Elphaba had been with Glinda all night, but she had to leave the bed at some point as much as she wanted to hold Glinda in her arms. Reluctantly, she got up to get herself ready for the day, although she doubted she'd be going anywhere. The blonde had woken up once and Elphaba remembered just how desperate she wanted food. The poor woman had literally been starving. She got Nessarose up to go get Glinda something to eat. Nessa had come back with a smoothie which Glinda drank hungrily. However, Nessa had to continuously take it away from her when she drank it too fast. Elphaba had scolded her sister for doing so, but Nessarose explained that this wasn't the first time it happened and Glinda had made herself sick when she ate or drank too fast after going a few days without food. "She always does this," Nessa had said. "She literally starves herself for days and then wakes up wanting to eat. I think it's a power control thing; like she has the power to refuse food for a while. It's strange, but people do that when they feel like they're…well, powerless."
Elphaba sat at the edge of the bed, Glinda not even stirring. The raven haired woman wondered how Glinda's mind worked. She wanted to know what she was constantly thinking or intending to do. She had come across the bandages on her arms. Nessa explained that Glinda must have clawed and scratched at her own skin. Again, this wasn't something new that she did. When Elphaba had looked at her arms, Glinda sleepily said, "I'm sorry, Elphie. I didn't mean it."
Elphaba had replied, "Don't be sorry, my sweet. I know you didn't." That had made Glinda sleep easier, she thought, because she hadn't woken up since. Elphaba would sometimes check for a pulse to make sure the love of her life was still alive. Indeed, she was, but it was obvious she was weak from barely eating and sleeping. Everything was taking a toll on Glinda, and it was almost becoming too hard for her to keep up on a day to day basis.
"Hey, Elphaba," Nessarose said when she entered the room. "You have a minute?"
"She's still sleeping," Elphaba whispered. "I don't want to leave her in case she wakes up."
"Okay, but I need to tell you something. It's urgent. Is she really asleep?" Nessa replied quietly.
"She's out like a light," Elphaba said. Nessarose sat beside Elphaba on the bed carefully. She bit her lower lip, looking at the ground as she avoided Elphaba's gaze.
"I think I know what's wrong with Glinda. It took me a while, but I finally found something that describes her."
"What are you getting at?"
"I should start from the beginning. I have a degree in psychology-"
"I know," Elphaba interrupted. "Boq told me last night."
"I had a feeling he knew. Anyway, I came across this book one night when I was trying to find something. I knew Glinda wasn't mentally right, so I researched it." Elphaba just noticed the book Nessa was holding in her lap. It wasn't very thick, maybe only two hundred pages at most from what she could tell.
"What do you think?"
"She isn't crazy," Nessarose said. "I refuse to call her that because she isn't. But I think she has something like what was described in this book. It's a few cases and the whole psychology of this isn't formalized yet, but I think this author here is an expert. Maybe if we find him, he can help Glinda much more than I can. The only thing is, I don't know how Glinda will react to it," she explained.
"Is there a name for whatever it is you think is wrong with her?" Elphaba asked her little sister.
"The doctor calls it multiple personalities. It's hard for me to understand, to be honest. But basically there's more than one person living inside her body. That's the best way I can describe it. I couldn't find anything else other than this book on it," Nessa said, gesturing towards the book.
"I've never heard of that before," Elphaba said to her.
"I think that after Dr. Dillamond's funeral we bring it up to her. I think I'm going to contact this doctor and send a letter to him. I think he can help her, Elphaba. I think he can bring the real Glinda back," Nessarose said and took her sister's hand in her own, squeezing it slightly. "I want to hug you right now, but I know you hate hugs." Nessa looked at her. Elphaba let her walls drop for a moment and hugged Nessa. She felt Nessa's arms wrap around her and she honestly felt herself enjoying the physical contact that she had been deprived of for many years and her childhood.
"Thank you so much for taking care of her," Elphaba whispered. "I appreciate you doing what I couldn't do."
"I love you, Elphaba," Nessa murmured.
"I love you too, Nessa," Elphaba replied.
"Well, I'm going to be lazy," Nessa said once Elphaba broke the hug. "I'm going to lay in bed all day. I haven't done this in forever!" the Governess exclaimed, but quietly, so as not to wake up Glinda.
"You enjoy that," Elphaba chuckled as Nessa smiled, leaving the room with her book to go do nothing. Elphaba looked at Glinda and smiled when she saw her begin to wake up. She had been sleeping for practically an entire day. She stretched, pushing herself up to sit. She reached over to the water on her nightstand to take a sip before stumbling into the bathroom. Elphaba wondered if that was Glinda, or a personality thing of hers. The whole thing Nessa tried to describe to her was strange as she had never heard of it before. Either way, she'd treat each one like how she'd treat Glinda. Maybe that would meld them all back together? Elphaba really had no idea for the first time in her life.
"Good morning, Elphie!" Glinda said and sat in her lap to hug her, something she used to do while they were at Shiz. And how did Elphaba not notice this as a sign of affection?
"Good morning, Glinda. How are you feeling today?" Elphaba asked her.
"Much better, thank you. And thanks for saving me. I don't know why I did that. I didn't even think I was capable of that," Glinda said, referring to her trip to the mountain with a frown.
"It's okay. Just promise me you won't scare me like that again. I worry about you," Elphaba replied.
"I worry about myself, too," Glinda sighed. "Elphie, I can't explain it, but it wasn't me who ran away like that. I was protesting it, but she wouldn't stop. Neither of them would stop," Glinda admitted.
"Who's she? Neither of them?" Elphaba questioned. Perhaps Nessa was really on to something.
"This is me, Elphie. But the other two aren't. I don't know who they are and how it's even possible." Glinda continued to speak and Elphaba noticed Nessa who was standing in the crack of the doorway, her mouth wide open but she didn't dare make a sound. "I don't even know why they exist, Elphie. I hate it!" She began to cry in frustration while Elphaba held her close.
"It's okay, Glinda. Everything will be fine. Nessa and I will make sure you get better."
"And you'll get rid of them for me?"
"We will do our best, my sweet. We will figure something out. But for now, why don't we go have breakfast, hmm?"
"Can I have toast with jam and butter on it?" Glinda asked in a small voice.
"Of course, Glinda. You can have whatever you want." She rested her chin on Glinda's head and looked over at her sister with wide eyes. She mouthed the words write to the doctor with urgency. Nessa slowly nodded, slipping out of the room to go start writing.
So sorry for not posting this chapter sooner. I won't bore you with all the details, but I literally had no time to do anything. Anyway, I hope this chapter makes up for it! As always, thanks for reading and reviewing!
