeling butterflies in my stomach. I met him halfway going into his open arms and burying my face in his chest, surprised at how comforted I felt to be in his arms once more. He squeezed me tightly, his head dipping low to kiss me. I didn't hold back, I kissed him passionately, reveling in the feel of him against me before remembering we were being watched by Sookie and Russell. I withdrew from his kiss and cleared my throat.
"Where the hell have you been? I've been calling ya'. I was worried sick," Alcide demanded.
"I know. I'm sorry. How did you know I was here?"
"I didn't. Northman called, he said he would settle all my dad's debts if I came to help him," Alcide answered. He looked at me skeptically. I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. I saw his nostrils flare. "Are you alright? You look and smell…different."
"I'm fine," I lied. I wasn't ready to tell him anything, not until I knew for sure. I changed the subject hurriedly. "And I am sorry that I didn't call. Eric took my phone-."
Alcide frowned. "Eric took your phone?"
I sighed. "It's a really long story."
Alcide raised one eyebrow expectantly. "Chase, what happened?"
Alcide wasn't happy. I could tell from the frown on his face. I sat opposite him at the bar, he was drinking a beer, and even though I wanted a drink I was drinking water. Sookie sat at the end of the bar to give us some privacy, she was chatting with Ginger who had showed up for her shift and was cleaning up behind the bar.
"So let me get this straight, you came here without telling me, and Eric locked you in the basement with the intention of giving you up to Russell to save his own skin. Then you escaped with help from one of fang bangers and Sookie; and then Russell and Eric caught you again and then Russell and Eric fed on you, now Russell is human and Eric doesn't want to kill him because a ghost told him not too?"
"Yes, in a nutshell," I answered with a nod. I had left out a few things on purpose, like what had almost transpired in Eric's office before he locked me up.
Alcide shook his head, taking another swig of his beer. "I really don't like my girlfriend putting herself in danger," he said looking me in the eye. "You're going to have to start staying out of trouble," he added with a smirk.
I couldn't stop the butterflies that fluttered in my stomach at him calling me his girlfriend or the smile that spread across my face. How do you think he will like his girlfriend being pregnant by her ex vampire lover? The little voice in the back of my head asked. I had to resist the urge to glower at myself.
"The situation with Russell is over now," I said glancing at Russell. "I have no idea what Eric is going to do with him, and I don't know want to know, but I have a feeling we won't be seeing him ever again. That means your girlfriend is safe for the time being and I plan to stay far away from vampires."
For my child's sake.
Alcide didn't get the chance to answer as the door marked employees only swung open and Eric sauntered through. Pam and Bill followed closely behind him and suddenly there was tension in the room. My throat tightened at the sight of Eric, and Alcide sat up straighter eyeing the vampire as he moved around the bar. Eric's expression remained blank while he surveyed Alcide and me.
"Good. You're here," Eric commented heading towards Russell as he donned gloves. "Your truck out front?"
"Yep," Alcide answered rising from the stool. "What's the plan exactly?"
"I'll explain in the car," Eric answered distractedly undoing Russell's chains. He hadn't bothered to remove the gag.
"Well how long is it going to take?" Alcide asked irritably.
"At least a couple hours," Eric answered.
Alcide frowned. I slid off the stool and approached Eric clearing my throat. "Would you kindly return my keys and cellphone that you took from me?" I stopped a short distance away and held out my hand.
"They are locked in my office. Pam will retrieve them," Eric said, not bothering to look at me.
"Can we go?" Bill demanded. "I have things to do. Sookie, you stay here, Pam will protect you."
Sookie shook her head. "I've had my fill of vampires for the foreseeable future. Im going home. I feel better protecting myself," she said walking toward the door. She paused and turned back to everyone. "I rescind the invitation into my home for all vampires present. Chase, are you coming?"
I hesitated. "I have to get my things. I'll call you when I get home."
She nodded and headed out of the door, leaving Bill and Eric, who dragged Russell by the chains still around his neck, to follow toward the door. Pam stepped forward, her hands on her hips, irritation heavy in her voice.
"Eric, do not bring that thing back in here."
Eric paused at the door with Bill, turning to look at Alcide who hadn't moved. Alcide came towards me, cupping my cheek. "I'll come over when Im done with all of this," he said passing a lingering kiss on my lips.
I nodded and watched him go, noticing that Eric stood at the door, watching the interaction. When Eric's eyes met mine I felt a pull in my stomach. I ignored it and turned to Pam instead, not bothering to watch them leave. She looked at me blankly.
"I will get the keys and phone," she started turning on her heel.
"Pam, I need a favor," I said.
Pam paused. "A favor? What, are we girl pals now? Did I miss some memo?"
"No," I said stopping her with a frown. "I need…" I hesitated. "I need the number to that doctor that Eric knows. The one that helped Sookie when she was attacked by the bull human."
She turned back to me, one eyebrow arched. "Dr. Ludwig."
"Yeah, her, can you give me the number?"
She didn't say anything for a long moment, just stared me down with dark eyes. I felt uncomfortable under her gaze, like she was looking right through me. "What for?" she questioned finally in her monotone voice.
I felt my cheeks redden. "It's personal."
Pam studied me for a moment longer and turned her back on me, walking to Eric's office. "I'll get you the number."
I felt relieved when I pulled into my drive way half an hour later, finding my home just as I had left it. I went inside, locking the door behind me and turning on the lights. I set my keys down on the table near my door. I pulled Dr. Ludwig's number from my pocket and picked my house phone off its cradle. I felt nervous as I dialed the number hoping that Dr. Ludwig would be able to help me. I began to pace as I heard the first ring, freezing when she answered on the second.
"Speak."
"Uh…hi is this Dr. Ludwig?"
"Who else would it be? I don't recognize your number so I assuming you got my number from a reference."
"I did. Eric Northman. You helped my friend who was attacked by a maenad?"
There was a brief pause on her end. "Oh yes, the blonde. Who is this?"
"My name is Chase Morgan and I was hoping that you could help me," I said quickly. "I'm uh…well…I-."
"Spit it out already, I haven't got all night."
"I'm pregnant," I blurted finally.
"And?"
"Well...I can't go see a regular doctor because well… Im not exactly human…and there's a possibility that the father of my child is either a werewolf or a vampire…"
Another pause. A long one. I checked the phone to make sure she hadn't hung up.
"What is your address?"
I gave it to her slowly, allowing time for her to write it down.
"Do you have cash on you?"
"… How much cash exactly?"
"Never mind I will send you a bill. I will be there within the hour. Change into loose clothing."
The line went dead before I could answer and I stood there for a moment contemplating what was about to happen. I felt anxious and nervous suddenly and I had to swallow hard a few times to stop the urge to throw up. I considered calling back and telling her not to come out of shear fear, but I knew I had to do this. For one I needed answers; I needed to know if I was really pregnant and I needed to find out just how far along I was which would give me an indication as to who the father was.
I finally regained my composure and hopped in the shower, wanting to wash the day's events away. I followed her instructions and put on a loose t-shirt and sweats before throwing my hair up in a bun. I set about tidying the place up a bit and jumped at the sharp knock on the door that came forty-five minutes later. I rushed to the door.
"Hi Dr. Ludwig."
She didn't greet me, she merely gazed up at me to take in my appearance before stepping past my threshold, holding a large black medical bag in one hand and what looked to be like an oversized bulky laptop in the other. I shut the door behind her and locked it, turning to find her already heading down the hallway towards the bedrooms.
"Which room is yours?" she asked. I followed her down the hall and pointed to mine. She motioned to the bed which I hadn't bothered to make. "Lie down, lift your blouse."
I did as I was told and I did it quickly. She didn't strike me as a woman with a lot of patience. My heart started to pound as I lay back against my pillows, lifting my shirt to expose my stomach. Dr. Ludwig came to stand beside the bed, placing the medical bag on the ground and the machine beside me on the bed. She opened it and I realized that it was an ultrasound machine. She pushed a few buttons and the machine whirred to life.
"There is nothing to fear, none of this will hurt," she said, not bothering to look up at me while she rummaged through her things. "When was your last period?"
"Umm…" I tried to remember, with everything that had gone on I had lost track. "I had one last month, in the beginning of the month I think. I can't remember the dates."
"You're sure?" she asked, looking at me finally over her shoulder.
I nodded. "Yes."
"And you don't know who the father is."
I blushed in embarrassment. "Well…umm no, but-."
"While I am usually not surprised by many things working in the supernatural world I was surprised to hear you say that a werewolf or a vampire could be the father," she said shaking her head slightly. She turned back to me, holding a bottle in her hand. "This will be cold," she warned. She squirted blue gel onto my abdomen, and she was right it was cold. "Vampires, as I am sure you know, are dead and are incapable of procreating and werewolves usually can only impregnate other werewolves." She picked up the wand placing it on my abdomen applying more pressure than I anticipated. "You said you aren't human though and it's not unheard of for a werewolf to get a shifter pregnant. Are you a shifter?"
"No, Im..." I hesitated. I wasn't sure that I should tell her what I was. I wasn't even sure I should be trusting her.
"As your physician I am bound to keep all your information confidential," she said after my pause, her eyes on the screen facing away from me as she moved the wand around on my skin.
I took a deep breath. "I'm half witch and half fae."
Dr. Ludwig froze for just few seconds, her eyes never leaving the screen. "I see. Well then there's no telling what is possible with you as I have never experienced one of your unique kind before. Just what makes you think it is possible for a vampire to be the father?"
"Well… there was a brief twenty four hour period where he was…human and we had unprotected sex. He has since returned to being a vampire."
Dr. Ludwig didn't even blink at that information. She finally stopped moving the wand and I saw her eyes squint as she studied the screen. "You said you had a period last month?"
"Yes."
"Hmm…when did the unprotected sex occur?"
I hesitated again. "With…?"
"The vampire."
"Two and half weeks ago."
"And the werewolf?"
"Well just a few days ago-."
"Well I think you got your dates wrong dear," Dr. Ludwig cut in. She turned the monitor to face me and I stared at the screen unable to make out anything. "See this here," she outlined something on the screen with her finger and suddenly I saw it, my child, on the screen. She adjusted the wand on my skin once more and the position changed, showing the fetus from another angle, allowing me to see its heart beating quickly. My heart skipped a beat and I felt my eyes water. I was really pregnant. There was life growing inside of me. "That is your baby," Dr. Ludwig continued. "But judging by this you're nearly eight weeks along."
"Eight weeks?" I said in confusion. "That's two months. That's not possible. Two months ago I was a virgin!"
"You're sure?"
"Yes!"
"I'll have to run some tests. I will need a blood sample," Dr. Ludwig pushed a few buttons on the machine before shutting it down and putting the wand away. She handed me a towel as I continued to sit there dumbfounded. "I am not sure how long Faes gestate as I have never encountered a true fae before, full or half. Fae babies might gestate a little faster than normal humans. Also with the baby potentially being half vampire or half werewolf that might also influence how fast it develops. How much vampire blood have you ingested in the past weeks?"
I almost laughed. I had, had a lot of vampire blood in the past weeks both Eric's and Bill's considering I had nearly died more than once. "A lot."
"That might be a factor as well. While I haven't encountered a lot of pregnant woman who ingested vampire blood regularly, considering the healing qualities it possesses it could very well cause an acceleration in fetal growth," Dr. Ludwig commented.
"Wait…did you say the baby could be half vampire?"
"Yes, if the child's father is the vampire."
"But…he was human at the time of conception."
"He still would have had vampire blood in his system and in his very DNA which would affect his sperm. The child could very well be half vampire. But to be honest we won't know until it's born, there is no telling what qualities and powers it might possess."
She took the towel that I had used to wipe the gel from my stomach and handed me a slip of paper. I looked down to find it was not a slip of paper, but a sonogram photo. My throat tightened. "So that means we can't use the conception date to pinpoint who the father was?"
"No," Dr. Ludwig said with a shake of her head. "We will have to do a paternity test."
That was going to go over really well with both candidates. "Can we do that before the baby is born?"
"Yes, the procedure can be quite painful for you and there is the risk of miscarriage, but it can be done. I will need DNA from the vampire and werewolf."
"DNA?" How the hell was I supposed to get that?
"A hair will do, Im sure you could easily manage to get one from both without them knowing," she said with a wave of her hand. "Are you considering terminating?"
I blinked at the question, my face falling. "No. I… I'm…No," I answered. The circumstances were not ideal, but the thought of not having the baby had never crossed my mind.
"Very well. You will need to get some prenatal vitamins and be sure to rest. I would not suggest ingesting any more vampire blood unless you plan to have this child in the next few months. After I have run some tests I will know more information. Have you been experiencing any symptoms?"
"I've been experiencing nausea and fatigue."
"Perfectly normal," she said absently. "I expect you will experience normal human pregnancy symptoms as well as a few abnormal ones. If you start to experience weird cravings, such as a craving for human blood or raw meat call me."
I grimaced. "That could happen?"
"It's possible. Can I take the blood sample now?"
I nodded and held out my arm, sitting quietly while she drew two vials of blood from me. She promised to run some tests and contact me with any information. If I wanted to do the paternity tests I would have to get the DNA for her or wait until my child was born. She said she would provide my prenatal care in home, for a fee, of course, and to call her once I had made up my mind about everything. Dr. Ludwig cleaned up her equipment and I thanked her for coming before walking her to the door. I stood on my porch watching her drive off before looking down at the sonogram still in my hand. I had hoped that she would have answers for me, but she had only left me with more questions. I still didn't know whose child I was carrying. I was also carrying a baby that was developing at an abnormal rate and I wasn't sure whether it was because I was fae or because of the vampire blood.
My phone vibrating in my pocket snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Hello?"
"Hey, it's me," I recognized Alcide's voice. "I'm on my way over."
"Oh okay. I'm home," I said sitting down on the steps of my porch. "How long till you're here?"
"Forty-five minutes or so. Everything alright? You sound…worried."
I paused. I didn't realize that I was allowing so much emotion to seep into my voice. "Yeah… I'm fine… I just…" I stopped again. I had to tell him. The secret was beginning to burn me up inside. I didn't know how I was going to explain, but he had to know. And so did Eric. I would just have to tell them both and we would have to come to a conclusion together. I wanted to start over with Alcide. I wanted to move to Jackson and pursue whatever it was that we had, and if the baby was his it would make it that much easier. But I also still loved Eric, there was no denying it. And I highly doubted Eric would want a werewolf playing step dad to his child. How crazy would I look taking a vampire to court for custody rights?
"Chase?"
"We need to talk," I uttered quickly.
"Uh oh," he replied with a sigh. "When a woman says that, it is not a good sign."
"No, it's not bad…well I don't know. We will talk when you get here," I said pushing a stray strand of hair from my face. "Everything is fine."
Alcide didn't seem convinced. "Okay I will see you in a bit."
I hung up the phone and turned my eyes back to the sonogram, gazing at the gray photo before scrolling through my contacts to dial a number I wasn't sure I was prepared to dial. Pam answered on the second ring, sounding gruff and irritable.
"Fangtasia. What do you want?"
"Pam, its Chase. Is Eric in?"
"Speak of the devil. Hold."
I heard the sounds of an exchange and then Eric's voice. "Speak."
"Eric, we need to talk," I said hastily before I changed my mind.
"About?"
"Not something to be discussed over the phone. Can we talk tomorrow?"
"Meet me at Fangtasia immediately after sunset."
I nodded. "Great."
I hung up before he could say anything else or question me further. I felt the anxiousness return and rose to my feet turning to go back inside when a bright light flashed behind me illuminating my front porch. I turned quickly and stopped when I saw Emilia standing in front of the steps to my porch. She smiled diffidently as I looked around confused. I was definitely awake, this was not a dream.
"No, Chase, you aren't dreaming. I am truly here, but only because the time has come," she said walking up the porch steps.
"What are you talking about? How are you here?"
"You know now, you know that I am telling the truth, you are with child," she said motioning to my belly. "You know that I am real and it is no longer safe for you on this realm, you must come with me for your safety and the safety of your baby."
"I can't just leave-," I started.
"Chase," she cut in stepping towards me and grabbing my arm. "There is no time to argue. We must go now."
I opened my mouth to protest, but a white light burst around us blinding me. I felt a pull behind my navel, like I was being yanked out of time and everything went black.
