The next morning dragged by. 'L, I can't walk...' Light was starting to feel the consequences of his actions last night. L smiled slightly. 'I'm sorry...' and picked Light up bridal style to carry him to the bathroom. 'We can't do this all day...' Light moaned, but didn't want to be put down anyway. Walking felt like something ripping him in two from behind. Painful.
'How about we work in the bedroom today?' L suggested.
Reluctantly, Light replied. 'We can't, we have to interview Akira about the Second Kira, remember?'
'Oh, yes you're right. We'd better get ready then...'
A few hours later, the two of them arrived at the prison where Akira was being held, and were soon in an interviewing room with top security. They'd decided to leave the trio at home to have the day off. They'd worked hard yesterday and earned some rest.
Light got quite a shock when he walked in. The man that they'd arrested had completely transformed. His stance had become closed off and reclusive, completely different to the open and sexy guy he'd been before. Prison Orange really wasn't his colour...
'Akira.' He greeted, nodding his head.
'Light Yagami...' he greeted back, minus the nod. His blood red eyes were cold.
'You have to realise that what I did was for the good of the law. It will do you no good to be controlled by this other Kira. Fair enough, I went the wrong way about it, I'll give you that...' Light tried to explain, sitting opposite of Akira.
'What do you want? You've already convicted me, what else do you want from me?' His words were more like hisses.
'Information. And not for free, either. For each useful piece, we'll take a year off of your sentence. Right now, you're bordering on a death sentence.' L interjected, putting a sly arm around Light's waist.
'Fine. What do you want to know?' Akira folded his arms and sat back in his chair, his expression dull.
'Why don't we start from the beginning...'
Soon, the concepts of the Death Note had been explained and proved. All that was left was the identity and whereabouts of the other Kira.
'I honestly don't know them. They've only ever contacted me through letters, which I was told to incinerate after reading. I don't know their name, their location or even their age or gender. They just told me what to do.'
'When did you last receive a letter?' L queried, biting his thumb.
' 2 days before I was arrested.'
'Did you incinerate it?'
'No, there was a note on the front telling me not to open it for 72 hours.' His gaze dropped to his knees.
'Where is it?' L's grip on Light tightened significantly, the two of them closening.
Akira's face contorted. 'Are you two seeing each other?'
'That's none of your concern. Your sentence is down to 10 years. I'll make it 4 of you tell us.' Light blushed and let Light answer for him.
'Fine. You'll find it with the Death Note under the floorboards of my bedroom.' He got up and walked towards the exit, where guards were already waiting with the handcuffs and blindfold. 'Are we finished?' he asked, glancing back.
'Yeah.'
As he was being handcuffed, the criminal turned his head, grinning. 'L you're some lucky guy. Light was the best bit of stuff I ever had...' With that, he was blindfolded and led away.
L practically kicked the forensics out back at Akira's apartment. Watari in tow, they went into his room and pulled up the floorboards with a crowbar. Sure enough, the Death Note was there, along with a thin white envelope embellished with black ink. Watari bagged up the notebook, being careful not to touch it with his bare hands, and handed the envelope to L after making sure that it was safe.
'Are you ready?' he asked Light, grabbing his hand. This could be the end of the Kira case.
Together, the opened the envelope.
It read:
Akira,
I trust that you made the exchange with your shinigami in order to acquire the shinigami eyes. I'm going to enclose a list of people that I need you to get rid of for me. You should be able to see their names easily. I know it's hard at first, almost maddening that you can get so much information from just one glance. But just try to persevere, one day we'll have removed our obstacles and we can take it from there. Maybe then I can trust you enough to reveal my identity. Maybe. Please understand common procedure assuming that you're caught. It's just too risky to let you live if they get their hands on you. You know too much. I know if you haven't incinerated the letters you know. So let that be a warning. Note that I too have the shinigami eyes, and can kill you in a heartbeat. Yours sincerely Kira.
The only thing was, that letter was sent 4 days ago. Another lay on the porch, embellished similarly to the previous one. It was delivered just hours ago, according to the forensics.
'Akira,
Gone to you is the light of day,
Soul gone to rest in the world of grey.
Your life is reaped by my hand
Your heart stops at my command.
To you Akira, I bid farewell,
Fear not, I'll continue raising hell.
Your funeral bells, I hear them chide.
I'll see you on the other side.
-Kira.
L looked up at Light and they raced to the car, heading back to the prison at top speed. When they got there, it was a race against time. The three of them pushed and shoved their way through guards and prisoners alike, Watari weilding two shot guns. The prison was a labyrinth, but they were soon at Akira's cell. They knocked. No answer. The door was kicked down. Akira was sprawled across the floor, his blood red eyes rendered lifeless, an eerie smile plastered on his face. One hand clutched his chest, where his heart was. The other clenched around his own neck. He lay there, dead.
