AN: I'm not dead, I swear! I'm sorry, I've been so busy with senior year and having serious motivation issues. Here's a new chapter. The song is 'Just like Me' by Falling In Reverse. Please enjoy!
Disclaimer: The song belongs to Falling in Reverse and Hetalia belongs to Hidekaz Himaruya.
Mathias glanced around the meeting room, half tuning out the chatter and half trying to pick up the conversations. They were on break and it had been a little while since anyone had brought up a piece of music. Not really that odd when he thought about it. The Dane briefly wrapped his hands around the phone in his pocket, smiling to himself.
"If you're going to sing, you may want to announce it soon," Lukas muttered to his right, flipping through a few of his notes.
Smile only growing, Mathias nodded. He (loudly) cleared his throat and the nations around him paused, causing the others in the meeting room to follow suit. He took his phone from his pocket and held it up, looking towards both Berwald, who was hosting the meeting, and their friendly neighborhood warden Ludwig. "There's a song I want to sing later if that's alright with you."
Berwald only gave a nod, his stony expression hardly shifting. Though, it did look like he was a little relieved. Ludwig sighed and nodded as well, but by now he had to be used to this. And it wasn't like he did anything to stop them anymore.
Mathias nodded, feeling pleased with himself, and the meeting slowly picked up the pace. There were a few speeches here and there, a break or two… Okay, actually, it was pretty boring. He started to get antsy after around forty five minutes, and when the waiting slowly reached over an hour they were definitely pushing his limited level of patience.
Lukas half rolled his eyes next to him, and Tino sent a small smile his way. The meeting was close to being over. It wouldn't be long… The other nations were starting to take notice, though. Occasionally, Gilbert would send him a curious look, and it looked like his anticipation was starting to effect everyone esle. Usually they looked forward to the song at the end, but now they were exited.
The minutes seemed to drag on, one after the other. Mathias had to look at the clock every now and again to make sure Lukas wasn't magically setting it back to annoy him.
And then, finally, the last presenter concluded. They sat, and everyone looked towards him.
Mathias's smile came right back. He set his phone on the conference table, and pulled up his song. There were a little last minute nerves, but those had nothing on him. The song was way too much fun to back out, and well… he probably should have said this stuff a long time ago, anyways.
He pressed play.
An electric guitar popped in immediately, and a strong, "Na na na na… Na na na na… Na na na na na naaaa naaaaaaa," started in the background. The lyrics came in almost as fast.
This was gonna be fun… He met the other nations' eyes, grinning. "I am aware that I am an asshole-" Their expressions shifted, quickly becoming confused. It was obvious that nobody had been expecting that to come out of his mouth. He continued, hardly missing a beat, "I really don't care about all of that though."
A few of the nations cheered and clapped. They seemed to relax a little. Ah, back to normal. Regular old Denmark here.
Yes and no, actually. Oh, were they in for a surprise.
Mathias embraced the parts of himself that others didn't like- maybe because the other nations didn't know him well enough to look past what they saw in the first place… and that was why he loved these lines so much. His voice rose as his sang them, the pride showing in his voice. "I've got nothing to prove! And honestly I'm just like you."
The guitar continued shortly, louder than before, and he tapped his foot to the beat. The nations watched him, waiting for him to continue, and he did. This was just a conversation between him and his fellows… Mathias leaned forward against the table in a casual manner, his voice taking on the same tone, amusement right there with it. "I've got a bad case of A.D.D…"
The rest of the room collectively nodded, and the music agreed with a loud, "uh huh!" from the background.
"I've been this way since seventeen…" The Dane gestured to himself, as if he were regaling the group with some exiting Viking tale. "I've got a-" his smile widened. "-fucked up brain and a really bad attitude..! I blame it on my drug abuse..!" He shrugged nonchalantly, and a few of the nations laughed. Others, like Lukas, were staring at him and most likely wondering what he was on.
Mathias continued, looking at his audience, "So," And here it came. "You don't want to be too close to me 'cause you might see my broken heart..!" His smile hardly faltered, even though the expressions around him did by no small measure. Uncomfortable to say or not, the song kept a light beat and that was exactly what he planned to do himself. "I am aware that I am an asshole! I really don't care about all of that though!"
Too soon to stand, he reminded himself, so tempted to do the opposite.
"I'm living my life the way that I want too, and you can't deny that honestly I'm just like you..!" He met a few pairs of eyes as he sang it. No one could deny he was right, and some of the nations were beginning to get into it. Alfred and Gilbert were grinning along with him, clapping along, and he was relieved to see that more of the nations were following. Some of the others were joining in with the "Na na na na na"'s that added back in.
Mathias repeated, his anticipation returning the further he got into the song, "Just like you…" He waited a moment. "Just like you…" There was a brief pause, and he finally got his chance to stand. For a moment, his smile fell a bit. "I've been so lonely for the longest time…"
The sarcastic voice in the background that reminded him of Lukas chimed, "uh huh..."
He was suddenly grinning again. "They tell me that I'm such a loveable guy."
"Yeah right."
He briefly glanced towards the Norwegian, but, as always, his expression was practically unreadable. Emil and Berwald were much the same. Oh well, he mused. Not the time. "I get blamed-" "Blamed" "'cause I'm off my meds," he trailed off, expression changing to one of mock confusion. The smile kind of ruined that though… "…or could it be just something I said?"
Mathias slowly started moving towards the front of the table. He had been sitting near the back, but he was headed towards the front where the presenters and speakers had done their thing. "Cause you don't want to be too close to me 'cause you might see my broken heart…!" His head started bobbing to the beat and he had to fight the urge to laugh. "I am aware that I am an asshole, but who the hell cares about all of that though! I'm living my life the way that I want to, and you can't deny that honestly I'm just like you!" There was a brief pause.
"Na na na na… na na na na… na na na na na…"
"Just like you…"
"Na na na na… na na na na… na na na na na…"
"Just like you…" Another pause. He was closer to the front now, but not quite there. He kept the other nations' eyes. "And I'm always stuck in some bad luck- I'm just a boy who's angry at his mom..! And I hope in fact she breaks her back the moment I step on this crack!"
He had reached the front now. The ones who had been seated there had made way for him. Mathias placed his hands on the table and stared everyone down, but it was all in good nature. He kept smiling, despite the lyrics he had just sang. He kept moving forward. That was just what he did. "And don't tell me I'm not worth it… 'cause you are far from perfect." His voice continued to rise, and let out a laugh, his posture beginning to relax. "I am aware that you are all assholes!" He shrugged and raised his arms, as if to dismiss everything. Yeah, we are all assholes, aren't we… "Who the hell cares about all of that though?!"
Everyone was smiling, even the normally stoic nations. Hell, even Lukas and Berwald were in their own ways.
The music picked up again. The guitar returned, and when the chorus came back it wasn't only him that was singing it. Gilbert was singing just as loudly- and maybe even more obnoxiously- "I am aware that I am an asshole! I really don't care about all of that though!" Now Mathias could really get into it.
They continued, and, even though they hadn't planned it, Alfred joined in too. "I'm living my life the way that I want too, and you can't deny that honestly I'm just like you!"
He went on, and the other nations joined in. "Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na."
"Just like you…!"
"Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na…"
"Just like you..!"
Na na na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na…"
"Just like you!"
They all sang it once more together and the song ended. Before the Dane could rush over to pause his phone, Lukas took care of it for him. There was a pause before the Norwegian looked to the other Nordics with a-dare he say- fond smile. Clapping erupted, followed by cheers. Mathias bowed none too modestly, grinning and laughing. He was happy to see that his enthusiasm had rubbed off on them.
Yeah… They may all have been assholes, but they were his assholes. And, like it or not, he was theirs.
AN: Thank you so much for reading! I had a lot of fun with this. Let me know what you think and I'll see you next chapter.
