Authors Notes
Sorry it has been so long since the update. Life's been... busy, and I really hadn't found inspiration to write this story. I finally have a beta reader so, hopefully, I would be able to continue this story until the end... which, right now, means Kalos... fun.
I am having trouble with one MAJOR detail. I have sent up a poll to see which is popular. Now, if my beta reader would like the detail a certain way, I might not do the more popular vote but I'm at that point in time were I can't continue the story until I know what's going to happen.
Gary is denied his Trainer's License because his parents want him to focus on being a Pokemon Researcher like Professor Oak. Gary wants to raise and battle Pokemon but he doesn't want to leave Ash. Should he run away or stay?
Here's the preview of the Rewritten Pokemon story Spoken Eyes; Indigo Wounds [it might be rewritten/edited better]
"Gary Oak! We are done talking about this! You will not be going on a Pokémon Journey and will instead stay here and learn to become a Pokémon Researcher!" the voice of his mother says, her voice raised high. Gary wanted to argue back at her but his father entered the room at that moment.
"Why are your voices raised? You know Marin Navy/Aqua Blue needs his rest for the big day tomorrow." He completely ignores his other son's reaction to hearing about their favorite child.
"I just don't see why I can't travel with Pokémon! Everyone else has!" Gary says, even though he knew better than to get into an argument with his parents. His parents seem a bit frustrated with him.
"Gary, we've talked about this…" his father started, almost tiredly. But Gary shakes his head violently in disagreement.
"You talked about this. You, Mom and your pal, Red, talked but you never listen to me!" he meant to say it as a way to show his frustration. He meant to show that he has dreams too. He didn't mean to insult anyone or put blame on them. But the moment those words left his mouth, he knew his parents would see differently.
"You, ungrateful, little…" his father started. It looked to Gary that his father is going to hurt him. But his father wouldn't do that… would he?
"Blue, calm down," he heard his mother say. She put her hand on his father's shoulder but his father just pushes her off.
"No, I won't calm down Green!" Blue says, nearly yelling. He looks at his wife but points a figure to Gary. "Everything we did to make sure he has a future is putting to waste because he's jealous of his brother! I won't take it anymore!"
Gary runs to his room by then. His mother trying to calm his father down with his father saying how much they had sacrifice to make sure he had a good life and a good future. He'll go on how Gary is jealous of his brother because he doesn't have the natural talent his brother has. He'll even implied it's Gary's fault their perfect life isn't so perfect, that Gary is the problem. They always compare the two and the favorite the other one, no matter what Gary does to please them.
The thing is they didn't do this to their twin daughters, who are a few years older than Gary and his twin, and are pretty successful in their own right. Daisy, the eldest, is working for their grandfather as an assistant while May is working to become a nurse. But they had a chance to be trainers and not be forced by their parents to be something they aren't sure they want.
As he enters his room and locks the door, he thought about his father's outburst, not the words just his face. Gary never thought his father had a short temper. He knew his mother sort of has one but not his father. He always seemed so calm, like the water Pokémon he specializes in. But like the forest hides dangers in the leaves, the water is a powerful force not to be underestimated. To think it took him this long to notice.
"Evu?" a small, yawning voice brought Gary out of his thoughts. He looks on his bed to see his sleepy friend on the bed. His grandfather thought he needed something to take care of, though his parents had been reluctant to agree. On his birthday one year his grandfather gave him a Pokéball and a newborn Eevee had been inside it.
Gary refused to let his brother take care of it, no matter what his parents said. Professor Oak had to put his foot down and says this Eevee is Gary's responsibility alone for the parents to back off. Marin Navy wasn't happy until their father gave him a Water Pokémon. Marin didn't care for it, though.
"Hey, girl." The Eevee bounded over to him when he spoke. Gary didn't care if he was crying at the moment. It felt like the whole world wants him to be something he doesn't feel like he should. He wished his parents would open their eyes and see he isn't happy.
"Evu?" the Eevee spoke as she tries to lick the tears off his face. Gary laughs at this. She always makes him feel better.
"I'm sorry, they wouldn't budge," he tells her. The Eevee's ears dropped once she learned why he's so upset. He laughs to himself, about something he should have noticed sooner. Marin[e] Navy; Aqua BLUE, Fern Olive; Leaf GREEN and Burney Crimson; Fire RED. They had planned on those three to be the next Kanto Trio since birth! They had to have been. Why else name them like that?
And if those three are the next Kanto Trio; where does that leave him, Ash and Ash's other sister? He studied better than Marin. He knows more about Pokémon than Marin and yet Marin was the one with the special treatment. What would happen to them, the remaining three, once the new Kanto Trio leaves? Is trying to be something different then what they want really his fault?
He is brought out of his thoughts when he hears something landing outside the house. He peeks out the window to see both of his parents climbing on Red's Charizard. Once the Charizard is out of sight, probably taking them to the League Line-up Battle, Gary rushes around his room.
"Evu?" the Eevee spoke while tilting her head. She is wondering why he is moving around his room like this. She watches as Gary grabs the backpack Ash gave him for his birthday before the incident that caused Ash to be like he is. Gary pushes the memory aside for now; he has things he needs to do and remembering the past wasn't going to help.
"They wouldn't budge, but I refuse to let that stop me," he tells her when he put the bag on his bed. The Eevee seems to understand as she jumps excitedly on the bed before darting around the room. She grabs items he needs for his journey; a flashlight, a map, his medicine bag, and other things.
It didn't take long before Gary had everything he needs in his bag, including change of clothes, some Pokéballs, all of his money and an emergency kit. He plans on running away, changing his name and getting a license elsewhere. Before he zipped the bag up one last time the Eevee jumps on the bed with something that reminded him of Ash.
Flashback One
"Ash! Hey, slow down!" a young Gary said as he nearly tripped on a root.
"Come on Gary! Those Pokémon won't wait there forever!" Ash said before he ran off again. Gary wonders how the boy can run so easily while he and Serena are having trouble. He tries to pick up his pace but he tripped on another root and fell down.
"Gary? Why does Ash have to keep running like that?" the young girl asks. Gary knows she doesn't like the woods and he suspect she might have a slight fear of Pokémon.
"No clue," he says as he stood up. He turns to face her and he gave her a reassuring smile. "But today is your last day here and he wants to make it special."
"Oh." Serena looks at her feet when he said that. It was no secret she had to move somewhere but the three had agreed to keep in touch. Then she looks at Gary with a smile of her own. "I just wish he would slow down for us."
"Me two. We better catch up." Gary grabs her hand and tries to get through the tough wooded area to where Ash said he saw some Pokémon. He never let go until they met up with the raven hair boy.
Flashback Two
"Come on Gary!" Ash said as he runs through the woods with ease, again. It had been a couple of weeks since Serena left but Ash and Gary keeps coming to this place to remember her… and to get away from their siblings.
"Slow down Ash! I can't run like you ca AHHH." Gary tripped on another root. As Gary tries to get himself up, a hand grabbed his arm and helped him up. Ash was standing in front of him, looking a little guilty or shy. "Nice for you to come back and help, Ashy-boy," he teased. When Ash didn't respond Gary knew something was up. Ash HATES that nickname, especially when he uses his teasing voice.
"Are we still friends?" Ash asks while looking at the ground.
"What! Why would you ask that! Of course we are!" Gary couldn't believe Ash would think that, though he suspects it has to do with their siblings. One of Ash's sisters is great but his other sister and their brothers… not so much.
"Serena left," his raven hair friend said, still not looking up from the ground. Okay, that maybe part of it but…
"Remember what we said when we said goodbye?" Gary asks. Ash nods but he still didn't look up. "We said that no matter where we are or what happens we will always be friends."
"But Daddy said true friends never leave and Serena left!" Ash yells with tears coming down his cheek. Gary wasn't sure why Red would say something like that.
"Well, he's wrong. Grandpa says that sometimes friends need to leave so they can grow and become their own person." Gary went to hug Ash but he tripped on a root instead. He didn't have a chance to get up because Ash was suddenly hugging him, preventing him to get up. "Ash?"
"Please don't leave me," the boy cried. Gary awkwardly shifted to hug Ash back.
"I promise I will never leave you in your time of need." They stayed like that until the tears stopped flowing.
Flashback Three
Gary switched places with Ash's brother and is staying at Ash's home. It got noisy since they brought home two baby girls. Today Ash and Gary were on their way back to their special place two months since Serena left. Ash's sister, the one Gary likes, had joined them a few times and wished she had met Serena. She wasn't with them today as Red wanted to take her and her sister somewhere.
Gary tripped on another root. He was getting better at navigation the woods but he still trips more often than he likes. Ash was already ahead to make sure the Pokémon are still there. They loved watching the Pokémon play like there is no care in the world. Sometimes Ash got to join… Gary still isn't sure how the boy did that. They both hope the Pokémon would allow Gary to play today.
As Gary picked himself up, he heard electricity crackle through the air and Ash screaming as if he's in pain. Gary quickly picks himself up and ran as fast as he can. He trips on the roots but he catches himself as he keeps running to their special place.
He barely noticed the air getting thicker with smoke or the clouds forming together into rainclouds. All he cared about was getting to Ash. He saw a Raichu at the special place, looking at him with a cold stare. Gary couldn't move, something about that Pokémon was… off, and frightening. It looked like the Raichu was going to harm him but something attacked it, causing it to run off. As it left, Gary realizes their special place is on fire! Rain had started pouring but all Gary cared was if Ash, and maybe the Pokémon, are alive.
"ASH!" he yells, ignoring the thick smoke or the crackling wood or the heat of the fire. When he tried to call again, he coughed instead. He decided to just stay low to the ground and try to find Ash. The rain had picked up but he barely noticed as he crawls around. His eyes water from the smoke but Gary pushes on.
He doesn't know how long it takes him, or how many Pokémon bodies he had to crawl over but he finally found Ash. By now the fire is almost gone and the smoke is thinning. But Gary barely noticed this; just Ash and the Pokémon needs serious help, and he doesn't have it.
"HELP! Someone HELP!" he screams. Someone had to have known there is a fire here. Delia knew they were heading this way. Perhaps she had called someone? She had to, someone had to. Someone has to be near. "HELP PLEASE! ANYONE!" Someone had to know something's wrong. Someone had to be coming.
Gary felt tired. The lack of air to breath, the screaming, the fire, it had taken its toll on his body but he refused to sleep just yet. Tears fell down his face but Gary knew it wasn't the fire that made them this time as he looks at Ash's unconscious form. Gary looked for a pulse and prayed Ash is still alive. He cried on his fallen friend for a long time, begging… "Ash, please don't leave…"
Flashback Four
Gary was in the hospital for a while, being treated for smoke inhalation, dehydration and burns after they were found. They said the two had just appeared in the lobby in serious and critical condition. No one knew how they got there but both were hurried into treatment.
Gary hadn't been allowed to see Ash in the hospital. His parents made it very clear that he will not see him ever again. But his grandpa is taking him there himself. He knew how close the boys were and he thought they both needed this.
"Now Gary, I want you to remember Ash isn't well. His body had suffered a lot of damage; he isn't the boy you remembered." Gary just nods to what his grandfather was saying. He isn't stupid; he knew what damage a person can have while handling electric types. Most trainers can't handle the electric types and they abandon them. He wonders if that's why the Raichu attacked; because it was abandon.
"I know, Grandpa. Ash might not remember me, he might have limitations, and he might need to live through machines," Gary says as he tries to stay by his grandfather's side. Professor Oak looked like he wanted to say something but he didn't. It didn't take long to reach Ash's room.
"Professor Oak, Gary, what a nice surprise!" Delia says as she saw them. Gary smiles at her but he was worried she might not let him visit. Both of his parents and Red had denied it; who's to say she wouldn't to.
"Gary would like to see Ash," Professor Oak said. Delia looks a Gary with a worried look.
"Gary," she says as she bends down to his level. She looks straight into his eyes and asks, "are you sure you can handle seeing Ash in this state?"
"I'm not Marin," he said while folding his arms. He wished the adults would just let him see his friend. "I know what certain Pokémon attacks can do to a person's body." When the adults didn't budge, Gary spoke again. "I also know some humans are able to handle the attacks better than some. If Ash is still alive it means he could handle the attack."
"What's this about not being Marin?" Professor Oak asks. Gary gave a small groan as his patients wears thin.
"Marin doesn't study, I do. May I PLEASE see Ash now?" Delia and Professor Oak gave a nod and Gary rushes into Ash's room. He stopped once he was inside and can see Ash. He had prepared himself for the bandages, the machines and Ash's lifeless body; he was even expecting some twitching as he saw a grown man twitched after being hit with an electric shock. But what he wasn't prepared for was Ash's eyes looking at him, thru him.
"Gary?" Professor Oak asks. Gary turns his head to see his grandfather standing right beside him. "Are you alright?" When Gary didn't answer and just looks back at Ash, Professor Oak puts his hand on his shoulder. "You don't have to do this now…"
"NO!" Gary didn't mean to yell, he just wanted to make it clear he wants to be here. Professor Oak backed off, though he didn't leave the room. "Grandpa, what's wrong with him?"
"The attack had caused him to lose his sight…" the old researcher started but Gary cut him off.
"I know that! I mean what's wrong with HIM?" The professor and Delis looks at Gary like they don't understand what he means.
"Gary…" Delia began. But Gary wouldn't hear it.
"He isn't supposed to be like this!" he said, trying, but failing, not to freak out.
"I think it was a bad idea to let him see Ash," Delia said. Professor Oak nods his head in agreement. But Gary refuses to leave when they tried to take him out.
"WHY DOES HE LOOK LIKE THAT RAICHU?" His outburst, well, what he revealed, made the two adults stop in their tracks.
"What do you mean?" Delia asks, going to Gary's level. Seeing Delia willing to listen made Gary to calm down, though he was still freaking out.
"That Raichu that attacked… it looked like it doesn't care," he said through his tears. He is crying for reasons he's not sure. "Ash's eyes, they don't care. He doesn't care anymore."
"Oh, honey," Delia said as she pulls Gary, who is now crying, into her arms to hold him tight. "He does care. He would always care, even if he can't show it."
"I don't want to leave him. Please don't make me leave him." The two adults let him stay until visiting hours were over. Gary tried explaining to Ash that his parents and Red don't want them together but he promised to visit when he can.
End
Gary kept his promise, usually sneaking into Ash's house at night and spending it in Ash's bed, but he did his best to keep that promise. Ash never showed affection but Gary could see what Delia meant by Ash still caring even when he doesn't show it. Ash was always there when he needed someone, though his Pichu had to do everything. They never went back to their special place and Gary still can't find anything about an attack affecting people like it affected Ash.
"Evu?" his Eevee asks as she jumps on his lap and touch the item. It was a pendant Ash and Pichu won him at the fair when Pichu started caring for Ash. The pendant had the three titans in a circle. He was surprised when Ash handed it to him before leaving for another game.
"Evu?" The Eevee was getting a little impatient with Gary as he stares at the pendant. Gary figures he could bring Ash with him. But then Delia would kill him if something happens to Ash. Besides, Ash needs medical attention and his parents might find them if they look for Ash.
"Evu!" she tries to get his attention by nudging his chest but that didn't work. Perhaps he should stay. Ash needs him and he doesn't want to abandon Ash in his time of need. But if he stays then he has to follow his parents' wishes and he didn't want that.
"Eevee!" she yells as she finally had enough and she decides to bite his arm… not the attack Bite, just bite.
"Ow! What!" Gary looks at his Eevee with anger before he noticed she was trying to get his attention for a while. He reached out his hand and pets behind her ears. "I'm sorry, I was just thinking."
"Vee!" she says as she takes his apology and pet, before she breaks away and stands on his pack. Gary looks at it, once again not sure what he should do. All he needs to do it zip it up and leave, right now, and no one would notice… except Ash.
"Please don't leave me!"
"I promise I'll never leave you in your time of need."
"You will not be going on a Pokémon Journey and will instead stay here and learn to become a Pokémon Researcher!"
"Everything we did to make sure he has a future is putting to waste because he's jealous of his brother! I won't take it anymore!"
"Ash, please don't leave…"
"I don't want to leave him. Please don't make me leave him."
"No matter where we are or what happens we will always be friends."
Gary fell onto his bed with a groan. His Eevee was surprised with this and can't figure out why he laid down. He looks at his pendant again. His Eevee rubs her heard against his and he starts to pet her. Then he asks the air something his Eevee doesn't understand; "What am I going to do?"
