Chapter 22
"WHAT! Seriously?!" Isaac exclaimed as he pushed himself off his bed.
"I'm not done. Let me explain." I said frantically.
"What more is there to explain? Hmm? Your soul mate!" He said as he kicked one of the benches causing the top to fly off. I jumped at the sudden burst of anger but wasn't surprised.
"He's not my soul mate. I said 'like' my soul mate. Let me explain." I pleaded as I grabbed his hand. "Sit. Please."
Isaac looked down at me with a very angry expression but complied. He sat beside me and pulled his hand away from mine. I knew he was going to react this way but it didn't mean it didn't hurt any less. I cleared my throat hoping to dislodge the knot that took up resident in my throat.
"Look, Shoshanna is a very powerful Sentinel ancestor of mine and she had a lover; he was a Healer. They were the first pair to become partnered. His name was Feodor and when she almost died he healed her and forged a pack with her. Which in turned caused the pairing of Healers to Sentinels." I looked at Isaac to see he was staring at his hands. I hoped he was listening. "I am sort of like her reincarnation. I am… was born me, Aria, but I have Shoshanna's power. Which means she is part of me, part of my spirit. I apparently have my own power but for some reason I was born with Shoshanna's power as well. That is why my eyes change color. When I hone both of our powers she somehow seems to come through."
Isaac looked up at me for the first time and his eyes are searching mine.
"So, how does that explain Orion?"
"Orion is in the same predicament as I am." Isaac's eyes glazed over as he processed the words. "The thing that makes this 'like' soul mates is we actually have the power of two soul mates. Which our powers are connected to us. They are part of our spirit. You see so Orion and I aren't really soul mates we just have the power of two soul mates. It's like if our magic is a puzzle and his magic has the connecting pieces to mine. It makes our bond just as strong but doesn't make us soul mates. I have my own powers which are connected to my spirit, as well." I placed my hands on Isaac's face willing him to look at me. When our eyes met I smiled to him. "I think…No." I shake my head and look into his eyes with my smile brighter. "I know you're my soul mate."
Isaac's eyes widened and he hastily pulled away from me.
"This is a lot to take in. Can we just talk tomorrow." Isaac got up from the bed and walked out not waiting for my answer.
"Great, Aria. Real smooth. Just lay it all on him at one time." I whispered to myself. I couldn't help but feel like my heart cracked into two. I pushed myself slowly off the bed and winced in pain. I grabbed my ankle as tears prickled down my cheeks.
"Hey, Isaac said you were in here." Scott said in a light tone.
"Yeah, I need to get home." I wiped the tears that were falling down my face. Scott rushed to my side in an instant.
"Rimi, what's wrong?" Scott wrapped his arm around my waist helping me walk.
"I'm an idiot. I think I just wrecked my relationship." I whispered through the tears.
"Long story, but I can tell you and Stiles over a gallon of ice cream."
Scott hugged me tightly.
"Sounds like fun." he smiled. "I can fill you in on me joining Derek's pack." He said the last part unhappily.
I looked up at him in surprise.
"What?! Why?" I asked as we limped toward the exit.
"Hey! Aria." Paige called from behind us. She was strolling toward us with a huge black bag on her shoulder and smiling like always. I hadn't expected her to be smiling at me after the previous talk we had.
"Hey." I replied with a small smile.
"Let me fix you up. Well, the best I can till tomorrow when Orion is fully recovered and able to heal you completely. Won't take me more than ten minutes." Paige said with a light inviting tone. Scott looked at me and nodded his head in agreement with Paige.
"Okay." I agreed because at this point this whole ankle was making me dependent on people and I didn't like it.
"Wow. That's a lot. How come you hadn't told us about this?" Stiles asked as he put a huge spoonful of cookie dough ice-cream.
"I just found out the day my dad got back. I just didn't want to say it aloud to anyone who wasn't there because then it made it real. I especially didn't want to tell Isaac because I love him." I said the last part and stuffed my mouth with banana split ice-cream.
Stiles coughed and looked at me with wide eyes.
"You love him?"
I nodded my head and pulled another spoon of ice-cream in my mouth.
"Of course she loves him. You'd have to be blind no to see it." Scott said as he poured fudge all over his strawberry ice-cream.
Stile shrugged his shoulders and dug right back into his tub of ice-cream.
"So, why'd you join Derek's pack?" I asked stabbing my spoon into the tub. I was upset that he decided to join Derek's pack when he already had us.
"I just need him not to kill, Jackson. Seems like the only way he won't." Scott didn't sound too happy about it either.
I smiled at Scott and placed a kiss on his cheek. He was always doing things for other people, even if it meant doing something he didn't want, too.
"You are awesome." I bumped our shoulders together and Scott laughed in return. He was smiling a wicked cute smile and couldn't help but think if it wasn't for Isaac having my heart; Scott would of had mine. Scott was my best friend but it didn't mean that I wouldn't of maybe fallen for him if our lives were different. If my mother wouldn't of died and I moved away.
Stiles and I walked into my Uncle Jack's office with food. I walked up to my him and placed a kiss on his cheek.
"I feel like I haven't see you all that much, even though we live in the same house." I said pouting my lips.
He laughed and pulled me into a hug and kissed my head.
"I know, sweetheart. Works just been a bit hectic. You know trying to catch a murderer." His words held sadness and a hint of exhaustion. I pulled away and smiled at him hoping to brighten his mood. He smiled back at he and patted my cheek lightly. "You are exactly like her. Always, making everyone around you happy with just one smile." Uncle Jack said with a sad smile.
"Her?" I asked curiously.
"Your mother." The words sounded sad.
I smiled brighter trying to hide the fact that that statement made my heart clench. I missed her like crazy.
"How come your never that happy to see me?" Stiles questioned.
Uncle Jack looked at Stiles and sighed.
"Because every time I see you are either in trouble, at a crime scene, asking about a crime scene, or all of the three."
I let out a snort of laughter and looked to Stiles who was looking slightly offended.
"Let's just eat." I pat Stiles on the back as we both take a seat in the chairs in front of Uncle Jack's desk.
I pulled out my raspberry almond salad and looked up to see Uncle Jack take a bite of his food to be extremely disappointed.
"Oh, what the hell is this?" He retorted in disgust.
I shook my head at his face with a small knowing smile. I didn't disagree to this but I told Stiles he wasn't going to be happy.
"Veggie burger." Stiles answered as he pulled out our drinks.
"Stiles, I asked for a hamburger." Uncle Jack pointed at his food with distain. Stiles looked back at him seemingly clueless.
"Well, veggie is healthier." Stiles answered him and looked toward me. I lifted up my salad and Stiles did the same.
"We're being healthy." We said in unison.
Uncle Jack looked down at his food and sighed. His disgruntled attitude only worsened when he opened up his container that held carrots and celery instead of french fries.
"Oh, hell, why are you trying to ruin my life?"
"Okay, I'm trying to extend you're life, okay?" Stiles countered.
"Uncle Jack, can you please for our sake just eat it, please. We love you and just want you to be around a bit longer." I said in my best pleading voice.
"Fine." He said as he looked down at his found in disdain.
"Okay, can you tell me what you've found." Stiles interjected and I rolled my eyes as I opened up my salad.
"No, I'm not sharing confidential police work with two teenagers." Uncle Jack responded.
I nod my head at my uncle in understanding but Stiles on the other hand kept on.
"Is that it on the board behind you?"
Uncle Jack hastily turned around to see the board behind him that clearly was all the clues they had to the murders.
"Don't look at that. Alright. Avert your eyes." He commanded but Stiles of course just kept looking around his father. I looked down at my salad as I picked at the raspberries I wanted and listened to the two bicker.
"HEY!"
"Just-its just-I see arrows pointing at pictures."
"Okay, okay stop."
"Fine. I found something. The mechanic and the couple who were murdered they all had something in common." I looked up at Uncle Jack in curiosity.
"All three?" I asked.
"Yeah, you know what I always say." He said looking between the two of us. "One's incident. Two's coincidence. Three's a pattern." Stiles and Uncle Jack said the last part together. I looked between the two in awe. Were we close to finding out who the Kanima's master?
"The mechanic, the husband, the wife-all the same age. All 24."
I looked to Stiles and then Uncle Jack.
"Mr. Lahey?" I questioned wondering how Isaac's father fit into all of this.
"Yeah, Isaac's dad isn't anywhere near 24." Stiles added as he looked at Uncle Jack curious.
"Which made me think that either, 'A,' Lahey's murder wasn't connected or 'B,' the ages were a coincidence, until I found this which would be 'C.'" He handed over a file to Stiles and I inched closer to see what was in the file that would cause a C scenario.
"Did you know that Isaac had an older brother named Camden?"
"He died in combat." I whispered the last part. Stiles looked at me and then at his father.
"But if he were alive today, guess what age he'd be today?" Uncle Jack asked the both of us.
"24." Stiles and I said in unison. Uncle Jack nodded his head and got up and motioned for Stiles and I to follow. We immediately placed our food down and got up and stood on either side of Uncle Jack. We started at he board in front of us.
"Now what if same age means same class - I mean, did you think of that?" Stiles asked his father. I looked at Stiles and nodded my head at him in approval.
"Yeah, yeah. Well I would've. I mean, I-look I just got Lahey's file two hours ago." He said a little defensively.
"Two hours ago?!" Stiles and I shouted. "Dad, people could be dying." Stiles added.
"Yeah, I'm aware of that. Thank you!"
"Same class." Stiles whispered to himself.
"Roasters! Oh, and Transcripts! We need Beacon Hills 2006 roaster! And their high school transcripts!" I added enthusiastically.
Uncle Jack nodded his head in approval and patted my cheek gently. He raced out of the office and then a few minutes later returned with a stack in his hands. He drops them on the desk and immediately we started fishing through the pile.
"Okay, this is it. Class of 2006. They all went to Beacon Hills." I said.
"Including Isaac's brother." Uncle Jack added.
"All right, but so what if they all knew each other, you know? I mean, two of them were married, so maybe they all just hung out." Stiles interjected.
"Well they could've had the same classes together." Uncle Jack said as he looked through the file.
"Or they could've-" I stopped mid sentence as I looked at the file in front of me.
"What?" They both asked.
"Same teacher." I responded and looked at both of them. "Harris."
"They were all in his class?" Stiles asked and I nodded as I placed the paper in front of the three of us.
"All four." I pointed to the paper. Uncle Jack nodded his head.
"And I don't know how Mr. Lahey fits in, but this - kids, this is definitely a pattern. All right, give me the 2006 yearbook. These names, we need faces." Uncle Jack suddenly grabs his phone dialing a number.
"Which ones?" Stiles asked as he opened the yearbook.
"Everyone in that Chemistry class. If the killer's not done killing-"
"One of them is next." Stiles and I finished Uncle Jacks thoughts.
"Yeah." He nodded his head at the two of us. "Yeah, Stilinski." He said into the phone as Stiles and I looked at each other. We had gotten closer to finding out who the Kanima's master was but it still left us with just as many questions.
My butts suddenly started vibrating.
"Hello." I answered.
"Hey, can you come by the clinic. I'm going to have a meeting with Derek. Deaton and I think you should be here." Scott informed me.
"Okay, on my way." I said as I hung up my phone.
I turned to Stiles and motioned for him to follow me away from Uncle Jack's ears.
"Hey, Scott just called he's having a meeting with Derek at the clinic. I'm going but can you stay here and see if you and Uncle Jack can get more info?" Stiles nodded his head and pulled me into a hug.
"Be careful. Jackson is out there and so is who ever controlling him." Stiles whispered in my ear. I hugged him back tightly.
"I will. See later at home." I pulled away and waved goodbye to my Uncle Jack who was on the phone.
"Where are you going?" He asked as put his hand over the phone.
"My dad called. Gonna go by the hospital." I lied with a smile trying to hide my guilt.
Uncle Jack smiled back at me happily.
"Great to see you guys are talking. Love you be careful. Be home before curfew." Uncle Jack said as he gave me a hug.
"I will. Love you too."
I walked out of the station feeling guilty for lying to him.
I was about to knock on the backdoor of the clinic when the door abruptly opened showing a smiling Scott.
"Werewolf superheating." I arched my eyebrow and shook my head.
"Can't help it." He answered with a smile and moved out of the way so I could walk inside. Deaton appeared from behind Scott and walked up to me with a smile.
"Aria, nice seeing you. Remember we still have training this week." He reminded me. I smiled back at him and nodded my head. How could I forget they were exhausting.
"So, what are we going to discuss with Derek?" I asked looking between the two.
"How we are going to save Jackson. I think I have a plan." Scott answered me. I smiled at them and clapped my hands together.
"I'm game. I will do whatever I can to help. You know I'll do anything to save Jackson."
"I know. That's why I needed you here. You always have my back." Scott pulled me into a side hug. He perked up and looked down at me.
"He's here." Scott pulled away and walked to the entrance. I turned to look at Deaton who was opening a cabinet filled with tiny jars.
"Deaton, is it possible that Derek could release me of my duties to the pack?" Deaton turned to look at me confused as he pulled out a try and placed it on the counter.
"I don't think that's possible. Aria, I can look into this but it seems unlikely. A Sentinel can only be connected to One pack. That's it. So, I think its petty unlikely." Deaton looked at me with same confused look. "Why do you ask? Did something happen?" Deaton asked but before I could answer we heard Scott's voice sound a bit angry.
"What is he doing here?" Scott asked as he sees Isaac walk into the clinic with Derek. I walk up to the front desk to see Isaac standing behind Derek looking cocky. I hated when he acted this way. This was the Isaac I loved. It was facade of the boy I really fell in love with.
"Yeah, well what is she doing here?" Derek asked pointing at me. I cross my arms over my chest and arch my eyebrows. Seriously.
"I trust her." Scott replied causing me to smile at him.
"Well, I trust him." Derek said eyeing me. My heart clenched at his words. I looked down because I knew it was a jab at me.
"Well, I don't trust him." Scott eyed Derek angrily because he knew he was trying to hurt me.
"Yeah, well, he doesn't trust you or her either." Isaac said referring to himself. My heart dropped to my stomach and I felt the knot lodge in my throat. I felt my eyes water and I clenched my fist digging my nails into my palms; trying to redirect my pain somewhere else. I dropped my gaze to the tiled floor willing myself not to cry. To focus on the pain in my fist.
"You know what? Derek doesn't really care. Now where is the vet? Is he going to help us or not?" Derek asked impatiently.
"That depends. Your friend, Jackson. Are we planning to kill him or save him." Deaton interjects toward Derek.
"Kill him."
"Save him." Derek and Scott say at the same time. When I hear Derek's answer I look up at him.
"Save him." I commanded and the anger at Derek and pain of Isaac's words caused my powers to suddenly ignite. The lights began to flicker and the chairs to rattle from the waiting room.
"Deep breaths. Think about your center. Remember. As long as your centered you can control it." I nodded my eyes and closed them. I took in a deep breath and let it out. Letting the only person who could center me. Isaac. Even though he was in front of me and clearly upset with me. I stilled pictured his arms around me, and his words of love whispering into my ear. Suddenly, everything stopped and I opened my eyes to be met by four pair of eyes. Looking at me cautiously.
"Good?" Deaton questioned. I nodded in repsonse.
"We are saving him." I commanded this time in more control.
Derek looked between Scott and I could clearly see there was no winning and sighed in defeat.
"Save him." Scott said to Deaton.
"Very well then. Follow me." Deaton commanded.
Scott and Derek follow immediately. I hesitated but decided to confront Isaac. I turned to look at Isaac.
"It's been two days since I heard from you." I looked up at Isaac to see him looking down at his feet. I waited a few seconds a realized I wasn't going to get an answer. I sighed and added. "Just wondering if you were okay, but seeing you here now seems to mean you are." Isaac nodded his head not once looking at me. Instead he just cockily sauntered passed me. I felt like a rejected fool and wanted so bad to cry but instead bit the inside of my lip drawing blood to focus on some other kind of pain. When I felt no tears threatening to spill. I let out a sad sigh and followed him into the back room.
Isaac stood beside Derek and Scott at the table. I opted to stand beside Deaton as he placed a tray filled with jars. Isaac immediately put his hand out to touch one of the jars when suddenly Derek snatched his wrist roughly.
"Watch what you touch." Derek reprimanded Isaac. Isaac rolled his eyes and leaned onto the table.
"So, what are you? Some kind of witch." Isaac said as he looked up at Deaton.
"No, I'm a veterinarian." I chuckled at Deaton's answer. I looked to see Isaac mouth 'Oh' and then look at me. I instantly looked down. I didn't want to catch his hate filled eyes. I already felt rejected didn't want to magnitude the feeling. "Unfortunately, I don't see anything here that's going to be an effective defense against a paralytic toxin." Deaton continued.
"We're open suggestions." Derek said as he looked at me. I couldn't help but feel so small under his stare, but I always tried to hide that tidbit. I just hoped I was still hold a good front.
"What about an effective offenses." Isaac added causing Derek and I took look away from each other.
"We already tried. I nearly took its head off. And Argent emptied an entire clip into it. The thing just gets back up." Derek said in a frustrated tone.
"Has it shown any weakness?" Deaton asked as he looked at all of us.
"Well one." Derek said and looked at me and the memory of the school swimming pool came into memory.
"It can't swim. I nearly drowned just to keep Derek and I away from it." I added as I looked toward Deaton but not before catching Isaac's eye. I knew he remembered that night just as clearly as I. It was the night he had saved me from drowning and told me he loved me for the first time.
"Does that go for Jackson as well?" Deaton's voice broke the memory that was playing my head.
"No. He's captain of the swim team." Scott informed Deaton. Just like the that a light bulb went off in my head. Of course.
"So, essentially we are trying to catch two people, right?" I asked Deaton. His reaction was to smile and nod his head in approval. He walked to a drawer and pulled out something,
"That is right Aria." He pulled out a coin and placed in front of Scott's face. "A puppet and a puppeteer." He placed the coin on the table.
"One killed the husband, but the other had to take care of the wife. Do we know why?" Deaton asked.
"I don't think Jackson could do it." Scott said looking at me.
"His mother died pregnant too, and she was maybe murdered." I added sadly. It still angered me that Erica told them what had happened to Jackson's parents.
"Leading me to think that he couldn't let the same thing happen to someone else." Scott added with twinge of sadness to his words.
"How do you know it's not part of the rules? If Jackson kills the wife then, the baby dies too." Isaac said as he looked like he was deep in thought.
"Does that mean your father was a murder?" Scott asked.
"Scott!" I practically yelled as I looked at him angrily. I shook my head in a disapproval. Isaac looked at me sadly and then turned to Scott.
"It wouldn't surprise me if he was." Isaac said with a distant tone to his voice. I wanted desperately to go to him and pull him into my arms but I couldn't he was angry with me. At this point I didn't even know if we were still together.
"Hold on. The book says their bonded right?" Deaton's voice sounds a little enthusiastic. Derek nodded his head at him. "What if the fear of the water isn't coming from Jackson but the person controlling him?" Deaton pulled out a jar of mountain ash and started to make a ring around the coin. "What if something that effects the Kanima also effects the master?" Deaton said as he closed the mountain ash ring around the coin. I smiled at Deaton and nodded my head.
"Meaning what?" Isaac asked confused.
"Meaning we can catch them. Both of them." I said with a smile on my face as I looked at all four males in the room.
I walked toward Stiles and Scott and heard them talking about the rave that Scott so desperately tried to get tickets to, but failed miserably.
"Its a secret show and theres only one way and its a secret." Stiles was saying as I watched Matt walk up to them at the same time as me. I couldn't help the shiver that raked my body every time he came near me.
"Hey. Either of you guys know why no one's getting suspended after what happened the other day at school?" Matt asked us. I looked down at my feet avoiding him and his question.
"Just forget about it. Nobody got hurt." Stiles' voice sounded annoyed.
"I - I had a concussion." Matt said in awe at Stiles words.
"Well, nobody got seriously hurt." I added as I rolled my eyes.
"I was in the E.R. for six hours." Matt looked astonished by words.
"Hey, do you want to know the truth, Matt? Your little bump on the head is about this high," Stiles bent down and placed his hand above the ground an inch. "on our list of problems right now." He practically yelled.
I grabbed Stiles arm and pulled him back.
"Come on, lets go." I said as I pulled him away.
"I just don't like him." Stiles said as we walked away. I looked at Stiles wide eyed. "Me either! He just gives me like a really bad vibe. Maybe he's the Kanima's master." I said as Stiles and I walked into school.
"I said the same thing but Scott doesn't think there is enough evidence." I nodded in agreement.
"Have you talked to Isaac?" Stiles questioned. I looked down at my feet.
"I tried. He didn't want to talk." I said as I looked up and saw him across the hall. "Probably hates me. I've got go." I said rapidly as I walked away leaving Stiles just standing there. I didn't mean to be rude but I just didn't want to talk about Isaac. I didn't want to talk about how we were probably broken up.
I rushed toward my locker hoping just to get what I needed and avoid Isaac as best I could. I wanted more than anything to make things better but I knew I couldn't. I just needed to give him space. I opened my backpack and pulled out my iPod. I placed the buds in my ear and immediately Pardon Me by Incubus began blaring blocking everyone out. I walked a bit calmer toward my locker and began pulling out my books. I closed the locker and turned only to find Isaac standing in front me. I gasped in surprise at seeing him standing in front of me. I looked up at him and he was just staring down at me with a conflicted look in his eyes. I knew right there what he was going to do. I felt the tears well up in my eyes.
"Don't say it. Your eyes say it all." I said as I rushed to move beside him. As, I rushed passed him he grabbed my wrist turning me around and crashing his lips onto mine. I immediately responded to his kiss. I kissed him with everything I had and tried my best to pour all the love I had for him into that kiss. I felt my face suddenly become wet. I pulled away to see a tear falling down his face. He was crying. This kiss wasn't to make things better. This didn't mean he had changed his mind. This was a goodbye. I backed away and rushed off the other direction.
Once, I was outside the school and the cool air hit my face I let the cry of heartache leave me. I continued down the steps and as the my emotions became a frenzy so did the weather outside. The crash of thunder and lightening sounded and lit up the sky around me. I had to get as far away from Isaac as I could. I needed too. I ran as fast as I could.
"ARIA!" I heard my voice called out from behind me but didn't care who it was. I made my way into the woods and heard footsteps following behind me. I turned only to crash into a hard chest. I looked up only to be in the face of Orion. I lost it! I shoved him and hit him repeatedly. Orion just stood there taking the beating until I was tired and the cries began to hurt my head. He pulled me into his arms.
"Shhh…it's okay. I'm here." Orion said in a soothing tone but it wasn't soothing me; it was making me angry.
"No, it's not okay. Isaac doesn't want to be with me because of you." I yelled out. "It's seems like you and him don't understand that I have my own feelings. This bond doesn't define me. I love Isaac. Orion, you are special to me but I don't love you the way I love Isaac. Isaac makes me whole." I said as I pushed myself away from Orion.
I screamed up at the sky in anger, pain, and heartbreak; and before I could register what was happening lightening descended from the sky and connected with my hands. I feel a surge of power course through my body. I turned to look at Orion who is in turn looking at me in awe. I screamed out my emotions causing the thunder to crash around us. I collapsed to the floor as all the emotions I was feeling left me. Literally, left me. I felt hollow.
"Aria, your eyes." Orion's words sounded panicked
