Bobby was next, it happened while I was at the police department. There was a call of gunfire at the salvage yard. Everyone looked at me as they were sending out two squad cars. We all knew what they'd find.
But I held out, I waited until a police woman came up to me and told me in a very soft voice that Robert Singer has passed away more than an hour ago. His body was being taken to the hospital as she spoke. I didn't say anything. There were two people left outside of my actual family that he could get to.
"I need you to do something." I walked up to the same woman who had told me about Bobby. She looked up, confused.
"What is it?"
I leaned my forearms on her desk and my head dropped, "Charlie Bradbury. And Missouri, you know her right? Well I need you to bring them here. Fast." I hope she had heard me, and when I look back up I see her nodding to herself.
"Alright, is there anyone else? Anyone that he might think you're close to?" she stood up and waved to a few other police men. "Find Ms. Missouri, and," she looked at me, "Charlie Bradbury?" I nodded at her and she almost smiled. "Bring them here. Dean had warrant to believe that Lucifer would go after them next. And for God's sake pull Sam Winchester out of school. I can believe that he can miss one afternoon of classes." She sat back down and put her head in her hands. She looked back up at me, "Anyone else?"
At the mention of Sam I immediately thought about Jessica. "The Moore's. Sam's girlfriend is Jessica Moore. She's at the hospital. The fire."
The woman nodded her head. "Might as well bring in her parents and station a guard outside of the girls room." Again she waved over two police men and they quickly hurried away. I started to wonder how she had this much authority, until I looked at her name tag on her shirt and it read Sherriff Mills. "In that report, about the fire. I'm starting to think that the man she saw was him."
"I was just thinking that." We sat there for a while not talking, until I couldn't keep it in, "How come you didn't come to the house that day I got back. Or the day my mother-"
"I was out of town, my son he- Well I had to make funeral arrangements." I look down at my hands in my lap, this town is just going to hell.
Few minute she gets up and grabs something off her desk. I look down at my phone, then at the last text that Jo sent me Hey fuckface answer your damn phone, I know you need to talk even if you think you don't. Just please let me help. We never decided on what we wanted to do for Spring Break. It started tomorrow.
When the Sherriff came back she was carrying two Styrofoam boxes, "Did you eat today?" she sat one down in front of me and she say back down in her chair.
I poked the box and lifted the lid. It was my favorite, a cheeseburger. "I ate at Bobby's before he sent me home."
"Why'd he send you home?" she opened her own box but looked back up when I didn't answer. "You don't have to answer this; I'm not interrogating you right now."
"I know, I just…I had a panic attack while I was working on my car, I hit my head pretty hard and he made me go inside, he finished working on my car then he came in and made me breakfast." I wasn't going to mention what he said about my mother, or about Ellen. I felt like that belonged to him. And besides, no one else needs to know.
"How's your head?" she sounded genially concerned so I told her I felt fine and she picked up her burger, I copied her. "Sometimes, when I think about my husband and son I have to remember that at least I had my time with them. I like to think that living with this pain is better than not have knowing them." I want to point out to her that knowing these people is what got them killed. Instead I open my mouth and chew my food. It's not long after that that people start piling into the building.
The Sherriff sets down her food, barely touched and starts explaining to them what it is that they're doing here and why it's imperative that they cooperate. Sam makes his way over to me and I see that his eyes are puffy.
I don't bring it up.
When Charlie gets free of the police she runs over to me and I almost fall down from the force of her hug. "Oh my god Dean everything is going to hell." I pat her back and she seems to hug me a little tighter before letting go. "But look at me blubbering like a baby." She steps back and messes up Sam's hair. "I think you're almost taller than me." She looks down at her feet then back up to me. "So I have some movies on my tablet-" Charlie pulls her backpack off and pulls out her Ipad, "I was wondering if you wanted to get your minds off of everything for just a little bit."
I look over to where my dad still stands next to the Sherriff. I can see that he's angry, but at least he's not yelling. Everyone seems to have their attention focused on the adults so I nod and sit down on Charlie's left side and Sam takes her right. "So how do you even have all of these movies?" I watch her as she scrolls through what seems like an endless list.
"I kind of, well I sort of," she looks around the room and leans in real close to my ear, "I illegally downloaded them." I look at the cops, that are everywhere and I smile at her. Of course she did.
