The photos were sent to the OPA office first, but as Liv was coming in less and less as her due date became closer and closer she wouldn't have seen the manila envelope on her desk. However, Abby was on the ball and no piece of mail was left too long before making it way over to Olivia's apartment.
Almost everyday or every second day Abby was visiting her best friend to keep her on top of the going ons with the business. Abby was talking about numbers or something or other when Liv opened the envelope.
She hid her shock at the images in her hand. In all honesty that were quite innocent in terms of positions that she and Fitz could have been caught in. Just a quick peck on the lips. She knew exactly when and where the pictures were taken. They knew the likelihood that someone was watching with a camera. But seeing the evidence was a lot more confronting from a reality standpoint.
She strangely liked the pictures. There were very few pictures of her and Fitz like this. They look genuinely happy, without a care in the world, truly at peace. And in the moment when the pictures were taken, that was how they both felt. And aside from the long-distance lens used and the iffy angle, they were the splitting image of a Christmas Card portrait of a happy soon to be family.
"Liv?" Abby said when she realised that she was not being heard anymore. But Olivia's attention did not leave the photos. "What are you looking at?" Abby said moving over to the couch cushion next to Olivia. "Oh God," Abby near whispered as she took the pictures out of Olivia's hands, and then flipped through them, examining each one quickly. "Who sent these?"
"I don't know," Liv replied, she really didn't know how to feel at the moment. Obviously, someone was threatening them, but not knowing who or what they wanted made it feel oddly less serious. "There's no name."
"Are you going to tell the President?" Abby asked. From what she had been told there weren't any secrets between Olivia and him anymore, so she thought she already knew the answer.
"Not unless I have too," Liv said, taking the photos back. Although having them meant there had been an invasion of her privacy, letting Abby see them, felt more so.
"But Liv-" Abby began to protest but was soon cut off by her boss.
"I want you, Huck and Quinn, to find who sent these, and if possible bring them here. I want to speak with them," Liv instructed, Abby knew there was no point arguing. It seemed as if Olivia had already made up her mind. And there was no changing Olivia Pope's mind once she had set it.
"Okay," Abby said, as she began to leave. Abby reached out to take the photos, but Olivia held on to them tightly. So instead of fighting for them, Abby began to walk away instead.
"Oh, and Abby," Liv said and waited for her friend to turn back around. "When you come back, could you bring some Freedom Fries for me and the Guard Dog," Liv asked.
"Sure."
…
Within four hours Abby was back, she was manhandling a young reporter in one hand and holding two bags of Gettysburger in another. She banged on the apartment door, all she could do was wait until Olivia answered. And at this stage in Liv's pregnancy it was taking far longer for her to get to the door.
"Is this him?" Liv asked as she opened up.
"Yeah," Abby answered.
"Pat him down, make sure he's clean. No listening devices, nothing, okay?" Liv instructed the Secret Service Agent. Liv then took the two bags from Abby and examined the contents with in each.
"All clean," the agent said.
The reporter had that 'Oh God what have I gotten myself into' look on his face, as if he was in uncharted waters that were just that little too deep for him.
"Well then, let's talk," Liv smiled as she held open the door for the reporter. Abby was beginning to follow him in, when Liv blocked the door. "Just me and him," she said. Liv then passed the second bag to the agent before going inside herself. Abby heard the door lock behind them.
It was only ten minutes before the door opened up again. Both the reporter's face and Olivia's were unreadable. Did they come to an agreement? Did Liv get out some of her Big Dog magic? Or was the meeting over because there was no deal to come to?
Abby eagerly awaited answers when Olivia asked if she could drive the reporter back to wherever she found him.
…
Olivia had to tell Fitz something, but she didn't know how. It was too early in the afternoon to use the tunnels. Fitz would still have a tonne of work to do for the night, and that meant Olivia would have to hide away for hours. She could use the main gate and just walk in, which meant she was going to be in the tabloids again tomorrow, and she just wanted one day free of all that. She could call, but this was something best done in person. There was only one option.
She waved at the reporters as she walked through the main entrance. She told them to have a nice day and refused to comment on anything else. It was her usual routine. She had to stop letting her wants eclipse Fitz's needs. It was part of being in a relationship, you can't always get what you want. Sometimes compromise was needed. And really what were the papers going to say tomorrow, that they hadn't already said.
As she walked into the Oval, Fitz's face lit up at Olivia's unexpected arrival. Liv loved having walk in privileges, and she was currently one of the only people to have them. Fitz stood from behind his desk and made his way over to the sofa, and helped Liv sit down. "So, do you want the good news or the bad news first?"
"What's happened? Are you and the Baby alright?" He worried. Cyrus could come in right now and tell him they were at war with West Angola and Fitz still wouldn't be as worried as he was when Liv said she had bad news.
"We're fine, it's nothing like that," Liv responded rapidly, she should have known not to open with something like that. Fitz's list of priorities went her and the baby, and then everything else. She knew she had to explain quickly. She opened her handbag and took out the photos. "These were sent to me today," Liv said as she handed Fitz the envelope.
All she could do was watch as he took them out of the sleeve and looked at each individual snapshot. "Are these the good or the bad news?"
"Actually neither," she answered.
"What do you mean?"
"Okay well-"
Olivia waddled back to the sofa in the living room she had just been sitting on. She opened the bag of Gettysburger and took out the fries Abby had bought. She indulged herself on a few handfuls before even paying the reporter any attention.
"Ms Pope-" He began.
"What do you want? Its obviously money, right? Or do you want to be able to say you blackmailed the President. I'm sure that what you were thinking when you sent these to me. But let me just say, neither of those things are going to happen, or at least not how you were expecting. Whatever money I give you, will still me less than the mint the networks would offer. It means more to them, they are willing to pay for anything that fits their narrative. I, however, do know how much these pictures are worth now, compared to how much they could be worth with the real story attached.
You're young, you're a rookie, in a job that's thankless and quickly becoming obsolete. And I understand, you need a nest egg, something to full back on, and you could leak these pictures now and be set for the next few years. But your reputation will always be the sleezy paparazzi who waited outside the White House. Or there's another option. Would you like to hear it?"
This was the first pause Olivia had taken since she had started talking. The reporter hadn't gotten a word in edge wise, which from stories he's heard about Olivia Pope wasn't too uncommon. "Yes," he quietly replied.
"Wait a week. 22nd of January do whatever you want with the pictures. But it comes with a sit-down interview, possibly televised, depending if the President agrees of course. You get the real story, name recognition, the respect and opportunity that journalists that have been doing this for decades are striving for. Not to mention the biggest payout you can imagine. So, what's it going to be?"
"Can I think about it?"
"You could, but I would just like to remind you, blackmailing the President of the United States is a crime. And I, of course, would feel compelled to inform the agent outside of your intent. So, do you still want to think about it?"
"What does this mean? Fitz asked after Olivia explained what happened this afternoon. He wanted the truth to be out, but the baby was due in just less than a month, and he didn't want the added stress put on Liv at this late stage.
"It means that in one week, we will officially be in a romantic relationship in the eyes of the American people."
So what do ya'll think.
You excited for them to be public or should they have waited until the baby is born? How do you think Public perception will go for them? Will Mellie come back and ruin everything? Or will everything work out fine? Or will I just channel Shonda when I next write?
