High above the Mushroom Planet, amongst the stars, an observatory floated peacefully. This observatory was the Comet Observatory. With bedrooms, a kitchen, garden and other various rooms you might find in your own home, the star children known as Luma's lived peacefully, under the protection of their Mother and queen. The queen known only as Rosalina.
Today was the annual story Rosalina told to her children each year. Luma of all colours and sizes gathered together in the library in front of their mother who was sat in a large, red armchair with two Luma on her lap, one Average sized for a Luma and yellow in colour and one light blue and quite small. Rosalina waited for the Luma to quiet down before reading her book out loud.
"Our story begins a very, very long time ago with a young girl. One day, this girl spotted a rusted spaceship holding a small star child."
The twoLuma on her Lap nestled into their mother closer and Rosalina smiled before continuing.
'What's your name? Are you lost?" the girl asked the star child. "I'm Luma, and I'm waiting for Mama. She's coming for me on a comet!" said the star child, who had been waiting day and night." Don't worry. I'll wait with you," the little girl promised Luma.'
The yellow Luma used it's short, stubby arms to turn the page.
"Why, thank you, Amber!" Rosalina praised her child, patting her on the head and continued again.
At nightfall, the little girl borrowed her father's telescope and peered into the sky. She looked and looked, but she saw nothing. Hours turned into days and then years, but still the sky revealed nothing. Finally, the little girl sighed and said to Luma, "If we stay here looking much longer, I'll be an old lady soon." But then she had an idea. "Why don't we go out there and find your mother ourselves?"
Amher went to turn the page of the book again but this time, the little cyan Luma pushed her out of the way and turned the page himself.
"Now, now. Play nice, Cyan." Rosalina said. Cyan dropped his head and made an apologetic sounding noise.
"It's ok, Amber forgives you." Rosalina replied. "Right, Amber?" Amber squeaked happily and patted Cyan on the back.
The girl and Luma fixed up the rusty spaceship, and then the two set sail into the starry sky. And this is how the search for the celestial mother began.
The family of star children cheered excitedly like children. They knew what was coming next.
"Days passed with no sight of the comet, or even a single planet. Instead, asteroids extended for as far as the eye could see. "If I had known it was going to take this long, I would have packed more jam," said the little girl, above the rumble of her belly."
Rosalina tried but failed to imitate the sound. Everyone, including Rosalina, laughed. This time, Amber and Cyan both turned the page together.
"Before they left, she had packed all the essentials: telescope, butterfly net, stuffed bunny, bread, milk, jam, and apricot-flavored tea, but..."
Rosalina paused dramatically.
"I forgot to bring water!" At this, Luma burst into gales of laughter, and the girl began to pout. "As long as I have Star Bits, I'll be fine," said Luma. "Want some?" The little girl couldn't stay mad after hearing this. Luma continued to laugh, and the girl couldn't help but join in. "All right, maybe just a nibble."
At this, the Luma laughed loudly as Rosalina giggled quietly and Amber and Cyan turned the page again. Suddenly, Lubba, a large, purple Luma and the eldest of the Luma's, burst into the library with a letter.
"Rosalina! Rosalina!" He shouted in a panic as he flew over to Rosalina. "A letter *Pant! Pant!* has arrived for you!"
"A letter?" Rosalina asks. "Please, read it aloud." Lubba read the letter out for everyone to hear and by the time he was finished, Rosalina's decision was clear.
"Will you be attending, my queen?" Lubba asked.
"Of course I will." Rosalina answered. "Mario and his friends have told me all about these tournaments during their past few visits. It is one of the greatest honours anyone can receive."
"As you wish." Lubba bowed before going to the door. "I'll get your things."
"I wish to finish the annual story first." Rosalina said.
Rosalina continued the story. Sometimes it was happy, others it was sad but by the time Rosalina had gotten towards the end she was in tears.
As she watched the Lumas scurry about, the girl smiled and thought to herself, "This is my family now, and I will stay with them until they're ready to leave the nest. And when they do leave, I'll see them off with a smile. Because that's what makes a mother happiest."
"That night, when the girl lay down to sleep, a soft light enveloped her and reminded her of the blue planet she once called home. "But it would be nice to return home once every one hundred years to nap in my favorite sleeping nook."
The comet carrying the Lumas and the girl continues on its journey to this very day. With more "family members" in tow than can be counted, it's said that the comet visits the girl's home planet once every hundred years, its proud white tail glittering in the sky.
-The End-"
Rosalina didn't want to leave her family but she knew she would never get this opportunity again. She knew her family wanted her to do them proud and enter but she just couldn't bring herself to leave her family for three whole years. Three years is a very long time to go without the ones you love.
Amber wiped a tear from Rosalina's cheek. "You'll come with me, won't you Amber?" Rosalin. Asked her little yellow companion Who nodded enthusiastically in agreement. Cyan made a squeal of disappointment, not wanting to feel left out. "I can't take you with me, Cyan." Rosalina told her child. "You're too young to be fighting. I have to leave now." Rosalina and Amber stepped outside, Cyan and the other followed. Lubba was waiting outside, next to the subspace door, holding Rosalina's suitcase. The same one she used at the beginning of her adventure. Lubba hugged Rosalina and handed her the suitcase, Amber sitting on her shoulder.
"Good bye, my children." Rosalina announced, wiping away a tear. "I love you and I always will she turned to enter the door but turned back to see the Luma waving back at her. "I love you." She said one more time before entering the door, disappearing into thin air.
