A few days later, Wednesday night, the tots were all in bed asleep while Jade sat in the living room smoking as she watched TV. A knock on the door interrupted her peace. She sighed standing up going over to the door. She unlocked and opened it to a surprise.
Zeek: Hey babe, I'm home.
Jade stood frozen for a moment. The blunt burning in her mouth brought her back to reality. She took it out blowing smoke in her ex's face.
Jade: What the hell are you doing here?
Zeek: You thought you were finished with me? Huh?
Zeek forced his way into the house, Jade fearfully took steps back. Zeek cornered her into the wall. He took the blunt from her to smoke it.
Jade: Zeek, you need to leave.
Zeek: You think because I was locked up it was okay to fuck one of my mans?
Jade: We're not fucking together and he paid for it.
Jade tried pushing Zeek away, his strong force wouldn't allow it.
Zeek: We're not over Jade. I told you, you're my bitch.
Zeek shoved Jade against the wall before moving away. He looked around the house observing the toys scattered.
Zeek: (chuckles) Don't tell me you got those crying brats back.
Jade: Get out of here. Leave.
Zeek: You're giving me some tonight.
Jade: No. Just get the fuck out or-
Zeek stormed over to Jade, he held a tight grip on her neck.
Jade: O-okay, but you have to leave after.
Zeek released his grip and pulled Jade from off the wall. He pushed her ahead to walk to her bedroom. Jade didn't try to fight back. She allowed Zeek to do his business. He was rough on her, she occasionally moaned out in pain. When finished, Zeek left the house. Jade curled up in bed feeling afraid and ashamed.
The next morning, Jade woke up early to take a shower before the tots awakened. They were still asleep when she got out. She got dressed and went to the kitchen to make coffee. Her hands shook as she dialed a number on her phone.
Beck: Hello?
Jade: Beck, I need you to come get the kids.
Jade's voice cracked as tears fell from her eyes.
Beck: What's wrong? Are you okay?
Jade: Please come and get them when you leave work.
Jade hung up not giving Beck a chance to respond. She poured herself a cup of coffee and added two spoonful's of sugar. She sat in the living room drinking her coffee. It wasn't long before the tots were awake. They came out their room with smiling faces, rushing over to Jade. She couldn't help but smile when they crowded her legs wanting hugs. Jade hugged them all.
Jade: Go sit at your table and I'll give you some cereal.
The toddlers all raced away to the kitchen. Jade sighed and took a sip of her coffee. She stood up and went ahead to the kitchen to prepare their breakfast.
Cat: Stop Robbie, that's mine!
Cat snatched the small toy car away from her brother. He started to cry.
Jade: Cat, give it back to him.
Cat: No. It's mine, him can't have it.
Jade walked over and took the toy away from Cat to give back to Robbie.
Jade: You're going back to bed if you take something else away from someone.
Jade went back over to the counter, pouring cereal and milk into bowls. She placed the bowls on the tables.
Andre: Yay, circles.
Tori: Thank you mommy.
Jade: You're welcome, sweetie.
Trina: No, I don't want this kind.
Trina pushed her bowl away only for her mother to place it back in front of her. Trina started to cry.
Trina: (crying) I want the other kind.
Jade: There aren't any more frosted flakes. Eat your breakfast.
Trina cried starting a tantrum. Jade sighed grabbing the toddler from her chair. She carried her off to the bedroom and placed her in bed. Trina only cried louder kicking her blanket off the bed.
Jade: When you're finished, then you may come and eat.
Jade walked out the room leaving the screaming toddler alone. She sat in the living room drinking her coffee and watching TV. After a moment, she went to go check on the four remaining tots.
Jade: Cat, you don't need two spoons.
Cat: It's mine.
Cat had taken Trina's spoon, Jade's not gonna bother taking it back. She shook her head.
Robbie: Mommy, look. This is how doggies eat.
Robbie demonstrated the new thing he's learned.
Jade: That's nice, can you eat with your spoon?
Robbie took his head from the bowl.
Robbie: But I'm a doggy.
Andre: You're not a doggy.
Robbie: Yes I am.
Jade took a napkin, she went over to the small table wiping Robbie's face.
Andre: Mommy, is Robbie a doggy?
Jade: No, he's only pretending.
Tori: I wanna be a doggy too.
Tori got down from her chair to the floor. She crawled around making dog sounds.
Robbie: Nooo, I'm the doggy.
Robbie got down from his chair to copy Tori. Andre and Cat both followed. Jade took their bowls from the table. They ate what they could, she doesn't expect them to eat every bite. She poured it all down the sink.
Jade: You need to brush your teeth and take off those diapers.
Tori: It's not a diaper.
Andre: I'm not a baby.
Jade: Go to the bathroom and take those off.
The tots all crawled out the kitchen continuing to bark like dogs. Jade went after them to the bathroom where she helped them each out their used pull-ups.
Tori: Can I have toothpaste?
Andre: I want some too.
Jade: What do you say?
"Please", the tots all said in unison. Jade gave them their toothbrushes with toothpaste and left them to brush their teeth. Not really. The tots only play around with their toothbrushes. Jade went to go get Trina. She had settled down from her tantrum and was playing with her brothers' trains.
Jade: Are you ready to come and eat breakfast?
Trina looked up and nodded.
Jade: Take off your pull-up and go sit in your seat.
Trina pulled up her nightgown to take off her used pull-up. She gave it to Jade and ran out the room. Jade walked over to the bathroom to throw it away.
Jade: Alright, that's enough, you're finished.
Robbie: I want some more.
Jade: No, you've had enough.
The tots handed Jade their toothbrushes and went off to play. Jade gave Trina another bowl of cereal in which she ate with no complaint. Jade was sitting in the living room drinking a second cup of coffee when knocking came from the door. Jade put the mug down in a panic. She peeked out the window and was relieved to see Beck's minivan parked in the driveway. She went over to answer the door.
Jade: Aren't you supposed to be at work?
Beck: I got a sub. You sounded so upset on the phone, I rushed over.
Jade: Let me get them dressed.
Beck: What's going on?
Jade: Something came up and I need to deal with it.
Beck: Deal with what?
Jade: You ask too many damn questions.
Beck: I'm trying to figure out why you called me crying to come and get the kids.
Jade sighed rolling her eyes.
Jade: It's nothing for you to worry about.
Trina: Daddy!
Trina ran from out the kitchen hugging Beck's legs. He reached down picking her up.
Beck: Hi, princess.
Trina: I ate all my circles.
Beck: Good job. Go to mommy so she can get you dressed.
Beck passed Trina over to Jade, she carried her away to the room. Beck waited while Jade got the tots all dressed to leave. When she finished, Beck gathered them all outside to put into their car seats. He took his time strapping them all in then closed the back door. He went over to Jade standing on the porch.
Beck: Do you want me to bring them back tomorrow?
Jade shook her head.
Jade: I'll call you when they can come back.
Beck: Is everything okay?
Jade: It's fine.
Jade went back into the house closing the door in Beck's face.
