AN: Happy Canada Day everyone!(even if I'm not Canadian) The chapter is short, but I had a 'mini' chapter that was as long as a regular chapter so I figure its even now. Hope you like it!
There was a tap on his shoulder. Matthew turned, surprised, and smiled when he saw the familiar face. "Hey, Gil."
The German grinned, Gilbird giving a happy "cheep "from his perch atop the mop of silver hair. "Hey, Birdie." He paused and smiled wider, if that was possible. "Happy birthday!"
The Canadian blinked, for a moment frozen to where he was standing. He was still surprised at times when people wished him a happy birthday, even if this was Gilbert. Or maybe it was because it was Gilbert that he was so surprised. Slowly, a smile began to spread across his face. "Thank you!" He sounded like a six year old, but he didn't care. It was better than someone forgetting that it was his birthday. Much, much better. A gazillion times better.
Gilbert laughed. "Sorry you have to get stuck at a meeting for it, though."
He shrugged, the smile never leaving his face. It was better than being alone for it. Though Alfred usually never let that happen nowadays. It didn't matter how busy his brother was, he would always come over at some point. Speaking of which… where was he?
He glanced around the room, not finding the familiar blond hair or cowlick anywhere. Hm… Maybe Al was- Oh, nope. His brother just walked through the door. Alfred smiled at him, waving, and he waved back.
As he made his way towards Alfred, Ludwig announced that the meeting would be starting. They made their way to their seats, though Matthew was disappointed that they weren't seated next to each other this time. Al smiled at him across the room and the Canadian couldn't help but raise an eyebrow.
Alfred was planning something. What was he planning? Matthew only spent a minute or two trying to debate it. Shrugging to himself, Matthew sat down and waited for the meeting to begin. He was sure he would find out soon enough.
Ludwig stepped up to the podium a couple of moments later and was just about to say something when-
"Hey, Ludwig."
Everyone turned their heads towards Alfred, Ludwig's serious face shifting to an annoyed expression.
"…yes?"
Alfred smiled. It wasn't exactly mischievous, only simple. "Can I sing something real quick before we start?"
Ludwig sighed, bringing a hand up to the bridge of his nose. His jaw clenched, like he was going to shake his head or try and deny the request, but only sighed.
His brother grinned and took that as a yes, giving a loud "whoop" as he sat straighter. He met Matthew's eyes and amethyst eyes widened, suddenly knowing what Alfred was going to do. The American smiled and, for once, didn't take his phone out. Instead he began singing, his smile widening, "Happy birthday to you…" His voice was a medium volume, going with no tempo but his own. "Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday dear Matthew-"
He grinned. "Happy birthday to you!"
Matthew couldn't help it. He laughed. Even if he knew what Alfred was going to do he felt so incredibly happy that he might explode. This was great! Despite being perfectly fine with the day ending right then and there Alfred started again.
"Happy birthday to you…" He glanced around the room and, to his surprise, others joined. Francis, Feli, Jett, and Gilbert all came in with his brother. "Happy birthday to you…"
More nations entered into the mix and by the time they came in with his name all of the nations, in one form or another, were singing. He couldn't help glancing around, eyes wide, shocked. This seemed like the rarest event he had ever witnessed, and he had seen some strange things. "Happy birthday dear Matthew… Happy birthday to you." The end of the brief song was met with relative quiet and several nations were smiling at one another.
He wanted to say thank you, but he couldn't get his mouth to work. It only stayed open, sometimes closing for a second or two before trying and failing to form anything. Instead, he met Alfred's eyes and thought it, to which his brother grinned, nodded, and relayed the message to the others.
To their amusement, Alfred tried to continue, along with Gilbert and Jett, with the extra lines that kids sang, but Ludwig stopped them before they could get through too many.
Gilbert pouted, his smirk threatening to resurface."Aww, bruder… Come on. It's a tradition."
Ludwig rolled his eyes and shook his head. Matthew could not stop smiling for the rest of the day.
